Introduction
Kobolds in Player Core 2 are small reptilian humanoids with darkvision, Dexterity, Charisma, and a long cultural habit of surviving next to things much bigger than they are. That is the mechanical pitch too: you are not built to absorb punishment. You are built to see first, move first, trap the hallway, cast the trick, stab the exposed target, and leave before the ogre realizes this was a meeting with an agenda.

The ancestry has one of the clearest identities in the Remaster line. Player Core 2 gives Kobolds benefactor-shaped heritages: dragon scales, elemental resistance, spell horns, jaws, swimming, poison tails, and cavern movement. Monster Core reinforces the same table language from the GM side: Kobolds favor tunnels, mines, warrens, ambushes, simple traps, ranged attacks, darkness, teamwork, and hit-and-run assaults.

Rating Key
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Defines the ancestry or enables a top-tier build lane. |
| ● | Strong, broad, and easy to use. |
| ● | Good with the right class or campaign. |
| ● | Narrow, flavorful, or table-dependent. |
Kobold Snapshot
| Feature | Player Core 2 details | Build impact |
|---|---|---|
| Rarity | Uncommon | Ask for access, especially if the campaign has strong setting assumptions. |
| Hit Points | 6 | Low. This is the ancestry's biggest mechanical cost. |
| Size | Small | Good for tight spaces and shared-square tricks, but watch weapon and reach plans. |
| Speed | 25 feet | Normal baseline. Scamper and Winglet feats can improve mobility. |
| Boosts | Dexterity, Charisma, free | Excellent for Rogues, Charisma casters, skirmishers, faces, and ranged characters. |
| Flaw | Constitution | Real survivability tax. Build around it instead of pretending bravery is armor. |
| Traits | Humanoid, kobold | Clean player ancestry package. |
| Vision | Darkvision | Excellent in dungeons, tunnels, ruins, night raids, and stealth-forward campaigns. |
| Languages | Common and Sakvroth | Extra options can support dragons, fiends, fey, elementals, dwarves, gnomes, and regional play. |
| Identity | Benefactor-shaped survivalists | Your heritage should explain what power shaped your warren and what you learned from it. |
Benefactors And Table Identity
Player Core 2 frames Kobold culture around caution, hierarchy, benefactors, powerful patrons, and survival through wit. Dragons are the classic influence, but elemental, fiendish, fey, subterranean, magical, or artifact-based influences can all shape a Kobold community. That matters because the ancestry's heritages are not generic. They are the mechanical residue of whatever your people lived beside, served, studied, or survived.
Monster Core adds the GM-facing version: Kobolds are pragmatic, diligent, trap-minded, and dangerous when they can prepare ground. They can be neutral neighbors, exploited servants, city sewer communities, Darklands survivors, dragon-adjacent warrens, or ambitious undercity citizens trying to win rights in places that treat them as convenient labor until they become inconveniently organized.
That is useful player material. A Kobold Rogue from an urban warren feels different from a cavern Ranger, a Spellhorn Sorcerer, or a Snare Setter Inventor. The ancestry gives you a tactical style and a social question: what happens when the smallest person in the room knows exactly where the ceiling is weakest?
Draconic Codex gives Dragonscaled kobolds a clearer mechanical lane. Pick the benefactor before its follow-up feats: the dragon's breath and magical tradition inform later resistance, breath, and innate-spell choices. Treat that connection as a character decision first, then confirm the exact options with your GM and the current rules text.
