Introduction
The Animist is not just a divine caster with spooky lighting. War of Immortals gives the class two separate spell engines: prepared divine spellcasting and apparition spellcasting. The first handles the dependable work. The second lets your attuned apparitions hand you spontaneous slots, apparition spells, and a vessel spell that can change your job for the day.
That split is the whole class. If you prepare like a Cleric and ignore the apparition side, the Animist feels underbuilt. If you chase apparition flavor and forget healing, protection, and condition response, the party starts wondering why the spirit medium cannot handle the obvious divine jobs.
Use this with the divine spell guide, focus spells guide, heightening guide, utility spell guide, combat spell guide, and rituals guide.

Animist Spellcasting Snapshot
| Feature | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared divine spellcasting ● | Daily healing, protection, condition response, detection, and divine utility. | Preparing only reactive medicine makes your turns feel late. |
| Apparition spellcasting ● | Spontaneous access to the spells granted by your attuned apparitions. | Apparition slots cannot cast your prepared Animist spells. |
| Apparition signature spells ● | Heighten apparition spells freely from appropriate apparition slots. | You still need the right apparition spell in your repertoire. |
| Vessel spells ● | Focus-spell identity, repeated encounter pressure, and spirit-specific tactics. | Sustained vessel spells tax your action economy every round. |
| Wisdom spell DCs ● | Keeps divine DCs, spell attacks, Religion, and class accuracy pointed in one direction. | Do not neglect Dexterity, Constitution, and defensive positioning. |
| Rituals ● | Downtime spiritual scenes, exorcism-adjacent stories, consecration, research, and campaign magic. | Rituals are not combat buttons. They need time, costs, and GM buy-in. |
| Spell items ● | Scrolls, wands, and staves cover narrow answers without clogging prepared slots. | The wrong staff is just expensive luggage with better branding. |
Hot Take: Animist is strongest when it feels like a prepared caster in the morning, a spontaneous caster in the fight, and a focus caster every time the table gives you ten minutes to breathe.

Best Spell Jobs
| Spell Job | Best Fit | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Healing and stabilization ● | Keeping allies standing, undoing bad tempo, and backing up Medicine. | Do not become the party's only plan for every injury. |
| Protection and mitigation ● | Boss fights, undead pressure, dangerous terrain, and action-efficient prevention. | Defensive spells are best before damage lands. Novel concept, apparently. |
| Condition response ● | Diseases, poisons, curses, fear, paralysis, and other fight-warping problems. | Many answers depend on rank and counteract math. Carry scroll backups. |
| Spirit, undead, and haunt utility ● | Haunted sites, divine mysteries, hazards, and Religion-heavy adventures. | Campaign-dependent. Great in the right story, decorative in the wrong one. |
| Area damage and terrain ● | Apparitions like Steward of Stone and Fire or Vanguard of Roaring Waters. | Friendly fire and positioning still exist. The spirits will not move your Fighter for you. |
| Stealth and misdirection ● | Impostor in Hidden Places, social infiltration, scouting, and occult-style problem solving. | Less impressive when the adventure is just bright rooms and honest doors. |
| Direct blasting from prepared divine slots ● | Backup damage and finishing clustered weak enemies. | Your apparition choices usually do this better than baseline divine prep. |
| Narrow ritual magic ● | Campaign-scale spiritual consequences and downtime. | Poor use in a table that skips downtime and mystery structure. |
Apparition Spell Packages
Apparition spells are the class's most important spell-selection lever. War of Immortals says you gain apparition spell slots and a repertoire from your attuned apparitions, and that spells outside the divine list still count as divine spells when cast this way. That is a big deal.
