The short answer

Choose a general feat that fixes a problem your character or party repeatedly faces, such as initiative, durability, a weak save, mobility, recovery, armor or shield access, or a missing skill role. A skill feat is often the better use of the slot when it covers a recurring party job.

Introduction

General feats are the unglamorous part of a PF2e build that keep the glamorous part alive. They rarely make the character concept, but they decide whether the character starts fights on time, survives the second crit, carries the shield plan, recovers between encounters, or covers the skill nobody else wanted.

Hot Take: A general feat earns its slot when it buys something your class cannot reliably replace: initiative, durability, movement, recovery, or a party job that would otherwise go undone.

Level-Band Priorities

General feats arrive slowly enough that every pick should have a job.

Level bandBest priorities
Early levelsHP, initiative, armor or shield access, Medicine access, movement, and obvious build patches.
Mid levelsSave progression, recovery, stronger skill-feat routes, campaign utility, and gear support.
High levelsPatching the defense monsters keep attacking, improving party coverage, and preparing for hazards, magic, flight, and boss pressure.

Early General Feats

Early picks should be boring in the useful way. A fragile Wizard may need defense. A front-line Fighter, Champion, Barbarian, or Guardian may want durability, movement, or shield support. A party without recovery may need someone to invest in Medicine.

Early general feats should prevent the character from losing turns, dropping too fast, or being unable to participate. If the feat only makes the sheet look tidier, skip it.

Mid-Level General Feats

Mid-level general feats should react to what the campaign has proven. If enemies keep targeting Will, Fortitude, Reflex, or Perception, save progression becomes more attractive. If the GM uses travel, hazards, watches, fatigue, disease, poison, or strict downtime, utility and recovery choices rise. If the campaign is all tactical combat, personal defenses and action efficiency win.

High-Level General Feats

High-level general feats should support the character's weakest repeated defense or the party's weakest repeated procedure. At this point, monsters are more likely to fly, grab, frighten, poison, blast areas, punish positioning, and attack weak saves. A general feat that raises a bad defense can outperform a cute upgrade to something you already do well.

General Feat Categories Ranked

Durability And Recovery ●

Durability feats are strong because PF2e encounter math is not gentle. Toughness-style HP and recovery support helps almost everyone, especially frontliners, low-HP casters, and characters who repeatedly draw focus.

Best users:

  • Guardian, Champion, Fighter, and Barbarian frontliners.
  • Wizard, Witch, Sorcerer, and Psychic casters who get targeted.
  • Any character in a campaign with long adventuring days.

Initiative And Awareness ●

Initiative feats are better than they look because acting earlier prevents damage, enables positioning, starts buffs, and lets control land before the monster spreads out. Incredible Initiative-style picks are rarely exciting, but going first is a feature pretending to be a timing roll.

Best users:

  • Casters who need to establish control.
  • Healers who want to prevent a collapse instead of repairing one.
  • Controllers like Commander, Druid, and Wizard.
  • Rogues and Investigators who care about setup.

Save And Perception Patches ●

Canny Acumen-style improvements are strongest when one defense is repeatedly attacked. Do not take this because "more numbers good." Take it because the table keeps proving that your Reflex, Fortitude, Will, or Perception is where enemies cash checks.

Best users:

  • Low-Will martials in fear, charm, or control-heavy campaigns.
  • Low-Reflex armor users facing blasts and hazards.
  • Low-Fortitude casters facing poison, disease, grabs, or body-control effects.
  • Characters who keep losing initiative or missing ambush cues.

Armor And Shield Access ●

Armor Proficiency and Shield Block are build changers, not automatic picks. They are excellent when they support the character's math, hands, Bulk, action economy, and gear progression. They are bad when they create a new maintenance problem the build cannot afford.

Ask these before taking armor or shield access:

  • Can your Strength and Dexterity support the armor?
  • Can your Bulk budget handle it?
  • Will you keep armor runes current?
  • Do you have an action to Raise a Shield?
  • Does the class already have a better defensive loop?

Use armor, bulk and encumbrance, shields, and runes before committing.

Movement ●

Fleet-style movement is good because positioning is good. It is best on melee characters who need to reach targets, skirmishers who need to reset, and casters who need one fewer action to escape danger.

Move it up when:

  • The campaign uses large maps.
  • Terrain and hazards matter.
  • The character is melee with no built-in mobility.
  • The GM uses objectives, rescues, retreats, and chase-like scenes.

Move it down when every combat is a small room and your class already has strong movement compression.

Skill-Feat Access ●

General feat slots can often become the party's missing skill infrastructure. That matters more than a tiny personal upgrade when nobody can heal, identify monsters, repair shields, handle locks, or talk to people without making the room worse.

High-value skill routes:

  • Medicine for recovery.
  • Athletics for physical control.
  • Crafting for repair, alchemy-adjacent play, shields, and gear.
  • Stealth for scouting.
  • Thievery for locks, traps, and devices.
  • Diplomacy, Deception, and Intimidation for social pressure.

Best Picks By Class Type

Class typeGeneral feat priorities
Front-line martialToughness-style durability, Fleet-style movement, shield support, save patches, Medicine or Athletics.
Ranged martialInitiative, mobility, Perception, backup defense, Stealth, Medicine, and escape support.
Prepared casterInitiative, defense, save patches, armor if practical, Medicine or knowledge skills.
Spontaneous casterInitiative, durability, armor if practical, social or knowledge skill-feat access.
Skill classSkill-feat access, initiative, durability, and the defense enemies keep testing.
Pet or summon userInitiative, action economy, Medicine or Nature support, and defenses that keep concentration-like plans from collapsing.

Party Coverage Checklist

Party gapGeneral feat answer
Nobody heals between fightsMedicine skill-feat route, recovery support, or durability that lowers healing demand.
Everyone loses initiativeInitiative and Perception support.
Shields break constantlyCrafting support, repair tools, backup shields, and treasure planning.
Casters are always targetedArmor, Shield Block, mobility, save patches, or better initiative.
Travel is punishingSurvival, movement, carrying, weather, fatigue, and exploration utility.
Monsters keep exploiting one savePatch that save instead of making your best save prettier.

GM Core And Equipment Context

GM Core changes general feat value through table procedure. Hazards make Perception, Reflex, and exploration skills matter. Downtime makes Crafting and recovery better. Travel makes movement, Survival, and carrying support relevant. Social subsystems reward face skills. Treasure pacing decides whether armor and shield feats feel supported or expensive.

Equipment also changes the value of feats. A shield feat is better with a shield worth blocking with. Armor access is better when runes keep pace. Movement items can reduce pressure on Fleet-style choices. Skill items can reduce the need to spend a general feat on a marginal skill patch.

Common Mistakes

  • Taking a defensive feat for a defense monsters never attack.
  • Taking armor access without checking Strength, Dexterity, Bulk, and rune costs.
  • Taking Shield Block and never raising a shield.
  • Ignoring Medicine because healing "belongs" to the Cleric.
  • Taking flavor-only feats when the party has glaring practical gaps.
  • Forgetting that a skill feat can be the best general feat choice.
