General Feats require level 4 or higher. You can choose one when a class feature grants an Ability Score Improvement, provided you meet its other prerequisites. The best choice supports a turn your character already wants to take or a problem the party repeatedly faces.
The 2024 Player's Handbook separates character-creation Origin Feats from level-4-and-higher General Feats. That division makes a General Feat a later build decision: use it to improve a tactic your character already repeats or to solve a party problem that actually appears at the table.
This guide covers the Player's Handbook list plus approved General Feats from Arcana Unleashed, Eberron - Forge of the Artificer, and Heroes of Faerun. Setting-gated options remain in their own sections so a core-only table can use the Player's Handbook list first.
How General Feats Work in D&D 2024
Origin Feats, selected at character creation through a Background, handle baseline utility such as Lucky and Alert. General Feats are level-4-and-higher picks with their own prerequisites and more build-specific benefits.
Alert, Lucky, Magic Initiate, Tavern Brawler, and Tough are Origin Feats in the 2024 Player's Handbook. They are not entries in the General category. See the Origin Feats guide for those options.
Great Weapon Master and Sharpshooter now add Proficiency Bonus damage after qualifying hits as part of the Attack action. Read their exact trigger before assuming either benefit applies to every weapon attack.

Every General Feat: Rated
The ratings below use a four-tier system:
- ● Blue — Best in class. Take this whenever you qualify.
- ● Green — Solid. Worth taking if it fits your build.
- ● Orange — Situational. Only good in specific builds or campaigns.
- ● Red — Skip. There's almost always a better option.
Alert, Lucky, Magic Initiate, Tavern Brawler, and Tough are Origin Feats only in the 2024 PHB. There is no separate General-tier version of any of them. See the Origin Feats guide for those five. The table below covers only feats that actually exist in the General category.

Start BuildingArcana Unleashed General Feats
Arcana Unleashed adds fifteen General Feats. They are sourcebook options, so start with the prerequisite and the kind of turn you want to improve rather than assuming they displace the Player's Handbook recommendations.
School Adept Feats
Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy, and Transmutation each have an Adept feat. Every one requires level 4 and Spellcasting or Pact Magic, increases a mental ability score, expands the chosen school, and rewards casting from that school. Choose the school your character already casts most often.
| Feat | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Abjuration Adept | A protective caster who wants shielding and ally defense to matter more. |
| Conjuration Adept | A Concentration-dependent summoner or battlefield-mobility caster. |
| Divination Adept | A caster who wants limited control over a decisive d20 test. |
| Enchantment Adept | A social or control caster who needs discreet Enchantment magic. |
| Evocation Adept | A blaster willing to spend Hit Dice for a stronger damage roll. |
| Illusion Adept | A character whose plan depends on illusions holding up to scrutiny. |
| Necromancy Adept | A necromancy caster who can trade Hit Dice for personal recovery. |
| Transmutation Adept | A transmuter who benefits from extra movement after casting. |
Familiar, Magic Initiate, and Spell Options
| Feat | Prerequisite | Choose it when... |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental Familiar | Familiar Friend | Your familiar needs an elemental defense and an occasional close-range disruption tool. |
| Magic Connoisseur | Magic Initiate | You want to deepen the spell list you already chose with Magic Initiate. |
| Otherworldly Familiar | Familiar Friend | A familiar's movement through obstacles and flexible resistance matter more than damage. |
| Soothing Familiar | Familiar Friend | Your party often restores hit points near a familiar and can use more reliable healing dice. |
| Spell Resistant | Level 4 | Resistance and limited saving-throw help solve a recurring magical threat. |
| Spell Subterfuge | Level 4, Spellcasting or Pact Magic | Your plan depends on casting, repositioning, and staying hidden. |
| Warlike Familiar | Familiar Friend | You want a familiar that can protect an adjacent ally and can support the added spell. |
The four familiar upgrades assume the group is comfortable giving a companion a meaningful part of the turn. For the level-1 familiar option they build on, see the Origin Feats guide. For the sourcebook's campaign context, see the Arcana Unleashed overview.
Eberron and Forgotten Realms General Feats
Eberron - Forge of the Artificer includes thirteen Greater Mark feats and Potent Dragonmark. Each Greater Mark requires its matching Dragonmark feat, while Potent Dragonmark requires any Dragonmark feat. Their complete rules and access requirements belong in the Dragonmark Feats guide, rather than being duplicated here.
Heroes of Faerun adds thirteen setting-facing General Feats. Several require an associated Origin Feat. The remaining options are available at level 4 or higher without a faction prerequisite.

