Nature is the Wisdom skill for animals, plants, weather, geography, natural-origin creatures, primal magic, the First World, and the Elemental Planes. It is the skill that says, "That vine is moving wrong," "This storm is not natural," and "Please stop trying to negotiate with the mule like it has a retirement plan."
Nature overlaps with Survival, but they are not the same. Nature explains the wild. Survival gets you through it.

What Nature Actually Does
Player Core gives Nature one broad untrained knowledge use and two trained magical uses.
| Action | Requirement | Practical Job |
|---|---|---|
| Recall Knowledge ● | Can be attempted untrained | Understand natural creatures, flora, fauna, geography, weather, the environment, the First World, and Elemental Planes |
| Command an Animal ● | Nature check against the animal's Will DC | Issue simple orders to an animal |
| Identify Magic ● | Trained Nature | Identify primal magic, items, effects, or magical locations |
| Learn a Spell ● | Trained Nature | Learn a spell from the primal tradition |
Hot take: Nature is not "Survival but with leaves." If the question is "what is this monster, plant, storm, or primal magic?" Nature is probably the first skill you reach for.
Command An Animal
Command an Animal is a one-action auditory and concentrate action. You attempt a Nature check against the animal's Will DC. The GM can adjust the DC if the animal likes you, if the order matches what it already wants to do, or if you offer something useful like a treat.
| Situation | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Helpful animal ● | Increase the degree of success by one step |
| Friendly animal ● | Usually a good candidate for normal commands |
| Unfriendly or hostile animal ● | You automatically fail |
| Mounted animal with Ride ● | Ride makes mounted move commands automatically succeed |
| Complex tactical command ● | Animals understand simple instructions, not perfect battle plans |
Most animals know basic actions like Drop Prone, Leap, Seek, Stand, Stride, and Strike. If you command an activity with multiple actions, you spend the same number of actions on Command an Animal. You can also spend multiple actions commanding multiple basic actions for the animal's next turn.
Best Nature Feats
| Feat | Why |
|---|---|
| Natural Medicine ● | Lets Nature handle Treat Wounds, including higher DC options based on Nature proficiency |
| Train Animal ● | Teaches animals basic actions or new basic actions during downtime |
| Bonded Animal ● | Creates a long-term bond with a normal animal after downtime and a Nature check |
| Ride ● | Makes mounted move commands automatic and clarifies mount timing |
| Express Rider ● | Player Core 2 travel feat that can increase mounted travel Speed for the group |
| Trick Magic Item ● | Nature can trick primal magic items, but this is build- and loot-dependent |
Use the best skill feats guide for broader rankings.
Natural Medicine
Natural Medicine is good, but read the limits. It lets you use Nature instead of Medicine to Treat Wounds, including higher DCs as your Nature proficiency rises. It does not replace Medicine for Administer First Aid, Treat Disease, Treat Poison, Battle Medicine prerequisites, Medic prerequisites, or other Medicine feat prerequisites.
| Build | Why |
|---|---|
| Druid healer ● | Wisdom, Nature, and primal identity all line up |
| Ranger wilderness medic ● | Good if the party needs field recovery without full Medicine investment |
| Herbalist build ● | Player Core 2 Herbalist uses Nature, Natural Medicine, and healing alchemy together |
| Party's only healer ● | Works for Treat Wounds, but Medicine still covers important emergency and affliction tools |
Player Core notes that wilderness access to fresh ingredients can give a circumstance bonus to Natural Medicine at the GM's discretion. Player Core 2's Herbalist improves that theme by turning natural remedies into daily healing consumables.
Player Core 2 Nature Support
Player Core 2 adds more reasons for Nature to matter through mounted travel, animal-facing archetypes, herbal remedies, and ancestry options that care about wilderness or nonhuman bodies.
| Option | Why |
|---|---|
| Herbalist ● | Uses trained Nature and Natural Medicine to create healing herbal items with advanced alchemy |
| Express Rider ● | Uses Nature to improve mounted travel Speed for the group |
| Beastmaster and animal builds ● | Nature supports animal handling, training, and table rulings around creature behavior |
| Cavalier and mount play ● | Mounted travel and Command an Animal rules become central |
| Lizardfolk, tengu, tripkee, and wild ancestry themes ● | Good when the campaign gives natural environments and creatures real screen time |
Best Characters For Nature
| Character | Why |
|---|---|
| Druid ● | Wisdom, primal magic, animals, plants, and natural Recall Knowledge are the class's home turf |
| Ranger ● | Wisdom, wilderness identity, animal companions, and monster knowledge all support Nature |
| Animist ● | Wisdom caster with spiritual and natural themes depending on apparition and spell choices |
| Witch ● | Primal patron builds care about Nature for Identify Magic and Learn a Spell |
| Sorcerer ● | Primal bloodlines benefit from Nature even if Charisma is the casting attribute |
| Cleric ● | Strong Wisdom, but Nature is usually secondary unless deity, domain, or campaign theme pushes it |
Nature Versus Similar Skills
| Question | Use This |
|---|---|
| What kind of animal, plant, fey, weather pattern, or primal phenomenon is this? ● | Nature |
| Can we find tracks, navigate, subsist, or cover our trail? ● | Survival |
| Can we Treat Wounds, stop bleeding, or handle poison and disease directly? ● | Medicine |
| Is this spell arcane, divine, occult, or primal? ● | Arcana, Nature, Occultism, or Religion, depending on tradition |
| Is this a specific local beast, sacred grove, or old druid circle? ● | Lore, if the Lore is narrower and directly applicable |
GM Advice
GM Core gives useful Nature-facing guidance even when it is not labeled "Nature." Animal DCs can use the animal's level as a baseline, with adjustments for domestication or trick difficulty. Wilderness scenes should make environment, weather, terrain, and creature adaptation matter.
| GM Situation | Practical Ruling |
|---|---|
| Animal command in combat ● | Keep commands simple and resolve them on the animal's next turn |
| Training an animal ● | Use the animal's level as a baseline, then adjust for trick difficulty and domestication |
| Natural creature identification ● | Use level-based DCs for creatures and adjust for rarity or notoriety |
| Wilderness travel ● | Let Nature explain signs and dangers while Survival handles routes and subsistence |
| Primal hazards or druidic magic ● | Nature is a natural fit for Identify Magic and Recall Knowledge |
Use GM skill check DCs, checks and DCs, encounter building, and creature traits to keep rulings consistent.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Treating Nature and Survival as identical ● | Nature understands the natural world; Survival travels through it |
| Forgetting hostile animals cannot be Commanded normally ● | Change the animal's attitude first or use another approach |
| Letting Natural Medicine replace all Medicine ● | It only replaces Medicine for Treat Wounds |
| Making animals understand tactics like soldiers ● | Keep commands simple unless a feature says otherwise |
| Ignoring primal magic identification ● | Nature is the primal Identify Magic and Learn a Spell skill |
| Treating wilderness as scenery only ● | Weather, terrain, animals, and natural signs should create choices |
Hot Takes
Nature is secretly two skills stapled together: primal scholar and animal handler. That is fine. The stapler is load-bearing.
Natural Medicine is excellent as a secondary healing plan, but it is not a full substitute for a trained Medicine character.
Command an Animal is strongest when the table respects animal intelligence. If your horse understands a six-step tactical pincer maneuver, that is not Nature. That is a horse with a law degree.
Rangers who skip both Nature and Survival are making a statement. It may not be a good statement, but it is definitely a statement.
If the campaign has primal magic, fey, elementals, beasts, plants, or dangerous weather, Nature should get rolled more than once every six sessions.
