Introduction
Alchemist feats are easy to misread because the class does not win by taking one spectacular feat and repeating it forever. The Alchemist wins by making the right item available at the right time without choking on its own action economy. That means the best feat is often boring on paper: draw faster, throw cleaner, make formulas matter, deliver healing from range, turn splash into party value, or keep a mutagen drawback from ruining the scene.
This guide covers the remastered Alchemist from Player Core 2, then adds table context from alchemical items, consumables, Crafting, persistent damage, Monster Traits, Treasure Vault Remaster, and GM resources.

Rating Key
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Strong default pick for the right field or a broad Alchemist build. |
| ● | Good when your build, party, or campaign supports it. |
| ● | Narrow, setup-heavy, or campaign-dependent. |
| ● | Usually a trap because it costs actions, assumes friendly matchups, or solves a problem you do not face often. |

Level 1 To 4 Feat Picks
| Feat or feat line | Best for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Bomber ● | Bomber, generalist, any bomb-heavy Alchemist | The Alchemist needs action compression more than it needs another cute bottle trick. Drawing or making a bomb and attacking cleanly is a real turn. |
| Far Lobber ● | Bomber, ranged support, open maps | Range matters when the Alchemist cannot afford to spend the whole fight Striding into splash position. |
| Alchemical Familiar ● | Generalist, support, exploration | A familiar can add scouting, item utility, and action support depending on abilities chosen. Good, but not mandatory. |
| Quick Alchemy support ● | Every field that reacts to combat problems | Quick Alchemy is strongest when it creates the answer you did not know you needed at daily prep. |
| Narrow theme feats ● | Flavor builds, specific campaigns | Fun when the table repeats the exact problem. Weak when the campaign shifts away from it. |
Early Bomber Notes
Bomber is the cleanest early Alchemist because bombs create visible combat output: damage type coverage, splash, persistent damage, off-guard support, and weakness targeting. Quick Bomber is the standout because it lets the field operate without drowning in item handling. Far Lobber rises when maps are large, enemies fly, or the party uses chokepoints.
The trap is treating every bomb as a damage spell. Bombs are also team accuracy, condition delivery, weakness hunting, and persistent damage pressure. If you are only checking the first damage number, you are grading the class with one eye closed.
Early Chirurgeon Notes
Chirurgeon should think about delivery and timing. Healing items are only excellent if they reach the right body before the action cost turns ugly. Feats that make elixirs easier to use, move, deliver, or combine with condition support matter more than random bomb upgrades unless the party is already healing-heavy.
Use Medicine and Crafting together. A Chirurgeon that ignores skill support is choosing to make emergency turns harder.
Early Mutagenist Notes
Mutagenist feats should make a planned transformation worth the drawback. That means picking mutagens for specific jobs, protecting the character from the downside, and deciding whether the Alchemist is drinking the mutagen or making someone else better.
Do not take mutagen feats because the word "mutagen" appears on the sheet. Take them because your party knows when to use them.
Early Toxicologist Notes
Toxicologist is powerful when the campaign gives it valid targets, time to prepare, and methods to deliver poison. It is painful when the party fights poison-immune monsters every week. Early Toxicologist feats should be judged beside Stealth, scouting, thrown or ranged delivery, and backup damage from bombs.
The blunt version: poison is not a personality. It is a matchup plan.
Level 6 To 10 Feat Picks
| Feat or feat line | Best for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Calculated Splash and splash upgrades ● | Bomber | Splash damage becomes more reliable and more worth positioning around. |
| Debilitating Bomb ● | Bomber, control support | Conditions on bomb hits make the Alchemist feel like a tactical class instead of a discount archer. |
| Sticky Bomb ● | Bomber, boss fights | Persistent damage is one of the best ways for Alchemist damage to matter over time. |
| Healing Bomb ● | Chirurgeon, party support | Ranged healing delivery fixes one of the support Alchemist's most practical problems. |
| Combine Elixirs ● | Chirurgeon, support generalist | Excellent when the party pre-buffs or when elixir effects solve different problems at once. |
| Enduring Alchemy ● | Quick Alchemy users | Helps temporary Quick Alchemy items survive the timing window long enough to matter. |
| Poison delivery upgrades ● | Toxicologist | Strong when enemies are valid and the party helps create delivery windows. |
| Mutagen support upgrades ● | Mutagenist | Good when the build already knows who drinks what and why. |
The Midgame Question
At these levels, Alchemist feats should stop being random add-ons and start forming a role. A Bomber that has Quick Bomber, splash improvements, and debilitating effects plays very differently from a Chirurgeon that turns elixir delivery into battlefield triage. A Toxicologist should now know whether the campaign supports poison often enough. A Mutagenist should know whether the field is a personal combat plan or a party buff plan.
