Introduction
Champion feats are not about looking holy while standing in expensive metal. They are about making enemy decisions worse. If the monster attacks your ally, your reaction punishes it. If the monster attacks you, your armor, shield, and divine resilience make that plan inefficient. If the monster walks away, your positioning should make that cost actions.
This guide uses the Player Core 2 Champion as the baseline, with Player Core rules, GM Core encounter and treasure expectations, Monster Core enemy pressure, and Treasure Vault Remastered equipment context. It ranks feat choices by repeated table value, not by how impressive the feat name sounds when read aloud.

Rating Legend
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Excellent default or build-defining pick |
| ● | Strong when the build supports it |
| ● | Campaign-specific, narrow, or action-hungry |
| ● | Usually worse than a simpler option |
Prerequisite Warnings
Champion feat prerequisites are stricter than they look because cause, blessing, sanctification, deity, aura positioning, reaction economy, shield setup, and focus spell support all matter. Verify every named Champion feat against Player Core 2 before building around it. A feat can be excellent and still fail your character if the cause, blessing, alignment tone, gear, or table assumptions do not match.
| Warning | Why it matters | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Cause gates | Justice, Liberation, Redemption, Grandeur, Obedience, Desecration, and Iniquity do different jobs. Their cause feats are not interchangeable. | Start with the Champion class guide, then follow the feat line for your actual cause. |
| Blessing requirements | Blessed Shield, Blessed Armament, and Blessed Swiftness push different gear and action plans. | Match blessing feats to shields, weapons, runes, or movement. |
| Reaction conflict | Champion reaction, Shield Block, and some feat reactions compete for the same limited reaction budget. | Read reactions and decide which trigger is supposed to win most rounds. |
| Aura positioning | Champion's Aura is short enough that bad movement can turn strong feats off. | Compare your plan with flanking and positioning, movement actions, and party formation. |
| Deity and sanctification limits | Domain, devotion, holy, unholy, edict, and anathema choices can change both mechanics and campaign tone. | Use Religion and session zero before committing to divine or unholy feat chains. |
| Focus spell action cost | Domain and devotion spell feats are only good if your Charisma, focus pool, and action economy support casting them. | Compare against focus spells, divine spells, and the three-action economy. |
| Sourcebook limits | This guide is Player Core 2-first. Add non-core Champion options only when the source is available and approved for the campaign. | Keep source-limited rankings source-limited until the relevant book is available. |
Champion prerequisites are not fine print. They are the whole class saying, "stand in the right place and mean it."
Trap Options To Watch
| Trap | Why it fails | Better move |
|---|---|---|
| Shield feats without shield investment | A shield feat does not fix a weak, broken, or under-runed shield plan. | Build around shields, repairs, backup shields, and reaction priority. |
| Deity feats for flavor only | A domain spell that never gets cast is not a feat. It is a decorative citation. | Pick deity options with repeatable defensive, mobility, control, or support value. |
| Unholy feats in a heroic party | The mechanics can work, but the table may not want that campaign. | Get explicit buy-in through session zero. |
| Reaction pileups | Shield Block, Champion reaction, and feat reactions can all ask for the same once-per-round resource. | Choose one primary reaction plan, then add secondary tools that do not constantly collide. |
| Aura feats without formation discipline | Aura upgrades look great until the Bard, Wizard, and Rogue are standing outside the bubble. | Coordinate party positioning with combat and encounter expectations. |
Fast Recommendations
| Champion plan | Best feat direction | Best support links |
|---|---|---|
| Shield defender | Shield Warden, Quick Shield Block, Shield of Reckoning-style support | Shields, armor, reactions |
| Justice reach protector | Nimble Reprisal, reach weapons, reaction positioning | Weapons, flanking, movement |
| Liberation bodyguard | Unimpeded Step, movement support, anti-grapple positioning | Grapple actions, conditions, Athletics |
| Redemption protector | Weight of Guilt, defensive aura tools, social/deity support | Diplomacy, Religion, session zero |
| Grandeur defender | Brilliant Flash, light/reveal pressure, aura defense | Monster traits, stealth in combat, perception-adjacent play |
| War-minded Champion | Blessed Armament, Smite-style offense, weapon and rune support | Runes, strike actions, magic items |
Hot Take: A Champion's reaction is the class's most valuable feat test. If a choice does not make that reaction more reliable, better placed, or easier to afford alongside Shield Block, it needs a clear payoff elsewhere.