| Apparition | Best Spell Package | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Steward of Stone and Fire ● | Ignition, earth, fire, bursts, walls, terrain pressure, and high-rank disaster magic. | Excellent combat package, but subtlety left early and did not leave a note. |
| Custodian of Groves and Gardens ● | Tangle vine, protector tree, healing fields, plant control, peaceful magic, and restoration themes. | Best when the party values defensive terrain and renewable healing. |
| Witness to Ancient Battles ● | Shield, sure strike, enlarge, weapon magic, battle phantasms, and martial support. | Pushes the Animist toward weapon turns, so plan armor and actions honestly. |
| Echo of Lost Moments ● | Time magic, dispel magic, visions, retrocognition, and high-rank foresight. | Strong utility package, but some effects care heavily about GM scene design. |
| Vanguard of Roaring Waters ● | Water movement, hydraulic pressure, mist, waves, control water, and difficult terrain. | Terrain value depends on battle maps. Empty plains make water less smug. |
| Impostor in Hidden Places ● | Telekinetic hand, ill omen, invisibility, privacy, mislead, disappearance, and secrets. | Great in intrigue; less direct in slugfest combat. |
| Stalker in Darkened Boughs ● | Gouging claw, runic body, pest/animal/elemental form support, plant walls, and wild aggression. | Form magic needs action planning and a build that can survive close play. |
| Reveler in Lost Glee ● | Prestidigitation, colors, laughing fit, confusion, illusions, and mental chaos. | Mindless and mental-immune enemies are rude, but correct. |
| Lurker in Devouring Dark ● | Caustic blast, grim tendrils, acid, ice, water, tentacles, and implosion. | Check resistances and immunity before committing damage slots. |
| Monarch of the Fey Courts ● | Charm, food, enthrall, suggestion, dominate, dance, and fey social pressure. | Incapacitation, social limits, and enemy traits can make this swingy. |
| Crafter in the Vault ● | Crafting, Thievery, creation, repair, and temporary workshop utility. | Better when the campaign actually uses downtime, gear, repairs, and Crafting. |
Vessel Spell Rankings
Vessel spells are focus spells tied to your primary apparition. They heighten like focus spells, cost Focus Points, and often reward Sustain actions. That means the rating is not only about the effect. It is about whether you can afford to keep it alive while still casting, moving, Raising a Shield, using items, or supporting allies.
| Vessel Spell | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Garden of Healing ● | One-action sustained healing aura with party-wide attrition value. | The post-effect limiter means repeated recasting on the same allies is not free infinite healing. |
| Earth's Bile ● | Repeatable burst damage with fire, bludgeoning, and persistent fire pressure. | Reflex saves and fire resistance matter. Use Recall Knowledge. |
| River Carving Mountains ● | Speed boost, lesser cover against ranged attacks, movement, and temporary difficult terrain. | Needs positioning discipline to avoid making your own party grumpy. |
| Store Time ● | Bonus reaction access for Animist or apparition reactions. | Only shines if your build actually has reactions worth spending. |
| Embodiment of Battle ● | Martial weapon proficiency, attack/damage bonus, and Reactive Strike. | It penalizes spell attack modifiers and spell DCs, so do not pretend this is a normal casting stance. |
| Trickster's Mirrors ● | Defensive illusion layers that can soak attacks and punish nearby attackers. | Area effects can clear the mirrors. Keep expectations realistic. |
| Discomfiting Whispers ● | Short-range aura that pressures Will and punishes attack failure. | Five-foot emanation means you are playing close to danger. |
| Darkened Forest Form ● | Flexible form access through pest, animal, and later elemental forms. | Stronger on a build that planned for form play instead of wandering into melee by accident. |
| Devouring Dark Form ● | Tentacle reach, grapple pressure, and later aquatic/elemental form options. | Grapple plans need Athletics support and enemy-size awareness. |
| Nymph's Grace ● | Confusion aura that protects you from confused targets. | Incapacitation and Will saves make it matchup-sensitive. |
| Traveling Workshop ● | Crafting, Repair, tools, and exploration/downtime logistics. | Excellent in gear-heavy campaigns, much weaker in pure combat crawls. |
Hot Take: Garden of Healing and Earth's Bile are the easy buttons, but River Carving Mountains is the one that will make tactically sharp players smile. Movement plus terrain is how PF2e quietly breaks encounters without asking permission.