High-Impact General Feats
Great Weapon Master
Great Weapon Master increases Strength by 1. When you hit with a Heavy weapon as part of the Attack action, it adds your Proficiency Bonus to that hit's damage. A melee critical hit or reducing a creature to 0 Hit Points also opens a Bonus Action attack with the same weapon.
Hot Take: Great Weapon Master is strongest for a character who makes several Heavy-weapon attacks and can use its Bonus Action follow-up. It is a reliable damage feat, not a universal martial default.
Sharpshooter
Sharpshooter increases Dexterity by 1 and adds Proficiency Bonus damage after a ranged-weapon hit in the Attack action. Its cover and long-range benefits make it especially useful when the campaign regularly uses distant firing lanes or partial cover.
Polearm Master
Polearm Master increases Strength or Dexterity by 1. It supplies a Bonus Action butt-end attack after a qualifying Attack action and a Reaction attack when a creature enters your reach. It earns its rating when the character can use a quarterstaff, spear, or a Heavy, Reach weapon without competing too often for that Bonus Action.
Sentinel
Sentinel increases Strength or Dexterity by 1. It lets you make an Opportunity Attack after a creature within 5 feet Disengages or attacks another target, and an Opportunity Attack hit reduces that creature's Speed to 0 for the turn. It is a positional-control pick for a frontliner who expects to stay near allies and enemies.
War Caster
War Caster increases a mental ability score by 1, gives advantage on Constitution saves to maintain Concentration, and allows Somatic components while your hands are occupied. Its Reactive Spell benefit can replace an Opportunity Attack against a creature leaving your reach with an eligible single-target spell.
The stat bump makes this easier to justify over Resilient (CON) as a first Concentration defensive feat, though both are good enough that many caster builds want both eventually.
Resilient
Choose an ability score in which you lack saving throw proficiency, increase it by 1, and gain that proficiency. Resilient (Constitution) is a reliable way to protect Concentration on classes that do not already have Constitution save proficiency.
Top 10 General Feats
Lucky and Alert would top most feat power-rankings, but they're Origin Feats in 2024, not General Feats. See the Origin Feats guide for those. This list covers only feats actually available at level 4+.
1. Fey Touched
What it does: +1 to INT, WIS, or CHA. Always have Misty Step and one chosen 1st-level Divination or Enchantment spell prepared. Cast each once per Long Rest without a spell slot, or use an appropriate spell slot.
Who takes it: Primarily casters and half-casters who want mobility and extra spells. Also excellent on martials as a secondary resource.
Why it's top 10: Misty Step gives many builds a dependable Bonus Action teleport for escaping a grapple or repositioning. The chosen Divination or Enchantment spell gives the feat a second job, such as information, defense, or control.
Synergies: It works best for a character whose main ability score is Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma and who benefits from short-range repositioning.
2. Sentinel
What it does: +1 STR or DEX. When you hit a creature with an opportunity attack, its speed drops to 0 for the rest of the turn. Creatures within 5 ft of you provoke OAs from you even when taking the Disengage action. When a creature within 5 ft attacks an ally (not you), you can use your reaction to make an attack against that creature.
Who takes it: Melee frontliners (Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, Barbarian) who want to control space.
Why it's top 10: Sentinel turns you into a zone of control. Creatures stop moving once you hit them. They can't Disengage past you. And you can protect adjacent allies. The battlefield control this provides is often worth more than raw damage.
Synergies: Polearm Master. The combo is so good it gets its own section below.
3. War Caster
What it does: +1 to your spellcasting ability score, advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain Concentration, and the ability to cast an eligible one-action, single-target spell as a Reaction when a creature leaves your reach. You can also perform Somatic components while holding weapons or a Shield.
Who takes it: Any caster who relies on Concentration spells: Wizard, Sorcerer, Druid, Cleric, Warlock, Bard.
Why it's top 10: Concentration is how high-level spellcasting works. Every powerful spell (Hypnotic Pattern, Hold Monster, Wall of Force, Banishment, Polymorph) requires you to maintain Concentration. Getting hit drops it. Advantage on those saves keeps your best spells alive.
Synergies: Resilient (CON) is the complementary pick. Take both and you're nearly impossible to debuff off Concentration.
4. Resilient (Constitution)
What it does: +1 CON. Proficiency in Constitution saving throws.
Who takes it: Casters who need Concentration saves and don't have native CON proficiency. Occasionally other classes for the general defensive value.
Why it's top 10: CON saves come up constantly: Concentration checks, various legendary actions, Constitution-targeting spells. Proficiency turns those saves from "cross your fingers" to "probably fine."
