Introduction
Occultism is PF2e's skill for the part of magic that keeps showing up in journals written by people who were absolutely fine two pages ago. It covers occult lore, supernatural creatures, impossible philosophies, strange writings, occult magic, and the pattern underneath things that do not behave like normal arcane theory or divine doctrine.
Use this with the PF2e skills guide, occult spell guide, rituals guide, Dark Archive guide, and GM skill DC guide.

Occultism At A Glance
| Occultism Use | Best Fit | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Occult Recall Knowledge ● | Strange creatures, esoteric planes, occult mysteries, suspicious rituals, and haunted evidence | Ask for answers that change what the party does next. "It is weird" is not enough. |
| Identify Magic ● | Occult auras, items, ongoing effects, locations, and spell traditions | This is trained-only and often uses DCs based on the effect, spell rank, item level, or rarity. |
| Learn A Spell ● | Bards, Psychics, Witches, occult Sorcerers, and other occult spell users | It matters most when your build actually adds spells from written or taught sources. |
| Decipher Writing ● | Strange cult texts, metaphysical systems, incoherent prophecies, and occult diagrams | Use Society for ordinary documents and institutions. |
| Ritual Support ● | Occult rituals, planar oddities, strange haunts, and Dark Archive style scenes | Rituals are table procedures, not free plot coupons. Track time, components, rank, and consequences. |
| Generic Secret Society Work ● | Mystery cults and esoteric lodges when you have the right feat support | Ordinary politics, etiquette, and criminal rumors usually belong to Society, Diplomacy, Deception, or Lore. |

