The short answer

Automatons are rare construct-bodied PF2e people from Guns & Gears Remastered, built around a living soul-core rather than blanket construct immunities. Choose Mage, Warrior, Hunter, or Sharpshooter for the class role, then plan enhancement feats around augmentation payoffs and the campaign's technology or Jistka context.

Introduction

Automatons are rare construct-bodied people from Guns & Gears. They were created to preserve living souls inside magical-mechanical bodies, most famously as part of the Jistka Imperium's desperate final engineering project. That is the hook. Automaton is not "robot ancestry." It is a personhood ancestry about memory, purpose, old empires, magical engineering, and the question of what still counts as you after the body is rebuilt.

Mechanically, Automaton gives you a durable 8 HP ancestry chassis, Medium or Small size, 25-foot Speed, low-light vision, the Automaton and Construct traits, and a living soul-core that changes how the construct premise works. You do not get to walk into the campaign immune to half the game because you are metal. You are still a living creature in the ways that matter for healing, dying, and story.

Use this guide with the main ancestry hub, heritage guide, classes hub, Crafting, Arcana, construct creature traits, equipment, and technology campaigns.

An Automaton repairs an ancient soul-core in a Jistkan workshop

Quick Rating

CategoryNotes
Overall strength ●Strong chassis and feat lines, but rare access and campaign tone matter.
New-player friendliness ●Mechanically manageable, but the story premise asks for more table buy-in.
Optimization ceiling ●Enhancement feats, integrated gear, core power, and movement options scale well.
Campaign dependence ●Better in ruins, technology, construct, planar, or ancient-empire campaigns.
Flavor-to-mechanics match ●The body, core, memory, and enhancement mechanics all support the fiction.

Hot Take: Automaton's rules are manageable. The demanding part is that a walking ancient soul-engine makes the GM's setting answer questions it might have been dodging.

Core Identity

Guns & Gears gives Automatons three major pillars.

PillarWhat It Means In Play
Living constructYou have a constructed body, but the core houses your soul and life energy. You recover like a living creature and do not have default construct immunities.
Ancient purposeMost Automatons are tied to Jistka, the Artificer Conclave, lost magitechnology, or rare modern attempts to recreate the process.
Modular bodyHeritages and ancestry feats make the body do things: aim, cast, fight, fly, resist magic, integrate weapons, teleport, or become a cannon.

That means the best Automaton characters answer three questions before session one:

QuestionWhy It Matters
Who were you before the body?Defines memory, class, background, and the emotional cost of immortality.
What was your body made to do?Points directly to heritage and ancestry feats.
Who wants your core?Gives the GM a villain, patron, scholar, faction, or moral problem.

Heritage Rankings

HeritageBest ForWhy
Mage Automaton ●Wizards, Bards, Witches, Psychics, Thaumaturges, arcane skill buildsA free arcane cantrip is broadly useful and makes the core feel magical from level 1.
Warrior Automaton ●Fighters, Champions, Monks, Guardians, Barbarians, Athletics buildsBetter fist damage and lethal unarmed attacks make the body matter immediately.
Hunter Automaton ●Rangers, Rogues, Scouts, Monks, free-hand skirmishersThe quadruped speed boost is good, but only when your hands are free and movement is part of the plan.
Sharpshooter Automaton ●Gunslingers, ranged Fighters, firearm or crossbow usersAutomaton Aim supports long-range attacks, but it competes with tight action economy.

Mage Automaton

Mage is the most flexible Automaton heritage because cantrips are useful across many builds. It is clean on Wizard, Bard, Psychic, and any character leaning into the "core as arcane engine" identity. It also sets up Core Attunement later.

This is the best heritage if you want the character's magic to come from the core instead of from a spellbook, bloodline, patron, or divine sponsor. Mechanically, it is simple. Thematically, it is loaded. That is a good deal.

Warrior Automaton

Warrior is the practical melee body. It improves your fist and lets your unarmed attacks work lethally without the usual awkwardness. That matters for Fighter, Monk, Champion, and Guardian concepts where the body itself is the weapon.

It also opens Arcane Slam, which rewards Athletics and grab/restrain setups. If your character was built as a siege body, duelist chassis, guardian frame, or punch-clock with fists, this is the obvious pick.

Hunter Automaton

Hunter is the scout body. It gives a movement edge when both hands are free, which points toward Ranger, Rogue, unarmed builds, and characters who do not need shields, two-handed weapons, or constant item juggling.

The warning is simple: this heritage asks you to keep hands free. If you keep drawing weapons, tools, bombs, scrolls, shields, and emotional support wands, the chassis will file a complaint.

Sharpshooter Automaton

Sharpshooter gives Automaton Aim, a ranged-action tool that helps with second and third range increments. It fits Gunslinger, ranged Fighter, firearm users, crossbow users, and long-range sentry concepts.

The drawback is action pressure. PF2e ranged builds already spend actions on reloads, movement, aiming, stances, and special shots. Automaton Aim is best when the map rewards distance enough to justify the action.

