Introduction
Kholo are hyena-headed humanoids from Player Core 2 with one of the sharpest ancestry identities in PF2e Remastered: practical pack survival, ambush tactics, ancestor reverence, bonekeeper traditions, and a willingness to win without romantic nonsense about "honorable" failure.

Mechanically, Kholo are not just spooky teeth. They get Strength, Intelligence, a free boost, low-light vision, and a jaws attack. Their heritages can push them toward Deception, darkvision, speed, Athletics, Diplomacy, cold survival, or occult trickery. Their ancestry feats reward Aid, scent, stealth, jaws, pack movement, poison, healing, intimidation, and first-round aggression.

| Bite | 1d6 piercing jaws in the brawling group | Real unarmed backup, and Crunch can make it better. |

Culture And Table Tone
Player Core 2 frames Kholo as practical, pack-minded, and often misunderstood. They value survival, tactical advantage, ancestral memory, and results. Their endocannibalism is presented as reverence for the dead, not shock content. Monster Core reinforces the same tension from the GM side: outsiders often fear their laughter, intelligence, ambush style, and death rites.
That means Kholo should get a short session-zero conversation. Decide how much the campaign wants to engage with taboo funerary customs, ancestor bones, Lamashtu associations, social mistrust, pack loyalty, and psychological warfare. You can run this ancestry with dark humor, serious cultural weight, or a lighter "clever hyena scout" tone, but everyone should know which one is on the table.
Heritage Rankings
| Heritage | Best for | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Great Kholo ● | Frontliners, Athletics builds, control martials | 10 ancestry HP plus better Reposition, Shove, and Trip checks is immediately useful. |
| Cave Kholo ● | Dungeons, night travel, darkness-heavy campaigns | Darkvision is simple, reliable, and frequently relevant. |
| Dog Kholo ● | Mobile skirmishers, unarmed builds, scouts | 30-foot Speed while on all fours with both hands free is excellent if your build can keep hands open. |
| Witch Kholo ● | Tricksters, occult concepts, voice-based deception | At-will figment and vocal Deception/Impersonation support are flavorful and useful. |
| Ant Kholo ● | Deception builds, small scouts, innocence liars | Small size and Deception initiative are great if you actively use Deception. |
| Sweetbreath Kholo ● | Social predators, diplomats, unsettling charm builds | Diplomacy and Make an Impression support can matter a lot, but the smell clause is campaign-facing. |
| Winter Kholo ● | Cold campaigns, wilderness survival | Cold resistance and reduced cold severity are strong when the environment cooperates. |

Heritage Notes
Great Kholo
Great Kholo is the practical frontliner pick. More ancestry HP is never embarrassing, and bonuses to Reposition, Shove, and Trip support Athletics, grapple and control actions, and battlefield bullying.
Best classes: Fighter, Barbarian, Guardian, Champion, and Commander.
Cave Kholo
Cave Kholo is boring in the best way. Darkvision does not need a combo engine. If the campaign has ruins, tunnels, night raids, caves, or magical darkness problems, Cave Kholo pays you every session.
Dog Kholo
Dog Kholo gives you speed when both hands are free and you move on all fours. That is excellent for unarmed characters, scouts, and anyone who can fight without committing both hands to weapons or shields. It also unlocks Rabid Sprint later, which is as subtle as a thrown chair and about as hard to ignore.
Witch Kholo
Witch Kholo is the occult trickster option. At-will figment is useful, and the bonus to Create a Diversion or Impersonate using only your voice is perfect for eerie laughter, false calls, and "I swear the sound came from over there" nonsense.
This is not only for Witch. Rogues, Bards, Sorcerers, and any skill-heavy character can make it work if they want deception tools.
Ant Kholo
Ant Kholo is Small, trained in Deception, and better at lying about innocence. That is very specific, but it supports a fun social ambusher who looks less physically imposing than other Kholo and then weaponizes that assumption.
Sweetbreath Kholo
Sweetbreath Kholo is for the player who wants unsettling charm instead of overt intimidation. Diplomacy training and Make an Impression support are useful, and Breath Like Honey later adds a strong occult social trick.