Synergies: War Caster. Together you have advantage + proficiency on Concentration saves, which is as good as it gets.
5. Shadow Touched
What it does: +1 to INT, WIS, or CHA. Always have Invisibility and one chosen 1st-level Illusion or Necromancy spell prepared. Cast each once per Long Rest without a spell slot, or use an appropriate spell slot.
Who takes it: Casters and martial builds that want Invisibility access. Rogues who don't already have it. Warlocks who want Hex bolted onto the feat.
Why it's top 10: Invisibility is one of the best action-economy spells in the game. Free access every long rest, no slot required. The Illusion/Necromancy add-on is the icing: pick up Hex, Inflict Wounds, Cause Fear, Disguise Self, or Silent Image depending on your character concept.
Synergies: Warlock, Rogue, and melee Paladins get the most mileage out of the repeated Invisibility access.
6. Polearm Master
What it does: +1 STR or DEX. When you take the Attack action with a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can make one bonus action attack with the butt end of the weapon (1d4 bludgeoning). Creatures that enter your reach provoke an opportunity attack from you.
Who takes it: Strength-based melee martials (Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian) who want extra attacks and threatened area.
Why it's top 10: The bonus action attack is significant action economy, adding an extra hit every round. The opportunity attack on entry means enemies can't safely close on you, which combines with Sentinel to lock creatures in place before they even get to take their turn.
Synergies: Sentinel (covered in combos below), Great Weapon Master for bonus action flexibility.
7. Great Weapon Master (2024)
What it does: +1 STR. When you hit a creature with a Heavy weapon, add your Proficiency Bonus to the damage roll. When you reduce a creature to 0 HP or score a crit with a melee weapon, you can make one bonus action melee weapon attack.
Who takes it: Two-handed melee martials: Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin.
Why it's top 10: A flat Proficiency Bonus damage bonus on every Heavy-weapon hit is a consistent upgrade. The bonus attack after a melee critical hit or reducing a creature to 0 Hit Points adds value in fights with multiple enemies.
Synergies: Barbarian's Reckless Attack gives advantage, which increases crit frequency for more bonus action attacks. Fighter's Action Surge turns into a damage avalanche.
8. Heavy Armor Master
What it does: +1 STR or CON. While wearing Heavy Armor, reduce Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage from an attack by your Proficiency Bonus.
Who takes it: Fighters, Paladins, and Clerics in Heavy Armor, specifically those who expect to get hit a lot (melee frontliners).
Why it's top 10: The damage reduction scales with Proficiency Bonus, so it improves at each tier milestone. It is most valuable for a Heavy Armor character who expects to absorb several weapon attacks in a fight.
Synergies: Paladin's Aura of Protection, Fighter's Second Wind. Any build that wants to plant itself in the enemy's face and stay there.
9. Sharpshooter
What it does: +1 DEX. When you hit a creature with a ranged weapon attack, add your Proficiency Bonus to the damage roll. Ignore half and three-quarters cover, and no disadvantage on attacks at long range.
Who takes it: DEX-based ranged martials: Rangers, Fighters, Rogues who use bows or crossbows as their main damage source.
Why it's top 10: It's the ranged mirror of Great Weapon Master, and ranged attackers benefit even more from the ignore-cover clause than melee builds benefit from GWM's cleave. A flat PB damage bonus on every hit adds up fast, and never eating a penalty at long range keeps you effective at any engagement distance.
Synergies: Crossbow Expert removes the loading restriction and melee disadvantage that would otherwise limit a Sharpshooter build's positioning.
10. Inspiring Leader
What it does: +1 WIS or CHA. Whenever you finish a Short or Long Rest, up to six creatures within 30 feet (including you) gain temporary hit points equal to your character level plus your CHA or WIS modifier.
Who takes it: Any party with a front line that can use extra HP before a fight. Paladins, Bards, and Clerics get the most mileage since they already run high CHA or WIS.
Why it's top 10: Temporary HP for the whole party is efficient, repeatable damage mitigation with no action cost beyond the rest you were already taking. It scales with character level and stacks with any other defensive plan the party already has.
Synergies: Best paired with a Short Rest-heavy campaign, since the party can refresh the buff between fights more often.
Worst General Feats: Traps to Avoid
Weapon Master
Weapon Master increases Strength or Dexterity by 1 and grants the mastery property of one eligible weapon you are proficient with; you can change that weapon after a Long Rest. It is narrow, but it can be worthwhile when that one mastery property completes a weapon plan.
Lightly Armored
Lightly Armored grants Light Armor and Shield Training. It is a focused defensive pick for a character who lacks both, but it is not an automatic choice over an Ability Score Improvement or a feat that advances the character's main role.
