Introduction
Dark Archive archetypes are not normal "I would like a little more damage" character options. They are psychic side doors, cursed bargains, time accidents, dream intrusions, esoteric tools, and suspiciously convenient weapons made out of thought. That makes them fun, but it also makes them easier to misuse.

This guide ranks the major Dark Archive archetypes for Remaster play and explains who should actually take them. Use it with the PF2e archetypes hub, Free Archetype guide, Psychic class guide, Thaumaturge class guide, occult spell guide, deviant abilities, mindscapes, and cryptid GM guide.
Rating Legend
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| • Strong | Broadly useful and easy to justify if the GM allows it. |
| • Good | Wants the right class, campaign, or action budget. |
| • Campaign-dependent | Powerful in the right story, awkward elsewhere. |
| • Avoid | Usually not worth building around unless the table is specifically about it. |
Dark Archive Archetypes Ranked
| Archetype | Best For | Main Warning |
|---|---|---|
| Psychic Archetype • | Int or Cha characters who want occult cantrips, focus play, and utility | Casting still costs actions and wants skill investment |
| Thaumaturge Archetype • | Charisma martials, skill characters, monster hunters, one-handed weapon builds | Wants a free hand and a real reason to spend setup actions |
| Mind Smith • | Weapon-focused characters who want a flexible signature armament | The weapon is the point; if you do not care about it, skip |
| Chronoskimmer • | Initiative tacticians, mobile martials, tables that like time tricks | Rare access and bookkeeping can slow tables down |
| Time Mage • | Spellcasters who want temporal focus magic and spell access | Starts later and is not for non-casters |
| Alter Ego • | Deception, Stealth, infiltration, heists, cult investigations | Weak if the campaign never cares about disguises |
| Living Vessel • | Tables that want possession, survival spikes, and body-horror bargains | Rare, story-heavy, and can hand control to the entity |
| Pactbinder • | Social characters in campaigns with bargains, outsiders, and consequences | Pacts are not casual coupons; they create obligations |
| Curse Maelstrom • | Curse-heavy campaigns and characters built around misfortune | It can turn off your own fortune benefits and needs curse support |
| Sleepwalker • | Dream campaigns, occult mysteries, psychic investigation | Daydream Trance has drawbacks and dream play needs spotlight |
| Psychic Duelist • | Mindscape or psychic-duel campaigns | If psychic duels rarely happen, the archetype does very little |

Hot Take: Dark Archive works best when you choose the narrative complication you want at the table, then build around it.
Best Picks By Character Type
| Character Type | Best Dark Archive Picks | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Investigator | Psychic, Thaumaturge, Alter Ego | Int, skills, clues, occult weirdness, and false identities all fit the chassis. |
| Rogue | Thaumaturge, Alter Ego, Psychic, Mind Smith | Rogues can turn infiltration and weird utility into actual table value. |
| Swashbuckler | Thaumaturge, Mind Smith, Chronoskimmer | One-handed style and Charisma make the best picks feel natural. |
| Bard | Psychic, Pactbinder, Time Mage | Occult casting and social pressure make these dips easy to justify. |
| Alchemist | Psychic, Alter Ego, Mind Smith | Int-based occult support can help, but action economy is already crowded. |
| Fighter | Mind Smith, Chronoskimmer, Thaumaturge | The base chassis is strong enough to spend feats on a strange identity. |
| Ranger | Thaumaturge, Mind Smith, Chronoskimmer | Monster-hunting, tracking, and targeted offense all pair well. |
| Monk | Psychic, Chronoskimmer, Sleepwalker | Mobility and focus play can work, but stance/action pressure matters. |
| Wizard or Witch | Time Mage, Psychic, Sleepwalker | Casting infrastructure and occult themes are already close. |
| Champion | Thaumaturge, Living Vessel, Pactbinder | Supernatural duty and forbidden bargains can work if the deity/cause allows it. |
What Dark Archive Adds
Dark Archive Remastered adds two full classes, Psychic and Thaumaturge, plus archetypes that let other characters borrow pieces of occult casting, esoteric monster lore, time manipulation, false identities, cursed power, dream intrusion, psychic duels, pacts, and possession stories.
It also connects to several GM-facing tools. Mindscapes, deviant abilities, secret societies and cults, social encounters, and cryptids give these archetypes somewhere to matter. Without that campaign support, some of them become very expensive costume changes.
Psychic Archetype •
Psychic archetype is the most broadly useful Dark Archive archetype because it gives a clean occult casting identity through psi cantrips, Psychic spellcasting feats, and later amp support. The dedication asks for Intelligence or Charisma and Occultism, so it naturally fits mental stat characters.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Investigator, Bard, Rogue, Alchemist, Sorcerer |
| Best reason to take it | You want a repeatable psychic cantrip package and occult utility. |
| Best follow-up | Psi Development if you actually want amps, then spellcasting feats if the repertoire matters. |
| Main trap | Taking it on a martial who never wants to spend two actions casting. |
Psychic dedication is especially good for characters who already use Occultism, social skills, or investigative play. It is less impressive on a character who dumps mental stats and only wants a spooky sticker for the character sheet.
