Feats are choices with timing, prerequisites, and campaign context. This hub points to the guide that answers the actual question at the table: which category applies, what sourcebook option fits the campaign, and what a specific class can use well.
The five approved books behind this guide are the 2024 Player's Handbook, Arcana Unleashed, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun, and Ravenloft: The Horror Within. Each detailed guide labels expansion material so a default 2024 game does not accidentally inherit a setting-specific rule.

Start With the Feat Category
The 2024 Player's Handbook organizes its feats into four categories. Category is not flavor text: it tells you how a character can qualify.
| Guide | Source coverage | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Origin Feats | Player's Handbook and approved expansion Origin options | Matching a level 1 background choice to the character you want to play |
| General Feats | Player's Handbook, Arcana Unleashed, and Heroes of Faerun | Comparing later feat choices, including level prerequisites and ability score increases |
| Fighting Style Feats | Player's Handbook and Arcana Unleashed | Choosing a style when you have the Fighting Style feature |
| Epic Boons | Player's Handbook and approved expansion boons | Planning a level 19 choice or another qualifying feat |
Your background supplies an Origin Feat. A class's Ability Score Improvement feature gives the Ability Score Improvement feat or another feat you qualify for; the levels vary by class. At level 19, the class entries offer an Epic Boon feat or another qualifying feat. Read the individual feat's prerequisite before treating a recommendation as available.
Campaign-Specific Feat Paths
The approved expansion books add options with an explicit setting gate. They belong in a campaign that uses that book, with the table's permission where the rules call for it.
| Guide | Source coverage | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Dragonmark Feats | Eberron: Forge of the Artificer | Eberron campaign characters, dragonmarked backgrounds, Greater Mark upgrades, and Boon of Siberys routing |
| Dark Gift Feats | Ravenloft: The Horror Within | Ravenloft characters deciding whether a supernatural benefit is worth its drawback |
Eberron: Forge of the Artificer presents Dragonmark feats, associated General feats, and an Epic Boon. Dragonmarked-heir backgrounds grant a Dragonmark feat instead of an Origin Feat, while another character can choose a Dragonmark feat only when an unrestricted choice and its prerequisites allow it.
Ravenloft: The Horror Within presents Survivor and Sharp Eye as Origin Feats plus Dark Gift feats. Its backgrounds provide specific routes into those choices: Mist Wanderer and Spirit Medium grant a Dark Gift feat, while Haunted One and Investigator offer a listed Origin Feat or a Dark Gift feat.
The D&D 2024 Backgrounds guide is the companion route for choosing a background before you lock in that level 1 feat.

Start BuildingExpansion Feats Without Guesswork
The approved expansion books do not replace the core categories. They add options inside them.
- Arcana Unleashed adds Origin, General, Fighting Style, and Epic Boon feats. Its spell-school, familiar, and portal options belong in the category guide rather than a separate rules system.
- Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun adds Origin, General, and Epic Boon feats. Its faction and Spellfire options should be read alongside the relevant background and campaign material.
- Eberron: Forge of the Artificer adds its Dragonmark path, General feat upgrades, and a related Epic Boon.
- Ravenloft: The Horror Within adds its Origin and Dark Gift paths, where the drawback is part of the decision rather than an afterthought.
Hot take: A feat is not automatically a better choice than an ability score increase. A recommendation is useful only after it clears three checks: your character qualifies, it supports the actions you actually take, and it belongs in the campaign your group is playing.

A Practical Feat Check
Before selecting a feat, work through this short sequence.
- Name the feature that grants the choice: a Background, Ability Score Improvement, Fighting Style, or a campaign-specific background.
- Confirm the feat category and every prerequisite in the current source text.
- Compare the feat with the Ability Score Improvement feat when that is the alternative.
- If it is an Eberron, Forgotten Realms, or Ravenloft option, confirm that the campaign is using that book and its setting assumptions.
- Open the class guide only after the first four answers are clear.