Winter Kholo
Winter Kholo is campaign-dependent. In cold regions, it is excellent. In a city intrigue campaign in warm weather, it is mostly a fur coat with ambition.
Ancestry Feat Rankings
| Feat | Level | Best for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pack Hunter ● | 1 | Team players | +2 circumstance bonuses to Aid both ways makes the whole party better. This is Kholo teamwork in one feat. |
| Sensitive Nose ● | 1 | Trackers, scouts, ambushers | 30-foot imprecise scent is excellent, but it is locked to 1st level and cannot be retrained into or out of. |
| Crunch ● | 1 | Bite builds | Improves jaws to 1d8 and adds grapple. Simple, strong, and always on. |
| Kholo Lore ● | 1 | Scouts and survival builds | Stealth, Survival, and Kholo Lore are exactly the skills the ancestry wants. |
| Pack Stalker ● | 5 | Stealth parties | Terrain Stalker plus ally extension makes ambush play a party tactic. |
| Affliction Resistance ● | 5 | Frontliners and explorers | Better disease and poison saves are broadly useful, especially in wilderness and monster-heavy games. |
| Ambush Hunter ● | 9 | Scouts | Scout and Avoid Notice at the same time is clean exploration-mode power. |
| Laughing Kholo ● | 9 | Intimidation builds | Battle Cry plus language-independent Demoralize is very strong for fear users. |
| Legendary Laugh ● | 17 | Intimidation specialists | Long-range Demoralize plus mental damage turns your laugh into an actual problem. |
| First To Strike, First To Fall ● | 17 | Ambush parties | First-round pressure can make enemies off-guard and reward takedowns with party mobility/actions. |
| Ask the Bones ● | 1 | Knowledge characters | Once-per-day Recall Knowledge support is flavorful and useful when the right subject appears. |
| Hyena Familiar ● | 1 | Casters and scouts | Familiar utility is always nice, and the ancestry flavor is perfect. |
| Kholo Weapon Familiarity ● | 1 | Weapon users | Access and proficiency smoothing for kholo weapons, flail, khopesh, mambele, and war flail. |
| Absorb Strength ● | 5 | Frontliners | Temp HP from a fresh corpse is on-theme and useful, but the timing and adjacency requirements matter. |
| Right-Hand Blood ● | 5 | Emergency medics | Treat wounds or disease without a healer's toolkit at a personal cost. Weird, useful, and very Kholo. |
| Left-Hand Blood ● | 5 | Weapon users | Self-damage to add persistent poison damage is good when poison is relevant. |
| Breath Like Honey ● | 9 | Sweetbreath builds | Strong social magic, but heritage-locked and dependent on social encounter use. |
| Grandmother's Wisdom ● | 9 | Planners | Twice-daily augury is excellent when the party asks good questions. |
| Bonekeeper's Bane ● | 13 | Frontliners | Adjacent enemies risk a status penalty to attacks and skill checks. Good for stickiness. |
| Impaling Bone ● | 17 | Occult and undead campaigns | High-rank bone spike with ghost touch relevance is strong but narrow. |
| Distant Cackle ● | 5 | Witch Kholo | Ventriloquism is fun and flavorful, but not every table rewards it. |
| Rabid Sprint ● | 5 | Dog Kholo | Three Strides is fast, but hands-free requirements and flourish limit who loves it. |
| Ancestor's Rage ● | 13 | Transformation fans | Once-per-day canine animal form is cool, but many martial builds already have stronger routines. |

Best Class Fits
| Class | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Rogue ● | Kholo loves ambush, Deception, Stealth, first-round pressure, and dirty-but-effective tactics. |
| Ranger ● | Survival, tracking, pack hunting, animal themes, and ambush play all align. |
| Fighter ● | Strength, jaws backup, Kholo weapons, Athletics, and tactical control make Fighter very reliable. |
| Barbarian ● | Strength and bite aggression work well, especially if you want a brutal hunter fantasy. |
| Commander ● | Pack Hunter and tactical repositioning fit a battlefield leader who wins through coordination. |
| Guardian ● | Great Kholo durability, control, and protective pack loyalty make Guardian a strong fit. |
| Witch ● | Witch Kholo, Hyena Familiar, Ask the Bones, and occult tricks create a strong bonekeeper concept. |
| Druid ● | Nature, animals, survival, and clan rites fit well, though the Wisdom flaw needs planning. |
| Cleric ● | Bonekeeper, ancestor rites, and deity ties work, but Wisdom flaw makes attribute planning important. |
| Champion ● | Pack loyalty and protection themes fit; Charisma needs investment if you lean into Champion abilities. |
Class Pairing Notes
Rogue
Rogue is probably the best Kholo class if you want the ancestry to show up every session. Ant Kholo, Witch Kholo, Kholo Lore, Pack Stalker, Ambush Hunter, Stealth, Deception, and first-round positioning all feed the Rogue loop. Add Pack Hunter and you become the person who turns "I Aid" into a serious threat.