Hot Take: Psychic archetype is the best occult dip in the book because it gives you a cantrip identity, then asks if you want to go deeper. Very polite. Very unsettling.
Psychic Archetype Feat Path
| Level Band | What To Look For | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Psychic Dedication | Gets the occult chassis started through a conscious mind and psi cantrip. |
| 4 | Basic Thoughtform or Basic Psychic Spellcasting | Choose class-feat texture or real spellcasting progression. |
| 6 | Psi Development | The big payoff if you want amp play and a focus pool. |
| 12+ | Expert and Master Psychic Spellcasting | Only worth it if occult slots stay relevant to your plan. |
Use the Psychic feat guide, psychic spells guide, focus spells, and cantrip guide when planning the deeper version.
Thaumaturge Archetype •
Thaumaturge archetype is the best Dark Archive pick for characters who want supernatural monster-hunter play without becoming a full Thaumaturge. It asks for Charisma, gives an implement identity, and adds esoterica tools built around turning knowledge and strange objects into combat pressure.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Swashbuckler, Rogue, Ranger, Fighter, Champion |
| Best reason to take it | You want a monster-hunter identity, an implement, and Charisma-based occult utility. |
| Best follow-up | Implement Initiate if your chosen implement matters every fight. |
| Main trap | Ignoring free-hand and action demands. |
The archetype is strongest when the character already fights with one hand free or can adjust equipment around the implement. If your entire turn is already spoken for, the archetype can become a very stylish traffic jam.
Thaumaturge Archetype Feat Path
| Level Band | What To Look For | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Thaumaturge Dedication | Starts the implement and esoterica package. |
| 4 | Basic Thaumaturgy | Adds low-level Thaumaturge feat texture. |
| 6 | Implement Initiate or Advanced Thaumaturgy | Turns the implement into more than a prop. |
| 8+ | Magical Knowledge or later defensive picks | Adds knowledge depth or resilience. |
Use the Thaumaturge feat guide, creature traits, Occultism, Religion, Nature, and Arcana guides to make the monster-hunter side pay off.
Mind Smith •
Mind Smith gives you a weapon made from mental force and then lets that weapon become the center of the build. It is excellent for characters who want a signature armament, flexible weapon form, rune support, and paranormal flavor without becoming a caster.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Swashbuckler, Monk |
| Best weapon plans | Agile/finesse one-hander, d8 one-hander, reach two-hander, or ranged projection support. |
| Best follow-up | Mental Forge, Mind Projectiles, Runic Mind Smithing. |
| Main trap | Treating the mind weapon as backup gear instead of the build's main tool. |
Mind Smith is strongest when you design around the weapon profile. Finesse builds like the one-handed options. Reach builds like the two-handed form. Characters who care about maneuvers should look closely at trait choices and Athletics.
Mind Smith Feat Path
| Level Band | What To Look For | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Mind Smith Dedication | Creates the mental weapon and sets the build's combat identity. |
| 4 | Mental Forge or Ghost Blade | Adds combat traits or better incorporeal coverage. |
| 6-8 | Mind Shards, Mind Projectiles, Malleable Mental Forge | Gives area pressure, ranged options, or daily flexibility. |
| 10+ | Runic Mind Smithing and later rune upgrades | Keeps the weapon feeling like a real scaling centerpiece. |
Pair this with weapons, runes, actions and activities, and monster traits. Monster Core matters here because incorporeal enemies, physical resistance, and damage traits decide whether your special weapon feels clever or merely dramatic.
Chronoskimmer •
Chronoskimmer is for characters who want to cheat the clock in small, tactical ways. It can influence initiative, rerolls, movement, ally timing, and action bursts. It is also rare, and rare options should not wander into a campaign uninvited like they own the initiative order.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Fighter, Ranger, Swashbuckler, Monk, Investigator |
| Best reason to take it | You want initiative, mobility, and fortune-style timing tools. |
| Best follow-up | Turn Back the Clock, Guide the Timeline, Borrow Time, Space-Time Shift. |
| Main trap | Adding too many once-per-day or once-per-hour tricks without a plan. |
Chronoskimmer is at its best on proactive characters. If going first matters to your build, it has value. If your character mostly reacts after the fight develops, it is less exciting.
Hot Take: Chronoskimmer is for players who can resolve their turn quickly. If you need five minutes to decide how to abuse time, the clock has already won.