Ancestry Feat Rankings

Level 1 Feats

FeatBest Use
Automaton Lore ●Arcana, Crafting, and Automaton Lore are exactly the skill package this ancestry wants.
Arcane Eye ●Darkvision is a permanent scouting upgrade, and the enhancement adds an excellent anti-invisibility tool.
Reinforced Chassis ●Strong if your armor plan can commit to built-in plating and rune support.
Energy Beam ●A ranged unarmed fire option from the core; best when the build wants a backup ranged attack or core-blaster identity.
Automaton Armament ●Good for body-weapon builds, especially claws for finesse/agile or pincers for grapple flavor.
Arcane Communication ●Excellent flavor and useful stealth/social utility, but short-range until enhanced.

Level 5 Feats

FeatBest Use
Arcane Safeguards ●Reaction-based magical defense is broadly useful, especially in caster-heavy campaigns.
Integrated Armament ●Excellent for weapon or shield characters who want gear literally built into the body.
Magical Resistance ●Good when the chosen energy type is common in the campaign. Better with enhancement.

Level 9 Feats

FeatBest Use
Lesser Augmentation ●This is the Automaton scaling engine. It turns earlier enhancement text into useful build value and can be reconfigured with downtime.
Arcane Propulsion ●Temporary flight is good. Permanent flight through enhancement is a serious high-level payoff.
Core Attunement ●Mage Automaton gets innate spell expansion. Great for arcane utility and identity.
Rain of Bolts ●Sharpshooter area damage. Best when the build uses class DC or spell DC well.
Arcane Camouflage ●Hunter-only stealth magic. Strong for scouts, weaker if the campaign does not reward infiltration.
Arcane Slam ●Warrior-only Athletics payoff for grabbed or restrained targets. Good if the party helps set it up.

Level 13 Feats

FeatBest Use
Core Rejuvenation ●A once-per-day survival reset from your soul-core is a strong high-level ancestry feat.
Astral Blink ●Hourly translocation is excellent mobility and plays into planar-core weirdness.
Arcane Locomotion ●Climb or swim Speed is useful when the campaign map rewards it.
Enlarged Chassis ●Constant enlarge effects are powerful but come with size and space implications.

Level 17 Feats

FeatBest Use
Greater Augmentation ●More enhancement access keeps the Automaton body evolving into late game.
Core Cannon ●The dramatic core-blaster capstone. Immobility matters, but the fantasy is loud in the best way.
Axial Recall ●Strong planar story utility for Axis-linked Automatons, less useful in grounded campaigns.

Enhancement Planning

Automaton feats often include enhancement text that does nothing until you take augmentation feats such as Lesser Augmentation or Greater Augmentation. This is easy to miss. Do not evaluate the ancestry feat list as isolated picks. Evaluate it as a machine that unlocks upgrades later.

Build LaneEarly PickLater Payoff
Chassis tankReinforced ChassisChassis Deflection through enhancement, better armor rune plan, Core Rejuvenation later.
Arcane scoutArcane Eye, Arcane CommunicationDarkvision, improved message range, see the unseen, Astral Blink.
Core blasterEnergy BeamBigger beam die, Core Attunement if Mage, Core Cannon at 17.
Integrated weaponIntegrated ArmamentMore integrated weapons or shield options through enhancement.
Mage bodyMage Automaton, Automaton LoreCore Attunement, arcane skills, spell utility, technology scholarship.
Movement bodyHunter Automaton, Arcane PropulsionFlight, teleportation, climb or swim Speed.

Hot Take: Lesser Augmentation is where Automaton turns from a few body modifications into a connected ancestry engine. Skipping it can be correct, but understand what you give up.

Best Classes

Inventor ●

Inventor is the obvious theme fit. A machine-bodied character with an innovation, Crafting, repairs, gadgets, and personal technology is as clean as it gets. It also ties directly into the broader Guns & Gears ecosystem.

Best angles: Automaton Lore, Integrated Armament, Reinforced Chassis, technology backgrounds, Sterling Dynamo or other gear-facing archetypes if the campaign allows them.

Fighter ●

Fighter may be the best simple mechanical Automaton. Warrior Automaton, Reinforced Chassis, Integrated Armament, Arcane Slam, and Core Rejuvenation all fit a built-for-war body with elite accuracy.

Best angles: Warrior heritage, chassis tank, integrated shield or weapon, Athletics, battlefield relic.

Champion ●

Champion turns Automaton into a soul-bound protector. This is a strong story contrast: a construct body serving a moral oath, a god of invention, a planar ideal, or a promise made before memory faded.

Best angles: Reinforced Chassis, Integrated Armament shield, Core Rejuvenation, Brigh or other technology/magic faith, ancient guardian.

Gunslinger ●

Gunslinger works when firearms fit the campaign. Sharpshooter Automaton and Integrated Armament support the fantasy well, and Guns & Gears gives enough gear context to make it feel native rather than imported.

Best angles: Sharpshooter heritage, integrated firearm discussion with the GM, range-increment play, sentry frame, Alkenstar or Arcadian technology.

