Introduction
Focus spells are PF2e Remastered's rechargeable class magic. They are not a second spell-slot system. They are class engines: the Bard keeps the party's math humming, the Druid makes an order feel real, the Cleric turns a deity domain into table impact, the Witch leans on hexes, and the Psychic turns cantrips into amplified problems.
That recharge is the whole bargain. If the party gets 10-minute rests, focus spells are some of the best value in the system. If the GM is running a chase, siege, infiltration, or dungeon alarm clock, focus spells become scarce tactical ammunition. Neither mode is wrong, but pretending they are the same is how players end the day with full Focus Points and empty excuses.

Focus Spell Rules That Actually Matter
| Rule | Practical Meaning | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Focus pool ● | Focus spells draw from Focus Points instead of ranked spell slots. | This makes them renewable class power, not daily treasure to bury in the backpack. |
| Most focus spells cost 1 Focus Point ● | Your main constraint is usually how many meaningful focus turns you get before Refocusing. | A spell you cast every fight has to fit your normal action pattern. |
| Refocus is a 10-minute activity ● | Time between encounters is part of focus spell balance. | Medicine, Crafting, scouting, and Refocus all compete for the same table minute. |
| Automatic heightening ● | Focus spells heighten to half your level rounded up. | This keeps class magic relevant without constantly buying new versions. |
| Class limits ● | Some engines have extra rules, such as Bard composition limits or Witch hex limits. | Read the class loop, not just the spell text. The best spell can still be wrong if it collides with your turn. |
| Action cost ● | One-action focus spells are much easier to fit than two-action focus spells on busy classes. | PF2e rewards turns that do two useful things. Focus spells that eat the whole turn must be worth it. |
| Attribute and DC fit ● | Offensive focus spells care about your spell DC or class DC. | A low-DC archetype blast is often less impressive than the feat name suggests. |
| Sustain or stance pressure ● | Some focus effects ask for repeated actions, setup, or active maintenance. | These can be excellent, but only if your build has room to keep paying the action tax. |
What Makes a Focus Spell Good
| Focus Trait | Evaluation |
|---|---|
| Supports your normal turn ● | The best focus spells make the thing you already do better: Strike, command, sustain, defend, reposition, debuff, or buff. |
| Saves ranked slots ● | If it handles routine fights, your real slots survive for severe encounters, hard counters, and campaign-scale utility. |
| Uses one action cleanly ● | One-action support, buffs, hexes, and composition tricks are premium because they leave room for movement and offense. |
| Still matters on imperfect turns ● | Defensive, support, healing, and party-math focus spells are reliable because they do not always hinge on a single enemy saving throw. |
| Solves a repeated problem ● | Healing companions, protecting allies, adding accuracy, forcing movement, or punishing one target every fight is real value. |
| Only looks cool once per campaign ● | A narrow focus spell can be correct for a campaign theme, but it is not a general recommendation. |
| Uses your worst stat or DC ● | If the enemy keeps shrugging it off because your build cannot support the DC, the focus spell is decorative furniture. |
Class Focus Engines
| Class or Engine | How to Think About It |
|---|---|
| Bard compositions ● | Courageous Anthem is the baseline party-math engine, while Lingering Composition and Fortissimo Composition make the action economy nastier. Remember that Bards normally manage composition limits instead of stacking every song like a tavern jukebox with tenure. |
| Cleric domains ● | Domain Initiate, Advanced Domain, and Domain Focus are strongest when the domain spell serves your deity role: protection, healing, mobility, knowledge, combat pressure, or party rescue. |
| Druid order spells ● | Tempest Surge, Heal Animal, Cornucopia, Untamed Form, and other order tools make Druid subclasses feel different at the table instead of only on the character sheet. |
| Witch hexes and lessons ● | Hexes are the Witch's routine pressure. The catch is that Witch turns are busy and hex limits are real, so extra options must beat your default hex plan. |
| Psychic amps ● | Amps turn psi cantrips into focus-powered spikes. Keep an eye on special Refocus rules and avoid off-theme focus pickups that make your Psychic engine clumsier. |
| Animist vessel spells ● | Vessel spells make apparitions matter in combat, especially when the spell's Sustain or repeat use lines up with the spirit you actually plan to channel. |
| Champion devotion spells ● | Champion focus magic is best when it reinforces front-line protection, emergency recovery, or divine pressure instead of pretending the Champion is a full caster in plate. |
| Wizard school magic ● | School focus spells are best when they fill repeatable tactical gaps so your prepared slots can stay flexible. Linked Focus matters more when the school spell is part of every adventuring day. |
| Sorcerer bloodline focus ● | Bloodline focus options should reinforce your tradition and blood magic rhythm. If they ask you to play against your spell list, be suspicious. |
| Oracle mystery focus ● | Oracle focus choices are strongest when they make the mystery's intended battlefield job clearer, not when they add another button to an already dramatic dashboard. |
| Monk and Ranger focus paths ● | Martial focus options can be excellent because they recharge, but they must compete with Strikes, movement, stances, Flurry-style turns, companion actions, and other class pressure. |
Sourcebook Focus Options That Change A Build
The supplied books do not create one universal "best focus spell" list. They add class packages whose value depends on the weapon, thrall, eidolon, or school loop already on your sheet. Get access settled before you build around one.
