The short answer

Goblins are a nimble PF2e ancestry from Player Core with Dexterity and Charisma boosts, darkvision, 6 ancestry Hit Points, 25-foot Speed, and a Wisdom flaw. Choose Unbreakable, Charhide, Razortooth, Snow, or Irongut Goblin for the campaign, then use feats such as Very Sneaky, Goblin Song, Burn It!, Goblin Scuttle, and Junk Tinker to support a defined stealth, fire, movement, crafting, or debuff role.

Introduction

Three Goblin scouts disarm a trap in a flooded dungeon passage while watching the route ahead.

Goblins are small, fast, loud, hard to ignore, and much better mechanically than their reputation implies. Player Core gives them Dexterity, Charisma, darkvision, 25-foot Speed, and ancestry feats that support stealth, fire damage, movement, crafting, mounted play, and enemy debuffs.

The mistake is playing a goblin as a loose collection of bad decisions. PF2e goblins work best when the chaos has a job. A Rogue using Very Sneaky is not just "being goblin." A Bard using Goblin Song is making the enemy worse at Will saves. An Alchemist with Burn It! is converting the ancestry joke into damage math.

Rating Key

  • ● Excellent default choice.
  • ● Strong choice in many builds.
  • ● Good only for specific builds or campaigns.
  • ● Usually avoid unless the concept demands it.

Goblin Snapshot

TraitWhy It Matters
Dexterity, Charisma, free boost ●Great for scouts, faces, skirmishers, and Charisma classes.
6 ancestry HP ●Fragile unless you pick Unbreakable or invest in defense.
Small size ●Helps stealth and concept, but weapon and mount plans need thought.
25-foot Speed ●No speed penalty despite being Small.
Wisdom flaw ●Hurts Perception and Will saves, which are both common pressure points.
Darkvision ●Excellent exploration value from level 1.
Goblin feat list ●Real support for stealth, fire, crafting, movement, and debuffs.

Core Traits and Build Impact

Player Core goblins have Dexterity, Charisma, and a free boost, with a Wisdom flaw. That is a fantastic opening for Rogue, Swashbuckler, Thaumaturge, Bard, Sorcerer, Alchemist, Ranger, and Dexterity-forward martial builds.

The Wisdom flaw is the real cost. Lower Wisdom means weaker baseline Perception and Will, and PF2e attacks both of those constantly. A goblin can absolutely be brave. The sheet just wants you to pay attention when fear, enchantment, initiative, and hidden enemies enter the room.

GM Core describes goblins as scrappy, creative, and quick to bond with allies, while Monster Core leans into songs, fire, stealth, scavenging, and goblin war chanters. That gives you a clear table identity without flattening every goblin into a punchline.

Heritage Rankings

HeritageBest For
Unbreakable Goblin ●Any build that wants more durability
Charhide Goblin ●Fire spells, alchemy, fire hazards, reckless movement
Razortooth Goblin ●Unarmed, Cling, grappler-adjacent, backup weapon builds
Snow Goblin ●Cold campaigns and harsh-weather travel
Irongut Goblin ●Settlement survival, ingested hazards, gross problem-solving

Unbreakable Goblin ●

Unbreakable Goblin raises your ancestry HP from 6 to 10 and reduces falling damage by treating falls as shorter. That is boring in the way good brakes are boring. You may not celebrate it every session, but when the dice turn mean, it matters.

This is the best default heritage for Rogues, Alchemists, Bards, Sorcerers, and any build that expects to be close enough to trouble to smell it.

Charhide Goblin ●

Charhide Goblin gives scaling fire resistance and makes persistent fire easier to end. If you are building around alchemical items, fire spells, Burn It!, or scenes where fire is a recurring tactical tool, this is excellent.

The important phrase is "recurring tactical tool." If fire is just flavor, Charhide is fine. If fire appears in your actions, hazards, enemies, and party plans, Charhide becomes a serious build piece.

Razortooth Goblin ●

Razortooth Goblin gives a finesse jaws unarmed attack. That matters for characters who want a backup attack that does not require drawing a weapon, for Dexterity builds that like having an unarmed option, and for later Cling plans that care about jaws or similar unarmed attacks.