Heritage Rankings
| Heritage | Best for | Why it works | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Dragonscaled Kobold ● | Anyone expecting danger | 10 ancestry HP instead of 6 is a huge correction, and the dragon-related save bonus is useful in the right campaign. | | Spellhorn Kobold ● | Charisma casters, utility builds, tricksters | A common arcane cantrip as an innate spell is useful at every level, especially on non-Wizards. | | Strongjaw Kobold ● | Dex skirmishers, backup melee, unarmed concepts | A finesse jaws attack gives you a hands-free melee option that fits Rogue and mobile builds. | | Venomtail Kobold ● | Weapon users, ambushers, poison concepts | Once-per-day persistent poison damage is limited, but scaling poison on the right hit is meaningful. | | Cavernstalker Kobold ● | Dungeons, caves, squeezers, vertical maps | Better natural-stone climbing and squeezing is excellent when the map cooperates. | | Elementheart Kobold ● | Campaign-specific resistance builds | Resistance keyed to your elemental benefactor is good, but the exact damage type matters. | | Tunnelflood Kobold ● | Aquatic, sewer, river, coastal, or swamp campaigns | A swim Speed is outstanding when water matters and forgettable when it does not. |
Heritage Notes
Dragonscaled Kobold
Dragonscaled is the default best Kobold heritage because it fixes the ancestry's most obvious problem. Moving from 6 ancestry Hit Points to 10 is not flashy, but it changes early-level survivability immediately. The circumstance bonus against dragon breath, sleep, and paralysis is more campaign-dependent, but when it matters, it really matters.
Best classes: Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Champion, Guardian, and any Kobold who plans to be closer to danger than the lighting technician.
Spellhorn Kobold
Spellhorn is the best heritage for Charisma-forward Kobolds and one of the easiest ways to make the benefactor theme show up at the table. You choose a common arcane cantrip, cast it as an innate arcane spell, and use Charisma for the spellcasting ability. That fits Sorcerer, Bard, Thaumaturge, face Rogues, and non-casters who want a reliable magical trick.
It also unlocks Evolved Spellhorn and Resplendent Spellhorn later, giving you daily higher-rank arcane utility. Those later feats are not mandatory, but they make the heritage feel like an actual magical bloodline instead of a novelty forehead lamp.
Strongjaw Kobold
Strongjaw gives a jaws unarmed attack with finesse. That is excellent for Dexterity builds, characters who need a backup attack when disarmed, and anyone who wants a hands-free melee option while climbing, carrying gear, or holding tools. It is not enough by itself to make you a frontliner, but it gives Rogues and skirmishers a clean emergency bite.
Venomtail Kobold
Venomtail gives a once-per-day poison application that can add persistent poison damage to a hit. The once-per-day limit keeps it from being a whole build on its own, and poison immunity will occasionally ruin your day, but it is strong on characters who can time the hit: Rogue, Ranger, Fighter, and Alchemist concepts all make sense.
Cavernstalker Kobold
Cavernstalker is terrain tech. In natural stone environments, better climbing and squeezing help you use tunnels, cracks, cliffs, ruins, and cave maps like actual tactical assets. In a campaign full of ballrooms and open roads, it becomes much less impressive.
Elementheart Kobold
Elementheart gives resistance based on an elemental benefactor: air, earth, fire, metal, water, or wood. Cold, electricity, fire, sonic, acid, and poison all have different campaign value. Fire and poison tend to be easy to justify; sonic is much more table-dependent. Pick this when you know the campaign's threat profile or when the ancestry story matters enough to accept variance.
Tunnelflood Kobold
Tunnelflood gives a swim Speed. That is either incredible or almost invisible. In a sewer crawl, pirate game, flooded megadungeon, swamp campaign, or riverland exploration arc, it can carry scenes. In dry mountain politics, it mostly lets you look smug near fountains.
