Introduction
The Witch is Pathfinder 2e's prepared caster for players who want magic with strings attached. You do not just pick a spell list. You choose a patron, get a familiar that acts as your spell repository, cast one hex per turn, expand your kit through lessons, and build a daily spell plan around the tradition your patron grants.
That makes Witch very strong when the player is deliberate and strangely disappointing when played like "Wizard, but spooky." The familiar is not a prop. The patron is not a wallpaper choice. Your hex cantrip is not a ribbon. They are the class.

This guide pairs best with Witch feats, Best Witch spells, Focus spells, Cantrips, Companions and familiars, Staves and wands, Consumables, and the main equipment guide.

Disclaimer
This guide ranks Witch options for practical table value, not for replacing Player Core. Witch is a prepared caster with a patron, familiar, lessons, and hex rules layered on top of normal spell planning, so the rankings assume the player is willing to track spells, familiar positioning, and one-hex-per-turn sequencing.
The baseline uses Player Core for the remastered Witch, GM Core for treasure and encounter assumptions, Monster Core-style trait and condition play, Dark Archive Remastered where the Unseen Broker patron and its lessons are called out, and Lost Omens: Rival Academies for the rare Cobyslarni patron. If your table does not use an optional source, ignore its rows and use the core patron advice.
Rating Legend
| Marker | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Best-in-role, broadly useful, or unusually efficient |
| ● | Strong and dependable |
| ● | Good in the right campaign or build |
| ● | Too narrow, costly, or fragile for most Witches |
Witch Feature Ratings
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Patron ● | Your patron decides tradition, skill, first lesson, hex cantrip, and familiar ability. This is the biggest choice on the sheet. |
| Familiar ● | Your familiar stores your spells, gains extra abilities, and delivers patron benefits when you Cast or Sustain hexes. Protect it. Use it. Respect it. |
| Hex cantrip ● | A repeatable one-action or low-action pressure tool gives the Witch a turn identity even when conserving slots. |
| Prepared spellcasting ● | Preparing from the familiar rewards scouting, scroll access, learned spells, and encounter clues. |
| Lessons ● | Lessons add hexes and spells, including spells that can patch tradition gaps. |
| Intelligence skills ● | You can carry several knowledge and utility skills without gutting your combat numbers. |
| 6 HP per level ● | You are fragile. Constitution and positioning are not optional unless your GM has banned consequences. |
| Unarmored defense ● | Fine with Dexterity and runes, but not forgiving. Your best armor is distance, terrain, and not becoming famous to the enemy archer. |
| Simple weapons ● | A backup weapon is fine. Building Witch around weapon attacks is usually trying to make soup with a fork. |
Patron Rankings
Patrons are ranked for broad campaign value, combat impact, spell tradition, familiar ability, and how often their hex cantrip matters. Flavor can overrule this, but the mechanics are not equally forgiving.