| Build decision | Source-backed focus result | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Wizard school packages ● | Impossible Magic adds Breathtaking Influence, Keen Inquiry, Nexian Spaces, and Quantic Control. Their paired focus spells support social play, Recall Knowledge, cover and battlefield control, or weakness and energy defense. See the Wizard class guide and Wizard feat guide before committing. | One package repeatedly solves a problem your prepared slots otherwise have to cover, and your GM has approved the Uncommon access. A school name alone is not a build plan. |
| Magus conflux options ● | Impossible Magic offers booming blast, conjurer's countermeasure, dimensional assault, force fang, force fling, hasted assault, runic impression, shielding strike, shooting star, spinning staff, and thunderous strike. | The option matches your weapon, hands, range, and the turn you want while it refreshes Spellstrike. Use the Magus class guide and Magus feat guide for the study and feat decision. |
| Necromancer grave spells ● | These uncommon focus spells create, command, consume, reposition, or exploit thralls. Their value comes from the Necromancer's class loop, not from a generic damage or control ranking. Use the Necromancer class guide and Necromancer feat guide for the thrall and feat decisions. | Your normal turn can establish or spend the right thrall position, and the spell accomplishes a job your prepared occult slots should not pay for. |
| Summoner link spells ● | These uncommon focus spells support an eidolon's pressure, adaptation, sustained recovery, or separation plan. They share the Summoner's focus pool and have to fit the pair's shared turn. Use the Summoner class guide and Summoner feat guide for eidolon and feat choices. | The spell advances the eidolon's current encounter role without breaking the actions the pair already needs for movement, attacks, or casting. |
| Witch hexes and lessons ● | These supplied books do not verify a new Witch focus option for this update. The core choice remains whether the hex or lesson improves the familiar-and-hex rhythm. | It gives the Witch class guide and Witch feat guide a cleaner normal turn instead of another action conflict. |
| Archetype focus pickups ● | No named supplied-book archetype focus option is verified here. The usual gate remains DC, attribute, action cost, access, and a shared Focus Point pool. | It beats a class option at a job you actually perform. Check Free Archetype, spellcasting archetypes, and multiclass archetypes before spending feats. |

Best Focus Spell Jobs
| Job | What You Want |
|---|---|
| Party accuracy and damage math ● | Bard-style support is the cleanest example: the effect improves other characters without asking the Bard to win every roll personally. |
| Repeatable defense or rescue ● | Champion, Cleric, and some Druid or Witch options shine when they stop a bad turn from becoming a funeral invoice. |
| Routine single-target pressure ● | Good when your DC is strong and the target is likely to care; worse when you are fishing into the enemy's best save. |
| Companion, familiar, or apparition support ● | Animal order Druids, Witches, Rangers, and Animists all benefit when focus magic supports the extra body or spirit they are already using. |
| Movement and positioning ● | Focus mobility is valuable because bad positioning is one of PF2e's most expensive problems. |
| Narrow theme button ● | Perfect in the right adventure, embarrassing in the wrong one. The dragon-hunting umbrella is great until it is sunny. |
| Low-DC damage trick ● | If the spell requires enemies to fail against a DC you do not invest in, that spell is asking for a participation trophy. |
Refocus and the Ten-Minute Party
Focus spells are balanced around pauses. That does not mean every table should allow a free reset after every combat. It means the 10-minute window is a real gameplay lever, just like encounter difficulty, terrain, conditions, treasure, and skill DCs.