Ancestry Feat Rankings
| Feat | Level | Best for | Why it matters | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Scamper ● | 1 | Skirmishers, fragile builds, tactical retreats | Extra-speed escape from adjacency with better AC against reactions is Kobold survival in one action. | | Snare Setter ● | 1 | Crafters, dungeon players, planners | Crafting training, snare access, and Snare Crafting create the real trap-build lane. | | Cringe ● | 1 | Anyone with low HP | Reducing damage from a critical hit can save a small body from becoming a short cautionary tale. | | Kobold Lore ● | 1 | Scouts and skill builds | Stealth, Thievery, and scaling Kobold Lore are perfect for the ancestry's default playstyle. | | Dragon's Presence ● | 1 | Dragonscaled and fear builds | Nice fear protection and Demoralize support, but heritage-locked and swingy. | | Kobold Weapon Familiarity ● | 1 | Cultural weapon users | Useful if you want kobold weapons, picks, or crit specialization access later. | | Benefactor's Resistance ● | 1 | Dragonscaled Kobolds facing a known breath damage type | The resistance follows your chosen benefactor's breath. It is a practical defense choice, but only after you pick the benefactor and its damage type. | | Draconic Sycophant ● | 1 | Dragon-focused campaigns and diplomatic scenes | The Perception and save bonus against dragons is excellent when dragons matter. The social use is deliberately narrower. | | Dragonscaled Lore ● | 1 | Dragonscaled faces and magical researchers | Intimidation plus a tradition skill or Dragon Lore supports a character who needs dragon knowledge. It is not a damage feat. | | Hoarder's Craw ● | 1 | Smugglers, scouts, and story-heavy games | Hiding a small item can solve a specific problem, but the hour-long drawback makes it poor emergency gear management. | | Kobold Breath ● | 1 | Dragonscaled Kobolds with room in their action routine | The cone or line breath is the clearest new build lane. Its tradition, damage, and defense depend on your benefactor, and its two actions plus recharge keep it from being a default attack. | | Ally's Shelter ● | 5 | Team players, save patching | Once per day, borrowing a nearby ally's better save modifier can rescue you from a bad save profile. | | Grovel ● | 5 | Deception builds, ranged skirmishers | A ranged Feint against Will DC lets you make enemies off-guard without standing where they want you. | | Snare Genius ● | 5 | Dedicated snare builds | Faster snare setup, free quick snares, and off-guard pressure make traps a repeatable plan. | | Winglets ● | 5 | Jumpers and future flyers | Good movement setup, mainly because Winglet Flight is worth reaching. | | Benefactor's Strike ● | 5 | Dragonscaled unarmed builds | Persistent damage on a critical unarmed Strike is a real payoff for jaws, claws, or tail routines. Weapon users should look elsewhere. | | Kobold Momentum ● | 5 | Kobold Breath builds that make accurate Strikes | A critical Strike can recharge the breath and improves its damage roll. It rewards a real Strike-and-breath routine, not a caster who rarely attacks. | | Tip the Scales ● | 5 | Any Kobold that expects to Escape | This is the most broadly useful new addition: it turns a successful Escape into movement, a Trip, or a Shove without requiring the Dragonscaled chain. | | Between the Scales ● | 9 | Agile/finesse melee | Adds backstabber-style pressure against off-guard targets, which fits Rogue and skirmisher routines. | | Fleeing Shriek ● | 9 | Escape tools, swarm control | Sonic burst plus movement can clear space and deny reactions against failed saves. | | Winglet Flight ● | 9 | Mobility builds | Short tactical flight is excellent if you planned for Winglets. | | Evolved Spellhorn ● | 9 | Spellhorn builds | Daily 1st- and 2nd-rank arcane spells add utility, but the action economy and spell choice matter. | | Breath Unleashed ● | 9 | Planned burst fights | A larger, stronger breath is a good boss-fight tool, but the hour-long recharge prevents the Kobold Momentum loop during that window. | | Dracomancer ● | 9 | Dragonscaled Charisma builds with GM-approved dragon access | Daily innate spells can add useful coverage, but the benefactor's spellcaster listing defines the choices. Confirm it with the GM rather than treating this as a universal spell package. | | Draconic Paragon ● | 9 | A completed breath, unarmed, or innate-spell branch | This improves the branch you already chose. It has no useful rating in isolation because its benefit changes with its prerequisite. | | Resplendent Spellhorn ● | 13 | Deep Spellhorn builds | Daily 3rd- and 4th-rank arcane spells are good, but this is a specialized chain. | | Vicious Snares ● | 13 | Snare specialists | More precision damage on damage snares is good if traps remain part of play at high level. | | Elite Dracomancer ● | 13 | High-level Dracomancer builds | Higher-rank daily innate spells continue the Dracomancer plan. Take it only if the original package still fills a real role in the party. | | Briar Battler ● | 9 | Difficult-terrain campaigns | Taking Cover in environmental difficult terrain is clever, but it needs the right maps. | | Close Quarters ● | 9 | Small-party positioning tricks | Sharing space with a Small ally is cute and occasionally useful, but narrow. |

