Introduction
Inventor is the Guns & Gears Remastered class for impossible machines, powered armor, construct companions, weapon prototypes, gadgets, Overdrive, and the kind of science that makes the GM quietly check the hazard rules.

This guide ranks the innovation paths, explains Overdrive and unstable actions, compares armor, construct, weapon, gadget, and unstable feat lanes, and recommends gear that actually supports the class. Use it with the Inventor feat guide, Crafting guide, gadgets guide, runes guide, technology campaigns guide, and Guns & Gears archetypes.
Hot Take: Inventor is not "the gadget class." It is a martial class whose best feature is knowing exactly which problem its machine solves.
Disclaimer
This guide ranks and explains Inventor options without replacing Guns & Gears Remastered. It summarizes innovation paths, feat lanes, gear priorities, and campaign fit, but it does not reproduce full class rules, feat text, item entries, companion statistics, vehicle rules, or source-book tables.
Ratings assume a campaign where the GM allows Inventor access, Crafting gets table time, and technology is more than wallpaper. If every adventure is a flat room with no objects, hazards, machines, downtime, or weird materials, Inventor still works, but the class is paying for a toolbox the campaign keeps confiscating.

Inventor is an Intelligence martial. That does not mean Intelligence replaces weapon math. It means the class spends Intelligence on Overdrive, Crafting, class DCs, knowledge, gadgets, repairs, and technical problem solving while still needing a real combat plan.
Core Class Features Ranked
| Feature | Why |
|---|---|
| Innovation ● | Armor, construct, or weapon innovation is the class identity and build fork. Everything else should support it. |
| Overdrive ● | A one-action Crafting check for minute-long Strike damage is the class's most repeated boost. It gets better as Crafting rank rises. |
| Explode ● | A scaling unstable area option. Strong when enemies cluster, risky when allies also enjoy standing nearby for reasons known only to them. |
| Peerless Inventor ● | Free Inventor skill feat reinforces the Crafting identity immediately. |
| Shield Block ● | Useful baseline defense, especially for armor or one-handed weapon builds. |
| Reconfigure and Complete Reconfiguration ● | Lets the class adapt modifications through downtime. Inventor is allowed to learn from bad decisions, which is more than some adventurers manage. |
| Breakthrough and Revolutionary Innovation ● | These are the big modification milestones that make the innovation feel like it is evolving. |
| Offensive Boost ● | Adds a damage rider tied to the innovation at level 9, with boost type chosen from options such as cold, fire, electricity, bludgeoning, slashing, piercing, or acid. |
| Churning Mind and Anvil's Hardness ● | Master Will and Fortitude upgrades with success-to-critical-success effects are strong defensive payoffs. |
| Infinite Invention ● | At level 19, daily preparation can rebuild or even change the innovation type. Very late, very wild, very Inventor. |
Innovations Ranked
| Rank | Innovation | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Weapon innovation ● | Reliable martial turns, damage-focused builds, trait engineering, and simpler action economy |
| 2 | Armor innovation ● | Defensive inventors, powered suits, mobility, resistances, and front-line problem solving |
| 3 | Construct innovation ● | Companion play, scouting, extra board presence, mounted concepts, and players who like minion management |

1. Weapon Innovation
Weapon innovation is the easiest Inventor to make work at a normal table. You choose a base simple or martial weapon, or an accessible advanced weapon with tradeoffs, then modify it with traits and later upgrades. It accepts fundamental and property runes like an ordinary weapon, but the innovation is uniquely yours.
Best weapon modification directions:
| Direction | Why |
|---|---|
| Simple weapon plus Complex Simplicity ● | Increasing the weapon damage die and adding traits is clean, reliable value. |
| Modular Head or Segmented Frame ● | Flexible damage type and concealment utility can matter in campaigns with resistances, social scenes, or inspections. |
| Entangling Form, Hampering Spikes, or Rope Shot ● | Adds combat maneuvers and control traits to the weapon plan. |
| Manifold Alloy or Impossible Alloy ● | Helps against supernatural weaknesses and material problems when those monsters appear. |
| Enhanced Damage or Deadly Strike ● | Clear late-game damage upgrades. |
| Omnirange Stabilizers ● | Excellent for ranged innovation builds that care about distance and range penalties. |
| Momentum Enhancer ● | Strong when agile or reload support fits the exact weapon. |
Weapon Inventor wants to read the weapons guide, weapon traits guide, ranged weapons guide, and runes guide before locking in a concept.
