Introduction
Crafting is the Intelligence skill for making, repairing, understanding, and valuing things. In a campaign with shields, alchemy, formulas, snares, workshops, settlement limits, or downtime, Crafting can become a real party role. In a campaign that teleports from fight to fight and treats shops as infinite vending machines, it mostly sits there holding a hammer and judging everyone.
That is the first rule of Crafting: it is not weak or strong in a vacuum. It is strong when the table lets items matter.

What Crafting Does
| Crafting Use | Best Fit | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Repair ● | Shields, damaged weapons, broken tools, construct-adjacent stories, and parties that use item durability | You need a repair toolkit, 10 minutes by default, and destroyed items cannot be repaired. |
| Craft ● | Downtime item access, formulas, common gear, consumables, ammunition, and campaigns with settlement limits | You must meet item level, access, tool, material, and sometimes workshop requirements. |
| Identify Alchemy ● | Potions, elixirs, bombs, mutagens, poisons, and alchemical loot | It needs an alchemist's toolkit and 10 minutes unless another option speeds it up. |
| Earn Income ● | Downtime in settlements, crafting work, professional identity, and between-adventure pacing | The GM sets available task levels. A village is not obligated to bankroll legendary engineering. |
| Recall Knowledge ● | Alchemical reactions, item value, engineering, unusual materials, constructs, and mechanical creatures | The GM decides when Crafting applies instead of Arcana, Society, or another knowledge skill. |
| Magic item support ● | Magical Crafting, runes, worn items, staves, wands, and scroll-heavy parties | Requires the right feats, access, formulas, money, and downtime. |
| Snare support ● | Trap-focused characters, kobolds, wilderness ambushes, and defensive play | Excellent in the right campaign, much quieter in open-field boss fights. |
Crafting Jobs Ranked
| Job | Why It Matters | Best Users |
|---|---|---|
| Shield maintenance ● | Shield Block converts hits into item damage, so fast repair keeps defensive characters functional across the day. | Champion, Fighter, Guardian, shield users |
| Alchemical literacy ● | Identifying and creating alchemical items turns loot and consumables into tactical answers instead of mystery bottles. | Alchemist, Investigator, poison users, support characters |
| Downtime item access ● | Crafting lets a party pursue specific gear when a settlement cannot or will not simply sell it. | Item planners, rune users, magic item crafters |
| Formula management ● | A formula can reduce Craft setup time and can unlock uncommon or rarer items when the GM makes it available. | Alchemist, Inventor, item crafters |
| Item and construct knowledge ● | Crafting is a strong Recall Knowledge skill for engineered problems, strange materials, alchemical reactions, and constructs. | Wizard, Investigator, high-Intelligence characters |
| Earn Income ● | Reliable downtime money is useful, especially when the campaign measures weeks and settlement work. | Downtime-heavy campaigns |
| Snares ● | Prepared terrain and ambush play can make snares nasty. Improvised encounters do not always give them room. | Kobolds, Ranger, Scrounger and snare builds |

Best Characters For Crafting
| Character | Why It Works | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Alchemist ● | Player Core 2 Alchemist is built around formulas, alchemical item access, infused alchemy, versatile vials, Quick Alchemy, and item identification. | Alchemist uses class features for many daily items, so do not confuse Advanced Alchemy with ordinary downtime Craft. |
| Inventor ● | Crafting is the obvious skill for a technology-minded character, gear repair, devices, gadgets, and invention-flavored problem solving. | The class leans on source material outside Player Core and GM Core, so confirm allowed books before building around it. |
| Champion ● | Shields, armor, defensive items, and repairs make Crafting practical even without a high Intelligence obsession. | You may prefer someone else to own the full Crafting investment if your ability boosts are strained. |
| Fighter ● | Weapon traits, shields, runes, armor, and repaired gear all matter to Fighters. | Fighters often have better things to do than become the party accountant. Keep the role focused. |
| Guardian ● | Defensive gear and shield-centered play make repair support valuable. | You still need enough skill investment for the checks to land. |
| Investigator ● | High Intelligence and alchemical or forensic angles make Crafting useful for clues, items, and strange devices. | Medicine, Society, and knowledge skills compete hard for the same attention. |
| Wizard ● | High Intelligence, magic items, scrolls, staves, wands, and formulas all fit a careful Crafting build. | Spell preparation and tradition skills may matter more if the campaign has little downtime. |
| Ranger ● | Snares, ammunition, field repairs, and wilderness gear can make Crafting worth a look. | Stronger when the campaign supports traps, hunting, and prepared ground. |
Best Crafting Skill Feats
| Feat | Why It Matters | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Repair ● | Repair drops from 10 minutes to 1 minute, then becomes 3 actions at master and 1 action at legendary. Shield users love this. | It is only great if item damage, shields, or damaged tools actually show up. |
| Alchemical Crafting ● | Lets trained Crafting users create alchemical items and starts them with common 1st-level formulas. | Strongest for parties that actively use bombs, elixirs, antidotes, antiplagues, mutagens, and poisons. |
| Magical Crafting ● | Opens the door to crafting magic items, which matters for runes, worn items, and item-access campaigns. | Needs downtime, money, formulas, and GM permission. Without those, it is a beautiful locked door. |
| Specialty Crafting ● | Adds a circumstance bonus within a chosen specialty, improving the exact type of Crafting you expect to repeat. | Pick a specialty that the campaign will actually use. Alchemy requires Alchemical Crafting. |
| Crafter's Appraisal ● | Player Core 2 lets Crafting identify magic items, giving gear specialists a clean information role. | It applies to magic items, not every magical effect, location, or weird problem. |
| Snare Crafting ● | Lets you craft snares, including quick one-minute snare creation by paying the listed cost. | Great with terrain control, kobolds, wilderness ambushes, and prepared defenses. Weak when fights begin in blank rooms. |
| Improvise Tool ● | Player Core 2 lets you attempt Repair without a repair toolkit and craft basic tools without formulas. | Excellent survival utility, but not a replacement for real kits and workshops. |
| Rapid Affixture ● | Master Crafting can make talisman use less annoying by reducing affix time. | Stronger in talisman-heavy parties; otherwise easy to skip. |
| Signature Crafting ● | Player Core 2 adds flavorful magic item quirks for items you create. | Fun and memorable, but not a raw-power staple. |
Player Core 2 Additions
Player Core 2 makes Crafting more visible without making every character into a full-time artisan. The biggest change is class context: Alchemist now puts formulas, advanced alchemy, versatile vials, and Quick Alchemy on the table constantly. Crafting is not just downtime for that class; it is the language of the class.