It is strongest on Rogues, Swashbucklers, Monks, and oddball Barbarians who want the visual. It is weaker if you never intend to be in melee.

Snow Goblin ●

Snow Goblin gives cold resistance and reduces the severity of environmental cold effects. In a cold campaign, that can be a Blue pick. In a normal mixed-terrain campaign, it is a respectable defensive niche but less broadly useful than Unbreakable or Charhide.

Use it for wilderness games, mountain travel, arctic regions, and parties that expect the GM to care about environmental pressure.

Irongut Goblin ●

Irongut Goblin is funny, but the mechanics are more specific than the joke. It supports eating unsafe things, settlement scavenging, and resisting ingested afflictions or sickened effects. With City Scavenger, the numbers improve.

Take it if your campaign uses survival, settlements, poisons, spoiled food, trash economies, or social scenes where your goblin's standards are a competitive advantage. Skip it if you wanted general durability.

Ancestry Feat Rankings

Level 1 Feats

FeatBest Users
Very Sneaky ●Scouts, Rogues, Rangers, Swashbucklers
Goblin Song ●Bards, debuffers, Charisma support builds
Burn It! ●Fire casters and Alchemists
Goblin Scuttle ●Team movement and melee skirmishers
Junk Tinker ●Crafting and resourceful campaigns
Goblin Lore ●Skill coverage and Stealth/Nature access
Rough Rider ●Mounted goblin builds
City Scavenger ●Downtime and settlement survival
Goblin Weapon Familiarity ●Specific goblin weapon builds

Very Sneaky. This is one of the best level 1 goblin feats because it directly improves Stealth. Moving farther while Sneaking matters in exploration and encounter play, and it sets up Very, Very Sneaky later.

Goblin Song. A Performance-based action that penalizes enemy Perception and Will saves is useful. It supports Bards, Sorcerers, Psychics, and any party that attacks Will. The joke is loud; the math is quiet.

Burn It! Fire spells and alchemical items get extra fire damage, and persistent fire improves too. This is the obvious pick for Alchemists, fire Sorcerers, fire-focused spell guides, and anyone who regularly uses bombs or fire effects.

Goblin Scuttle. Reaction movement when an ally moves adjacent to you can fix positioning without spending your own turn's actions. It gets better when the party actually coordinates.

Junk Tinker. This is better in campaigns that respect Crafting, scarcity, field repairs, or messy improvisation. If your group handwaves gear and downtime, it drops.

Goblin Lore. Nature, Stealth, and Goblin Lore are a clean package. It is not flashy, but it saves skill pressure and supports scouting.

Rough Rider. Mounted goblin is a real plan if your table supports mounts and companion rules. Read companions and familiars before committing.

City Scavenger. Good in urban downtime games and better with Irongut. It is not a combat feat, so do not take it if the campaign never makes Subsist or Earn Income matter.

Goblin Weapon Familiarity. Worth it only if the specific uncommon goblin weapons are part of the build. Otherwise, Very Sneaky, Goblin Song, Burn It!, or Goblin Scuttle usually affect more sessions.

Level 5 Feats

FeatBest Users
Loud Singer ●Goblin Song builds
Kneecap ●Melee skirmishers
Vandal ●Trap, object, and sabotage campaigns

Loud Singer. If Goblin Song is your thing, increasing range and adding another target is good. If Goblin Song is not your thing, this does nothing. Simple.

Kneecap. Speed penalties can be strong when they deny enemy positioning, retreat, or melee access. The limitation is that it takes a melee Strike that does no damage. It works best when slowing the enemy is better than hitting them.

Vandal. Thievery training plus better object and trap smashing can matter in dungeon, heist, and sabotage campaigns. In a normal combat-only read, it is narrower.

Level 9 Feats

FeatBest Users
Skittering Scuttle ●Goblin Scuttle builds
Cave Climber ●Exploration, caves, vertical maps
Cling ●Razortooth or melee pest builds

Skittering Scuttle. Upgrading Goblin Scuttle from Step to a half-Speed Stride is a major mobility improvement. This is great in parties where allies are frequently moving near you.