Hot Take: Weapon innovation is the "boring" pick only if reliable turns bore you. Reliable turns win fights.
2. Armor Innovation
Armor innovation makes the Inventor into a powered-suit character. Guns & Gears Remastered gives two baseline suits: power suit and subterfuge suit. Power suit leans heavier and stronger; subterfuge suit leans Dexterity and stealthier play.
Best armor directions:
| Direction | Why |
|---|---|
| Speed Boosters into Hyper Boosters ● | Speed is defense, offense, and encounter control. This is one of the cleanest armor lines. |
| Resistance modifications ● | Harmonic Oscillator, Metallic Reactance, Phlogistonic Regulator, Otherworldly Protection, and later resistance upgrades are great when they match campaign damage types. |
| Heavy Construction ● | Strong for power suit builds that can meet the Strength expectation. |
| Subtle Dampeners ● | Good for stealthy armor concepts, especially if the table uses infiltration. |
| Soaring Armor ● | Flight on an armor innovation is a major tactical milestone. |
| Perfect Fortification ● | Strong defensive flavor for power suit builds, but arrives late. |
| Multisensory Mask ● | Excellent defensive utility for subterfuge suit builds, with action and hostile-action caveats. |
Armor Inventor is not automatically a Champion or Guardian. You are tougher than many inventors, but you still need positioning, shields, healing, and armor runes.
Hot Take: Armor innovation is best when it moves you to the right square, not when it convinces you to stand in the wrong one.
3. Construct Innovation
Construct innovation gives you a prototype construct companion. It is a minion, normally gaining 2 actions when you Command it, and you can spend 2 actions to Command it for a bigger programmed turn. Your Overdrive also benefits the construct, and unstable actions can be taken by the construct when the feat allows it.
Best construct directions:
| Direction | Why |
|---|---|
| Accelerated Mobility ● | Speed makes the companion easier to use and less likely to waste commanded actions. |
| Sensory Array ● | Low-light vision, darkvision, and tremorsense help scouting and monster detection. |
| Projectile Launcher ● | Gives a ranged option, later improved by Turret Configuration. |
| Manual Dexterity ● | Useful for exploration and object interaction, subject to companion item limits. |
| Advanced, Incredible, and Paragon Construct Companion ● | Required if the construct is supposed to remain a central combat piece. |
| Lock On ● | Strong when the construct's Strike is important and you can afford the setup. |
| Flight Chassis ● | Late-game flight changes board control. |
| Runic Keystone ● | Lets the construct hold a property rune, with restrictions. |
Construct is the most table-management-heavy innovation. It gives you board presence, but it also asks for Command actions, positioning, repairs, and monster-awareness. If the group already plays slowly, adding a pet machine with a legal department may not improve the evening.
Hot Take: Construct innovation is only "free action economy" if you stop reading before the word Command.
Overdrive Explained
Overdrive is a one-action inventor activity used once per round. You attempt a Crafting check against the standard DC for your level.
| Result | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Critical success | Critical Overdrive: your Strikes add your full Intelligence modifier as damage for 1 minute. After it ends, you cannot use Overdrive for 1 minute. |
| Success | Your Strikes add half your Intelligence modifier as damage for 1 minute. |
| Failure | Your Strikes still add 1 fire damage. Not good, but not wasted completely. |
| Critical failure | You take fire damage equal to half your level, and Overdrive locks out for 1d4 rounds. |
Expert, master, and legendary Overdrive improve the successful Overdrive damage bonus and automatically improve Crafting rank as part of the class progression. You can use Overdrive again while already in Overdrive to try to upgrade to critical Overdrive, but a critical failure ends the current Overdrive.