Level 1-4 Feat Priorities
| Feat or feat family | Who should take it |
|---|---|
| Nimble Reprisal ● | Justice Champions. Extending Retributive Strike's practical reach is exactly what the cause wants. |
| Unimpeded Step ● | Liberation Champions in terrain-heavy, monster-grapple, or tactical-map campaigns. |
| Weight of Guilt ● | Redemption Champions who want to punish casters or mental-stat enemies with stupefied pressure instead of only enfeebled pressure. |
| Brilliant Flash ● | Grandeur Champions who want Flash of Grandeur to set up party offense with off-guard pressure. |
| Deity's Domain-style focus access ● | Champions whose deity domain spell gives a repeatable defensive, mobility, or support tool they will actually cast. |
| Shield support openers ● | Shield Champions who want the gear plan to be more than "I own a shield and hope." |
| Unholy cause feat openers ● | Obedience, Desecration, and Iniquity builds in campaigns that explicitly support unholy Champion play. |
Level 6-10 Feat Priorities
| Feat or feat family | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Shield Warden-style ally blocking ● | Turns shield investment into real bodyguard play. Excellent for Champions who stand beside fragile allies. |
| Quick Shield Block-style reaction relief ● | Solves the biggest Champion shield problem: Shield Block and Champion reaction fighting over the same reaction. |
| Aura expansion and aura utility ● | Champion's Aura is the class's geometry. Making it easier to cover allies makes your whole kit better. |
| Advanced Deity's Domain ● | Strong when the advanced domain spell is repeatable and relevant. Weak if it adds a focus spell you rarely cast. |
| Smite-style offense ● | Good for Champions who already have the defensive job covered and need enemy punishment. |
| Mount or mobility support ● | Strong on open maps and travel-heavy campaigns, weaker in cramped dungeons where the mount spends the session looking at doorframes. |
| Narrow sanctification counters ● | Excellent in fiend, undead, holy, or unholy campaigns; mediocre when enemy traits never care. |
This tier is where Champion stops being a durable martial and becomes party infrastructure. Read reactions, three-action economy, and encounter building together: your feat value depends on enemy target choice and map layout.
Level 12-20 Feat Priorities
| Feat or feat family | Best use |
|---|---|
| Shield of Reckoning-style reaction packages ● | Premium shield Champion payoff. The more your reaction can protect allies and manage incoming damage, the more the class feels complete. |
| Exalted reaction upgrades ● | Cause reactions scale into party-facing moments. Take upgrades that make your chosen cause matter to more allies or more situations. |
| Greater aura and divine protection feats ● | Strong in hard encounters where saving throws, resistances, and positioning decide survival. |
| High-level devotion spell support ● | Focus tools are excellent if you have the Charisma, focus pool, and action space to use them. |
| Weapon-capstone offense ● | Best for Blessed Armament, Justice, or two-handed Champions who still maintain their protection job. |
| Unholy late feats ● | Good in villain, antihero, or morally dark campaigns. Risky in standard heroic parties. |
High-level Champion feats should either protect several people, solve reaction conflict, punish enemies at scale, or turn your aura into a real battlefield rule. If the feat only adds a personal trick, compare it against what the whole party loses.