Cave Climber. A climb Speed is campaign-dependent but valuable when it matters. It pairs well with movement actions, cave maps, rooftops, ships, and dungeons with real verticality.

Cling. This is strange and table-facing, but it has tactical use. If you can land a Strike and have a free hand, or a qualifying jaws attack, you can hitch onto a foe and force them to deal with you. It is not a default plan, but Razortooth builds should look at it.

Level 13 and 17 Feats

FeatBest Users
Very, Very Sneaky ●Dedicated stealth builds
Reckless Abandon ●High-risk late-game characters

Very, Very Sneaky. This is the payoff for taking Very Sneaky. Moving your full Speed while Sneaking and loosening Hide/Sneak requirements is a major upgrade for dedicated stealth characters.

Reckless Abandon. Once per day, this turns a dangerous self-inflicted turn into a much safer one by improving bad saves and minimizing damage from enemies or hazards during that turn. It is not a license to be foolish all campaign. It is a license to choose one outrageous line of play and have the ancestry say, "Fine, but only once."

Best Classes for Goblins

ClassWhy It Works
Rogue ●Dexterity, darkvision, Stealth, mobility, and Very Sneaky all align.
Alchemist ●Burn It!, Charhide, bombs, Crafting, and weird tools fit perfectly.
Swashbuckler ●Dexterity, Charisma, mobility, and style all work.
Thaumaturge ●Charisma, odd tools, Goblin Lore, and darkvision support the role.
Bard ●Charisma plus Goblin Song is real debuff support.
Sorcerer ●Charisma casting and fire options can work well.
Ranger ●Dexterity, darkvision, scouting, and mount options fit.
Barbarian ●Fun and durable with the right plan, but not the cleanest stat fit.
Inventor ●Junk Tinker flavor is strong, but Intelligence needs investment.

Rogue ●

Rogue is the cleanest goblin class. Dexterity, darkvision, Very Sneaky, Chameleon-style tactics through skills, and small-size scouting all support the same job: find the angle, use it, and leave before the enemy writes a policy about you.

Start with the Rogue feat guide, Stealth guide, and stealth in combat guide.

Alchemist ●

Goblin Alchemist is not just on-theme. It has mechanical support. Charhide Goblin plus Burn It! gives fire resistance and extra fire value, while Junk Tinker and Crafting support the scavenger-inventor angle.

Use the Alchemist feat guide, alchemical items guide, and equipment guide when planning the daily kit.

Bard ●

Goblin Song and Performance make Bard a serious pick. Monster Core's goblin war chanter material supports the idea that goblin noise can be battlefield pressure, not just background irritation.

Use the Bard feat guide, Bard spell guide, and Performance guide. If the party targets Will saves often, Goblin Song gets better.

Swashbuckler and Thaumaturge ●

Swashbuckler likes Dexterity, Charisma, mobility, and audacity. Thaumaturge likes Charisma, strange tools, knowledge, and table texture. Goblin supports both, especially if you choose feats that help positioning or skill play.

Use the Swashbuckler guide, Thaumaturge guide, Acrobatics, Deception, and Intimidation.

Ranger and Barbarian

Ranger gets practical scouting tools from darkvision, Stealth, and possible mounted options. Barbarian can be hilarious and effective, especially with Unbreakable or Razortooth, but it needs more planning because goblin attributes do not naturally push Strength.

Use the Ranger feat guide, Barbarian feat guide, weapons guide, and armor guide.

Skills, Backgrounds, and Attribute Plans

Build GoalAttributesSkillsNotes
Sneaky RogueDexterity, Charisma, ConstitutionStealth, Thievery, DeceptionThe default goblin power lane.
Fire AlchemistDexterity, Intelligence, ConstitutionCrafting, Stealth, SocietyCharhide and Burn It! do work.
War Chanter BardCharisma, Dexterity, ConstitutionPerformance, Occultism, DiplomacyGoblin Song becomes a real support action.
Mounted RangerDexterity, Wisdom, ConstitutionNature, Survival, StealthRough Rider is the hook.
Razortooth PestDexterity, Constitution, CharismaAcrobatics, Athletics, IntimidationJaws plus Cling creates a nuisance build.