Time Mage •
Time Mage is a spellcaster-only archetype that adds temporal focus magic and spell access. It starts later than many archetypes, which means it is less of a character identity at level 1 and more of a mid-campaign specialization.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Wizard, Witch, Bard, Sorcerer, Oracle |
| Best reason to take it | You want time-focused focus spells, temporal spell access, and later spell acceleration. |
| Best follow-up | Future Spell Learning, Chronomancer's Secrets, Spell Acceleration. |
| Main trap | Taking it when your spell list already does the job and your feats are tight. |
The archetype wants a caster that can afford class feats and appreciates spells like haste, slow, and other time effects. It works especially well in parties that exploit action advantages and enemy action denial. See occult spells, arcane spells, focus spells, and conditions for the bigger rules context.
Alter Ego •
Alter Ego is an infiltration archetype built around adopting roles instead of merely wearing a fake mustache and hoping the guard is having a bad day. It cares about Deception, Stealth, role-based Lore, and campaigns where impersonation can solve problems.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Rogue, Investigator, Bard, Swashbuckler |
| Best reason to take it | You want role impersonation, social infiltration, and false identity play. |
| Best follow-up | Change of Face, Fake It Till You Make It, In Plain Sight, Borrow Memories. |
| Main trap | Taking it in a dungeon crawl where nobody cares who the librarian is. |
Alter Ego is a good example of why GM social encounters and subsystems matter. If the campaign uses infiltration, reputation, research, and social access, the archetype sings. If every door is opened by initiative, leave the fake credentials at home.
Living Vessel •
Living Vessel is a rare archetype about sharing your body with an entity. Mechanically, it offers survival tools, entity-flavored attacks, healing, and later transformation. Narratively, it asks the player and GM to agree on what the entity is, what it wants, and how often that bargain pushes back.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Champion, Barbarian, Monk, Oracle, story-heavy martials |
| Best reason to take it | You want a dangerous survival button and an entity as part of the character. |
| Best follow-up | Entity's Strike, Tap Vitality, entity-specific feats, Vessel's Form. |
| Main trap | Ignoring the GM-control and roleplay consequences. |
This is not just a durability dip. The entity can affect behavior, story, and table tone. Use session zero before choosing it, especially if possession, loss of control, demonic influence, fey bargains, or body horror are sensitive topics at the table.
Pactbinder •
Pactbinder turns bargains into power. It begins with Diplomacy and a tradition skill, then moves into vows, social pressure, and pacts with serious consequences. The archetype is good when promises matter. It is bad when promises are treated like flavor text printed in invisible ink.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Bard, Champion, Cleric, Sorcerer, Rogue |
| Best reason to take it | You want social leverage, supernatural contracts, and story-backed power. |
| Best follow-up | Sociable Vow, Pact of Fey Glamour, Pact of Draconic Fury, Pact of Infernal Prowess, Pact of Final Breath. |
| Main trap | Taking pacts without wanting obligations. |
Pactbinder should be coordinated with the GM. Diplomacy, Intimidation, Religion, Nature, Arcana, and Occultism can all matter depending on who you bargain with.
Curse Maelstrom •
Curse Maelstrom is cool, strange, and much narrower than a generic power archetype. It wants a character with a curse history and a GM who will actually put curses, misfortune, and occult backlash on the table. It can penalize nearby enemies, expel cursed energy, and eventually turn curses back, but its engine depends on triggers.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Oracle, Witch, cursed campaign protagonists, occult survivors |
| Best reason to take it | The campaign has recurring curses, misfortune, haunts, or cursed items. |
| Best follow-up | Share Burden, Counter Curse, Accursed Magic, Torrential Backlash, Reverse Curse. |
| Main trap | Building around a state that rarely turns on. |
This archetype interacts heavily with afflictions, conditions, hazards, and GM-controlled curse placement. It can be excellent in the correct horror campaign and underwhelming in a monster-of-the-week game where curses show up twice and both times someone says, "We can just rest, right?"
Sleepwalker •
Sleepwalker is for dream stories, occult scouting, visions, and eerie investigation. It begins with a trance state that helps mental resistance while hurting awareness, then moves into dream infiltration, dream magic, and protection against nightmare effects.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Psychic, Witch, Bard, Investigator, Monk |
| Best reason to take it | The campaign uses dreams, mindscapes, visions, and occult clues. |
| Best follow-up | Infiltrate Dream, Vision of Foresight, Dream Magic, Waking Dream, Ward Slumber. |
| Main trap | Being a dream specialist in a campaign that never sleeps on screen. |
Sleepwalker is strongest with mindscapes, subsystems, and social or mystery play. It is weaker when every session is a tactical room-clear with no psychic scenery.
