Introduction
Performance is not the generic "I am charismatic" skill. It is the skill for putting on a show: acting, comedy, dance, instruments, oration, singing, and any other table-approved art form. That makes it narrower than Diplomacy, Deception, or Intimidation, but not weaker when the campaign actually has audiences.

Performance At A Glance
| Performance Use | Best Fit | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Bard identity ● | Bards, maestro-flavored characters, occult performers, and public faces | Bard has actual class and spell support for making Performance matter repeatedly. |
| Battledancer Swashbuckler ● | Swashbucklers who want Perform to generate panache | This is the clearest martial use case because the style makes Perform a bravado action. |
| Social influence with feats ● | Impressive Performance, Fascinating Performance, and public scenes | Without feats, Performance supports social play more than it replaces social skills. |
| Downtime income ● | Campaigns with theaters, salons, temples, festivals, taverns, courts, and patrons | You must be trained, and the available audience determines task quality. |
| Stealth support ● | Parties that use Stealth and distractions | Distracting Performance is strong support, but it requires expert Performance. |
| Random combat performance with no feat support ● | Mostly avoid | Standing in a fight and "doing a cool performance" usually needs a rule hook to matter. The crowd is not obligated to give you action economy. |

What Performance Does
Player Core gives Performance one central action: Perform. A short song, dance, speech, joke, or similar act can prove capability, impress observers, support later Diplomacy, or change attitudes if the GM decides the fiction supports it.
| Job | Training | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Perform ● | Untrained allowed | A one-action way to impress or prove talent. By itself, it rarely produces combat-grade results. |
| Earn Income ● | Trained required | Performance is one of the reliable skills for Earn Income, along with Crafting and Lore. |
| Influence a crowd ● | Usually better with feats | Impressive Performance turns public art into Make an Impression at scale. |
| Fascinate observers ● | Feat required | Fascinating Performance can be excellent, but combat attention makes it harder and adds the incapacitation trait. |
| Support ally stealth ● | Expert with feat | Distracting Performance lets you Create a Diversion for an ally using Performance instead of Deception. |
Performance Types
Player Core attaches traits to different kinds of performance. These matter for effects that care about auditory, linguistic, visual, move, or manipulate traits.
| Performance Type | Common Traits | Practical Note |
|---|---|---|
| Acting or comedy ● | Auditory, linguistic, visual | Good for crowds, disguises, festivals, and public misdirection. |
| Dance ● | Move, visual | Strong flavor for Battledancer Swashbucklers and physical performers. |
| Instrument ● | Auditory, manipulate | Works well with virtuoso instruments and classic Bard presentation. |
| Oration or singing ● | Auditory, linguistic | The cleanest fit for speeches, songs, court scenes, sermons, and rallying public attention. |
Best Performance Skill Feats
| Feat | Best Fit | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Impressive Performance ● | Social performers, Bards, courtiers, celebrity characters | Lets you Make an Impression with Performance and can target large audiences after longer performances. This is the feat that makes Performance a real social tool. |
| Fascinating Performance ● | Bards, Battledancer Swashbucklers, stage magicians, crowd-control scenes | Fascinated is fragile, but the feat gives Perform a clear mechanical hook. Combat use needs a critical success unless a class feature changes the math. |
| Virtuosic Performer ● | Characters devoted to one type of performance | A circumstance bonus to one specialty, increasing at master. Boring? Yes. Effective? Also yes. |
| Distracting Performance ● | Sneaky parties, Rogues, Swashbucklers, heist games | Player Core 2 lets expert Performance Create a Diversion for an ally. That is real teamwork, not just jazz hands near a guard. |
| Acrobatic Performer ● | Acrobatics-first characters who want performance flavor | Lets Acrobatics handle Perform and gives a small bonus if trained in both. Great for circus characters; less useful if you actually want Performance feats. |
| Legendary Performer ● | High-level fame campaigns | Powerful reputation and Earn Income flavor, but many campaigns end before it matters. Take it when celebrity is part of play. |
Best Characters For Performance
| Character | Why |
|---|---|
| Bard ● | Bard is the natural Performance class. Composition magic, occult spellcasting, social skill play, and class identity all point here. |
| Swashbuckler ● | Battledancer turns Perform into a bravado action, and Player Core 2 adds more Performance combat support. |
| Rogue ● | Skill increases and heist play make Performance useful when paired with Distracting Performance or social infiltration. |
| Sorcerer ● | Charisma is already high, and Performance can support occult, draconic, hag, or public-facing bloodline concepts. |
| Oracle ● | Strong Charisma helps, but the class usually wants Religion, Diplomacy, or other campaign-critical skills first. |
| Commander ● | Performance can fit speeches and battlefield presence, but the mechanics usually reward other tactical investments more directly. |
| Champion ● | Works for sermons, ceremonies, and public oath scenes, but Diplomacy and Religion usually come first. |
Player Core 2 Hooks
Player Core 2 gives Performance more practical lanes. Battledancer Swashbucklers are trained in Performance, gain Fascinating Performance, and make Perform a bravado action. Gladiator Dedication uses Impressive Performance as the entry point, can roll Performance for initiative when spectators are present, and later pushes Performance into intimidation-style combat theater.
Acrobatic Performer lets an Acrobatics-first character Perform with Acrobatics, which is ideal for circus, dancer, and physical spectacle characters. Distracting Performance is the big party tool: expert Performance can Create a Diversion for an ally, which connects Performance directly to Stealth, Deception, and heist play.
GM Advice
Performance needs an audience. That audience can be a tavern, a royal salon, a theater, a festival crowd, a courtroom, a troop of soldiers, a group of children, a mob, a haunt, a fey court, or one bored guard who made the terrible mistake of having ears. If nobody can react, Performance has very little room to matter.
GM Core supports using Performance in downtime, social scenes, crowds, research, and hazards. Performance can Earn Income, create patrons, attract rivals, expose the party to nobles, keep a show running when another performer fails to appear, or become the reason a quest walks onto the stage. It can also help move through crowds, influence public scenes, and interact with unusual hazards when sound, rhythm, or ceremony matters.
Use checks and DCs and GM skill DCs to set the difficulty from the audience, venue, stakes, target attitude, task level, or Will DC. For downtime, remember that the available audience determines how lucrative the task can be. A village tavern and an extraplanar court are not the same gig, even if the lute is aggressively tuned.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Treating Performance as Diplomacy with glitter ● | Use Impressive Performance when you want Performance to Make an Impression reliably. Otherwise, let Perform support the scene rather than replace every social action. |
| Expecting combat value without a hook ● | Bring Fascinating Performance, Battledancer, Gladiator, Bard features, or another rule that tells the table what the performance does. |
| Ignoring performance traits ● | Auditory, linguistic, visual, move, and manipulate traits can decide whether an act works in silence, darkness, restraints, or a hostile room. |
| Making every crowd identical ● | A commoner audience, artisan audience, noble audience, and otherworldly audience should not ask for the same performance. |
| Forgetting trained Earn Income ● | Performance can Earn Income, but only if trained. |

Hot Takes
Performance is not weak. It is just honest about needing a stage. If the campaign never has witnesses, patrons, crowds, ceremonies, rumors, rival artists, or public status, the skill will look thin because the world gave it nothing to bite.
The best Performance characters do not ask the GM, "Can I roll Performance?" They create a scene where everyone at the table understands why the performance matters.