What Occultism Does
Player Core gives Occultism a tight identity: ancient philosophies, esoteric lore, obscure mysticism, supernatural creatures, and occult magic. It is not "anything spooky." It is the knowledge skill for the occult tradition and the kind of supernatural logic that does not fit cleanly inside academic arcana or organized religion.
| Action Or Job | Training | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recall Knowledge ● | Untrained allowed | Covers ancient mysteries, obscure philosophies, occult creatures such as aberrations, spirits, and oozes, plus esoteric planes. |
| Decipher Writing ● | Trained | Handles occult texts, complex metaphysical systems, syncretic principles, and similar writings. |
| Identify Magic ● | Trained | Identifies magic, especially occult magic, and helps the party decide whether to touch the thing. Sometimes the answer should be "please do not touch the thing." |
| Learn A Spell ● | Trained | Lets occult casters add occult spells through the Learn a Spell activity when the source and access are available. |
| Trick Magic Item ● | Feat | Lets a trained character attempt to activate occult items they could not normally use. |
Best Occultism Skill Feats
| Feat | Best Fit | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Recognize Spell ● | Occult casters, investigators, and anyone often fighting spellcasters | A reaction that can tell you what is being cast and can improve your defense on a critical success. Very real table value. |
| Quick Identification ● | Magic-heavy campaigns, dungeon crawls, occult item campaigns | Reduces Identify Magic from 10 minutes to 1 minute, then gets faster at master and legendary. Great when the party finds weird magic constantly. |
| Schooled In Secrets ● | Cult investigations, secret societies, lodges, mystery games | Lets Occultism replace Diplomacy for Gather Information about secret groups and Deception to Impersonate a member. Narrow, but excellent when it applies. |
| Root Magic ● | Haunt-heavy games, support characters, defensive occultists | Player Core 2 lets you prepare a daily ward for an ally against a spell or haunt. It is not flashy; it just saves someone from a bad minute. |
| Break Curse ● | Master Occultism or Religion characters in curse-heavy campaigns | Gives the party a skill-based curse answer. Not a replacement for every magical solution, but valuable when curses are part of the campaign texture. |
| Trick Magic Item ● | High-Int noncasters, skill experts, scroll users, item-heavy parties | Occultism can unlock occult scrolls, wands, and items for characters who otherwise could not activate them. |
| Bizarre Magic ● | Spellcasters who want their magic harder to read | Increasing DCs to Recognize your spells and Identify your magic is flavorful and occasionally nasty, but it needs the right table to matter often. |
| Automatic Knowledge ● | Expert Occultism characters with Assurance | Free-action Recall Knowledge sounds incredible, but Assurance can lag behind hard DCs. Better for common facts than boss monster secrets. |
| Dubious Knowledge ● | Players who enjoy partial truths and GM mind games | Fun, but you must be comfortable acting on one useful fact and one misleading one. The GM is now legally allowed to smile too much. |
Occultism Vs Similar Skills
Occultism overlaps with other knowledge skills, so the table should draw borders early.
| If The Question Is About... | Use This | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Arcane formulas, spell theory, golems, constructs, and arcane magic | Arcana ● | Arcana is the formal study of arcane magic and magical theory. |
| Wild magic, animals, plants, beasts, weather, and primal magic | Nature ● | Nature is the primal and ecological skill. |
| Deities, faiths, divine magic, undead, fiends, and sacred doctrine | Religion ● | Religion is the divine tradition and theology skill. |
| Cult logistics, city rumors, laws, institutions, and historical customs | Society ● | Society handles mundane civilization even when the people are wearing alarming robes. |
| A narrow topic like one city cult, one ghost story, one ritual site, or one monster family | Lore ● | Specific Lore can beat broad skills when the question is narrow enough. |
| Aberrations, spirits, oozes, esoteric planes, occult magic, and weird metaphysics | Occultism ● | This is Occultism's lane. Let it be strange, but make it useful. |
Best Characters For Occultism
| Character | Why |
|---|---|
| Bard ● | Occult spellcasting, strong social presence, and broad knowledge play make Bard one of the best Occultism users in the game. |
| Psychic ● | Dark Archive makes Psychic one of the cleanest fits for mind, emotion, strange magic, and occult spell identification. |
| Thaumaturge ● | Thaumaturge already lives in the world of symbols, weaknesses, curses, relics, and "I know a guy who survived this once." Occultism fits perfectly. |
| Witch ● | Occult patrons and familiar-based play can make Occultism a strong identity skill, especially with rituals and strange magic. |
| Sorcerer ● | Occult bloodlines, including Player Core 2 options, can make Occultism the natural tradition skill. |
| Investigator ● | Intelligence, clue play, and Recall Knowledge make Occultism valuable in mystery-heavy campaigns. |
| Oracle ● | Oracle is a divine caster, so Religion is usually more central. Occultism still fits curse, mystery, and strange-prophecy campaigns. |
Player Core 2 And Dark Archive Hooks
Player Core 2 expands the number of characters who can justify Occultism without being a classic occult caster. Liminal Catfolk gain occult detect magic and a bonus to Recall Knowledge about creatures from beyond the Universe. Occult Dragonblood options can grant Occultism and Oddity Identification. Astrologer, Root Worker, Cursed, and similar backgrounds give characters explicit occult hooks without requiring a full spellcasting class.
Dark Archive makes Occultism louder by adding major occult-facing character and campaign material: Psychic, Thaumaturge, strange investigations, cursed objects, mental spaces, cryptid-style problems, secret societies, and other weird-case material. The practical takeaway is simple: if the campaign feels like a paranormal investigation, Occultism should probably be one of the party's covered skills.
GM Advice
Occultism scenes work when the answer changes behavior. A good success might reveal that a haunt repeats a death pattern, a ritual is drawing power from the Netherworld, an ooze is occult-significant rather than natural, or a cult sign is not religious devotion but secret-society signaling. A bad Occultism scene says "this is occult" and then waits for applause. No applause is coming.
Use the checks and DCs guide and GM skill DC guide to decide whether the DC is simple, level-based, rarity-adjusted, or tied to a creature, item, spell rank, hazard, or ritual. GM Core guidance is especially useful for keeping Recall Knowledge actionable: give a fact that helps the party choose tactics, targets, routes, precautions, or social leverage.
Occultism also belongs in subsystems. A mystery can use Occultism to interpret clues, a chase can use it to predict a haunted route, and a research scene can use it to separate nonsense from actual metaphysical danger. Do not make Occultism a password check where failure stops the adventure. Failure should cost time, create risk, give partial truth, trigger pressure, or force a messier path.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Treating Occultism as spooky Arcana ● | Give it its own identity: esoteric planes, occult tradition magic, spirits, strange philosophies, aberrations, oozes, and impossible patterns. |
| Using Occultism for every secret society ● | Use Occultism for mystery cult signs and esoteric lodges. Use Society, Diplomacy, Deception, or Lore for mundane organization work. |
| Hiding all useful facts behind one roll ● | Let basic observations happen, then use Occultism to reveal leverage, warnings, and deeper truths. |
| Forgetting trained actions ● | Recall Knowledge can be untrained, but Decipher Writing, Identify Magic, and Learn a Spell through Occultism require training. |
| Expecting Occultism alone to solve curses ● | Use spells, rituals, story solutions, or the Break Curse feat when the character actually has that tool. |

Hot Takes
Occultism is one of PF2e's best campaign-tone skills. If the campaign has haunts, cursed objects, psychic pressure, strange cults, spirits, aberrations, or planar wrongness, it can feel essential. If the GM never lets weird information change decisions, Occultism becomes a character sheet mood board with a modifier.
The best Occultism player is not the one who asks, "What do I know?" The best Occultism player asks, "What about this should worry us right now?"