| Rank | Patron | Best for | Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Resentment ● | Debuff control, boss pressure, condition teams | Evil Eye is a brutal one-action hex cantrip because sickened taxes enemy actions and can be hard to shake while the hex remains active. The familiar's condition-extension effect is even nastier when the party applies frightened, slowed, clumsy, stupefied, or other timed penalties. |
| 2 | Spinner of Threads ● | Support casters, clutch protection, accuracy smoothing | Nudge Fate is not flashy, but retroactively turning the exact failed check into a success is beautiful support math. The familiar AC swing also works on allies or enemies, which gives it real tactical flexibility. |
| 3 | Faith's Flamekeeper ● | Divine support, damage buffs, resilient parties | Stoke the Heart adds repeatable damage support, while the familiar grants temporary Hit Points near it after your hexes. The divine list gives healing and protection, though you will want scrolls and lessons for control variety. |
| 4 | The Inscribed One ● | Arcane utility, knowledge play, tactical setup | Discern Secrets is excellent when the table values Recall Knowledge, Seek, and Sense Motive. The familiar can create flanking pressure after hexes, which is funny for a bookish patron and actually useful if the party uses positioning. |
| 5 | Cobyslarni (Rare) ● | Occult research, recurring Recall Knowledge, familiar teamwork | Rival Academies adds this rare patron. It turns every Cast or Sustain a hex into a possible free familiar Recall Knowledge check using your bonus. Choose it only when the group uses those answers and the GM permits the access. |
| 6 | Silence in Snow ● | Primal control, cold themes, difficult-terrain play | Clinging Ice slows movement and the familiar can add short-lived difficult terrain. It is good when maps matter and less impressive in theater-of-the-mind slugfests. |
| 7 | Starless Shadow ● | Darkness tactics, fear setup, stealthy occult parties | Shroud of Night and the familiar's frightened rider can be excellent, but they depend on concealment, lighting, and familiar positioning. Strong at the right table, fiddly at the wrong one. |
| 8 | Wilding Steward ● | Wilderness games, animal/plant/fungus-heavy campaigns | Wilding Word is flavorful and sometimes excellent, but its best angle narrows when the campaign moves away from natural creature types. The familiar's temporary senses are very useful in exploration-heavy games. |
| Optional | Unseen Broker ● | Dark Archive occult bargains, social pressure, pact themes | Dark Archive Remastered adds this occult patron. Pact Broker punishes hostile action after a supernatural bargain, and the familiar can make a nearby enemy off-guard when you Cast or Sustain a hex. It is flavorful, real, and very table-tone dependent. |
Familiar Play Rankings
The Witch familiar is stronger than a normal familiar and is part of your spellcasting infrastructure. It gets patron-linked power, daily ability choices, and more extra familiar abilities as you level.
| Familiar use | Advice |
|---|---|
| Spell repository ● | Your familiar knows the spells you prepare from. Feed it scrolls, Learn a Spell opportunities, and tradition-legal options so your daily prep improves over time. |
| Patron familiar ability ● | Most patrons reward you every round you Cast or Sustain a hex, but only if the familiar is positioned well. Think of its square as part of your spell effect. |
| Cobyslarni: Insightful Observation ● | Each hex you Cast or Sustain can trigger a free Recall Knowledge check through the familiar, using any skill in which you are trained or better. Treat its square and safety as part of your information routine. |
| Phase Familiar ● | If your familiar will be exposed, this is the defensive hex that keeps your class engine alive. A dead familiar returns, but losing positioning mid-fight still hurts. |
| Patron's Puppet ● | Free-action familiar command at turn start is excellent when familiar movement, Interact actions, or patron positioning matter. |
| Scouting and senses ● | The familiar can support exploration, especially with daily ability choices and Wilding Steward-style sensory boosts. Do not turn every dungeon into a solo familiar mission unless the table likes watching one player play chess against a door. |
| Familiar as flanker ● | The Inscribed One directly supports flanking. Other patrons can still use familiar positioning, but sending a fragile familiar into melee without a plan is ambition wearing a paper hat. |
| Familiar as disposable bait ● | It returns after daily preparations, but sacrificing it casually can cost spell logistics, class actions, and trust at the table. Also, it is rude. |
Lesson Rankings
Lessons matter because each one grants a hex and teaches the familiar a spell. That spell can help even when it is not normally on your tradition, so lessons are one of the Witch's best tools for breaking out of list limitations.
