Introduction
Bard feats are not about making the Bard look busy. They are about making the party better while keeping the Bard's own turn from collapsing under too many attractive buttons. The class already wants to use a composition, cast occult spells, move, identify enemies, Demoralize, heal with soothe, and occasionally activate an item. A feat that asks for another action has to earn it.
This guide uses the Player Core Bard as the baseline, plus Player Core skills and spells, Player Core 2 option context, GM Core encounter and social assumptions, and Monster Core matchup pressure. It summarizes feat value in practical review style and does not reproduce full feat or spell text.

Rating Legend
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Excellent default or build-defining pick |
| ● | Strong when the build supports it |
| ● | Campaign-specific, narrow, or action-hungry |
| ● | Usually worse than a simpler option |
Prerequisite Warnings
Bard feat prerequisites are mostly muse, composition, focus, spellcasting, and skill-investment checks. Verify every named Bard feat against Player Core before committing to a chain. A feat can be highly rated and still be wrong if your muse, Performance rank, spell repertoire, action loop, or campaign scene mix does not support it.
| Warning | Why it matters | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Muse assumptions | Maestro, Enigma, Polymath, and Warrior each push different feat lines. A feat written for one muse may be much worse on another Bard. | Start with the Bard class guide, then choose the feat line that reinforces your muse. |
| Composition action cost | Many excellent Bard feats still compete with composition, spellcasting, movement, Recall Knowledge, Demoralize, and item actions. | Use the three-action economy and action compression guides before adding another active button. |
| Performance and skill gates | Fortissimo, social compression, Recall Knowledge, and face play need real skill investment, not just Bard vibes. | Pair feats with Performance, Occultism, Lore, Diplomacy, Deception, and skill feats. |
| Spell repertoire limits | Spell-flexibility feats are strongest when your actual repertoire has useful occult answers. Bad spell choices make good feat text look worse. | Cross-check Bard spells, occult spells, focus spells, and utility spells. |
| Trait and immunity pressure | Auditory, mental, emotion, fear, linguistic, and visual tools can run into Monster Core traits or encounter conditions. | Compare the plan against creature traits, conditions, and GM encounter guidance. |
| Warrior Bard gear requirements | Martial Bard feats need weapon access, runes, defenses, and party positioning to justify the feat slot. | Check weapons, runes, armor, and flanking. |
| Sourcebook limits | This guide is Player Core-first. Add options from other books only when that source is available and allowed at the table. | Keep source-limited rankings source-limited until the relevant book is available. |
Bard feat prerequisites are not paperwork. They are the difference between party-wide math and a very confident waste of an action.
Fast Recommendations
| Bard plan | Best feat direction | Best support links |
|---|---|---|
| Maestro support | Lingering Composition, Fortissimo Composition, Harmonize, Eternal Composition | Bard spells, Performance, focus spells |
| Enigma knowledge Bard | Bardic Lore support, Recall Knowledge reliability, lore expansion | Occultism, Lore, monster traits |
| Polymath face | Versatile Performance, Esoteric Polymath, social compression | Diplomacy, Deception, social encounters |
| Warrior Bard | Martial Performance, Courageous Advance, Defensive Coordination, Courageous Assault | Reactions, weapons, three-action economy |
| Occult controller | Composition uptime, fear support, spell-flexibility feats | Occult spells, combat spells, conditions |
Hot Take: Lingering Composition is an action-economy feat before it is a performance feat. Keeping a composition active lets a Bard spend later turns on the party's actual problem.

