This guide is part of the D&D 2024 Feat Guides hub, ranking feat picks for the Ranger.
Ranger feat priorities split around two things: protecting Hunter's Mark concentration when that spell is central to your build, and picking the General Feat that matches your weapon. The 2024 rules include Origin, General, Fighting Style, and Epic Boon feats, and a Ranger can draw value from each category when it is available.
This guide ranks Ranger feat options, flags the ones that do not fit the class, and lays out a level-by-level progression.

Ranger Feat Priorities
- Protect Hunter's Mark concentration when it matters to your build — War Caster or Resilient (Con) can be valuable when you expect to maintain the spell through repeated hits.
- The General Feat that matches your weapon — Crossbow Expert for hand crossbow builds, Sharpshooter for longbow builds.
- A background that reinforces your build — Savage Attacker (Soldier) or Skilled (Charlatan/Noble).
- Skulker for a Gloom Stalker build — staying hidden after a miss pairs directly with the subclass's darkness identity.
- The class-recommended Epic Boon at level 19 — Boon of Dimensional Travel supports repositioning after an Attack or Magic action.
Hot Take: Hunter's Mark is useful, but it is not a reason to take concentration protection by default. Pick War Caster or Resilient when the spell and your expected incoming pressure make the investment pay off.
Top Feats for Ranger
● Crossbow Expert
Ignore the loading property on crossbows, take no disadvantage on ranged attacks in melee range, and add your ability modifier to the extra attack from Dual Wielding with a Light-property hand crossbow. There is no separate bonus-action hand crossbow attack in the 2024 version. The value is in removing the loading and melee-range penalties, and in making a two-hand-crossbow Dual Wielder build's second attack hit properly. Full breakdown in the General Feats guide.
● Sharpshooter
Ignore half and three-quarters cover, and ignore the long-range disadvantage penalty. No damage rider or accuracy trade-off attached in 2024. It's a pure accuracy feat, and that alone justifies it on a longbow Ranger.
● Skulker
Blindsight out to 10 feet, Advantage on a Stealth check made as part of the Hide action, and missing with a ranged attack while hidden does not reveal your position. Pairs directly with Gloom Stalker's darkness-focused subclass identity.
● Sentinel
Stops a hit creature's movement, lets you make an opportunity attack when an ally near you is hit, and punishes Disengage attempts. It suits a melee-focused Ranger build that needs control around nearby allies.
● War Caster
Advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration, plus a spell opportunity attack and the ability to perform Somatic components while holding weapons or a Shield. Hunter's Mark rewards keeping concentration when it is part of your combat plan, making this a strong early pick for Rangers who expect to take repeated hits.
● Savage Attacker (Origin Feat)
Granted by the Soldier background. Once per turn, reroll your weapon damage dice and use either result. It supports a melee-leaning or dual-role Ranger without using an ASI slot because it comes from your background choice. See the Origin Feats guide for the full background-to-feat table.
● Boon of Dimensional Travel (Epic Boon, level 19)
The Ranger class recommends this Epic Boon. It increases an ability score of your choice and lets you teleport after an Attack or Magic action, giving an archer or melee Ranger a way to reposition without giving up its turn. Full detail in the Epic Boons guide.

Start BuildingFeats to Avoid
Great Weapon Master: A Ranger's identity centers on ranged weapons or finesse melee weapons, not Heavy two-handed weapons. This feat does not fit the class's usual weapon choices.
Elemental Adept: Requires committing to a single damage type. A Ranger's damage mostly comes from weapon attacks and Hunter's Mark, not a single-element spell list.
Heavy Armor Master / Heavily Armored: Rangers lack the Strength investment and armor proficiency progression to make heavy armor a priority.
Example Feat Progression
Character creation: Choose a background for its Origin Feat. Soldier (Savage Attacker) or Charlatan/Noble (Skilled).
Level 4: Crossbow Expert (hand crossbow builds) or Sharpshooter (longbow builds). This is your first General Feat and should match your weapon.
Level 8: War Caster, if your build leans on Hunter's Mark concentration; Skulker for a Gloom Stalker build.
Level 12: Sentinel for a melee-leaning build, or the concentration feat you did not take at level 8.
Level 19: Boon of Dimensional Travel, the class-recommended Epic Boon.