| Lesson | Best use |
|---|---|
| Lesson of Life ● | Life Boost is efficient, repeatable recovery over several rounds. It is one of the cleanest ways for a Witch to support a front line without spending a spell slot. |
| Lesson of Elements ● | Elemental Betrayal creates weakness to an element, which gets scary when the party can coordinate damage types. This is a party-build lesson, not a solo damage button. |
| Lesson of Protection ● | Blood Ward is best when Monster Core creature traits are identified and the party knows what they are fighting. It rewards Recall Knowledge and scouting. |
| Lesson of Dreams ● | Veil of Dreams pressures Perception, attack rolls, Will saves, and concentrate actions. It is especially good against enemies that rely on spells or complex abilities. |
| Lesson of Vengeance ● | Needle of Vengeance punishes a target for attacking a named ally. Good deterrence, especially when the party has a clear defender or vulnerable caster. |
| Lesson of Shadow ● | Malicious Shadow adds sustained offense, but it uses spell attacks and positioning assumptions. Stronger when the target will stay relevant for several rounds. |
| Lesson of Snow ● | Personal Blizzard adds concealment and cold pressure. It is better in messy fights than in quick cleanup encounters. |
| Lesson of Memory (Rare) ● | Cobyslarni's researched answer to a known recurring special action. Identify or observe the ability first; this is not a blind first-turn pick. |
| Lesson of Mischief ● | Deceiver's Cloak is excellent for intrigue, infiltration, and weird plans. It is less important in pure tactical dungeon crawling. |
| Lesson of Renewal ● | Restorative Moment is powerful when doomed, drained, and afflictions matter. In campaigns without those pressures, it can sit quietly in the corner. |
| Lesson of Death ● | Curse of Death is dramatic and dangerous, but Fortitude saves and death/void interactions make it more matchup-dependent than it looks. |
| Lesson of Vows (Rare) ● | A Cobyslarni lesson for intrigue where you know the target deceived or hid from you or an ally. Its trigger makes it poor as a generic combat selection. |
| Dark Archive: Lesson of Favors ● | Return the Favor rewards reaction-based party support. Good if allies regularly protect or enable you. |
| Dark Archive: Lesson of Bargains ● | Over the Coals is flavorful social-combat pressure, but it asks the GM and target behavior to matter. Great story spell, not a universal opener. |
Cobyslarni: Rare Patron, Research Engine
Cobyslarni is a rare occult patron from Lost Omens: Rival Academies. It grants Occultism, Lesson of Wandering Mind, and a Will-targeting mental hex that can impose stupefied while you sustain it. The real selling point is Familiar of Insightful Observation: whenever you Cast or Sustain a hex, your familiar can Recall Knowledge for free using your bonus and any skill in which you are trained or better.
That is a powerful information engine only if the table treats the answer as a decision. It works best when the party changes damage types, targets a weak save, avoids a defense, or identifies a recurring creature action. It is a bad reason to pick the patron if Recall Knowledge never changes the next turn, the enemy is a poor mental target, or the familiar cannot safely stay relevant.
| Cobyslarni choice | What changes at the table |
|---|---|
| Information overload ● | Sustained Will pressure gives an occult Witch a repeatable way to tax a creature's mental defenses. Do not force it into creatures that ignore mental effects or fights that end before a sustain pays off. |
| Insightful Observation ● | A hex-driven turn can also produce the knowledge that makes the party's next action better. Protect the familiar and agree on what the group does with identified information. |
| Calligraphy wyrm ● | This six-ability scholarly dragon familiar is for a character who wants its exact research, mobility, and unseen-creature tools. The ability requirement matters more than its charming theme. |
| Mockingfey ● | This four-ability familiar can create a short off-guard opening after a failed Will save. Take it when allies can capitalize, not just because a talking fey is funny. |
| Lesson of Memory ● | A rare greater lesson that punishes a known meaningful capability. It rewards Recall Knowledge and observation more than guessing. |
| Lesson of Vows ● | A rare greater lesson for campaigns with deception, stealth, and oaths. Its prior-behavior requirement is real. |
For the detailed familiar comparison and broader familiar rules, use Companions and familiars. For patron-specific spell preparation, use Best Witch spells and Occult spells.
Hot Take: Cobyslarni earns its rare access when the party uses the familiar's free Recall Knowledge to change what it does before the enemy's next turn.