Overdrive is best when:
| Situation | Use it? |
|---|---|
| Fight will last several rounds | Yes. Turn it on early. |
| You can attack repeatedly with the innovation or construct | Yes. It pays back faster. |
| You are already winning a one-round cleanup | Maybe not. Spend the action ending the fight. |
| You are about to use mostly non-Strike actions | Delay it. Overdrive wants Strikes. |
Unstable Actions Explained
Unstable actions are experimental pushes beyond safe limits. After resolving one, you attempt a DC 15 flat check, or DC 13 if legendary in Crafting. On failure, the innovation cannot use more unstable actions until you spend 10 minutes retuning it. On critical failure, you also take fire damage equal to half your level, or the minion takes it if the unstable action was performed by your construct innovation.
| Unstable tool | Best use |
|---|---|
| Explode ● | Enemy clusters, swarm-style pressure, and moments where a small emanation catches multiple foes. |
| Explosive Leap ● | Mobility, vertical play, and escaping bad squares. |
| Searing Restoration ● | Emergency healing from the "explosions can heal" school of medicine. Somehow. |
| Megaton Strike unstable function ● | Big single-target hit when the Strike matters. |
| Megavolt unstable function ● | Large line damage when the battlefield lines up. |
| Deep Freeze unstable function ● | Cone control and cold damage when enemy positioning cooperates. |
| Clockwork Celerity ● | Quickened-for-a-turn is excellent because action pressure is the class's main headache. |
| Unstable Redundancies ● | Automatic success on an unstable flat check once per setup cycle makes risk management much cleaner. |
| Negate Damage unstable function ● | Huge late-game armor defense when the damage is worth the unstable slot. |
Hot Take: Unstable actions should be spent like limited spells, not like party tricks. If nobody at the table would remember the moment, maybe keep the machine intact.
Feat Paths Ranked
| Feat path | Best users | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon innovation path ● | Weapon Inventor | Dual-Form Weapon, Megaton Strike, Gigaton Strike, Explosive Maneuver, Devastating Weaponry, and damage modifications make this the cleanest martial lane. |
| Armor innovation path ● | Armor Inventor | Collapse Armor, Diving Armor, Electrify Armor, Soaring Armor, Negate Damage, and resistance modifications build the powered-suit fantasy. |
| Construct path ● | Construct Inventor | Advanced Construct Companion, Incredible Construct Companion, Paragon Companion, Construct Shell, Lock On, Engine of Destruction, and mobility/sense mods keep the minion relevant. |
| Unstable path ● | Most Inventors | Explosive Leap, Searing Restoration, Megaton Strike, Megavolt, Clockwork Celerity, Deep Freeze, and Unstable Redundancies create the class's best scene swings. |
| Gadget path ● | Prepared players and tech campaigns | Gadget Specialist, Ubiquitous Gadgets, and Contingency Gadgets are excellent when scouting, formulas, and item use matter. |
| Support path ● | Party-first Inventors | Overdrive Ally, Shared Overdrive, Helpful Tinkering, Lock On, and Ubiquitous Overdrive are strongest in coordinated groups. |
| Crafting utility path ● | Exploration-heavy campaigns | Built-In Tools, Reverse Engineer, Just the Thing!, and Crafting-based defense make the Inventor feel useful outside damage math. |
Key Feats By Level Band
| Level band | Picks to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Built-In Tools, Explosive Leap, Haphazard Repair, Tamper, Variable Core, Collapse Armor, Collapse Construct, Reverse Engineer, Searing Restoration | Establish utility, mobility, emergency repair, damage type, and early unstable use. |
| 4-6 | Advanced Construct Companion, Dual-Form Weapon, Gadget Specialist, Megaton Strike, Clockwork Celerity, Construct Shell, Megavolt, Visual Fidelity | This is where the build's main lane becomes obvious. |
| 8-12 | Gigaton Strike, Incredible Construct Companion, Manifold Modifications, Overdrive Ally, Ubiquitous Gadgets, Electrify Armor, Helpful Tinkering, Lock On, Contingency Gadgets, Deep Freeze, Shared Overdrive | Pick based on whether the character is damage, companion, suit, gadget, or support focused. |
| 14-20 | Paragon Companion, Soaring Armor, Unstable Redundancies, Just the Thing!, Persistent Boost, You Failed to Account For... This!, Devastating Weaponry, Engine of Destruction, Negate Damage, Full Automation, Ubiquitous Overdrive | High levels should make the innovation feel impossible, not merely busier. |
Action Economy
Inventor has real action pressure. That is not a flaw; it is the cost of doing weird machine things.
| Action demand | Who feels it most | How to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Overdrive | Everyone | Use early in fights that will last. Skip when the fight is basically over. |
| Command a construct | Construct Inventor | Plan turns around the construct, not after your own actions are already spent. |
| Megaton Strike and other 2-action attacks | Weapon and construct builds | Make sure the target and position justify the action spend. |
| Explode and area unstable actions | Everyone | Use when multiple enemies are caught and allies are not. Revolutionary size choices help later. |
| Gadgets and consumables | Gadget builds | Prepare for known problems; do not add item actions to already overloaded turns. |
| Shields, movement, and skill actions | Armor and melee builds | These are not optional if you are in the danger zone. |
Hot Take: The most important Inventor optimization is not a feat. It is admitting how many actions your cool turn actually costs.