The book also adds several useful Crafting feats. Crafter's Appraisal gives a trained Crafting user a magic-item identification route. Improvise Tool helps when the party is missing a kit or needs basic gear. Snare Crafting supports trap-based play. Rapid Affixture supports talisman users. Signature Crafting is more about memorable created magic items than strict optimization, but that still matters in campaigns where gear has history.
Archetypes widen the use cases. Alchemist Dedication supports characters who want alchemical items without being full Alchemists. Poisoner supports poison-focused consumables. Herbalist can use Nature for healing-trait alchemical consumables, which is a useful reminder that Crafting is not the only route into every item niche. Scrounger is the survivalist answer: fewer tools, fewer formula-book headaches, and better emergency improvisation.
Ancestries can also matter. Ratfolk have repair-friendly options. Kobolds lean toward snares. Hobgoblins have alchemical ancestry support. None of that means "you must be this ancestry to craft." It means the best Crafting builds usually stack a class reason, an ancestry reason, and a campaign reason.
Equipment That Makes Crafting Better
| Equipment Choice | Why It Matters | Related Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Repair toolkit ● | Required for Repair, and a superb repair toolkit gives an item bonus. | Adventuring Gear and Tools |
| Alchemist's toolkit and lab ● | Identify Alchemy uses the toolkit, while downtime alchemical Crafting calls for lab support. | Alchemical Items |
| Shields ● | Shield Block makes item HP and Repair rules matter all day. | Shields and Shield Block |
| Formulas ● | Reduce Craft setup time and can unlock items beyond normal common access. | Equipment Hub |
| Runes ● | Magic weapon and armor improvements are a common reason to care about item access and Magical Crafting. | Runes |
| Consumables ● | Consumables and nonmagical ammunition can be crafted in batches, making downtime more efficient. | Consumables |
| Talismans ● | Rapid Affixture and talisman-heavy play make Crafting smoother for parties that remember talismans exist. | Worn and Invested Items |
| Gadgets and firearms ● | Technology-heavy campaigns make Crafting more important for access, repair, ammunition, and understanding devices. | Gadgets, Firearms |
GM Advice
Crafting works when the GM treats items like part of the campaign structure. GM Core supports level-based DCs for Craft and Repair, rarity adjustments, settlement-based Earn Income opportunities, item access, and treasure-by-level expectations. That gives the GM enough structure to say yes without letting Crafting become a money printer.
For Craft, use the item's level as the backbone of the DC and adjust for rarity or unusual circumstances. A character who has made the item before might deserve an easier DC. A bizarre, rare, cursed, or ancient item might be harder. Repair usually uses a similar item-level DC, but repairing something far beyond what the character can craft can reasonably be harder.
For Earn Income, do not assume every town has top-tier work. A village might offer low-level repair and trade tasks. A city can support better work. A major magical, military, or industrial center can justify higher-level jobs. This is not punishment; it is world texture with math attached.
For treasure, be careful. Crafting should reward investment, but it should not erase treasure pacing. The healthier version is simple: let formulas, materials, commissions, damaged gear, rare workshops, and special item access become adventure rewards. The player gets agency, and the campaign does not turn into "we stayed home for six months and bought the plot."
Use GM skill check DCs, treasure by level, technology in campaigns, hazards, and subsystems when Crafting becomes more than a single downtime roll.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Taking Crafting with no table support | Ask whether the campaign has downtime, formulas, shops with limits, repair pressure, item damage, or gear projects. |
| Forgetting tools | Repair, Identify Alchemy, and many Craft projects require the right kit, lab, workshop, or materials. |
| Treating Advanced Alchemy like normal Craft | Alchemist class features create infused alchemical items under their own rules. Downtime Craft is a separate activity. |
| Ignoring formulas | Formulas reduce setup time and can open uncommon or rarer item access. They are excellent treasure. |
| Expecting Crafting to beat adventuring wealth | Crafting can reduce final costs with downtime, but adventuring is still intentionally more lucrative. |
| Waiting until the shield is destroyed | Broken items can be repaired; destroyed items cannot. Repair before the shield becomes an expensive memory. |
Hot Takes
Crafting is not a shopping discount. It is item agency.
Quick Repair is the reason shield builds do not have to spend every break staring sadly at splinters.
Alchemical Crafting is much better when the whole party agrees to actually use consumables. A formula book nobody opens is just expensive stationery.
The GM decides whether Crafting is a pillar or a hobby. If the campaign never has time, tools, formula rewards, repairs, or item access problems, do not blame the skill for sitting quietly in the corner.
