Introduction
Magus feat advice lives or dies by one question: does this choice make the big turn easier to execute? Spellstrike already competes with positioning, defenses, spell slots, and recovery time. The six verified options from Lost Omens: Rival Academies add a second decision: are you taking broadly useful water-themed support, or committing to Resurgent Maelstrom's break-and-replace weapon engine?
This guide ranks that specific source line. It is not a claim that every Magus feat in print has been reviewed. Use it with the Magus class guide, Magus spell guide, general feats, equipment guides, and three-action economy.

Source Scope And Fast Answer
The Resurgent Maelstrom material comes from the Monastery Unbreaking Waves section of Lost Omens: Rival Academies. Every option below is Uncommon. Convergent Tides and Crosscurrent Counter are general Magus feats; the other four require the Resurgent Maelstrom hybrid study. That distinction matters more than their level numbers.
| Guide Need | Reader Path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Class loop and hybrid studies | Magus class guide | Establishes the Spellstrike loop, study choice, spell plan, and equipment baseline. |
| Spell delivery | Magus spell guide | Helps prevent a flashy feat from consuming the spell resources the build needs. |
| Tactical turns | Three-action economy | Shows why an added action must pay for itself immediately. |
| Improvised gear and replacements | Equipment guides | The study chain is only as good as the table's supply of legal, expendable objects. |
Rating Legend
| Recommendation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Broadly excellent for the class loop or a common Magus role. |
| ● | Strong when the build, party, or campaign supports it. |
| ● | Playable, but narrow, gated, or expensive. |
| ● | Usually a poor fit because it adds pressure without solving a real problem. |
Resurgent Maelstrom Feat Rankings
| Feat | Access and decision | Why it earns that recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| ● Convergent Tides | General Magus, level 2 | Useful when water-created difficult terrain is actually recurring. It has no study lock, but its payoff is narrow enough that most campaigns will not feel it every session. |
| ● Shattering Spellstrike | Resurgent Maelstrom, level 4 | A deliberate burst option: it asks for Arcane Cascade, an improvised weapon, and a willingness to break that weapon during Spellstrike. Take it only when the prop supply and the build's plan make the sacrifice routine rather than disruptive. |
| ● Surface Tension | Resurgent Maelstrom, level 6 | It turns a broken improvised weapon into one short window of better follow-through, then removes it from the plan. Strong inside the chain, but not a reason to enter the chain without reliable objects. |
| ● Crosscurrent Counter | General Magus, level 8 | A reaction against being grabbed or restrained solves a common frontline failure state. Its Athletics counterplay rewards a Magus who already values physical skills, and it does not demand the hybrid study. |
| ● Whirlpool's Pull | Resurgent Maelstrom, level 8 | This is the chain's practical glue: it gets an unattended object into hand and leaves room for a one-action cantrip or conflux spell. It is valuable only to a study build that can expect suitable objects nearby. |
| ● Maelstrom Flow | Resurgent Maelstrom, level 10 | A limited-use payoff that temporarily improves the improvised weapon before the engine consumes it. The hourly limit, object restrictions, and replacement burden keep it behind more dependable Magus tools. |

Hot Take: Crosscurrent Counter is the strongest blind pick in this source set because it answers a common Magus failure state. The Resurgent chain pays off only when disposable weapons are already part of the plan.
General Magus Picks
Convergent Tides is a campaign read, not a default. It quietly helps when water terrain is a recurring obstacle, but its value falls away if the GM rarely uses water hazards or water-created difficult terrain. Do not take it because the study's name sounds right; take it because the maps make it matter.
Crosscurrent Counter is easier to recommend. A Magus caught grabbed or restrained can lose positioning, actions, and its chance to deliver Spellstrike. The reaction asks the player to keep Athletics credible, so check the Athletics guide before treating it as automatic, but the trigger is useful even outside Resurgent Maelstrom.
The Break-And-Replace Chain
Resurgent Maelstrom rewards a different kind of preparation. Shattering Spellstrike spends an improvised weapon for a stronger moment. Surface Tension gives a broken weapon one last useful turn. Whirlpool's Pull solves the awkward question of where the next object comes from while preserving room for a one-action spell. Maelstrom Flow provides an occasional higher ceiling before the weapon is gone.
That sequence can be memorable in a ruin, shipyard, workshop, or crowded city fight. It can also be dead weight in a campaign where objects are scarce, the GM treats scenery as unavailable, or the party cannot afford to destroy useful gear. Confirm how improvised weapons, unattended objects, and replacement gear work at the table before committing multiple class-feat slots.