Ability Scores
| Attribute | Notes |
|---|---|
| Intelligence ● | Key attribute, Crafting, Overdrive, class DC, technical skills, and the whole class identity. |
| Strength ● | Important for melee weapon Inventors, power suit builds, Athletics, and some armor plans. |
| Dexterity ● | Important for ranged weapon Inventors, subterfuge suit builds, Reflex, and initiative. |
| Constitution ● | Experiments explode, monsters hit back, and construct pilots still have Hit Points. |
| Wisdom ● | Perception starts only trained, and Will matters even with strong progression. |
| Charisma ● | Optional unless the character is a public genius, negotiator, intimidator, or gadget salesman with excellent hair. |
Ancestries And Heritages
Inventor is unusually ancestry-friendly because Intelligence, Crafting, senses, movement, durability, and item access all matter. Use the ancestry guide hub and heritage guide before locking the build.
| Ancestry or heritage direction | Best Inventors | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Automaton ● | Armor, construct, and flavor-first Inventors | Guns & Gears Remastered directly supports the living-construct fantasy, Arcana/Crafting identity, and body-modification theme. |
| Human ● | Any build | Flexible feat access and broad build support make human the reliable "I need this machine online now" ancestry. |
| Dwarf ● | Armor, melee weapon, durability builds | Toughness, strong craft fantasy, and Dongun Hold-style tech identity all fit heavy Inventors. |
| Goblin ● | Gadget, explosive, mobility, and comedy-with-consequences builds | Small, chaotic, and extremely on-brand for dangerous prototypes. Keep the jokes in the article, not in the safety manual. |
| Gnome ● | Gadget, utility, and weird-science Inventors | Strong theme for curiosity-driven problem solving, with enough oddness to justify most bad lab decisions. |
| Ratfolk ● | Gadget, urban, and technical scout builds | Great fit for clever item users, cramped spaces, and "I have a tool for that" adventuring. |
| Kobold ● | Trap, gadget, and construct-adjacent builds | Works well when the campaign rewards preparation, tunnels, devices, and scrappy engineering. |
| Elf or Leshy ● | Ranged, mobility, or nature-tech concepts | Good when the build has a specific movement, perception, or theme reason. Less automatic than Automaton or Human. |
| Versatile heritages ● | Any build with a specific missing piece | Use these to patch senses, mobility, durability, innate magic, or story identity. Do not pick one only because the character sheet had an empty aesthetic slot. |
Hot Take: Automaton Inventor is obvious, but obvious is not the same as bad. Sometimes the best pitch really is "ancient soul in a machine building a smaller, worse machine that explodes on command."
Skills
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Crafting ● | Mandatory identity skill. Drives Overdrive, repairs, reverse engineering, gadgets, and technical scenes. |
| Arcana ● | Good for magical technology, constructs, and weird devices. |
| Society ● | Urban invention, technology access, guilds, patrons, laws, and academia. |
| Thievery ● | Devices, locks, traps, and technical infiltration. Reverse Engineer can shift some device work to Crafting. |
| Athletics ● | Power suit, melee, Shove, Trip, climbing, and battlefield work. |
| Medicine ● | Pairs well with technical support and Searing Restoration. |
| Nature ● | Useful when the invention interacts with beasts, terrain, or wilderness travel. |
| Stealth ● | Stronger for subterfuge suit, scouting, gadget, and ranged builds. |
Backgrounds
Guns & Gears Remastered includes gear-facing background support, but any background can work if it supports the table role. Prioritize Crafting, technology access, exploration utility, or the skill your innovation actually uses.
