The short answer

D&D 2024 Dark Gift feats are Ravenloft campaign options that exchange an Origin Feat for a supernatural benefit with a matching drawback. Ravenloft: The Horror Within presents nine Dark Gift feats plus the Survivor and Sharp Eye Origin feats.

Introduction

Nine Dark Gift feats and two Origin feats make up the Ravenloft-specific feat content from Ravenloft: The Horror Within, and none of it is locked to a single class or background. A Dark Gift represents a bargain, willing or otherwise, with the Dark Powers or some other force that thrives in the Domains of Dread. In game terms, it's a feat category that trades Origin Feat access for a real drawback alongside a real benefit, most often a bad outcome that can trigger whenever you roll a natural 1 on a D20 Test.

This guide covers all 11 feats: the 2 safe Origin feats (Survivor, Sharp Eye) and the 9 Dark Gift feats, each with its full benefit and its full cost. Four Ravenloft backgrounds connect directly to this category - two grant a Dark Gift automatically, two let you choose one instead of their listed Origin Feat.

D&D 2024 Dark Gift Feats guide

How Dark Gift Feats Work

Read this once and the individual write-ups below only need to cover what's different about each one.

Prerequisite. Every Dark Gift feat requires a Ravenloft campaign. The prerequisite keeps these bargains tied to a horror campaign rather than treating them as ordinary character-build options.

Getting one. With your DM's permission, take a Dark Gift feat any time you'd normally gain an Origin Feat. A DM can also hand you one mid-campaign as a bargain struck with a Darklord or some other dark power, independent of your background.

The drawback. This is what separates a Dark Gift from every other feat category in the game: each one pairs a benefit with a matching cost. Five of the nine drawbacks (Aberrant Anatomy, Echoing Soul, Gathered Whispers, Living Shadow, and Symbiotic Being) trigger whenever you roll a natural 1 on any D20 Test (an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw), forcing a Constitution, Wisdom, or Charisma save against DC 13 plus your Proficiency Bonus, with a condition on a failure. The other four use a different trigger: Second Skin's change catalyst, Mist Walker's drain on places you rest, and the standing penalties of Touch of Death and Watchers. Read the drawback with the same weight as the benefit before you pick one.

Spellcasting benefit. Several Dark Gift feats grant a spell you always have prepared, castable once free per Long Rest and afterward using your own spell slots if you have any of the right level. You choose Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as the spellcasting ability for these spells when you take the feat, independent of your class's own casting stat.

Rating Legend

RatingMeaning
●Best in category: strong benefit with a manageable or rare drawback.
●Solid: a good fit when the flavor and drawback suit the character.
●Situational: a narrow niche or an expensive drawback.

The 2 Origin Feats

FeatBenefitDrawback
Survivor ●Reroll bad Initiative; Reaction bonus to Charmed/Frightened savesNone
Sharp Eye ●Advantage on ability checks during Search or StudyNone

Survivor

● Best

Hypervigilance lets you reroll Initiative any time you roll 9 or lower, keeping the new result. Steel Yourself is a Reaction on a failed save against Charmed or Frightened: add your Proficiency Bonus to the roll, potentially turning the failure into a success, usable once per Long Rest.

No drawback, no Ravenloft-specific prerequisite beyond the background it's typically attached to, and both benefits are broadly useful outside horror campaigns too. This is the safe pick for a Haunted One who doesn't want to gamble on a Dark Gift.

Sharp Eye

● Best

When you take the Search or Study action, give yourself Advantage on any ability check made as part of it, a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, refreshing on a Long Rest.

Simple, strong, and directly useful for the investigation-heavy play a Ravenloft campaign tends to reward. No downside at all.

Touch of Death ●Chill Touch without components, Necrotic damage ignores ResistanceDisadvantage on Death Saving Throws (standing)
Watchers ●Free Beast Sense and Speak with Animals, Search bonusDisadvantage on saves against Scrying (standing)

Aberrant Anatomy

● Situational

Exposure to something like Far Realm horror has warped your body. Breathless lets you hold your breath for a full hour. Extrasensory Perception grants Perception proficiency if you lack it, Expertise in Perception, and Blindsight out to 15 feet. Warping Flesh is the cost: whenever you roll a natural 1, make a DC 13 plus Proficiency Bonus Constitution save or take the Stunned condition until the end of your next turn.