Cantrips And Low-Rank Priorities
Animist cantrips should cover the boring jobs because boring jobs happen every session. War of Immortals apparition entries also hand out cantrips like shield, tangle vine, ignition, telekinetic hand, caustic blast, rousing splash, prestidigitation, figment, and gouging claw through specific apparitions.
| Option | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Shield from Witness to Ancient Battles ● | A no-slot defensive turn when you need to survive near the fight. | Great cantrip, not a substitute for positioning. |
| Tangle vine packages ● | Control, reach annoyance, and plant-themed lockdown from garden/fey apparitions. | Less reliable when creatures have excellent mobility or resist the setup. |
| Ignition from Steward of Stone and Fire ● | Repeatable fire damage in a combat-oriented apparition package. | Damage type matters. Some enemies brought fire resistance because they read the room. |
| Telekinetic hand from Impostor in Hidden Places ● | Exploration, scouting, manipulation, and stealth scenes. | Not a combat plan by itself. |
| Detect Magic and Read Aura ● | Magical exploration, loot, hazards, and suspicious objects. | Coordinate with the party's other tradition skills. |
| Stabilize ● | Emergency no-slot triage when a creature is dying. | It does not replace actual healing. |
| Light ● | Dark dungeons, caves, and basic table sanity. | Can give away stealth if the party forgot what light does. |
| Daze and other Will pressure ● | Backup mental targeting. | Weak into mindless or high-Will enemies. |
For low-rank slots, prioritize the divine list's practical jobs: heal, harm when your build uses it, protection, emergency stabilization, condition response, and utility that answers the actual adventure. If you take Embodiment of the Balance, heal and harm enter your apparition repertoire, which gives your apparition slots an unusually clean backup plan.
Mid-Rank And High-Rank Planning
The higher you go, the more the Animist needs to stop preparing "nice to have" spells and start preparing encounter answers. Higher-rank magic should swing tempo, remove a serious problem, bypass an obstacle, protect the party before a boss turn, or answer a creature trait the party cannot otherwise beat.
| Rank Band | What To Prioritize | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ranks 1-2 ● | Healing, basic protection, low-rank control, utility, and apparition identity spells. | These are the slots you spend most often, so they need broad use. |
| Ranks 3-4 ● | Dispel magic from Echo, weapon and movement support, stronger condition answers, walls, and terrain. | The class starts becoming a problem solver instead of a themed medic. |
| Ranks 5-6 ● | Field healing, wall of stone, mislead, control water, phantasmal calamity, and form upgrades. | These ranks define what your apparition package is actually good at. |
| Ranks 7-8 ● | Retrocognition, true target, disappearance, earthquake, whirlpool, and high-impact utility. | Great effects, but overkill if the encounter does not need them. |
| Rank 9+ ● | Foresight, implosion, falling stars, wrathful storm, and other campaign-ending statements. | At this tier the main danger is wasting a huge slot on the wrong target. |
The practical test is simple: if a spell is great but narrow, buy or request it as a scroll. If a spell wins the kind of scene your GM runs every session, prepare it or get it through an apparition.
Daily Loadouts
| Day Type | Prepared Divine Side | Apparition Side |
|---|---|---|
| Haunted dungeon ● | Healing, protection, condition response, detection, Religion support, and scroll-based silver bullets. | Echo of Lost Moments, Impostor in Hidden Places, Custodian of Groves and Gardens, or Witness to Ancient Battles. |
| Wilderness crawl ● | Movement, terrain, light, recovery, animal/plant problem solving, and weather-aware utility. | Vanguard of Roaring Waters, Stalker in Darkened Boughs, Custodian of Groves and Gardens, or Steward of Stone and Fire. |
| Boss hunt ● | Buffs, protection, emergency healing, condition removal, and spells with useful success effects. | Witness to Ancient Battles, Steward of Stone and Fire, Echo of Lost Moments, or Lurker in Devouring Dark. |
| Intrigue session ● | Detection, truth-finding, restraint, communication, social support, and nonlethal control. | Impostor in Hidden Places, Monarch of the Fey Courts, Reveler in Lost Glee, or Echo of Lost Moments. |
| Gear-heavy expedition ● | Repair support, utility, exploration magic, consumable planning, and downtime spells. | Crafter in the Vault, Custodian of Groves and Gardens, or Vanguard of Roaring Waters. |
| Mythic arc ● | Research, defense, rituals, high-value recovery, and divine consequence tools. | Any apparition that matches the calling, omen, enemy type, or sacred site. |
Spell Items
GM Core treasure guidance makes spell items a real part of caster planning. Animists especially benefit because their prepared list is small enough that every narrow answer has an opportunity cost.