| Between-Fight Activity | Who Cares | Focus Spell Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Refocus ● | Any focus user | Restores the class engine and encourages spending focus spells during the next meaningful scene. |
| Treat Wounds ● | Most parties | Competes for the same downtime window and often pairs naturally with Refocus. |
| Repair ● | Shield users, Inventors, gear-heavy parties | Makes defensive focus routines stronger because broken gear is less likely to stay broken. |
| Identify Magic ● | Arcana, Occultism, Religion, and Nature users | Turns post-fight cleanup into useful information instead of dead air. |
| Scout or Search ● | Stealth, Survival, Perception-heavy parties | Lets focus users recharge while someone else manages the next-room problem. |
| No pause ● | Chases, alarms, wars, ambush chains | Focus spells become scarce. Spend them only when they change the scene. |
Focus Spell Pitfalls
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Saving every Focus Point ● | Spend focus when it meaningfully improves the current encounter. Renewable resources are not heirlooms. |
| Casting after the fight is decided ● | Focus early enough to change enemy actions, party accuracy, damage taken, or positioning. |
| Taking too many competing focus options ● | Prefer one excellent routine and one backup use case over four spells that all ask for the same action. |
| Ignoring class limits ● | Bard compositions, Witch hexes, Psychic amps, and sustained vessel spells all have play-pattern rules. Build around those rules. |
| Using a weak DC ● | Do not choose offensive focus spells from a source your character cannot support. Accuracy and DCs are not flavor text. |
| Assuming the GM owes you a rest ● | Ask how much time pressure the campaign uses. A dungeon alarm clock changes focus spell value immediately. |
GM Core Pacing Advice
GM Core style encounter pacing is the hidden focus spell dial. The same Bard, Druid, Witch, or Psychic can feel generous or starved depending on how often the adventure permits 10-minute resets.
| Campaign Rhythm | Focus Spell Result |
|---|---|
| Classic room-to-room dungeon ● | Focus users usually get to express their core loop if the party controls noise, scouting, and doors. |
| Timed infiltration ● | Refocus is costly. Focus spells become precision tools for scenes that cannot fail. |
| Wilderness travel ● | Refocus is often available between hazards and fights, so focus utility and repeatable defenses get better. |
| Siege or war arc ● | Focus spells help define repeated battlefield roles, but chained scenes can punish careless spending. |
| Social investigation ● | Combat focus options may sit idle while knowledge, deception, healing, and subtle support do the work. |
Archetypes and Free Archetype
Free Archetype makes focus spells tempting because dedications can add flashy buttons without stealing class feats. That is useful when the new spell supports your job. It is wasteful when it gives a low-DC blast to a character who already had better things to do.
Spellcasting archetypes, caster archetypes, and multiclass archetypes deserve the same test: does this focus spell use my good attributes, fit my actions, and refill in the campaign's actual pace? If the answer is no, the spell can stay gorgeous in someone else's build.
Links to Class Spell Guides
Start with the class article that owns the focus engine: Animist spells, Bard spells, Champion spells, Cleric spells, Druid spells, Magus spells, Necromancer spells, Oracle spells, Psychic spells, Sorcerer spells, Summoner spells, Witch spells, and Wizard spells.
For system context, use Cantrips, Heightening Spells, Combat Spells, Utility Spells, and Actions and Activities.
Common Mistakes
- Treating focus spells like rare magic instead of rechargeable class power.
- Picking a focus spell because the name is cool while ignoring action cost.
- Forgetting that automatic heightening keeps old focus spells relevant.
- Building a Psychic, Bard, Witch, or Animist without checking the special limits on the engine.
- Taking archetype focus spells that fight your real class loop.
- Expecting every adventuring day to allow perfect 10-minute recovery.
- Forgetting that Medicine, Repair, and Refocus should be planned together.
Hot Take: A sourcebook focus option is not automatically stronger because it is uncommon or flashy. The Magus option that both solves this turn and refreshes Spellstrike, or the Wizard school spell that handles the campaign's repeat problem, will see more play than a clever pick that loses to your action economy.