If the answer is still "I make whatever seems funny," that can be entertaining, but it is not optimization.
Level 12 To 20 Feat Picks
| Feat or feat line | Best for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded Splash and high-level bomb upgrades ● | Bomber | Keeps bomb turns relevant as monsters become harder to impress. |
| Greater debilitating bomb support ● | Bomber, control parties | Strongest when allies exploit the condition window immediately. |
| Advanced healing and condition elixir support ● | Chirurgeon | High-level support is about preventing death spirals, not topping off scratches. |
| Persistent Mutagen style support ● | Mutagenist | Strong if the build commits to mutagen uptime and accepts the drawbacks. |
| Revivifying Mutagen ● | Mutagenist | Turns ending or removing a mutagen into useful recovery instead of pure cleanup. |
| Improbable Elixirs-style utility ● | Generalist, support | High-level alchemy gets scary when it borrows the right magical-style answers. |
| Narrow immunity counters ● | Specific campaigns | Valuable when the GM repeatedly uses the relevant threat, otherwise too narrow. |
Late Alchemist feats ask whether your campaign still rewards item problem-solving. If the GM uses varied creatures, hazards, terrain, downtime, and clue-driven encounters, the class keeps scaling through choice quality. If every fight is a flat room against the same monster profile, the feat list gets much smaller.
Field Rankings
| Research field | Best feat themes | Main warning |
|---|---|---|
| Bomber ● | Quick Bomber, Far Lobber, splash, persistent damage, conditions | Friendly fire and action waste are still real. |
| Chirurgeon ● | Healing delivery, elixirs, condition support, Medicine/Crafting overlap | Healing after disaster is worse than preparing before it. |
| Mutagenist ● | Mutagen timing, drawback management, body specialization | Mutagens are tradeoffs, not free buffs. |
| Toxicologist ● | Poison delivery, scouting, target selection, backup damage | Poison immunity and high Fortitude can blank the plan. |
Bomber gets the best all-table feat reliability because damage types, splash, and conditions show up in almost every campaign. Chirurgeon is the best party support when the group actually uses your items. Mutagenist is more table- and player-dependent. Toxicologist has the highest matchup tax.
Action Economy Audit
Before selecting an Alchemist feat, ask:
- Does this reduce an action I already spend?
- Does this make Quick Alchemy easier to use at the moment of need?
- Does this improve an item I prepare every day?
- Does this help allies use my items without wrecking their turns?
- Does this still work when the target is immune to poison, resistant to the damage type, flying, hidden, or far away?
- Does this require a free hand I do not actually have?
If a feat adds a new action and does not answer those questions well, downgrade it. PF2e does not give Alchemists bonus turns for owning more bottles.
Formula And Equipment Pairings
Alchemist feats are inseparable from formula access. Your feat choices decide what item families you want to improve, but your formula book decides whether those choices have enough payload.
| Need | Best linked guide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bomb damage and conditions | Alchemical Items | Bomb selection determines weakness targeting, splash, persistent damage, and debuffs. |
| One-use problem solving | Consumables | Alchemist is the class that makes consumables feel like a plan instead of clutter. |
| Formula expansion and downtime | Crafting | Formulas, item access, repairs, and downtime shape your real option list. |
| Inventory pressure | Bulk And Carrying Capacity | Alchemists carry a lot. Pretending Bulk is fake is how the backpack starts judging you. |
| Bomb backup weapons | Ranged Weapons | A simple ranged backup matters when bombs are not worth spending. |
| Firearms and ammunition | Guns & Gears | Firearm campaigns make alchemical ammunition and reload plans more relevant. |
| Persistent damage | Persistent Damage | Sticky and persistent damage bomb plans need the rule, not just the damage die. |
Monster Core Matchups
Monster Core is not just GM reading for Alchemists. Creature traits, weaknesses, resistances, immunities, movement modes, senses, and saving throw profiles are part of the class's operating manual.