Ranger
Ranger is the cleanest hunter version. Sensitive Nose, Kholo Lore, Survival, tracking, animal companions, and ambush feats make this feel like a full ancestry-class concept rather than a stat block wearing fur.
Fighter
Fighter is the best direct combat chassis. Great Kholo plus Athletics maneuvers gives you Reposition, Shove, Trip, jaws backup, and weapon control. Kholo Weapon Familiarity can matter if you want flails, khopesh, mambele, war flail, or the spirit thresher from Player Core 2.
Commander
Commander is the "pack brain" option. Pack Hunter already rewards Aid, and Monster Core's Kholo sergeant reinforces the idea of Kholo leaders using orders and repositioning rather than heroic solo duels. You are not here to win fair. You are here to win together.
Witch And Cleric
Bonekeeper concepts naturally point toward Witch or Cleric. Ask the Bones, Hyena Familiar, Grandmother's Wisdom, Religion, Medicine, and ancestor rites give you a lot to play with. Just remember the Wisdom flaw if you are going Cleric or Druid.
Best Skills
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Stealth ● | Kholo Lore, Pack Stalker, and Ambush Hunter all reward stealthy play. |
| Athletics ● | Great Kholo and Strength boosts support Reposition, Shove, Trip, and Grapple. |
| Survival ● | Tracking, overland travel, hunting, and clan survival all fit. |
| Deception ● | Ant Kholo, Witch Kholo, ambushes, diversions, and social misdirection use it well. |
| Intimidation ● | Laughing Kholo and Legendary Laugh reward serious investment. |
| Diplomacy ● | Sweetbreath Kholo makes it attractive for social predator builds. |
| Medicine ● | Right-Hand Blood and bonekeeper concepts support practical healing. |
| Religion ● | Bonekeepers, ancestor rites, Lamashtu, Nethys, Calistria, and Shelyn themes can matter. |
| Nature ● | Useful for wilderness and animal-heavy Kholo concepts. |
| Society ● | Good for storytellers and clan historians, but not a default priority. |
Best Equipment
| Gear | Best users | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons | Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Barbarian | Kholo can use ordinary weapons well; do not force exotic gear if your class already has a better plan. |
| Spirit thresher | Kholo weapon builds | Player Core 2's Kholo weapon is a two-handed flail with sweep and versatile slashing. Very on-theme. |
| Flail or war flail | Control martials | Kholo Weapon Familiarity supports these, and flail traits fit trip/control concepts. |
| Khopesh | Strength weapon users | The ancestry familiarity feat includes it, making it a strong cultural weapon option. |
| Mambele | Thrown-weapon concepts | A flavorful weapon if your build wants ranged pressure without abandoning ancestry identity. |
| Armor | Frontliners | Great Kholo and Strength builds still need ordinary defense. Teeth do not stop arrows. |
| Runes | Everyone using weapons or armor | Keep item math current. Ancestry flavor does not replace potency and striking. |
| Adventuring gear | Scouts and survivalists | Rope, tools, healer's kits, and exploration gear make Kholo practicality feel real. |
Example Builds
| Concept | Heritage | Class | Key choices |

| Bonekeeper Witch | Witch | Witch | Hyena Familiar, Ask the Bones, Grandmother's Wisdom, Religion |
| Great Clan Enforcer | Great | Fighter | Athletics, Crunch, Kholo Weapon Familiarity, flail control |
| Four-Limbed Scout | Dog | Ranger | Sensitive Nose, Survival, Rabid Sprint, tracking |
| Laughing Terror | Witch or Great | Barbarian or Rogue | Intimidation, Laughing Kholo, Legendary Laugh |
| Practical Field Medic | Sweetbreath or Sage-like concept | Cleric or skill martial | Medicine, Right-Hand Blood, social support |
GM Core And Monster Core Notes
Kholo benefits from a session-zero tone check. Their ancestor worship and endocannibalism are important cultural details, but they should be handled as worldbuilding, not as cheap shock humor. Decide how much prejudice, taboo, rumor, and social friction the campaign wants.
