This guide is part of the D&D 2024 Feat Guides hub and pairs with the D&D 2024 Bard Guide.
Bards receive a background's Origin Feat at character creation, then gain a feat choice at Bard levels 4, 8, 12, and 16. Level 19 offers an Epic Boon or another feat you qualify for. A background feat establishes the character's starting job, while later choices should solve problems your actual campaign has revealed.

Short answer
For a Bard who regularly maintains an important spell, compare War Caster and Resilient (Constitution). Inspiring Leader helps a Bard who wants to support the party between fights. Your background can add a distinct identity before any level 4 choice: Musician for an Entertainer, Alert for a Criminal or Guard, Lucky for a Merchant or Wayfarer, or Skilled for a Noble or Scribe.
Bard feat priorities
- Protect concentration only if your play pattern actually depends on it.
- Keep Charisma and your core ability scores in view when a feat offers a +1 increase.
- Use an Origin Feat to establish a skill, initiative, luck, or rest-based support role at level 1.
- At level 19, choose an Epic Boon for the campaign's endgame rather than treating it as a routine level 4 pick.
Best feats for Bard
| Feat | Consider it when... |
|---|---|
| War Caster ● | You commonly maintain Concentration and want Advantage on the Constitution saves that keep a spell running. Its +1 to Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma can also complete an odd score. |
| Resilient (Constitution) ● | You lack Constitution save proficiency and a +1 Constitution increase fits your scores. It is a different concentration tool, not a mandatory companion to War Caster. |
| Inspiring Leader ● | Your group takes Short or Long Rests before difficult scenes and benefits from temporary hit points. The performance can be a speech, song, or dance, which gives a Bard a natural way to use it. |
| Fey-Touched ● | You want a Charisma increase, Misty Step, and a selected level 1 Divination or Enchantment spell. Check the rest of your prepared spell plan before using this to duplicate a job you already cover. |
| Musician (Origin Feat) ● | You choose the Entertainer background and want to give Heroic Inspiration to allies after a rest. It is a character-creation choice, not a level 4 General Feat. |
| Alert (Origin Feat) ● | You choose Criminal or Guard and want better initiative positioning plus the option to exchange initiative with a willing ally. It does not stack with a nonexistent Jack of All Trades initiative bonus. |
| Lucky (Origin Feat) ● | You choose Merchant or Wayfarer and want flexible insurance on important d20 Tests. This is useful when the table values clutch checks more than a specialized background feature. |
| Skilled (Origin Feat) ● | You choose Noble or Scribe and want three additional skill or tool proficiencies. It works best when the party needs broader coverage, not merely more proficiency in areas the Bard already owns. |
| Boon of Fate ● | You reach level 19 and want to help or hinder a nearby creature after a d20 Test succeeds or fails. The 2d4 adjustment makes the Bard's support role matter in high-stakes scenes. |
Build Your D&D 2024 Character
The D&D 2024 character builder is live - build a Beastkin, a Kobold, or whatever your table is missing, free, right now.
Start BuildingWar Caster or Resilient (Constitution)?
War Caster gives Advantage on Constitution saves made to maintain Concentration, while Resilient grants Constitution save proficiency if you lack it and increases Constitution by 1. The right choice depends on your current Constitution score, how often concentration is threatened, and whether the other War Caster benefits would see play. Take one when the campaign demonstrates the need. Do not assume every Bard must spend two feat choices on the pair.
Origin Feats come from backgrounds
The 2024 background system makes the starting feat part of character creation. A performance-centered Bard can take Entertainer for Musician. A Bard who wants to act early can choose Criminal or Guard for Alert. Merchant and Wayfarer supply Lucky, while Noble and Scribe provide Skilled. Use the Origin Feats guide for the wider background map.
A practical progression
Character creation: Choose the background that makes sense for the character's story and first-party job. Musician, Alert, Lucky, and Skilled are all sound choices when their background also suits the concept.
Level 4: Take War Caster or Resilient (Constitution) if concentration failures have been costing you important turns. Otherwise, an Ability Score Improvement can be the cleaner choice.
Level 8 and later: Add Inspiring Leader when rest-based temporary hit points help the party, or Fey-Touched when its spell access and ability increase fill a gap.
Level 19: Consider Boon of Fate if the campaign often turns on consequential d20 Tests. The Bard class recommends Boon of Spell Recall, so compare party-facing d20 intervention with how often recovering a spell slot changes your day.
Campaign-specific Bard feat options
If the table is using Arcana Unleashed, Arcane Artist, Arcane Eloquence, and Arcane Omens are Origin Feats with Charisma-compatible spellcasting and support tools. Enchantment Adept and Illusion Adept are level 4 General Feats for spellcasters; each adds themed prepared spells and a feature that rewards casting from that school. Pick one because its school and play pattern fit the Bard, not because it is an automatic upgrade over a PHB choice.
The other approved books have stronger setting gates. In a Forgotten Realms game, Boon of Communication and Boon of Revelry are credible Charisma-focused level-19 options. In Eberron, a Bard who meets the setting requirement can build around a Dragonmark; use the D&D 2024 Dragonmark Feats guide for the mark, Greater Mark, and prerequisite details. In Ravenloft, a Dark Gift can replace an Origin Feat only with DM permission and carries a drawback, so start with the D&D 2024 Dark Gift Feats guide instead of treating it as a routine Bard feat.
Hot take: A Bard with a tidy concentration plan can get more mileage from a feat that changes the party's options than from stacking every available concentration bonus. Let the table's encounters decide.
