The short answer

The Pathfinder 2e Remastered Psychic is a low-slot occult caster from Dark Archives (Remastered) that centers play on psi cantrips, amps, and a timed Unleash Psyche burst. Its subconscious mind chooses Intelligence or Charisma, while its conscious mind supplies psi cantrips and psychic tools.

Introduction

Psychic is the occult caster for players who want cantrips to matter, focus points to feel tactical, and every big turn to look like the laws of reality just lost an argument. It comes from Dark Archive Remastered, but it plugs into the same Remaster structure as Player Core, Player Core 2, GM Core, and Monster Core.

Disclaimer

This guide ranks Psychic options for broad PF2e table usefulness, using Dark Archive Remastered as the class source and Player Core, Player Core 2, GM Core, and Monster Core where those books affect spells, equipment, actions, encounter pressure, or monster matchups. The goal is not to flatten every conscious mind into the same answer. The goal is to show which choices carry more tables with less special pleading.

Ratings assume a campaign with combat, exploration, occult weirdness, social scenes, and enough monster variety that all-mental spell planning gets punished eventually.

Rating Legend

RatingMeaning
●Excellent default choice. Strong at most tables.
●Good choice. Build, party, or campaign dependent.
●Playable but narrow, risky, or demanding.
●Usually not worth building around unless the concept matters more than power.

Psychic is not "Wizard but spooky." It is closer to a precision instrument with a panic button. If you play it like a normal full caster with fewer spell slots, you will be annoyed. If you play it like a cantrip-and-focus specialist with timed burst, it sings.

What Makes Psychic Different

Psychic gets occult spellcasting, but fewer spell slots than a standard full caster. The tradeoff is stronger cantrip infrastructure. Your conscious mind grants psi cantrips, and amps let you spend Focus Points to make those cantrips hit harder, protect better, reposition better, or support better.

The other defining feature is Unleash Psyche. If your turn begins, you are in an encounter, you cast a spell on your previous turn, and you are not stupefied, you can unleash for 2 rounds. During that window, damaging spells from your Psychic spellcasting gain a status bonus to damage equal to double the spell rank. Afterward, you cannot unleash again for 2 rounds and you are stupefied 1 for 2 rounds.

That means Psychic has three modes:

ModeWhat you do
SetupPosition, identify defenses, cast a spell, and decide whether the fight deserves the burst window.
PressureAmp psi cantrips, cast important spells, and use your conscious mind's best repeatable tools.
UnleashedSpend 2 rounds converting good targets into very bad decisions.

Conscious Minds Ranked

Your conscious mind is the most important Psychic choice. It gives your granted spell path, your standard psi cantrips, and unique psi cantrips.

RankConscious mindBest atWatch out for
1Tangible Dream ●Defense, force damage, illusions, party protectionImaginary Weapon is dangerous if you build around touch range without defenses.
2The Infinite Eye ●Support, information, action quality, targetingLower direct damage than blaster minds.
3The Unbound Step ●Mobility, positioning, teleport tricks, survivalMap dependent; less flashy on flat empty battlefields.
4The Oscillating Wave ●Fire and cold blasting, damage turns, temp HP tricksConservation of Energy rewards planning and punishes sloppy element choice.
5The Distant Grasp ●Telekinetic damage, forced movement, battlefield manipulationSolid but less broadly defensive than the top minds.
6The Silent Whisper ●Telepathy, mental control, support, social horrorMental immunity, mindless creatures, and high Will enemies can blunt your best tools.

1. Tangible Dream

Tangible Dream is the best generalist Psychic. Its standard psi cantrips are figment and shield, and the shield amp is a real reason to pick the mind. A Psychic who can protect an ally at range, spend its own reaction for Shield Block, and later maintain layered defense has a better answer to the class's biggest weakness: getting hit at the wrong time.

The unique psi cantrips add offense and control. Imaginary Weapon is one of the mind's loudest damage tools, but touch range is a trap if you do not build for it. Astral Rain gives repeatable area pressure. Hologram Cage gives line-of-sight and force-wall style control later.

Best pairs:

PairWhy it works
Precise DisciplineAdds a defensive psyche action to the best defensive conscious mind.
Gathered LoreTurns the Psychic into a shield-and-support occult tactician.
Emotional AcceptanceGives Charisma, emergency support, and a more empathic flavor.

Tangible Dream is the "I would like to survive my cool character concept" Psychic. That is not boring. That is mature.

2. The Infinite Eye

Infinite Eye is the best support conscious mind. Its standard psi cantrips are detect magic and guidance, and amped guidance is the headline: using the bonus after an ally fails or critically fails, if it changes the result, is exactly the sort of action economy PF2e rewards.