GM Core helps with social reactions, wilderness travel, encounter building, and consequences for ambush tactics. Kholo parties can be good neighbors, terrifying neighbors, or both, depending on whose goats disappeared and whether anyone found the warning signs.
Monster Core adds useful NPC context: Kholo hunters, bonekeepers, and sergeants emphasize Stealth, Survival, Intimidation, Medicine, Religion, jaws, Pack Attack, Rugged Travel, and tactical orders. That does not mean every player Kholo should copy those stat blocks, but it shows the ancestry's expected table vocabulary: pack pressure, ambushes, practical movement, and fear as a tool.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Better approach |
|---|---|
| Playing Kholo as random evil hyena people | Focus on pack loyalty, pragmatism, ancestor reverence, and tactical survival. |
| Ignoring the Wisdom flaw | Plan Perception, Will, Medicine, Survival, or casting builds carefully. |
| Taking Sensitive Nose without wanting scent play | It is powerful, but only if tracking and hidden creatures matter. |
| Forgetting Aid | Pack Hunter is one of the ancestry's best feats because Aid is a real team engine. |
| Taking Witch Kholo without using the voice tricks | Figment and vocal deception need table creativity. Use them. |
| Making death rites a joke every scene | Treat the cultural material with enough seriousness that it can carry story weight. |
Hot Take
Kholo is one of the best ancestries for players who like tactical ruthlessness without playing a cartoon villain. It is stronger as a team ancestry than as a solo murder machine: Pack Hunter, Pack Stalker, Ambush Hunter, and First To Strike, First To Fall all make the party more dangerous together. Wasting your pack's lives for style points is dumb.
Great Kholo is the obvious martial pick, but Cave Kholo may quietly outperform it in old-school exploration campaigns. Darkvision is not glamorous. Neither is a lockpick until the door is locked.
The Wisdom flaw is the ancestry's real cost. Strength and Intelligence are great, but losing Wisdom on a hunter ancestry is a design dare. Accept the dare only if your build knows how to cover perception and Will pressure.
Kholo's best roleplay is not "I am scary." It is "I am practical, loyal, and completely uninterested in your decorative code of honor."
The spirit thresher is wonderfully unsubtle: it announces that your people have complicated funerary customs before anyone asks a follow-up question.
Final Verdict
Kholo is an A-tier ancestry for tactical players. It supports ambushes, Aid, Athletics, Stealth, Intimidation, survival play, occult tricks, ancestor rites, and jaws-based backup plans. It is especially good for Rogue, Ranger, Fighter, Commander, Guardian, and bonekeeper-style Witch or Cleric characters.
Pick Great Kholo if you want a frontliner. Pick Cave Kholo if the campaign is dark. Pick Dog Kholo if hands-free mobility matters. Pick Witch Kholo if you want eerie occult misdirection. Pick Ant or Sweetbreath if you want social manipulation. Pick Winter if the weather is trying to kill you.
The best Kholo characters understand the assignment: protect the pack, win efficiently, remember the dead, and never confuse fairness with virtue.