Tradition Differences
Your patron tradition decides the default spell list. That means two Witches with the same class can solve completely different problems.
| Tradition | Best Witch patrons | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Occult ● | The Resentment, Spinner of Threads, Starless Shadow, Cobyslarni (Rare), Unseen Broker | Debuffs, mental pressure, illusions, emotion effects, knowledge play, and strong social magic. Occult Witch feels like the default "make enemies worse" build. |
| Arcane ● | The Inscribed One | Broad utility, control, elemental options, mobility, counter-magic, and problem-solving spells. Arcane Witch is the most Wizard-adjacent, but the familiar and hexes still define it. |
| Divine ● | Faith's Flamekeeper | Healing, protection, spirit damage, sanctification themes, and party support. Divine Witch needs lessons and items to widen its tactical menu. |
| Primal ● | Silence in Snow, Wilding Steward | Healing, elemental damage, terrain, mobility, plants, weather, and natural threats. Primal Witch is strong when maps, hazards, and Monster Core traits matter. |
For deeper spell planning, use Arcane spells, Divine spells, Occult spells, Primal spells, and Best Witch spells.
Ability Scores
| Attribute | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Intelligence ● | Start high. It powers your spell DC, spell attacks, preparation identity, and skill spread. |
| Dexterity ● | Helps AC, Reflex, initiative-adjacent positioning, and survival in unarmored defense. |
| Constitution ● | You have 6 HP per level. Put points here before your tragic backstory becomes a short story. |
| Wisdom ● | Helps Perception and Will. You already become very good at Will later, but noticing trouble early still matters. |
| Charisma ● | Useful for Deception, Diplomacy, Intimidation, or a patron-heavy social concept. Otherwise secondary. |
| Strength ● | Only matters for niche Witch's Armaments or carry capacity plans. Most Witches can leave it low. |
Best Ancestries And Heritages
Witch wants Intelligence, survivability, senses, familiar-friendly utility, and ancestry feats that do not fight your spellcasting. Start with the ancestry guides, heritage guide, and versatile heritages if you want the full menu.
| Ancestry or heritage | Why Witch likes it |
|---|---|
| Human ● | Flexible boosts and feat access are excellent on a class that wants Intelligence, Dexterity, Constitution, spell support, and sometimes extra class-feat pressure. |
| Elf ● | Speed, magic flavor, and Dexterity-friendly play fit back-line casting, though the lower durability pressure means Constitution matters. |
| Gnome ● | Primal, occult, and familiar-heavy Witch concepts feel natural, and gnome feat flavor pairs well with strange patrons. |
| Halfling ● | Defensive luck, stealth, and small-caster play fit support and fate-themed Witches. |
| Goblin ● | Great for chaotic occult, fire, stealth, and weird-familiar concepts, but build the defenses intentionally. |
| Ratfolk ● | Excellent for urban witches, scavenger knowledge, item play, and compact caster utility. |
| Catfolk ● | Mobility and perception themes can work well, especially for familiar-forward or primal Witches, but it is less mechanically automatic than Human. |
| Reflection ● | Strong story fit for weird patrons and identity horror, but ask the GM how much that heritage will matter before building around it. |
Best Skills
| Skill | Why Witch likes it |
|---|---|
| Arcana ● | Mandatory-feeling for arcane Witches and excellent for identifying magic, learning spells, and understanding arcane threats. |
| Occultism ● | Core for occult patrons, curses, mental magic, spirits, strange phenomena, Dark Archive-style play, and the rare Cobyslarni patron. |
| Nature ● | Key for primal patrons, wilderness threats, animals, plants, and natural hazards. |
| Religion ● | Key for divine patrons, undead, spirits, sanctification themes, and deity-adjacent campaigns. |
| Crafting ● | Strong with Cauldron, scroll and item interests, repair support, and magical-item downtime. |
| Medicine ● | Even a caster with healing access benefits from out-of-combat recovery. Medicine saves spell slots. |
| Society ● | Good for urban games, recall knowledge, languages, factions, and intrigue. |
| Deception ● | Excellent for Starless Shadow, Unseen Broker, and patron-as-bargain concepts. Skip it if your table mostly fights furniture-shaped stat blocks. |
Best Backgrounds
Backgrounds should reinforce the Witch's first two jobs: cast accurately and know what is going on. Use the backgrounds guide for the full planning layer.