Level 1-4 Feat Priorities
| Feat or feat family | Who should take it |
|---|---|
| Lingering Composition ● | Maestro Bards get the cleanest start because this saves actions across multiple rounds. If you can keep Courageous Anthem or another composition running longer, the party wins tempo. |
| Versatile Performance ● | Polymath and face Bards who want Performance to cover common social jobs. Excellent in campaigns with actual NPC scenes. |
| Bardic Lore-style knowledge support ● | Enigma Bards and parties without broad Recall Knowledge coverage. This gets better when the GM makes enemy traits and weaknesses actionable. |
| Warrior starting feats ● | Warrior Bards who want to support martial tempo. Good, but remember you are a Bard first and a weapon user second. |
| Extra active composition options ● | Strong when the composition solves a repeated problem. Weaker when it just gives you another one-action temptation. |
| Narrow performance tricks ● | Fun at social tables, weak in campaigns that treat performance as wallpaper. Ask what the campaign rewards before spending the feat. |
Level 6-10 Feat Priorities
| Feat or feat family | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Fortissimo Composition ● | Maestro's big support spike. Performance investment turns into serious party math at exactly the moment an ally wants a decisive attack. |
| Dirge of Doom access and fear support ● | Fear pressure is excellent because frightened affects attacks, AC, saves, and DCs. Pair with Intimidation and martial allies. |
| Harmonize-style composition layering ● | Strong for Bards who understand action timing. It is less useful if the party does not need more than one composition effect. |
| Esoteric Polymath-style repertoire flexibility ● | Polymath Bards can reduce spontaneous-caster regret by adding a spellbook-like planning layer. Great for players who prep between sessions. |
| Knowledge escalation ● | Enigma gets better when Recall Knowledge answers drive target selection, save targeting, and resistance planning. |
| Warrior tempo feats ● | Feats that move allies, improve reaction use, or coordinate Strikes are good when the party has strong martial allies. |
| Counter-performance tools ● | Excellent against auditory and visual threats, less exciting when the GM rarely uses them. |
This tier is where Bard players need discipline. The class can collect many useful-looking abilities, but only three actions fit in a round. Use the action compression feats and three-action economy guides when comparing feat value.
Level 12-20 Feat Priorities
| Feat or feat family | Best use |
|---|---|
| Eternal Composition ● | High-level Maestro payoff. Repeatable support that asks less from your turn is exactly what Bard wants. |
| Soothing Ballad-style healing support ● | Strong when the party needs in-combat recovery that does not consume the entire healer identity. |
| Allegro-style speed and tempo support ● | Speed and action tempo become more valuable as maps, monsters, and objectives get more complicated. |
| Courageous Assault and Warrior chain upgrades ● | Best in parties with Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Champion, Barbarian, or other allies who can exploit extra martial tempo. |
| Advanced Polymath flexibility ● | Great for campaigns with varied problems and downtime planning. Less flashy in linear combat gauntlets. |
| Fatal Aria-style capstone offense ● | Dramatic and valid, but late and narrow. Do not spend twenty levels pretending Bard is mainly an execution button. |
Muse-Specific Feat Plans
| Muse | Feat plan |
|---|---|
| Maestro | Take composition uptime and composition spike feats first. Lingering Composition, Fortissimo Composition, Harmonize, Soothing Ballad, and Eternal Composition all support the Bard's strongest job: improving party math without spending every action. |
| Enigma | Take feats that make Recall Knowledge reliable, broad, and combat-useful. Pair with Occultism, Lore, Society, Arcana, Nature, and Religion. |
| Polymath | Take social compression and spell-flexibility feats. Versatile Performance and Esoteric Polymath-style choices are best when the campaign includes social scenes, downtime, and varied adventuring problems. |
| Warrior | Take martial coordination, ally movement, defensive coordination, and reaction-enabling feats. Keep spellcasting and compositions central or you become a worse martial with better stage presence. |
Composition Feat Rankings
| Composition direction | Practical value |
|---|---|
| Courageous Anthem support ● | The default math engine. Feats that keep it active, improve it, or help you use it alongside other actions are premium. |
| Rallying Anthem support ● | Strong when the party is getting hit often or needs defensive posture. Better in difficult encounters than easy ones. |
| Dirge of Doom support ● | Excellent with fear stacking, martial accuracy, and enemy save pressure. Watch immunity and range. |
| Song of Strength and Warrior support ● | Strong with Athletics allies, maneuvers, and parties that exploit forced movement and reactions. |
| Triple Time and mobility support ● | Map size is an encounter feature. Speed support looks modest until the objective is not standing politely beside you. |
| Niche composition tricks ● | Take them when the table repeatedly rewards the scene they answer. Otherwise, they become very stylish luggage. |
Skill Feats That Matter
| Skill lane | Bard value |
|---|---|
| Performance ● | Composition identity, social presence, muse support, and several Bard feat paths. Treat it like a real class skill, not tavern garnish. |
| Diplomacy ● | Essential for face Bards and GM Core social play. |
| Deception ● | Strong for Polymath, intrigue, disguise, and social misdirection. |
| Intimidation ● | Demoralize stacks beautifully with Dirge of Doom, martial allies, and Will pressure. |
| Occultism ● | Your tradition skill and a major Recall Knowledge lane. |
| Lore ● | Enigma and campaign-specific Bards can turn lore into real encounter information. |
| Medicine ● | Bard can heal with soothe, but Medicine keeps resource pressure down between fights. |
Use skill feats, general feats, and ancestry feats to support your Bard identity without spending class feats on problems another slot solves.