Because of the Wisdom flaw, do not ignore Will saves and initiative. If your class already has low Will, compensate with class choices, skill tactics, party support, or defensive gear.

Spell and Equipment Notes

Goblin spell and item choices should be practical. Fire is the obvious route, but do not take every fire option just because the ancestry smiles at it. PF2e rewards coverage. If the enemy resists fire, the fire goblin still needs a plan.

BuildEquipment Priorities
Fire AlchemistAlchemical items, fire bombs, backup damage types, tools
Rogue scoutAdventuring gear, thieves' tools, backup ranged weapon
Bard supportInstrument or performance tools, scrolls, light armor, utility consumables
Mounted goblinMount rules, Nature investment, companions and familiars
Weapon goblinWeapons, runes, finesse options

For spell planning, start with cantrips, arcane spells, occult spells, and class-specific lists like Bard spells or Sorcerer spells.

Sample Builds

Knife-Smile Scout

Class: Rogue

Heritage: Unbreakable Goblin or Razortooth Goblin

Skills: Stealth, Thievery, Deception

Early feats: Very Sneaky, Goblin Scuttle

Later feats: Skittering Scuttle, Very, Very Sneaky

This is the classic goblin scout: hard to see, hard to pin down, and very interested in whether the enemy left anything important unattended.

Charhide Fire Rat

Class: Alchemist or Sorcerer

Heritage: Charhide Goblin

Skills: Crafting, Stealth, Arcana or Society

Early feats: Burn It!, Junk Tinker

Later feats: Reckless Abandon

This build uses fire as a controlled tool. The key word is controlled. You are building a tactical problem-solver, not a walking insurance claim.

Battlefield War Chanter

Class: Bard

Heritage: Unbreakable Goblin or Irongut Goblin

Skills: Performance, Occultism, Diplomacy

Early feats: Goblin Song

Later feats: Loud Singer, Goblin Scuttle

This build turns goblin performance into party support. Lowering Will saves matters when the party's casters are ready to punish the opening.

Mounted Scrap-Rider

Class: Ranger

Heritage: Unbreakable Goblin or Snow Goblin

Skills: Nature, Survival, Stealth

Early feats: Rough Rider, Goblin Lore

Later feats: Cave Climber or Skittering Scuttle

This is for players who want the old goblin mount image but still want functional exploration and combat choices.

GM Notes

Goblin PCs need a tone agreement. Player Core and GM Core both support goblins as creative, bonded, impulsive, song-heavy, and fire-fascinated. Monster Core shows more dangerous goblin creatures, including warriors, commandos, pyros, war chanters, and goblin dogs. That material is useful for NPCs and context, but a player goblin does not need to reproduce every worst habit of hostile goblin bands.

Good goblin hooks:

  • A former warren becomes a settlement trying to earn trust.
  • A goblin song contains a real historical clue, even if nobody wants to admit it.
  • A scavenged object is actually a magic item, relic component, or stolen evidence.
  • A fire-obsessed goblin learns restraint because the party keeps needing buildings intact.
  • A goblin dog story turns into a companion, hazard, or social complication.

Use session zero if the player wants slapstick, arson humor, gross-out survival, or social prejudice to be recurring themes. Those can work, but only when the table agrees on the boundary.

Hot Take

Hot Take: Goblin is a tempo ancestry, not a comedy ancestry. The strongest builds use Speed, stealth, song, fire, or odd-angle movement to make the enemy's turn worse. Burn It! is good, but a fire goblin still needs a plan for fire-resistant enemies and scenes where the building must remain standing.

Final Verdict

Goblin is a strong ancestry overall and especially good for stealth, fire, Performance debuffs, and Charisma skirmisher builds. Darkvision, Dexterity, Charisma, and a great feat list give it more mechanical substance than many players expect.

The best goblin is not random. The best goblin is decisive, strange, hard to catch, and very clear about which bad idea is actually the correct tactical line.