| Background direction | Best Witch use |
|---|---|
| Magical scholar ● | Arcana, Occultism, Religion, or Nature support plus Intelligence fits nearly every patron. |
| Herbalist, apothecary, or crafter ● | Works with Cauldron, consumables, alchemy-adjacent flavor, downtime, and practical support. |
| Fortune-teller or occult investigator ● | Excellent for Spinner of Threads, Resentment, Starless Shadow, Cobyslarni, and Dark Archive-style campaigns. |
| Hermit, witness, or haunted survivor ● | Strong for patron mystery, curses, and GM-facing story hooks without weakening the stat plan. |
| Entertainer, courtier, or negotiator ● | Good for social patrons and Unseen Broker, but do not overpay Charisma if the campaign is mostly tactical combat. |
| Soldier or weapon-first background ● | Only take this for a specific Witch's Armaments concept. A normal Witch does not need martial backstory math. |
Best Feats
Use the full Witch feats guide for deeper feat planning. The short version:
| Feat or path | Best build |
|---|---|
| Cackle ● | Any Witch sustaining strong spells. Sustaining without spending your normal action is exactly the kind of action economy a caster wants. |
| Cauldron ● | Crafting Witches, support Witches, potion-heavy campaigns, and anyone who wants daily consumable value. |
| Basic Lesson ● | Nearly every Witch. More hexes and more familiar spells are class identity, not garnish. |
| Enhanced Familiar ● | Familiar-forward Witches, patron-positioning builds, scouts, and utility casters. |
| Reach Spell ● | Excellent for keeping fragile casters and familiar plans safer. |
| Counterspell ● | Good when you can predict enemy magic and prepare matching spells. Less consistent in random-monster campaigns. |
| Rites of Convocation ● | Summon-focused Witches who want flexibility from prepared slots. Pair with summoned creatures. |
| Greater Lesson and Major Lesson ● | Usually correct unless your build has a very specific feat chain. More lesson access keeps your spell plan fresh. |
| Steady Spellcasting ● | Helps when enemies punish manipulate actions or close aggressively. |
| Incredible Familiar ● | Great if your familiar is solving real problems daily. Overkill if it mostly rides in a pocket and judges people. |
| Ceremonial Knife ● | Flavorful extra wand access, but you need the right prepared spell and item rhythm to make it shine. |
| Witch's Armaments ● | Cool, but weapon combat is not the default Witch plan. Take it for a specific build, not because the art looked sharp. |
Best Equipment
| Equipment | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Staves and wands ● | Witch has prepared slots and wants repeatable casting depth. Staves, wands, and a ceremonial-knife plan can stretch your day. |
| Scrolls and consumables ● | Your familiar can learn spells from written magic, and scrolls also cover "I need this once" utility. |
| Explorer's clothing with runes ● | You are unarmored, so item bonuses and saving throw progression matter. Do not delay basic defenses. |
| Skill tools ● | Crafting, Medicine, Thievery, disguise, social, and exploration tools make your Intelligence skills matter outside spell slots. |
| Backup simple ranged weapon ● | Useful at low levels or when conserving resources, but it should not consume your build identity. |
| Potions and oils ● | Especially strong with Cauldron. Daily temporary options let you answer exploration and survival problems without burning slots. |
| Familiar-risk gear plan ● | This is less one item and more a habit: keep the familiar near enough to matter, far enough not to evaporate, and protected when enemies care. |
Best Archetypes
Archetypes are best when they solve a real gap. Use the archetypes hub, caster archetypes, spellcasting archetypes, Dark Archive archetypes, and Free Archetype guide for campaign-level context.
