This guide is part of the D&D 2024 Feat Guides hub, ranking feat picks for the Fighter.
Fighter feat priorities are direct: pick the General Feat that matches your weapon, then layer in control or durability. The 2024 feat system splits options across four categories (Origin, chosen through your background, General, Fighting Style, and Epic Boon), and a Fighter gets more feat slots than almost any other class to spend across all of them.
This guide ranks Fighter feat options, flags the ones that do not fit the class, and lays out a level-by-level progression.

Fighter Feat Priorities
- Polearm Master or Great Weapon Master — your first General Feat at level 4 should match your weapon: reach for Polearm Master, Heavy for Great Weapon Master.
- A background that reinforces your build — Savage Attacker (Soldier) or Tough (Farmer) both fit before you make a single class-level choice.
- Sentinel for a control-focused Polearm Master build — the two feats combine into a loop that stops enemies from leaving your reach.
- A second offense or durability feat — whichever your first pick did not cover.
- The right Epic Boon at level 19 — Boon of Combat Prowess is the Fighter's recommended option; Boon of Irresistible Offense is a damage-focused alternative.
Top Feats for Fighter
● Polearm Master
A bonus action strike with the butt end of a polearm plus an opportunity attack when a creature enters your reach. Combined with Sentinel, this can make entering your reach costly and stop a creature you hit from moving. See the full General Feats guide for the complete breakdown.
● Great Weapon Master
Adds your Proficiency Bonus to damage on every Heavy weapon hit, plus a bonus action attack on a kill or critical hit. The 2024 rework removed the old -5/+10 accuracy trade-off entirely.
● Sentinel
Stops a hit creature's movement, lets you make an opportunity attack when an ally near you is hit, and punishes Disengage attempts. The other half of the Polearm Master combo, and a strong standalone pick for any Fighter holding a front line.
● Savage Attacker (Origin Feat)
Granted by the Soldier background. Once per turn, reroll your weapon damage dice and use either result. It comes from your background rather than consuming an Ability Score Improvement choice.
● Tough (Origin Feat)
Granted by the Farmer background. +2 HP per level, which stacks well with a Fighter's d10 Hit Die. See the Origin Feats guide for the full background-to-feat table.
● Durable
A General Feat that also adds +1 Constitution: Defy Death gives Advantage on Death Saving Throws, and Speedy Recovery lets you spend a Bonus Action to expend a Hit Die, roll it, and regain that much HP. A natural follow-up if your background already gave you Tough.
● Boon of Irresistible Offense (Epic Boon, level 19)
Also increases your Strength or Dexterity by 1 (max 30). Your weapon attacks ignore resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage. When you roll a natural 20 on one of these attacks, you also add your full Strength or Dexterity score (not just the modifier) to the damage. High-level constructs, devils, demons, and undead commonly resist physical damage. The resistance bypass keeps a Fighter's damage output reliable against exactly the enemies that would otherwise blunt it, and the nat-20 bonus turns a crit into a massive spike. Full detail in the Epic Boons guide.
● Boon of Combat Prowess (Epic Boon, level 19)
Also increases one ability score by 1 (max 30). When you miss with an attack roll, you can turn the miss into a hit. Once you use this, you can't use it again until the start of your next turn, roughly once per round, not gated behind a rest. A Fighter making multiple attacks per turn gets solid value from insurance against a single bad roll every round.

Start BuildingFeats to Avoid
War Caster / Ritual Caster: Fighters have no spellcasting ability score modifier in a single-class build, aside from a rare Eldritch Knight who already gets War Caster-adjacent benefits from the subclass itself.
Elemental Adept / Spell Sniper: Both require a spellcasting ability score modifier a single-class Fighter does not have.
Lightly Armored / Moderately Armored: Fighters already have every armor proficiency from the class itself. These feats add nothing you do not already have.
Example Feat Progression
Character creation: Choose a background for its Origin Feat. Soldier (Savage Attacker) or Farmer (Tough) both reinforce the class identity from level 1.
Level 4: Polearm Master (reach weapon builds) or Great Weapon Master (Heavy weapon builds). This is your first General Feat and should match the weapon you are already running.
Level 6: Sentinel, if you took Polearm Master. The combo comes fully online here.
Level 8: Durable, or the offense feat you did not take at level 4 if your build wants both.
Level 19: Boon of Combat Prowess is the Fighter's recommended Epic Boon. Choose Boon of Irresistible Offense instead when your campaign repeatedly pits weapon users against resistance to physical damage.
FAQ
What is the best feat for a Fighter in D&D 2024? Polearm Master for reach builds, Great Weapon Master for Heavy weapon builds.