Its unique psi cantrips push the same identity. Glimpse Weakness adds team damage. Omnidirectional Scan helps Seek, support Aid, and expose enemy defenses. Foresee the Path lets allies punish movement.

The granted spell path includes classic information and support tools such as sure strike, augury, locate, clairvoyance, scouting eye, truesight, true target, unrelenting observation, and foresight. You are not the biggest damage Psychic. You are the Psychic who makes the party's good turns happen more often.

Best pairs:

PairWhy it works
Gathered LoreIntelligence, Occultism Aid, and information tools all point the same direction.
Precise DisciplineKeeps the support Psychic alive while it spends actions enabling allies.
Emotional AcceptanceTurns the build toward face support and mental protection.

3. The Unbound Step

Unbound Step is the mobility conscious mind. Phase Bolt, Warp Step, Distortion Lens, Ghostly Shift, and Tesseract Tunnel all care about movement, lines, terrain, and angles. In a GM Core-style encounter with terrain, hazards, chokepoints, elevation, or rescue pressure, this mind gets better every round.

Phase Bolt matters because cover and resistance are common monster and battlefield problems. Warp Step matters because Psychic cannot afford to lose turns waddling into position. Tesseract Tunnel is the sort of tool that makes a fight feel unfair in the party's favor when the map allows it.

Best pairs:

PairWhy it works
Precise DisciplineThe defensive bonus fits a mobile midline caster.
Wandering ReverieConcealment plus movement makes the dreamlike skirmisher concept work.
Gathered LoreAdds the knowledge role that mobility alone does not cover.

4. The Oscillating Wave

Oscillating Wave is the cleanest blaster mind. It works with fire and cold, standard psi cantrips frostbite and ignition, and a Conservation of Energy rule that alternates adding and removing energy. That rule is the reason the mind is interesting and the reason it is not the top recommendation for every player.

When it works, it works hard. Ignition and frostbite become better Psychic staples. Thermal Stasis gives resistance support. Entropic Wheel rewards you for tracking fire and cold damage. Redistribute Potential gives a two-element area tool with condition pressure.

The weakness is Monster Core reality. Fire resistance, cold resistance, immunities, high Reflex or Fortitude, and encounter terrain all matter. This is still a good damage mind, but it asks you to pay attention.

Best pairs:

PairWhy it works
Precise DisciplineBlasters draw attention; defense matters.
Gathered LoreRecall Knowledge helps you avoid bad element choices.
Emotional AcceptanceCharisma blaster with emergency support is playable and stylish.

Oscillating Wave is for players who like bookkeeping and can admit that some monsters should not be solved with more fire.

5. The Distant Grasp

Distant Grasp is the telekinetic mind. Telekinetic Hand and Telekinetic Projectile are the standard psi cantrips, and the unique psi cantrips lean into forceful manipulation: Telekinetic Rend, Vector Screen, and Dancing Blade.

This mind is easy to understand. Move things. Hit things. Push things. Block projectiles. It is reliable and physical in a class that often leans mental. That is useful against creatures where mental effects are a bad plan.

The reason it ranks here is that reliability is not the same as breadth. Tangible Dream defends better. Infinite Eye supports better. Unbound Step solves positioning better. Distant Grasp is still a good pick if you want telekinesis to be the whole character.

Best pairs:

PairWhy it works
Gathered LoreIntelligence and battlefield analysis fit the telekinetic tactician.
Precise DisciplineAdds personal defense to a mind that wants clear lines of effect.
Wandering ReverieMakes the telekinetic concept stranger and more elusive.

6. The Silent Whisper

Silent Whisper is the telepathic and mental control mind. Daze and message become psi cantrips, while Forbidden Thought, Shatter Mind, and Contagious Idea push the "your brain is now a public battlefield" identity.

It can be excellent in social-heavy, occult, horror, faction, and investigation campaigns. It also has useful granted spells such as mindlink, stupefy, heroism, telepathy, sending, visions of danger, uncontrollable dance, and telepathic demand.

The drawback is matchup dependence. Monster Core creatures with mindless traits, mental immunity, strong Will, or limited language/social hooks can make this mind feel worse than it is. Bring non-mental answers and do not make every slot a Will-save argument.

Best pairs:

PairWhy it works
Emotional AcceptanceThe pure Charisma telepath is strong in social and support scenes.
Gathered LoreAdds better knowledge coverage and less reliance on social pressure.
Precise DisciplineHelps the fragile mind-controller survive attention.

Subconscious Minds Ranked

Subconscious mind decides your key attribute and gives your psyche action. The psyche action only matters during Unleash Psyche, but that is exactly when good action compression matters.