Blindsight is a strong sensory upgrade, especially for a martial character who wants to fight blind or through darkness. Stunned is one of the worst conditions to eat randomly, though, since it costs you your action, Reaction, and movement on a bad roll you don't control. That randomness is what keeps this Orange instead of Green.

Echoing Soul

● Good

You carry echoes of a past or alternate life. Channeled Prowess grants proficiency in two skills of your choice, plus Expertise in one skill you're proficient in, which you can change after each Long Rest. Inherent Tongues adds one additional language. Intrusive Echoes is the drawback: on a natural 1, DC 13+PB Constitution save or the Incapacitated condition (and half Speed while it lasts) until the end of your next turn.

Two free skill proficiencies is solid, flexible value on its own, and Incapacitated is bad but shorter and less action-denying overall than some of this category's other drawbacks since it clears at the end of your next turn rather than persisting into it.

Gathered Whispers

● Best

Whispering spirits haunt you, for better and worse. Spirit Whispers teaches you Message (castable without Material components) and gives you Augury always prepared, castable once per Long Rest without a spell slot or components. Unearthly Scream is a Reaction when you're hit by an attack: add your Proficiency Bonus to your AC against that attack, potentially turning a hit into a miss, usable a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest. Voices from Beyond is the drawback: on a natural 1, DC 13+PB Wisdom save or Deafened until the end of your next turn (Disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls while it lasts).

A free daily Augury gives most classes divination access they otherwise lack, and the repeatable Reaction can turn a hit into a miss. Deafened is a comparatively mild drawback next to Stunned or a forced-action table, which is most of why this rates as this category's strongest pick.

Hot Take: Gathered Whispers has the friendliest risk-reward profile for many parties. Its drawback can still spoil an important turn, but it is more predictable to play around than a Stunned result or Living Shadow's loss of control.

Build Your D&D 2024 Character

The D&D 2024 character builder is live - build a Beastkin, a Kobold, or whatever your table is missing, free, right now.

Start Building

Living Shadow

● Situational

Your shadow has a will of its own. Grasping Shadow grants a free Mage Hand you can cast without components. Lengthened Strike extends your melee reach by 10 feet on an attack, usable a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest. Ominous Will is the drawback: on a natural 1, DC 13+PB Wisdom save or Incapacitated until the start of your next turn, at which point you roll on the Shadow's Will table (1d8: a forced move, a forced melee attack against a random target, or the Prone condition, depending on the roll).

The reach extension is a solid tactical tool for a martial build that wants to threaten from further back, but the drawback is the harshest one in this category: failing the save doesn't just cost you a condition, it can force an attack against an ally or a random forced move you don't choose. That randomness pushes this to Orange even with a useful benefit attached.

Mist Walker

● Good

You slip through the Mists, and the Mists want something back. Domain Traveler treats you as carrying a Mist talisman keyed to any domain you can name, even one you've never visited, when entering the Mists (though it can't bypass a Darklord's closed borders). Mist Walk is a Reaction on taking damage or failing a save against Grappled or Restrained: teleport up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space you can see, usable a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest. Poisoned Roots is the cost: when you finish a Long Rest, the area within 10 miles of you starts draining you, and any Short Rest you finish there requires a DC 13+PB Constitution save or grants no benefit.

A repeatable damage-triggered teleport gives you mobility and an escape tool, and the drawback never touches a combat roll. It does punish a party that camps in one region for days, and Short Rests are when many classes recover their resources. That keeps it Green rather than Blue. It's the book's recommended Dark Gift for the Mist Wanderer background.