Elemental Adept
Elemental Adept is available at level 4 to a character with Spellcasting or Pact Magic. It is a focused pick for a caster who repeatedly deals one eligible damage type into resistance; the benefit is less valuable for a spell list that changes damage types frequently.
Charger
Charger adds damage or a push to one melee attack after a 10-foot straight approach in the Attack action. It is a situational pick because it needs open ground and a target worth charging, so compare it with the weapon and role benefits of Polearm Master or Great Weapon Master before committing.
Martial Weapon Training
You get proficiency with all Martial weapons. There is almost no character in the game who needs this at level 4 and can't get martial weapon proficiency through a better route. It's a ribbon feat masquerading as a General Feat.
Hot Take: Weapon Master and Lightly Armored are narrow training picks. Take them only when the exact training benefit unlocks a build you cannot reach through your class or another feat.
Feat Combos Worth Planning Around
Polearm Master + Sentinel
Polearm Master plus Sentinel can stop a creature at reach when the opportunity attack hits:
- A creature moves within 10 ft of you. Polearm Master triggers an opportunity attack because it entered your reach.
- You hit it. Sentinel drops its speed to 0.
- The creature is now stuck 10 ft away from you, not adjacent, not able to close the gap without provoking more OAs.
- On its turn, it can't Disengage past you, and if it attacks an ally, Sentinel lets you counter-attack.
This combination can pin a creature in place when the opportunity attack hits. It is a strong control package for a melee character who can consistently use both its weapon and Reaction triggers.
Best on: Fighter, Paladin with reach weapons.
War Caster + Resilient (Constitution)
The Concentration Protection Stack. War Caster gives advantage on CON saves to maintain Concentration. Resilient (CON) gives proficiency on those saves, plus a +1 CON bump.
With both, you're rolling a d20 twice (advantage) plus your full CON modifier plus Proficiency Bonus on every Concentration check. That makes Concentration checks much easier to pass.
Best on: Wizard, Sorcerer, Druid, Bard: any class whose whole turn depends on keeping a Concentration spell up.
Fey Touched + Shadow Touched
Two complementary picks that together give you Misty Step, Invisibility, and two bonus spells (one Enchantment/Divination, one Illusion/Necromancy). That's a complete utility package from just two feat slots.
The +1 stat bump on each means you're also getting +2 to your primary spellcasting stat across both feats. For SAD (Single Ability Dependent) casters, this is nearly as efficient as two ASIs while also adding four spells.
Best on: Warlocks, Rangers, Bards, and any half-caster who values versatility over raw damage.
Alert (Origin Feat) + Assassin Rogue
This is not a General Feat combo. Alert is an Origin Feat you pick up at level 1 through your Background (see the Origin Feats guide), not a level-4 competitor on this list. It matters here because an Assassin Rogue benefits from acting before enemies. Assassin's Assassinate feature gives you automatic crits and advantage against creatures that have not acted yet in combat. If you win initiative, every creature in the encounter is eligible.
Alert adds your Proficiency Bonus to Initiative, improving the chance that you act before enemies. When that happens, Assassin's Assassinate can deliver automatic crits in the first round.
Best on: Assassin Rogue. Pair with the Precision Attack Maneuver if you dip into Battle Master.
Forgotten Realms Pick: Genie Magic
Heroes of Faerun adds Genie Magic, a General Feat for level 4 or higher. It increases Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma by 1 and grants one daily action-cast level 1 Sorcerer spell of the character's choice. That spell automatically scales as though cast with a level 2 slot at level 11 and a level 3 slot at level 17.
Verdict: ● A flexible half-feat for a mental-ability character who wants a specific Sorcerer utility or combat spell without a multiclass. It is more useful when the chosen spell remains relevant at its automatic higher-level casting than when it is only a one-time novelty.
For level-1 setting choices, see the D&D 2024 Origin Feats guide and the D&D 2024 Feat guide hub.
Bottom Line
Fey-Touched, Sentinel, War Caster, and Sharpshooter are strong starting points when their prerequisite and trigger match the character. Shadow-Touched, Polearm Master, and the Concentration Protection Stack are similarly useful in the right build. Lucky and Alert are Origin Feats, so compare them in that guide rather than treating them as level-4 General Feat competitors.
Weapon Master and Lightly Armored are narrow training choices, not default optimization picks. Take them only when their exact benefit solves a real build constraint.
Plan your feat progression before level 4. Start with a two-feat combo or a clear role, then choose one or two Blue feats as anchors and fill the remaining choices around your campaign's needs.