RankSubconscious mindKey attributeWhy
1Precise Discipline ●IntelligenceCalculate Threats gives a clean defensive bonus to AC and Reflex saves during your risky burst turns.
2Gathered Lore ●IntelligenceRecall the Teachings lets you Aid allies with Occultism across the battlefield during Unleash Psyche.
3Emotional Acceptance ●CharismaRestore the Mind gives mental protection or level-scaling healing, making it the best empathic support option.
4Wandering Reverie ●CharismaFade into Daydreams gives concealment, but it does not let you Hide because your location remains obvious.

Precise Discipline

Precise Discipline is the best default. Psychic is fragile, and Unleash Psyche encourages you to spend 2 rounds doing conspicuous magic. A psyche action that gives +2 circumstance to AC and Reflex saves until your next turn is boring in the best possible way.

Choose this if you want Intelligence, consistency, and fewer dramatic trips to dying rules.

Gathered Lore

Gathered Lore is the support player's pick. Recall the Teachings lets you count as prepared to Aid allies in range and usually uses Occultism. That connects naturally to Occultism, Recall Knowledge, and the skill feat guide.

Choose this if your table uses teamwork, Aid, knowledge checks, and tactical setup. If your group treats Aid like decorative parsley, rank this lower.

Emotional Acceptance

Emotional Acceptance is the best Charisma support option. Restore the Mind can grant mental-effect save support or restore Hit Points based on level, though the target becomes temporarily immune for 10 minutes.

Choose this if you want to be a face, empath, and support caster who still gets weird Psychic turns.

Wandering Reverie

Wandering Reverie is stylish and playable. Concealment during Unleash Psyche helps, especially with stealth and positioning, but the action has a ceiling because it does not make you hidden.

Choose this for dream logic, Charisma, and evasive flavor. Do not choose it because you expect it to carry your entire defense plan.

Amps And Focus Pressure

Psychic starts with a focus pool of 2 and spends Focus Points differently from many classes. You do not mainly collect normal focus spells from your class. You amp psi cantrips.

Important amp rules in plain English:

RulePractical result
Amping usually costs 1 Focus PointYou can have big cantrip turns early, but not forever.
Amp is a free action before the psi cantripYour next action must be casting that psi cantrip.
You generally use only one amp on a cantripDo not plan combo turns that the action rules do not support.
Amp and spellshape usually do not stackTreat amps as the defining modification unless a rule says otherwise.
Psi cantrips heighten automaticallyYour repeatable class tools scale with level.
Psychic can regain 2 Focus Points on Refocus if it only spent them on psychic amps or psychic abilitiesNon-psychic focus options can reduce your refresh efficiency.

The best Psychic feat or archetype is sometimes "nothing that messes with my focus rhythm." A shiny off-class focus spell that makes you Refocus for only 1 point can reduce your output.

Unleash Psyche Timing

Unleash Psyche is powerful, but it is not free damage with no table cost.

Timing questionGood answer
Did I cast a spell last turn?If yes, you may be able to unleash at the start of this turn.
Am I stupefied? If yes, no unleash. Also, the post-unleash drawback makes later casting riskier.
Do I have a target worth bursting?Unleash when the enemy, save, or area setup is worth it.
Can allies protect me?Better if the front line, terrain, or control spells already limit retaliation.
Do I need damage now?Unleash rewards damaging Psychic spells; do not waste it on a turn that cannot cash out.

The damage bonus applies to damaging spells from your Psychic spellcasting and equals double the spell rank. It applies to initial damage, and each creature takes the bonus once per spell. That makes area spells, multi-target spells, and reliable amped cantrips attractive during the window.

Do not unleash just because the button is available. Unleash after you have done the boring grown-up work: position, identify the target, check the battlefield, and make sure you have a spell worth casting.

Ability Scores

Psychic is unusual because your key attribute depends on subconscious mind. Emotional Acceptance and Wandering Reverie use Charisma. Gathered Lore and Precise Discipline use Intelligence. That choice changes your skills, party face role, and how you solve problems outside combat.

PriorityAbilityNotes
1Intelligence or Charisma ●Your spell DC and spell attack modifier. Pick the subconscious mind first, then protect this score.
2Dexterity ●You are untrained in armor and trained in unarmored defense. Dexterity helps AC, Reflex, initiative, and survival.
3Constitution ●6 HP per level is fragile. Constitution makes mistakes less final.
4Wisdom ●Perception, Will support before later class features, and Medicine if the party needs it.
5The other mental key ●A Charisma Psychic may still want Intelligence for skills. An Intelligence Psychic may still want Charisma for social play. Do this after defenses.
6Strength ●Only for a very specific weapon or archetype concept. Psychic has better ways to spend actions.