Best Class Fits
| Class | Why it fits | | --- | --- | --- | | Rogue ● | Dexterity, Charisma, Stealth, Thievery, off-guard tactics, Grovel, and Strongjaw all fit. | | Sorcerer ● | Charisma boost, Spellhorn flavor, benefactor themes, and arcane utility make this an obvious pairing. | | Bard ● | Charisma, skills, support magic, social play, and clever problem-solving all align. | | Ranger ● | Scouting, ambushes, snares, ranged attacks, terrain, and Monster Core's Kobold scout logic all match. | | Alchemist ● | Crafting, poisons, bombs, tools, and trap-minded play make the ancestry feel practical. | | Inventor ● | Crafting and warren engineering are a strong concept, though the attributes need planning. | | Thaumaturge ● | Charisma and occult object weirdness fit benefactor lore, but the class wants careful defense. | | Witch ● | Benefactor themes are excellent, though Intelligence is not built into the ancestry. | | Fighter ● | Reliable for weapon and shield builds, especially Dragonscaled or snare-adjacent tactics. | | Barbarian ● | Possible, but the Constitution flaw and low HP make it harder than sturdier ancestry choices. |
Class Pairing Notes
Rogue
Rogue is the cleanest Kobold class. You already want Dexterity, skills, Stealth, Deception, flanking, off-guard targets, and ways to avoid being hit. Kobold adds darkvision, Grovel, Scamper, Strongjaw, Between the Scales, and a personality built around not fighting fair. That is not a flaw. That is a curriculum.
Sorcerer And Bard
Sorcerer and Bard use the Charisma boost well. Spellhorn makes the magical benefactor fantasy immediate, and the ancestry's social instincts fit both classes. The main caution is survivability: do not let Charisma convince you that a Constitution flaw is a myth made up by pessimistic healers.
Ranger
Ranger is excellent when the campaign rewards scouting, traps, terrain, and ranged pressure. Kobold darkvision, Snare Setter, Stealth, Survival, and hit-and-run movement turn wilderness or dungeon play into a tactical job instead of a sightseeing tour.
Alchemist And Inventor
Alchemist and Inventor are the best "warren engineer" classes. They make Crafting central, love prepared tools, and can justify snares, bombs, gadgets, poison, alchemical gear, and strange devices. If the party asks why there is a pressure plate in your backpack, the answer is "boundaries."
Fighter And Guardian
Martial Kobolds need defense. Dragonscaled, armor, shields, reach, ranged weapons, Scamper, Cringe, and good positioning all matter. A Kobold Fighter can work very well, but it should be tactical, not reckless.
Best Skills
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Stealth ● | Darkvision, ambushes, hit-and-run tactics, and Monster Core Kobold behavior all point here. |
| Crafting ● | Required for the snare lane and perfect for warren engineers, Alchemists, and Inventors. |
| Thievery ● | Kobold Lore grants it, and it fits traps, locks, and dungeon utility. |
| Deception ● | Grovel, Feint, Create a Diversion, and social survival all use it well. |
| Arcana ● | Spellhorn, magical benefactors, and arcane cantrips make this a strong knowledge pick. |
| Survival ● | Good for scouts, cave travel, and Ranger concepts. |
| Intimidation ● | Dragon's Presence and Charisma support it, but Kobold relies on timing more than raw menace. |
| Acrobatics ● | Tumbling Diversion and mobile skirmishing reward investment. |
| Diplomacy ● | Useful for city Kobolds and negotiation, but not the default mechanical lane. |
Best Equipment
| Gear | Best users | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ranged weapons | Scouts, Rogues, Rangers | Monster Core Kobolds attack from range for a reason: distance is armor with better manners. |
| Weapons | Fighters, Rogues, Rangers | Agile, finesse, thrown, and reach options usually fit Kobold better than slow brawling plans. |