Spell And Feat Pairings
| Spell lane | Feat support |
|---|---|
| Soothe and recovery | Composition uptime lets you heal without giving up party support every round. Signature spell planning matters. |
| Occult control | Fear, mental pressure, illusions, and Will-targeting spells pair with Dirge of Doom, Recall Knowledge, and martial allies. |
| Cantrips | Feats that save actions make cantrip turns less painful when slots are not worth spending. |
| Focus spells | Muse feat paths often change how much focus pressure your build can support. |
| Utility spells | Polymath and Enigma builds get more value when the campaign rewards information, infiltration, languages, and downtime. |
Bard spell feats are only as good as the repertoire behind them. A feat that creates flexibility is valuable because spontaneous casters pay for bad spell choices longer than prepared casters do.
Equipment Pairings
| Equipment | Bard feat impact |
|---|---|
| Staves and wands | Expand daily spell access without bloating the repertoire. Excellent for utility, healing, and repeated support magic. |
| Consumables | Scrolls, talismans, elixirs, and situational answers keep class feats focused on core Bard play. |
| Worn invested items | Performance, Charisma, saves, defenses, and skill support all matter. |
| Armor | Light armor and defensive runes keep the Bard alive without pretending the class is a Champion. |
| Weapons | Warrior Bards care most, but every Bard benefits from a functional ranged backup. |
| Magic items by level | GM Core treasure expectations determine whether your feat plan gets enough item support to stay flexible. |
Monster Core And GM Core Pressure
Monster Core makes Bard feat choices more interesting because not every creature cares about the same effects. Mindless enemies, mental immunity, special senses, fear resistance, language barriers, and high Will saves all affect Bard value.
| Repeated table problem | Bard answer |
|---|---|
| Mindless or mental-immune enemies | Shift from mental control to Courageous Anthem, Rallying Anthem, buffs, healing, movement, and item support. |
| High-Will enemies | Use Recall Knowledge, target different saves through party support, or focus on ally buffs instead of enemy debuffs. |
| Spread-out battlefields | Lingering Composition, movement support, positioning, and range awareness matter more. |
| Social campaigns | Polymath, Performance, Diplomacy, Deception, and social encounters rise sharply. |
| Mystery campaigns | Enigma, Occultism, Lore, subsystems, and knowledge feats get better. |
| Severe combat pressure | Maestro support, recovery, defensive compositions, and clean action economy beat cute tricks. |
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Taking every active button | Prefer passive support, longer composition uptime, or action compression unless the new action is clearly better than your current turn. |
| Ignoring muse prerequisites | Build around the muse you actually chose, not the feat chain you wish you had qualified for. |
| Ignoring Performance | Even if the campaign is not about concerts, Bard mechanics care about Performance. Invest in the skill. |
| Building only for social scenes | Keep combat support real. Even intrigue campaigns eventually contain someone with a knife and a schedule. |
| Building only for combat | Bard is one of the best classes for social, knowledge, and exploration value. Do not throw that away for one more mediocre Strike. |
| Forgetting immunity | Occult and fear tools are excellent until they are illegal targets. Carry backup buffs, healing, and item answers. |
Party Pairings
Bard loves parties with allies who make many meaningful attacks or big single attacks. Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, Ranger, Champion, and Monk all turn Bard bonuses into visible results. Wizard, Cleric, Druid, and Witch appreciate Recall Knowledge, save targeting, healing backup, and defensive compositions.