Default advice: start with your key mental score high, then keep Dexterity and Constitution respectable. A Psychic who wins initiative, avoids getting hit, and survives the first bad save gets to keep being clever.

Skills

Psychic is trained in Occultism and gains additional trained skills equal to 3 plus Intelligence modifier. Intelligence Psychics are naturally better at wide skill coverage, while Charisma Psychics often become the party face.

SkillWhy
Occultism ●Automatic, thematic, and essential for strange creatures, magic, rituals, and Dark Archive-style problems.
Arcana ●Useful second knowledge skill for magical creatures, spell effects, and broad campaign utility.
Society ●Strong for urban, faction, investigation, and social campaigns.
Diplomacy ●Excellent for Charisma Psychics and Emotional Acceptance builds.
Deception ●Strong for Silent Whisper, social manipulation, and occult intrigue.
Intimidation ●Useful combat debuff and social pressure if Charisma is high.
Medicine ●Helps cover low HP and reduces pressure on spell slots between fights.
Stealth ●Useful for fragile casters, especially with scouting parties, but not core to every Psychic.
Athletics ●Let someone else wrestle the ogre. You are busy attacking its thoughts or moving space around it.

Backgrounds

Use the backgrounds guide for the full picker. Psychic backgrounds should support your key attribute, give a useful skill, and reinforce how your psychic power shows up at the table.

Background laneBest PsychicsWhy it works
Scholar, occult student, or academy background ●Gathered Lore, Precise Discipline, Infinite EyeIntelligence, Occultism-adjacent play, and Recall Knowledge all line up.
Artist, performer, or dreamer background ●Wandering Reverie, Tangible DreamSupports Charisma, Performance, imagination themes, and social scenes.
Emissary, negotiator, or court background ●Emotional Acceptance, Silent WhisperTurns Charisma Psychic into a party face.
Investigator or researcher background ●Infinite Eye, Distant Grasp, Gathered LoreGreat when GM Core subsystems, clues, hazards, and secrets matter.
Healer or caregiver background ●Emotional Acceptance, Tangible DreamGives practical party support and a reason to invest in Medicine.
Soldier or martial background ●Imaginary Weapon experimentsOnly worth it if the build has a touch-range or weapon plan.

The Psychic background should explain discipline, obsession, trauma, training, or weird talent. It should not be a random hat you wore before becoming a spell turret.

Spells And Cantrip Planning

Psychic has fewer spell slots than a normal full caster, so spell choice should be ruthless. Your cantrips and amps carry repeatable turns. Your slots should solve problems cantrips cannot.

Spell jobWhy Psychic wants itLinks
Repeatable cantrip pressureYour class is built around psi cantrips and amps.Cantrips, Psychic spells
Occult controlConditions, movement denial, fear, perception pressure, and mental disruption can beat raw damage.Occult spells, combat spells
Non-mental answersMonster Core matchups can punish all-mental repertoires.Monster traits, monster use
Defense and escapePsychic has low HP and no armor training.Defensive items, movement
Information and scoutingOccult casters can be excellent at identifying strange problems before initiative.Detection and senses, GM subsystems

Good Psychic spell planning is less about collecting every spooky spell and more about covering defenses. Have Will pressure, Fortitude pressure, Reflex pressure, and at least one plan for enemies that ignore mental effects.

Equipment Recommendations

Psychic does not need fancy weapons first. Psychic needs not to fold when an enemy notices the floating green psychic storm.

GearWhy
Explorer's clothing with armor runes ●You are trained in unarmored defense, not armor. Keep AC item progression current.
Resilient runes and save boosters ●Stupefied, conditions, and bad saves can ruin caster turns.
Staves ●A staff expands your occult options without bloating your repertoire. See staves and wands.
Wands ●Best for once-per-day defensive, scouting, movement, or utility spells you do not want as signature spells.
Scrolls ●Excellent for campaign answers: detection, travel, rare utility, unusual defenses, and "we need this once" magic. See consumables.
Healing and condition consumables ●Psychic should not rely on being rescued every time positioning goes wrong.
Weapon upgrades ●Only prioritize them for a specific archetype or unusual build.

Staves and wands are especially important because spontaneous casters live with repertoire pressure. A Psychic who buys only damage toys will eventually stare at a problem that needed detection, movement, or defense and quietly regret being dramatic.

Archetype Recommendations

Archetypes should add tools without breaking your focus rhythm.