| Background direction | Best users | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tinker, artisan, engineer, mechanic, clockworker, or inventor-style background ● | Almost everyone | Reinforces Crafting, tools, repairs, and the basic reason the character can keep an innovation alive. |
| Academy, scholar, Brighite, arcane technician, or researcher background ● | Gadget, construct, and lore-heavy builds | Supports Arcana, Society, and technical knowledge in campaigns with labs, guilds, or weird devices. |
| Soldier, siege engineer, guard, caravan engineer, or militia background ● | Armor and weapon Inventors | Helps ground a combat Inventor in real battlefield problems instead of pure lab theory. |
| Trapsmith, locksmith, smuggler, spy, or undercity fixer background ● | Gadget, subterfuge suit, and Thievery builds | Strong when the campaign uses hazards, locks, infiltrations, and illegal machinery. |
| Medic, field surgeon, alchemical assistant, or rescue worker background ● | Support Inventors | Pairs well with Medicine, Searing Restoration, repairs, and the idea that not every machine is built to kill someone. |
| Driver, sailor, pilot, mechanic, or vehicle crew background ● | Vehicle and travel campaigns | Excellent if vehicles matter, nearly invisible if the whole campaign fits in a tavern basement. |
Hot Take: The best Inventor background answers one practical question: who taught you to fix the thing after it caught fire the first time?
Equipment Recommendations
| Equipment | Notes |
|---|---|
| Innovation runes ● | Weapon innovations need weapon potency, striking, and property runes. Armor innovations need armor potency, resilient, and property runes. |
| Repair kit ● | You are an Inventor. Own the kit. Use the kit. Love the kit. |
| Crafting tools and specialty kits ● | Built-In Tools can integrate toolkits into the innovation for fast access. |
| Backup weapon ● | Weapon innovation users especially should have an answer if disarmed, separated, or socially disallowed. |
| Shield ● | You get Shield Block, and some Inventors can use the extra defense. |
| Gadgets ● | Best when the campaign has exploration, hazards, vehicles, scouting, or tech access. |
| Consumables ● | Alchemical items, scrolls through allies, talismans, and utility consumables give the technical character more answers. |
| Worn invested items ● | Defensive, mobility, and skill-boosting items matter because the class is not protected by genius alone. |
| Vehicles and siege gear ● | Excellent in the right campaign, dead weight in a dungeon hallway. |
Use the equipment hub, adventuring gear guide, gadgets guide, consumables guide, magic items by level guide, worn invested items guide, and siege weapons and battle vehicles guide when planning treasure.
Archetypes
| Archetype direction | Notes |
|---|---|
| Guns & Gears archetypes ● | Inventor multiclass, Overwatch, Sterling Dynamo, Trapsmith, Trick Driver, and Vehicle Mechanic all fit technology campaigns. |
| Free Archetype ● | Excellent for Inventor because the class wants many side tools without losing innovation feats. |
| Martial archetypes ● | Good for weapon and armor Inventors that need better combat texture. |
| Caster archetypes for martials ● | Useful for utility, but watch action pressure and attribute spread. |
| Multiclass archetypes ● | Alchemist, Fighter, Rogue, Ranger, Wizard, and Investigator directions can all work depending on concept. |
Sterling Dynamo is especially thematic for body-tech concepts. Trapsmith and Vehicle Mechanic are campaign archetypes: excellent when the adventure has terrain, prep time, chases, repairs, and machines; sad when the campaign is 200 locked rooms and one hallway.
Monster Core Matchups
Use Monster Core to plan the problems your machine must solve.
| Monster problem | Inventor answer |
|---|---|
| High AC boss | Overdrive, Aid, accuracy setup, Megaton Strike only when the hit chance justifies the action. |
| Physical resistance | Offensive Boost damage type, Variable Core, Boost Modulation, alchemical tools, and party Recall Knowledge. |
| Energy resistance or immunity | Do not marry one damage type. The honeymoon ends when the fire monster arrives. |
| Flying enemies | Ranged weapon innovation, Soaring Armor, Flight Chassis, gadgets, or party support. |
| Swarms or clusters | Explode, Megavolt, Deep Freeze, and other area tools can matter. |
| Construct or object-heavy enemies | Crafting, Repair, Disable a Device, and technical knowledge should get spotlight time. |
| Grabby melee brutes | Armor mobility, Explosive Leap, construct positioning, shields, and defensive consumables. |
Read the creature traits guide, stat block guide, and encounter use guide if you want the Inventor to feel prepared rather than surprised by every monster body type.