Second Skin

● Good

There is another side of you most people never see: a beast, an avenger, or a walking nightmare. Alternate Form gives you Alter Self always prepared, castable once per Long Rest without a spell slot or components, and when you cast it this way it doesn't require Concentration; you can also cast it with your own spell slots. You choose Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as its spellcasting ability. Involuntary Change is the cost: when you take the feat, roll on the Change Catalyst table (a moon phase, a certain flower's scent, temple bells, a particular melody, touching pure silver, or seeing someone who resembles a specific person). After you experience that catalyst, at the start of your next turn make a DC 13+PB Charisma save. On a failure you immediately cast Alter Self through Alternate Form, and if you've already spent that use, you're Stunned until the start of your next turn instead.

A Concentration-free Alter Self is excellent infiltration and utility for any class. The drawback is predictable once you know your catalyst, so the DM decides how often it comes up; at worst it spends your free casting or costs a turn to Stunned.

Symbiotic Being

● Situational

A second entity shares your body. Entwined Existence links your life to the symbiote's (it can't be targeted separately, and you rise or fall together). Second Mind grants proficiency in one of ten listed skills plus an additional language. Sustained Symbiosis is a Reaction on a failed save: expend a Hit Point Die and add the roll, potentially turning failure into success, usable a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest. Symbiotic Agenda is the cost: on a natural 1, make a DC 13+PB Charisma save or be Charmed for 1d12 hours, compelled to follow the symbiote's goals as the DM determines. You can repeat the save whenever you take damage, and the DM may call for it when you act against the symbiote's agenda.

The save-rescue Reaction is strong utility, but the Charmed duration on a failed save is long enough to derail a session if it lands at a bad moment. Best reserved for a character whose concept already embraces the "something else lives in me" premise.

Touch of Death

● Good

Deathly power sits close to the surface. Death Touch teaches you Chill Touch, castable without components, and Necrotic damage you deal with it ignores Resistance; you pick Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as its spellcasting ability. Pull of the Grave is the cost: you have Disadvantage on Death Saving Throws.

A cantrip that punches through Necrotic Resistance is solid value for a damage-focused build, especially one without a strong attack cantrip of its own. The drawback never triggers on a bad roll, but it matters most exactly when things are going wrong, so front-line characters should think twice.

Watchers

● Good

Something unnatural always watches you. Borrowed Eyes gives you Beast Sense and Speak with Animals always prepared, each castable free once per Long Rest. Heightened Suspicion adds 1d4 to any ability check made as part of the Search action. The cost is a standing penalty rather than a natural-1 trigger: Incessant Watchers gives you Disadvantage on saving throws against the Scrying spell.

No random bad-roll spiral here, just one narrow, predictable penalty that matters only when someone targets you with Scrying. That predictability, plus a useful scouting kit in Beast Sense and the Search bonus, makes this one of the lowest-risk picks in the category.

Choosing a Dark Gift

Two backgrounds hand you one automatically (Mist Wanderer, Spirit Medium), and two more let you pick one instead of a named Origin Feat (Haunted One, Investigator). Outside those, the "Ravenloft campaign" prerequisite is the only gate, and your DM's willingness to offer the swap.

Weigh the drawback like it's part of the cost, not fine print. Four feats carry no natural-1 risk: Mist Walker, Second Skin, Touch of Death, and Watchers, each with a predictable cost you can plan around. Gathered Whispers pairs a strong benefit with a mild natural-1 cost. Living Shadow and Symbiotic Being ask more of a player willing to accept real randomness or a standing burden in exchange for their upside, which fits a character built around that risk as much as it fits raw optimization.

If your table treats these as flavor first and mechanics second, don't skip the drawback anyway. A Dark Gift that never bites is just a slightly better Origin Feat with extra steps, and part of what makes this category work at the table is the tension of a bargain that can turn on you.

Bottom Line

Eleven feats, one shared idea: a bargain, whether struck willingly or forced by circumstance. Survivor and Sharp Eye are the safe Origin picks with no cost attached. Of the 9 Dark Gift feats, Gathered Whispers, Mist Walker, Second Skin, Touch of Death, and Watchers offer the strongest benefit-to-risk ratio; Aberrant Anatomy, Living Shadow, and Symbiotic Being ask you to accept real randomness or a standing burden for their upside. Confirm your table is running a Ravenloft campaign, get your DM's sign-off on the Origin Feat swap, and read every drawback as closely as the benefit before you commit.