Build-Specific Feat Plans
Tidal Improviser Magus
This is the actual home for the study-locked feats. Start by asking whether the campaign produces objects you can legally use and discard. Then check the hybrid study's normal weapon plan against weapons, runes, and Crafting. If that foundation is shaky, take Crosscurrent Counter or ordinary Magus support instead of forcing the chain.
| Feat | What to favour |
|---|---|
| ● Crosscurrent Counter | A reliable defensive release valve when Athletics and reaction space are available. |
| ● Whirlpool's Pull | The most useful study-specific pickup once the campaign clearly supports expendable objects. |
| ● Shattering Spellstrike and Surface Tension | Take together only when breaking and replacing weapons is an intentional, repeatable part of play. |
| ● Maelstrom Flow | A campaign-dependent flourish, not a substitute for a stable baseline weapon plan. |
Melee Striker Magus
This version wants the cleanest possible path to one good hit. It cares about accuracy, reach, mobility, defenses, and action recovery. Crosscurrent Counter rises when the Magus expects to be in monster reach; Convergent Tides does not replace a general plan for bad terrain.
Best supporting guides: strike actions, flanking and positioning, three-action economy, weapons, and runes.
Shield Magus
A shield Magus already has a crowded action budget. Do not add a study chain that needs prop retrieval and breakage unless it clearly solves a recurring table problem. Review armor, shields and Shield Block, reactions, and Crafting before spending feats on another resource loop.
Ranged Magus
A ranged Magus cares more about line of effect, cover, range increments, and enemy movement than about scavenging a close object. The Resurgent chain is usually a style choice here, while Crosscurrent Counter remains a useful answer if a creature closes and restrains the character.
Best supporting guides: movement actions, encounter building, monster stat blocks, and weapons.
Spell, Equipment, And Skill Checks
The feat ranking is only one part of the decision. A Magus using Shattering Spellstrike still needs a spell that is worth spending, a route to the target, and a backup turn when the improvised weapon is gone.
| Concern | Useful guide | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Spell delivery | Magus spell guide | Keep enough spells and cantrips for ordinary turns; do not spend the whole plan on one flashy strike. |
| Action pressure | Three-action economy | Compare every pickup, setup, and spell against movement and recharging Spellstrike. |
| Improvised equipment | Equipment guides | Decide which objects are safe to break and how the character returns to its regular weapon. |
| Athletics response | Athletics guide | Crosscurrent Counter is better when the character can win its check. |
| Repairs and recovery | Crafting guide | Repair support matters for shield or gear-heavy builds, but it does not make disposable objects infinite. |
Prerequisite And Access Warnings
| Check | Why it changes the ranking |
|---|---|
| Uncommon access | Confirm GM approval for every feat in this source set before building around it. |
| General versus study-locked access | Convergent Tides and Crosscurrent Counter work for a general Magus; the other four require Resurgent Maelstrom. |
| Arcane Cascade and Spellstrike timing | Shattering Spellstrike has a tighter state requirement than a passive terrain or reaction option. |
| Object supply | The study-specific chain needs unattended objects and a table that supports improvised weapons. |
| Breakage cost | Some objects have hardness, value, curse, artifact, or practical replacement concerns that make destruction a poor trade. |
| Reaction competition | Crosscurrent Counter is only as good as the reactions the build gives up. |
| Campaign fit | Water terrain helps Convergent Tides; dense, object-rich maps help Resurgent Maelstrom; neither assumption is universal. |
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| Treating the source line as a full Magus tier list | These six feats are verified; the rest of the class still needs source-by-source review. |
| Taking the study because the burst sounds cinematic | The payoff needs objects, actions, and a replacement plan, not just a dramatic moment. |
| Ignoring access | Uncommon is a real campaign gate, not decorative text. |
| Counting an object twice | A weapon that will be broken cannot also be the plan for the next turn. |
| Overloading reactions | A reaction feat is only good if the trigger happens and the reaction is not already spoken for. |
| Forgetting the GM's map style | Open wilderness, bare battle maps, and object-rich interiors give this source line very different value. |
Further Source Coverage Needed
This update completes the verified Resurgent Maelstrom line. A broader Magus feat guide still needs direct source work for the remaining class feats, study-by-study comparisons, complete level paths, and exact interaction checks. That work belongs in this existing guide, not in thin one-feat articles.