| Greatpick, light pick, pick | Kobold Weapon Familiarity builds | Player Core 2 includes these in the familiarity package, making pick crits a real cultural weapon idea. |
| Alchemical items | Alchemists, poisoners, scouts | Poison, smoke, utility alchemy, and bombs all fit the "prepared small menace" lane. |
| Consumables | Everyone | Kobolds should love tools that solve a problem once and then stop weighing anything. |
| Armor | Frontliners and skirmishers | Low HP plus a Constitution flaw means AC matters. |
| Shields | Dragonscaled martials, cautious casters | A shield can buy the round you need to Scamper away. |
| Runes | Weapon and armor users | Keep item math current. Clever plans still miss if the weapon is behind. |
| Adventuring gear | Scouts and trappers | Rope, tools, climbing gear, light sources for allies, and trap supplies make the ancestry practical. |
Example Builds
| Concept | Heritage | Class | Key choices |
|---|---|---|---|

| Warren Engineer | Dragonscaled or Cavernstalker | Inventor or Alchemist | Crafting, Snare Setter, Snare Genius, alchemical utility |
| Spellhorn Social Menace | Spellhorn | Bard or Sorcerer | Charisma, Arcana, cantrip utility, Evolved Spellhorn |
| Poison Skirmisher | Venomtail | Ranger or Rogue | Stealth, ranged or finesse weapon, Venomtail timing |
| Little Dragon Tank | Dragonscaled | Fighter or Guardian | Armor, shield, Cringe, Ally's Shelter, Scamper |
| Flood Tunnel Scout | Tunnelflood | Ranger | Survival, Stealth, swim Speed, ranged pressure |
GM Core And Monster Core Notes
Kobold shines when the GM uses terrain. Narrow tunnels, ledges, low ceilings, side passages, cover, darkness, secret routes, trapped approaches, and enemies that can be delayed matter more than raw ancestry math. GM Core guidance on hazards, encounter building, exploration, and environment makes Kobold scenes better because it gives their caution a place to matter.
Monster Core is also useful for tone. Kobold warriors, scouts, and cavern mages show the same pattern: darkvision, Stealth, Crafting, ranged attacks, traps, Scamper, sneak attack style pressure, and magic shaped by powerful surroundings. Player characters should not copy monster stat blocks, but the book confirms the fantasy: Kobolds win by preparation, teamwork, and refusing to die in a fair fight.
For social campaigns, city Kobolds are especially interesting. Monster Core notes that some Kobold communities live under large cities, drawn by magical institutions or the convenience of urban life, and can occupy a shaky legal position. That is campaign fuel for social encounters, faction play, sewers, universities, undercity politics, and "who owns the tunnels under the palace?" arguments.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Better approach |
|---|---|
| Treating Kobold as a frontliner by default | Use Dragonscaled, shields, armor, range, stealth, or Scamper if danger is near. |
| Taking Snare Setter without investing in Crafting | Snares need skill support and campaign buy-in. |
| Choosing Cavernstalker or Tunnelflood in the wrong campaign | Terrain heritages are powerful only when the terrain appears. |
| Forgetting darkvision | Scout, ambush, and navigate in darkness. Make the sense matter. |
| Using Venomtail on the first random hit | Save it for a target where persistent poison damage can actually swing the fight. |
| Playing Kobold as only cowardly comic relief | Caution is not cowardice. It is math with better survival odds. |
Hot Take
Kobold Breath is a better reason to choose Dragonscaled than a generic "tiny dragon" concept. It asks for two actions, a benefactor choice, and a recharge plan, so it pays off only when the rest of the character can create a useful breath turn.
Final Verdict
Kobold is an A-tier ancestry for tactical players and a C-tier ancestry for players who refuse to plan. The chassis gives you darkvision, Dexterity, Charisma, small size, and strong heritage identities, but the 6 HP baseline and Constitution flaw punish sloppy positioning. That is the deal: if you use terrain, timing, stealth, snares, ranged attacks, magic, and retreat routes, Kobold feels sharp. If you stand still and trade hits, the ancestry files a complaint with your healer.
Pick Dragonscaled if you want the safest all-purpose Kobold. Pick Spellhorn if you want arcane flavor and Charisma synergy. Pick Strongjaw for Dex melee backup. Pick Venomtail for poison ambushes. Pick Cavernstalker, Elementheart, or Tunnelflood when the campaign makes their terrain or resistance matter.
The best Kobold characters do not ask, "Can I win this fight?" They ask, "Why is this fight happening in a room I did not prepare?"