| Archetype direction | Best Witch use |
|---|---|
| Familiar-focused archetype ● | Doubles down on the class's strongest identity. Worth it if your table gives familiars meaningful exploration and combat positioning. |
| Medic ● | Keeps divine and non-divine Witches from spending too many slots on recovery. Strong in small parties. |
| Loremaster or knowledge archetype ● | Intelligence and Recall Knowledge already fit Witch. This is excellent when Monster Core identification changes tactics, including a Cobyslarni build. |
| Ritual or occult archetype ● | Good for patron-heavy, investigation, and Dark Archive campaigns. |
| Wizard or caster multiclass ● | Adds arcane depth, but Witch already has prepared casting workload. Take it for a specific list gap, not because more spell paperwork sounded relaxing. |
| Martial archetype ● | Usually not worth the ability score, feat, and gear pressure unless you are building around a very specific Witch's Armaments gimmick. |
Party Fit
Witch is strongest when the party knows what your patron is doing. If allies understand your hexes, familiar riders, and spell tradition, they can set up the right targets instead of treating you as "the caster with the ominous pet."
| Party need | Best Witch answer |
|---|---|
| Debuff control | The Resentment, occult spells, Evil Eye, condition stacking, and Monster Core save targeting. |
| Accuracy support | Spinner of Threads, Discern Secrets, Recall Knowledge, off-guard setup, and status bonuses that change exact failures. |
| Healing and attrition | Faith's Flamekeeper, Lesson of Life, Medicine, divine or primal lists, potions, and scrolls. |
| Exploration and clues | Intelligence skills, familiar scouting, Discern Secrets, tradition skills, rituals, and utility spells. |
| Terrain and movement control | Silence in Snow, primal spells, Clinging Ice, hazards, environment play, and map-aware tactics. |
| Intrigue and bargaining | Starless Shadow, Unseen Broker, occult spells, Deception, Society, and patron story hooks. |
Example Builds
| Build | Patron | Core plan | Best links |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resentment Debuffer | The Resentment | Open with Evil Eye, extend timed conditions through familiar positioning, prepare occult control, and coordinate with allies who apply frightened, slowed, clumsy, or off-guard. | Occult spells, conditions, monster traits |
| Fate Support Witch | Spinner of Threads | Use Nudge Fate to save key checks, protect allies or expose enemies with the familiar AC rider, and prepare spells that reward precision timing. | Focus spells, best skill feats, hero points |
| Arcane Script Witch | The Inscribed One | Lean into Arcana, knowledge, runes, counter-magic, and familiar-assisted flanking. Strong for players who like Wizard tools but want hex identity. | Arcane spells, Arcana, runes |
| Flamekeeper Support | Faith's Flamekeeper | Use Stoke the Heart, familiar temp HP, divine support spells, Medicine, and consumables to keep martial allies productive. | Divine spells, Medicine, consumables |
| Wild Patron Controller | Silence in Snow or Wilding Steward | Use primal spells, movement penalties, terrain, creature-type knowledge, and familiar senses to win exploration-heavy campaigns. | Primal spells, Nature, environment |
| Cobyslarni Research Witch | Cobyslarni (Rare) | Cast or sustain a hex only when the ensuing familiar Recall Knowledge can change the party's plan. Protect the familiar, target Will when mental effects fit, and choose Memory only after you know a meaningful enemy action. | Occult spells, Companions and familiars, creature traits |
Level 1-20 Build: Resentment Debuffer
This build assumes the Player Core Resentment patron, occult spellcasting, high Intelligence, and a party that understands conditions. It is the Witch build most likely to make a severe enemy regret having a turn.