Wizard ●

Wizard is excellent for Mage Automaton. Arcane cantrips, Arcana, lost Jistkan knowledge, ancient memory fragments, and core-powered spells all line up.

Best angles: Mage heritage, Automaton Lore, Arcane Eye, Core Attunement, arcane spell guides.

Ranger and Rogue ●

Ranger and Rogue fit Hunter Automaton. The free-hands movement hook, scouting identity, stealth magic, and long-lived hunter body all work.

Best angles: Hunter heritage, Arcane Camouflage, Arcane Eye, Society or Survival depending on whether the character stalks ruins or wilderness.

Monk ●

Monk works because Automaton can make the body itself the weapon. Warrior Automaton and Automaton Armament both support unarmed identity, while movement feats can make the chassis feel supernatural.

Best angles: Warrior heritage, Energy Beam as backup range, Arcane Propulsion, Astral Blink.

Attributes and Skills

Automaton has a Strength boost and a free boost, but Remastered alternate ancestry boosts mean you can still support any class. Use the printed Strength direction when it helps; use alternate boosts when it does not.

BuildAttribute PrioritiesSkill Plan
Chassis FighterStrength, Constitution, Dexterity as armor allowsAthletics, Crafting, Intimidation
Mage Core WizardIntelligence, Constitution, DexterityArcana, Crafting, Society
Sharpshooter GunslingerDexterity, Constitution, WisdomCrafting, Acrobatics, Society
Hunter ScoutDexterity, Wisdom, ConstitutionStealth, Survival, Arcana
Sacred Construct ChampionStrength, Constitution, Charisma or WisdomAthletics, Religion, Crafting
Inventor RelicIntelligence, Dexterity or Strength, ConstitutionCrafting, Arcana, Society

Hot Take: If you play Automaton and skip Crafting without a reason, you miss a useful character beat: explaining the bolt pattern in your own shoulder.

Equipment

Automaton equipment should be planned around body integration, runes, and campaign technology level.

NeedBest Direction
Body armorReinforced Chassis and normal armor are different plans. Do not pick both conceptually without checking how the build handles armor.
Integrated weaponsIntegrated Armament supports one-handed weapons or shields. Pair it with weapons and class proficiency.
FirearmsUse Guns & Gears, Gunslinger, and GM access rules before assuming firearms are common.
HandwrapsEnergy Beam, natural weapons, and unarmed attacks often care about unarmed attack support. Check the local equipment guidance before investing.
Repair and toolsAdventuring gear and tools and Crafting are part of the character's daily fiction.
TreasureTreasure Vault is useful for rune, gadget, talisman, and item-build support when the campaign expands beyond Guns & Gears.

Integrated gear is cool because it changes play. It also creates story risk. A weapon built into your arm is hard to disarm, but it is also evidence, identity, and probably a conversation with every city guard who is having a long day.

GM Advice

Automaton is rare. Treat that as a tool, not a barrier. Good campaign homes include ancient ruins, Jistka remnants, Rahadoum-adjacent history, Axis or planar themes, Alkenstar, Eihlona, Shory technology, construct laboratories, lost workshops, and factions that study souls or machines.

Use GM Core rarity and access guidance to decide how available the ancestry is. Then decide what NPCs think an Automaton is. Awe, curiosity, exploitation, reverence, legal concern, and scholarly obsession are all more interesting than everyone shrugging at the immortal soul-machine ordering soup.

For enemies and foils, use creature traits, constructs, clockwork guardians, golem-adjacent threats, planar monitors, artificers, and rivals who want the Automaton core. For campaign tone, read technology in campaigns.

Campaign Fit

Campaign TypeNotes
Ancient ruins ●Jistka, Shory, lost technology, and sealed construct sites all support Automaton stories.
Alkenstar or tech-heavy game ●Firearms, gadgets, vehicles, inventors, and social technology debates fit naturally.
Planar campaign ●Axis, planar quintessence, soul-core questions, and immortal identity all matter.
Standard city adventure ●Works if the GM includes curiosity, faction attention, and access consequences.
Rural low-magic campaign ●Can work, but the ancestry will dominate tone unless handled carefully.
Survival wilderness ●The constructed body helps flavor, but many ancestry feats want technology, ruins, or body mods more than foraging.

Hot Takes

Automaton Inventor is obvious. Automaton Champion is more interesting. "I built myself a lightning backpack" is good. "I am an immortal war body trying to understand mercy" is the kind of thing that makes the table put down their snacks.

The best Automaton feat is often the one that makes the body visible in play. Integrated weapon, chassis armor, arcane eye, core-powered magic, teleportation, and rejuvenation all tell the table what this ancestry is. A feat that never changes a scene is just decorative plating.

Automaton should create access questions. If no one in the campaign cares that a rare living construct is walking around, the GM has left story money on the floor.

Final Notes

Automaton is one of PF2e's best rare ancestries when the player and GM both commit to it. It gives you mechanics for a body that upgrades, a soul that persists, and a setting that remembers enough old mistakes to make the present uncomfortable. Build the chassis around a real role, give the core a reason to keep going, and the ancestry becomes more than a metal face in the party lineup.