Cause-Specific Feat Plans
| Cause | Feat plan |
|---|---|
| Justice | Prioritize Nimble Reprisal, reach weapons, reaction range, Smite-style punishment, and positioning. Justice wants enemies to regret attacking anyone but you. |
| Liberation | Prioritize Unimpeded Step, movement support, anti-grapple play, and aura positioning. Monster Core creatures with grab, immobilize, and forced movement make this cause shine. |
| Redemption | Prioritize Weight of Guilt, defensive support, social skill backing, and options that reinforce the heroic mercy premise. Do not pick Redemption if the party hates moral friction. |
| Grandeur | Prioritize Brilliant Flash, reveal effects, radiant defense, and aura support. It is best against hidden, invisible, deceptive, or light-sensitive encounter pressure. |
| Obedience | Prioritize Iron Repercussions-style punishment and control only in an unholy-friendly campaign. It wants enemies to choose between obedience and consequences. |
| Desecration | Prioritize Ongoing Selfishness-style durability and retaliation. This is a self-protective unholy tank, not the normal ally-first Champion. |
| Iniquity | Prioritize Vicious Vengeance-style revenge damage and offensive pressure. Fun, dangerous, and very table-dependent. |
Blessing And Feat Pairings
| Blessing | Feat plan |
|---|---|
| Blessed Shield ● | Take shield feats, invest in shield gear, and solve reaction competition. Best default for protectors. |
| Blessed Armament ● | Take weapon support, Smite-style offense, and rune planning. Best when your deity weapon is actually part of the turn. |
| Blessed Swiftness ● | Take movement, aura, mount, or positioning support. Best in open maps and mobile parties. |
Second Blessing can patch the build. Shield plus Swiftness is the strongest pure defender package. Armament plus Shield is the clean weapon-and-board divine striker path.
Skill Feats That Matter
| Skill lane | Champion value |
|---|---|
| Religion ● | Deity, sanctification, rituals, divine Recall Knowledge, and faith scenes. You are trained here for a reason. |
| Athletics ● | Trip, Grapple, Shove, Disarm, and control actions keep enemies inside your defensive geometry. |
| Medicine ● | Lay on hands is good, but Medicine preserves focus and spell resources while giving emergency redundancy. |
| Crafting ● | Shield repair, gear maintenance, and item use matter for shield Champions. |
| Diplomacy ● | Great for Redemption, Justice, deity politics, and social campaigns. |
| Intimidation ● | Good third action for severe Champions and unholy pressure builds. |
Use skill feats, general feats, and ancestry feats to cover mobility, durability, senses, and recovery without spending class feats on side problems.
Equipment Pairings
| Equipment | Why it affects feats |
|---|---|
| Shields | Shield feats require real shield investment. Hardness, repairs, and replacement shields matter. |
| Armor | Champion defense assumes current armor and runes. Legendary armor later does not excuse sloppy gear now. |
| Weapon runes | Blessed Armament and Smite-style offense need current runes to stay relevant. |
| Reach weapons | Justice reactions and ally protection improve when your threatened area grows. |
| Consumables | Mobility, resistance, healing, and condition answers keep class feats focused on defense. |
| Magic items by level | GM Core treasure expectations decide whether your shield, armor, and weapon feats feel supported. |
Monster Core And GM Core Pressure
Champion feat value changes with enemy behavior. If enemies never attack allies, reaction-protection feats lose value. If enemies grab, flank, target casters, fly, impose fear, or use invisibility, the right Champion feats can define the encounter.
| Repeated table problem | Champion answer |
|---|---|
| Enemies focus allies | Cause reaction upgrades, aura positioning, shield ally protection |
| Enemies focus you | Shield Block, armor, Blessed Shield, self-defense, Medicine support |
| Grabs and immobilization | Liberation feats, Athletics, positioning, condition awareness |
| Hidden or invisible attackers | Grandeur feats, light/reveal support, Perception and party detection |
| Fiends, undead, holy/unholy conflict | Sanctification-aware feats, Religion, divine gear, GM session-zero alignment |
| Spread-out maps | Blessed Swiftness, movement support, aura discipline |
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Standing too far from allies | Champion's Aura is 15 feet. Build and play around that number. |
| Blocking every hit | Your Champion reaction may be more valuable than Shield Block. Choose the reaction that changes the enemy turn most. |
| Taking deity feats for flavor only | Domain and devotion feats need action space, focus support, and real table use. |
| Stacking too many reaction feats | Decide whether Champion reaction, Shield Block, or another reaction is the default answer. |
| Playing unholy without buy-in | Get table permission first. The problem is not rules legality; it is campaign fit. |
| Ignoring Athletics | A defender who cannot Trip, Grapple, or reposition enemies is easier to walk around. |
Party Pairings
Champion loves allies who stay close enough to protect and dangerous enough to punish enemy mistakes. Cleric stacks divine support and recovery. Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, and Ranger appreciate protection while they deal damage. Bard, Wizard, and Witch love a Champion who actually stands where the monsters want to go.