| Enemy clue | Feat and item response |
|---|---|
| Weakness to a damage type | Bomb variety and formula planning rise. |
| Poison immunity | Toxicologist pivots to bombs, support elixirs, or ally buffs. |
| High Fortitude | Do not force poison or mutagen-adjacent save plans unless the payoff is worth it. |
| Low Reflex or clustered enemies | Splash and bomb control improve. |
| Flying or distant enemies | Far Lobber, range, mobility elixirs, and ranged backup matter. |
| Invisible or hidden enemies | Perception support, vision elixirs, scouting, and skill coverage matter. |
Party Pairings
| Party ally | Alchemist feat value |
|---|---|
| Fighter | Loves off-guard, debuffs, weakness discovery, and mutagen or elixir support. |
| Rogue | Benefits from off-guard setups, poison plans, scouting, and skill synergy. |
| Ranger | Likes damage-type answers, bombs, poisons, movement elixirs, and target-focused pressure. |
| Champion | Appreciates defensive elixirs, antidotes, antiplagues, and support before the front line collapses. |
| Cleric | Pairs well with Chirurgeon because divine healing and alchemical prevention solve different moments. |
| Investigator | Recall Knowledge, Devise a Stratagem, and item targeting make both classes better. |
The party warning is simple: an Alchemist built for handing out items needs allies who will actually use items. If the table refuses, build more self-contained.
General, Skill, And Ancestry Feat Support
Do not spend every class feat trying to patch non-class problems. Some problems belong to other feat slots.
| Problem | Better place to check first |
|---|---|
| Low initiative, senses, scouting | Skill Feats, Perception and skills |
| Poor mobility | Ancestry Feats, Acrobatics, Athletics, elixirs |
| Weak defenses | General Feats, armor, saves, shields, magic items |
| Item access and formulas | Crafting, downtime, GM treasure, factions |
| Too many actions | Class feats, three-action economy, party planning |
The best Alchemist builds spend class feats on the class engine and use other feat slots to shore up the chassis.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| Taking every bomb feat on a non-Bomber | You may spend half your class feats improving a plan you do not use enough. |
| Building poison-only | Some monsters and adventures will make you very sad. |
| Ignoring formulas | A feat that improves an item family is only as good as the formulas you can access. |
| Forgetting free hands | Quick Alchemy and item use still care about hands and tools. |
| Hoarding consumables | The class makes answers. Use them before the answer becomes irrelevant. |
| Healing too late | Chirurgeon is strongest when it prevents spirals, not when it spends every turn chasing 0 HP. |
| Treating mutagen drawbacks as flavor | The drawback is part of the cost. Build around it or do not drink it. |
GM Advice For Alchemist Feats
GM Core context matters because Alchemist power is deeply tied to access and encounter variety. You do not need to give the Alchemist every formula for free. You do need to make formulas, alchemical treasure, labs, downtime, shops, mentors, and monster clues visible enough that the class can play its own game.
Good rewards include formulas that match recent threats, alchemical ammunition for a Guns & Gears campaign, antidotes before a disease-heavy arc, labs before downtime, and clues that let Toxicologists identify when poison is or is not worth attempting.
Bad rewards are random formulas nobody can use, poison-heavy encounters after a player built poison without warning, or never letting the party buy or research the items the class is built around. Scarcity is a campaign style. Silence is just bad calibration.
Hot Take
Hot Take: Alchemist feat value is mostly turn quality, not novelty. Quick Bomber, reliable delivery, splash control, healing reach, mutagen management, and formula access are the picks that turn prepared items into usable answers.