| Level | Pick | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Resentment patron, Intelligence first, Dexterity and Constitution next | Evil Eye gives repeatable sickened pressure, while occult casting supplies debuffs, mental effects, illusions, and utility. |
| 1 feat | Cackle or Cauldron | Cackle improves Sustain turns. Cauldron improves daily item value. Pick Cackle if you expect sustained spells early; pick Cauldron if the campaign rewards preparation and consumables. |
| 2 | Basic Lesson | Lessons are how Witch expands both hexes and familiar spell access. Lesson of Life or Lesson of Elements are the cleanest early broad-value picks. |
| 3 | Build Occultism, Medicine, and one social or knowledge skill | Occultism supports your list, Medicine saves slots, and your Intelligence gives room for campaign skills. |
| 4 | Enhanced Familiar, Reach Spell, or Counterspell | Enhanced Familiar supports the class engine. Reach Spell protects your fragile body. Counterspell is better when enemy casters appear often. |
| 5 | Keep Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, and Intelligence on schedule | You need spell DCs, AC, HP, Reflex, and Perception. The patron did not gift you an excuse to ignore defense. |
| 6 | Greater Lesson | This is where you broaden the hex plan. Lesson of Dreams, Protection, Snow, or Shadow can all be correct depending on party and campaign. |
| 8 | Incredible Familiar or a table-specific caster feat | Take familiar power if positioning, scouting, or patron riders matter every session. Otherwise solve the repeated problem your GM actually uses. |
| 10 | Major Lesson or Quickened Casting | Major Lesson gives big hex and spell expansion. Quickened Casting is the emergency pace button for decisive turns. |
| 12 | Hex Focus or Coven Spell | Hex Focus is the default if you lean on focus magic. Coven Spell is better in a caster-heavy or Witch-heavy party. |
| 14 | Patron's Presence or Reflect Spell | Patron's Presence makes the familiar a real battlefield threat. Reflect Spell is strong only if Counterspell is already table-relevant. |
| 16 | Effortless Concentration | This is premium action economy for a caster with sustained spells. It is boring in exactly the way winning math is boring. |
| 18 | Split Hex or Patron's Claim | Split Hex supports offensive hex play. Patron's Claim is the dramatic familiar-centered option for burst, drain, and focus recovery. |
| 20 | Hex Master or Patron's Truth | Hex Master breaks the one-hex-per-turn limit and is the peak Witch identity. Patron's Truth is the clean extra top-rank spell slot. |
GM and Monster Notes
The Witch rewards a GM who gives clues before danger. Prepared casters care about scouting, Recall Knowledge, rumors, terrain, hazards, and enemy type. That does not mean spoiling the adventure. It means giving enough information that preparation is a game, not a coin flip.
Use encounter building, adjusting encounters, hazards, skill DCs, and social encounters to make Witch strengths visible without handing the player a script.
Monster Core matters because many Witch tools interact with traits, saves, senses, immunities, and conditions. A Resentment Witch wants enemies vulnerable to Will pressure and condition stacking. A Protection lesson Witch wants trait identification. An occult Witch can suffer into mindless or mental-resistant enemies. A primal Witch is happier when terrain and movement matter. Link table play to creature traits, stat blocks, and conditions.
For familiar handling, be explicit at session zero. Familiars can scout and position, but they are not a license to solo every map while the rest of the party waits. They can be threatened, but constantly sniping the familiar because the player used a class feature is not clever encounter design. Use consequences sparingly and visibly.
Final Verdict
Witch is one of the best remastered classes for players who enjoy preparation, table information, and small repeated advantages. The Resentment is the strongest default patron, Spinner of Threads is the cleanest support patron, The Inscribed One is the best arcane knowledge patron, and Faith's Flamekeeper is the simplest divine support build. Cobyslarni is the rare pick for an occult group that makes Recall Knowledge actionable and can protect its familiar. Silence in Snow, Wilding Steward, Starless Shadow, and Unseen Broker are all good when the campaign actually rewards their terrain, creature-type, darkness, or bargain themes.
The class is not the easiest caster in Player Core. It asks you to track a familiar, one hex per turn, prepared slots, patron riders, lessons, and tradition gaps. If that sounds like fun, Witch is excellent. If that sounds like unpaid homework, play Sorcerer or Bard and sleep peacefully.