Psychic Duelist •
Psychic Duelist is powerful only when psychic duels are a recurring campaign feature. It improves psychic-duel initiative, adds duel-specific combat options, and eventually lets the character initiate a psychic duel. That is a real niche, but it is a niche.
| Build Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best users | Psychic, Bard, occult Wizard, Witch |
| Best reason to take it | Psychic duels are central to the campaign. |
| Best follow-up | Duel Spell Advantage, Supreme Psychic Center, Instigate Psychic Duel. |
| Main trap | Taking duel feats when the GM has not planned duels. |
Ask the GM before building toward this. If the table is using psychic duels and mindscapes, great. If not, the archetype is a locked door with a very fancy key.
Free Archetype Notes
Free Archetype is excellent for Dark Archive because it lets characters take flavorful dedication feats without sacrificing every core class choice. That matters most for classes with heavy class-feat pressure, like Alchemist, Monk, Swashbuckler, and Investigator.
Still, Free Archetype does not fix these issues:
| Issue | Why It Still Matters |
|---|---|
| Rarity | Uncommon and rare options still need GM access. |
| Action economy | A free feat does not give you a fourth action. |
| Skill prerequisites | Many options want trained, expert, master, or legendary skill investment. |
| Campaign fit | Psychic duels, pacts, curses, and dream scenes need table support. |
| Gear conflicts | Thaumaturge and Mind Smith can change hand usage, weapons, and rune planning. |
Example Builds
| Build | Core Idea | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Investigator with Psychic Dedication | Int-based occult clue hunter | Occult cantrips and Psychic utility reinforce the class's investigation identity. |
| Swashbuckler with Thaumaturge Dedication | Charisma duelist with an implement | One-handed combat and social confidence make the dip feel natural. |
| Fighter with Mind Smith | Signature weapon specialist | Fighter accuracy makes the mental weapon matter immediately. |
| Wizard with Time Mage | Temporal controller | The caster already wants spells that manipulate actions, positioning, and timing. |
| Rogue with Alter Ego | Heist infiltrator | Deception, Stealth, and role-based Lore turn social access into real progress. |
| Oracle with Curse Maelstrom | Haunted backlash engine | Curse themes and misfortune mechanics support the archetype's story and triggers. |
| Champion with Living Vessel | Holy warrior with a dangerous passenger | Works only if the deity, cause, and entity conflict are agreed up front. |
GM Core And Monster Core Context
GM Core matters because many Dark Archive archetypes are campaign-facing. Use session zero to discuss rarity, tone, possession, pacts, horror, dreams, and whether players can build around uncommon or rare material. Use subsystems and social encounters to give Alter Ego, Pactbinder, Psychic Duelist, and Sleepwalker real scenes.
Monster Core matters because creature traits, mental immunity, weaknesses, resistances, incorporeal enemies, and elite/weak adjustments decide whether occult tools shine. Thaumaturge-style play wants monster variety. Psychic and Sleepwalker tools care when a creature is mindless or strongly resistant to mental pressure. Mind Smith likes knowing whether ghostly, resistant, or trait-specific enemies are coming.
Hot Takes
Hot Take: Psychic archetype is the best default pick because it gives useful options early and a clean way to go deeper.
Hot Take: Thaumaturge archetype is excellent, but only if your hand economy is not already a furniture pile.
Hot Take: Mind Smith is better than it looks because a signature weapon is more than damage. It shapes feat planning, rune planning, identity, and backup problem solving.
Hot Take: Chronoskimmer is strong at tables that move quickly and mildly cursed at tables where every conditional reroll triggers a committee meeting.
Hot Take: Pactbinder is not free powers for having strong opinions. It is a contract. Read the fine print before signing with the dragon, infernal patron, or whatever has the nicest stationery.
Hot Take: Psychic Duelist should be orange, not red, because it is great in the campaign that actually uses it. Everywhere else, it is a tuxedo at a mud run.
FAQ
Can I take Dark Archive archetypes in a normal Remaster campaign?
Sometimes. Psychic and Thaumaturge archetypes are the easiest to discuss because they connect to full classes. Rare or highly paranormal archetypes should be cleared with the GM.
Which archetype is best for a martial character?
Mind Smith, Thaumaturge, and Chronoskimmer are the cleanest martial picks. Psychic can also work if the martial has the Intelligence or Charisma to support occult casting and has room for casting actions.
Which archetype is best for a caster?
Psychic and Time Mage are the most natural caster picks. Sleepwalker and Pactbinder can also work if the campaign supports dream, pact, or occult social scenes.
Is Curse Maelstrom good?
It can be, but only in curse-heavy games. If the campaign rarely uses curses or misfortune effects, the archetype has too many dormant buttons.
Is Living Vessel too risky?
It can be. The mechanical survivability is attractive, but the archetype includes entity control and story pressure. Clear those expectations at session zero.
Should every Free Archetype game allow these?
No. Free Archetype makes the feat cost easier, but rarity and campaign tone still matter. The GM should decide which Dark Archive themes fit the game.