GM Core Table Fit
Inventor depends heavily on the campaign recognizing machines, materials, repairs, hazards, formulas, and downtime. The GM Core side should answer these questions before play:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the Inventor class common, regional, uncommon, or story-gated? | Guns & Gears Remastered ties technology access to setting assumptions. |
| Will Crafting, repairs, reverse engineering, and downtime matter? | The class loses texture when every problem is only a monster. |
| Are gadgets, formulas, workshops, and special materials available? | Gadget and modification paths need supply support. |
| Will encounters include objects, hazards, vehicles, doors, bridges, and terrain? | Inventors are better when the world has things to tinker with. |
| How often can destroyed innovations or construct companions be rebuilt? | The source gives downtime rebuilding procedures; the campaign pace determines how painful destruction feels. |
Use treasure by level, hazards, environment, skill check DCs, subsystems, and session zero to make the class feel integrated.
Hot Take: If the GM never gives the Inventor objects, machines, downtime, gadgets, or technical problems, the campaign has not banned the class, but it has quietly hidden half of it in a drawer.
Sample Builds
| Build | Innovation | Key choices | Plays like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reliable Weapon Engineer | Weapon | Complex Simplicity or trait mods, Megaton Strike, Overdrive, strong runes | Straightforward martial with technical damage and control tricks. |
| Powered Defender | Armor | Power suit, Speed Boosters or resistance mods, shield, Soaring Armor, Negate Damage | Durable skirmisher who survives through movement, armor, and late-game defenses. |
| Subterfuge Technician | Armor | Subterfuge suit, Subtle Dampeners, Stealth, Visual Fidelity, gadgets | Infiltration and utility inventor with a defensive suit. |
| Clockwork Handler | Construct | Accelerated Mobility, Sensory Array, Advanced/Incredible/Paragon companion, Lock On | Tactical minion play with scouting and extra board presence. |
| Gadget Problem Solver | Any | Gadget Specialist, Ubiquitous Gadgets, Contingency Gadgets, Just the Thing! | Prepared utility character who turns foreknowledge into answers. |
| Unstable Demolitionist | Weapon or armor | Explode, Variable Core, Megavolt, Deep Freeze, Unstable Redundancies | Burst and area effects, best when the player tracks risk carefully. |
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| Choosing innovation by flavor only | The innovation decides your action economy. Flavor comes free after the turn works. |
| Ignoring Crafting | Overdrive, repairs, gadgets, and many class tricks all point at Crafting. |
| Spending unstable actions on tiny value | Risk should buy a meaningful swing. |
| Treating the construct as free | It needs Command actions, positioning, repairs, and feat support. |
| Forgetting runes | Innovation is special, but math is still math. |
| Taking too many gadget tricks | Gadgets are tools, not a second full class stapled to your turn. |
| Dumping defenses | Smart characters still fail saves and get hit by clubs. |
Hot Takes
- Inventor is not a spellcaster in a lab coat. It is a martial with a machine, Crafting pressure, and enough unstable buttons to make caution look like a class feature.
- Weapon innovation is the best default because it asks the fewest extra actions. That is not boring. That is the sound of the turn working.
- Construct innovation is the coolest option and the easiest one to slow the table down with. Know your companion rules before initiative, not during it.
- Armor innovation should be judged by movement and survival, not by whether the suit makes you feel like a Champion. It does not.
- Gadgets are strongest when the party scouts and plans. If every door opens directly into initiative, gadget value drops like a wrench off an airship.
- Overdrive is good, but it is not an excuse to ignore accuracy, runes, or positioning. Genius still misses on a bad attack roll.
Final Verdict
Inventor is one of PF2e's best classes for players who like technical decisions and campaign texture. Weapon innovation is the strongest default because it is easiest to run well. Armor innovation is excellent when mobility, defense, and powered-suit identity matter. Construct innovation is the coolest board-presence option, but it asks for the most actions and attention.
Best default: weapon innovation.
Best defensive build: armor innovation with mobility.
Best flavor ceiling: construct innovation.
Best feat lane: unstable actions supported by a clear innovation plan.
Best warning label: do not build an Inventor for a campaign where nobody wants Crafting, gadgets, downtime, machines, or object interaction to matter.