| Item | Animist Use | Related Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Scrolls ● | One-off condition answers, travel, detection, counteract tools, and rare divine utility. | Consumables |
| Wands ● | Repeated daily support spells that are useful often but not worth preparing every morning. | Staves and Wands |
| Staves ● | Extra casts around healing, protection, spirit themes, or utility packages. | Magic Items By Level |
| Alchemical items ● | Antidotes, elixirs, senses, mobility, and out-of-slot utility. | Alchemical Items |
| Worn items ● | Defensive bonuses, invested magic, and passive survival tools. | Worn and Invested Items |
Hot Take: The best Animist scroll is not the flashiest spell. It is the spell you are furious you did not prepare the one time the GM finally makes it matter.
Monster Matchups
Monster Core and Monster Core 2 make spell targeting matter. Use Recall Knowledge, then decide whether the day's spirits are the right spirits.
| Enemy Type | Animist Plan |
|---|---|
| Undead and spirits ● | Divine recovery, vitality pressure, Religion, protection, and spirit-facing utility are core strengths. |
| Fiends, celestials, monitors ● | Check sanctification, traits, resistances, social stakes, and Will/Fortitude gaps. |
| Constructs ● | Avoid leaning on mental, emotion, or spirit assumptions. Use terrain, physical effects, and item support. |
| Swarms and troops ● | Steward, Lurker, and Vanguard packages get better when area pressure matters. |
| Solo severe boss ● | Buff, protect, use spells with success effects, and avoid gambling the whole fight on one failed save. |
| Hazards and haunts ● | Bring Religion, Occultism, detection, rituals, and the hazards guide. |
GM Core Encounter And Adventure Notes
Animist spell advice changes with pacing. A one-fight day makes top slots and big apparition effects look better. A long dungeon rewards cantrips, focus spells, scrolls, Medicine, and careful prepared slots. A subsystem scene can make a low-rank utility spell more important than a damage spell.
| GM Pressure | Animist Response |
|---|---|
| Encounter building ● | Save ranked slots for severe fights, clustered enemies, and dangerous turn swings. |
| Adjusting encounters ● | If the party lacks another divine caster, increase scroll access or foreshadow conditions clearly. |
| Environment ● | Terrain, weather, light, water, plants, and vertical space can make apparitions feel alive. |
| Skill DCs ● | Religion and Lore checks should reveal enough for preparation to matter. |
| Treasure by level ● | Scrolls, wands, staves, and consumables should patch gaps, not duplicate the same spell job. |
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Preparing like a Cleric clone ● | Keep divine fundamentals, then let apparitions define the rest. |
| Ignoring apparition slots ● | Apparition spellcasting is half the class's spell economy. Use it. |
| Choosing apparitions only by theme ● | Theme matters, but the spell package and vessel spell decide table performance. |
| Sustaining too many effects ● | Track your turn: Cast, Sustain, move, item, and defensive actions cannot all happen at once. |
| Forgetting items ● | Scrolls and wands should hold the narrow spells your prepared list cannot afford. |
| Skipping Recall Knowledge ● | Learn the enemy's traits and likely defenses before spending the important slot. |
Best Party Pairings
| Ally | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Fighter ● | Turns buffs, protection, and forced movement into immediate martial value. |
| Champion ● | Reduces defensive pressure so the Animist can use apparition tools more aggressively. |
| Rogue ● | Loves concealment, control, positioning, and Recall Knowledge support. |
| Alchemist ● | Covers consumable utility so divine slots stay available for harder problems. |
| Bard ● | Adds occult support, compositions, social magic, and Will pressure. |
| Wizard ● | Lets the Animist stop pretending divine casting should solve every arcane utility problem. |
Hot Takes
Animist is a spellcaster for players who like preparation but hate being locked into one script. If that sounds contradictory, good. The class is built on contradiction: prepared and spontaneous, divine and apparition-granted, healer and battlefield weirdness, holy medium and problem-solver in a borrowed cloak.
The strongest Animist spell list is usually not the one with the most damage. It is the one that lets the prepared divine side handle safety while the apparition side creates today's unfair advantage.