Archetype laneWhy
Caster archetypes ●Extra slots, utility, and list access can help, but watch action cost and focus competition. See spellcasting archetypes.
Skill and lore archetypes ●Psychic already values Intelligence, Charisma, Occultism, investigation, and social scenes. See lore archetypes.
Dark Archive archetypes ●Strong thematic fits for strange investigations, cults, mindscapes, and paranormal campaigns. See Dark Archive archetypes.
Defensive archetypes ●Armor, reactions, or survival tools can be good, but check prerequisites and avoid plans that demand front-line stats.
Weapon archetypes ●Usually worse than improving spells, skills, defense, and magic items unless the whole concept supports it.

For free archetype games, prioritize actions you can actually use. Psychic turns already want casting, amp setup, movement, psyche actions, and sometimes a reaction. An archetype that adds five cool actions and no action economy plan is a brochure, not a build.

Example Builds

BuildConscious mindSubconscious mindPlan
Shielded DreamerTangible DreamPrecise DisciplineAmp shield, protect allies, use force and illusion tools, and survive the attention.
Occult TacticianInfinite EyeGathered LoreFeed allies better rolls, information, target selection, and Aid support.
Thermal BlasterOscillating WavePrecise DisciplineUse fire and cold pressure, track Conservation of Energy, and avoid bad element matchups.
Spatial SkirmisherUnbound StepWandering ReverieAbuse movement, concealment, teleport lanes, and map geometry.
Telekinetic ControllerDistant GraspGathered LorePush, move, screen, damage, and Recall Knowledge to target weak defenses.
Whispering FaceSilent WhisperEmotional AcceptanceWin social and mental scenes, then support and disrupt with telepathy in combat.

Monster Core Matchups

Psychic must respect monster traits. Mental effects are excellent until they are not. Mindless creatures, unusual senses, high Will saves, resistances, immunities, and encounter roles all change your best turn.

Monster problemPsychic response
High WillTarget Reflex, Fortitude, AC, movement, terrain, or allies instead.
Mental immunity or mindless traitsUse non-mental psi cantrips, force, elemental, telekinetic, defensive, or utility options.
Ranged pressureUse cover, movement, defensive spells, Tangible Dream shield tools, or line-of-sight denial.
Fast melee enemiesDo not wait until they arrive. Move, control space, and coordinate with frontliners.
Hidden or concealed enemiesInfinite Eye-style detection, Seek support, and detection rules matter.

A Psychic who never uses Recall Knowledge is leaving class power on the floor. Monster Core is full of enemies that punish guessing.

GM Core Campaign Fit

Psychic gets better when the campaign uses more than blank-room fights. GM Core tools such as hazards, social encounters, research, exploration pacing, and treasure by level all shape the class.

Campaign featurePsychic impact
Terrain and coverGreat for Unbound Step, Distant Grasp, and line-of-sight control.
Social encountersCharisma Psychics and Silent Whisper builds gain real spotlight time.
Research and investigationIntelligence Psychics, Infinite Eye, Gathered Lore, and Occultism become stronger.
Mindscapes and occult threatsPsychic gets thematic and mechanical relevance. See mindscapes.
Strict encounter pacingFocus and Refocus discipline becomes a major power lever.

Common Mistakes

MistakeFix
Treating slots like a normal full casterLet amps and cantrips handle routine turns; spend slots on swing problems.
Unleashing immediatelyWait until the target, position, and spell choice justify the 2-round window.
Ignoring defensesKeep item bonuses, saves, movement, and emergency consumables current.
Overbuilding mental effectsMonster traits can shut that down. Bring non-mental lines.
Taking focus-heavy archetypes casuallyProtect the Psychic Refocus advantage unless the trade is clearly worth it.
Building around Imaginary Weapon without a safety planTouch-range Psychic can be strong, but only if the rest of the build admits that enemies hit back.

Hot Takes

  • Psychic is not a standard full caster with fewer slots. Treat amps and psi cantrips as the class engine, then spend slots on the turns that change the encounter.
  • Tangible Dream is not a boring safety choice. A Psychic who stays conscious has more interesting turns.
  • A flashy off-class focus spell can be a downgrade when it breaks the Psychic's stronger Refocus rhythm.
  • Recall Knowledge is combat infrastructure for Psychic, especially when monster traits make a favorite mental effect unreliable.

Final Verdict

Psychic is a strong class for players who enjoy timing, resource discipline, and a little table math. Tangible Dream is the best first Psychic. Infinite Eye is the best support Psychic. Oscillating Wave is the best blaster Psychic. Silent Whisper is the best campaign-dependent Psychic, which is a polite way of saying "ask your GM whether the adventure is full of brains you can argue with."
