Introduction
The Wizard is strongest when the spellbook is treated like a toolkit, not a diary of favorite explosions. Your best spell is often the one that answers the encounter shape, weak save, terrain, hazard, or campaign problem the party discovered before the fight.

Rating Key
| Marker | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Avoid. |
| ● | Situational. |
| ● | Good. |
| ● | Fantastic. |
Wizard Spell Priorities
| Priority | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Spellbook depth ● | The spellbook is the class's real flex. Learn more than you prepare and let the adventure decide what matters today. |
| Battlefield control ● | Grease, Slow, walls, terrain, flight answers, and action denial often beat raw damage because they change what enemies can do. |
| Arcane utility ● | Detect Magic, Read Aura, Dispel Magic, Fly, Water Breathing, Teleport, Scrying, and other tools make Wizard matter outside initiative. |
| Defensive survival ● | Mystic Armor, Shield, Blur, Invisibility, movement, positioning, and defensive items keep the most useful brain in the party attached to the body. |
| Damage as your only plan ● | Fireball and Chain Lightning are good. A Wizard who only wants damage is ignoring half the reason the class is feared. |
Thesis Spell Plans
| Arcane thesis | Spell behavior |
|---|---|
| Spell Substitution ● | The easiest default. Scouting, Recall Knowledge, and 10-minute pauses become better daily prep. Learn utility broadly. |
| Spell Blending ● | Strong for high-rank pressure and optimizer play. You trade breadth for bigger moments, so your spellbook and items need to cover gaps. |
| Staff Nexus ● | Excellent if you actually plan around staves and wands. The thesis gets worse if the staff is an afterthought. |
| Improved Familiar Attunement ● | Good for scouting, utility, and familiar tricks. Less explosive than Spell Substitution, but useful in clue-heavy campaigns. |
| Experimental Spellshaping ● | Can be good when Reach, Widen, Conceal, or similar spellshape play is central. Middling if you only remember it exists after casting. |
School and Curriculum Spell Plans
| School plan | Best spell behavior |
|---|---|
| Battle Magic ● | The clean beginner combat school: force, elemental, protection, area damage, resistances, anti-flight, and obvious fight buttons. |
| Mentalism ● | Illusions, social magic, debuffs, and Will pressure. Excellent when creature traits and senses support it; weaker into constructs, mindless undead, oozes, and weird immunities. |
| Civic Wizardry ● | Construction, movement, walls, logistics, travel, and utility. Less glamorous than Battle Magic, often better at winning actual adventures. |
| Ars Grammatica ● | Wards, runes, language, dispelling, support, and magical literacy. Great in campaigns with investigation and high magic. |
| Protean Form ● | Form spells, movement, resilience, and transformation. Needs strong table understanding of forms and encounter positioning. |
| Unified Magical Theory ● | Flexible generalist play with a stronger arcane bond rhythm. Great for experienced players, less helpful for new Wizards who need curriculum guardrails. |
Academy School Focus and Spell Choices
The Academy of the Reclamation, Rooted Wisdom, Kalistrade, and Gates are Uncommon options. Ask the GM about access before treating any of their curriculum spells as part of the default spellbook.
| Academy option | Prepared-list decision |
|---|---|
| Reclamation ● | Pick it for recovery, rough terrain, and investigation. grasping vine gives a grounded-control answer, while unsettling knowledge rewards Will targets that cannot shrug off its mental and linguistic pressure. Keep bridge of vines for route problems and mental map for a campaign that turns location knowledge into a plan. |
| Rooted Wisdom ● | halcyon mists is a compact rescue spell when persistent damage or a fragile ally is the problem. At higher rank, call the ten lets the Wizard divide its work between protection and offense. Choose a branch for the job: Cascade Bearers for broad magic, Emerald Boughs for people and information, Rain-Scribes for exploration, Tempest-Sun for direct pressure, or Uzunjati for stories and mind magic. |
| Kalistrade ● | Strongest in intrigue, theft, and resource-conscious campaigns. unexpected windfall can slow a physical foe, while capital dividend gives a last-chance defensive reaction. The curriculum pays off when charm, invisibility, remote listening, and counter-deception have work to do. |
| Gates ● | Take it when party position is a recurring problem. friendly push moves a willing ally, but an upward move still needs a safe landing. rapid retreat is a sharp answer to a damaging trigger when an open destination exists. echo jump adds aggressive repositioning, and forest of gates becomes a late-campaign travel answer when the party can identify its destination. |
Spellbook Layers
| Spellbook layer | Examples and purpose |
|---|---|
| Cantrip baseline ● | Electric Arc, Shield, Detect Magic, Read Aura, Figment, Telekinetic Projectile, Ignition, and utility cantrips keep low-resource turns useful. |
| Low-rank staples ● | Force Barrage, Grease, Fear, Mystic Armor, Runic Weapon, Command, Illusory Object, Alarm, Air Bubble, and Gentle Landing cover combat and exploration. |
| Mid-rank swing spells ● | Blur, Invisibility, Dispel Magic, Haste, Slow, Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Revealing Light, See the Unseen, Fly, and Wall of Stone change fights. |
| High-rank answers ● | Wall of Force, Chain Lightning, Truesight, Banishment, Unfettered Movement, Teleport, Contingency, Energy Aegis, Foresight, Gate, and Manifestation solve severe problems. |
| Niche campaign pages ● | Water Breathing, Water Walk, Scrying, False Vision, Translate-style answers, and special protections belong in the spellbook or on scrolls when the campaign points at them. |

Daily Preparation by Level Band
| Level band | Prepare this way |
|---|---|
| Levels 1-4 ● | One control spell, one defense, one damage or force option, utility cantrips, and at least one spell that helps if the fight is not a straight damage race. |
| Levels 5-10 ● | Slow, Haste, Dispel Magic, mobility, area damage, anti-invisibility, and scroll-backed utility. This is where Wizard starts feeling like a planning problem for the GM. |
| Levels 11-16 ● | Walls, flight, high-rank control, strong defenses, true seeing effects, campaign travel, and spells that still matter when enemies save. |
| Levels 17-20 ● | Top-rank slots should either dominate a severe encounter, prevent disaster, move the campaign, or answer magic normal people should not have to think about. |
Items for Wizards
| Item | Wizard value |
|---|---|
| Backup spellbook ● | Losing the spellbook is not "interesting adversity." It is a financial jump scare. Protect your pages. |
| Scrolls and consumables ● | Put rare utility, emergency travel, special detection, and once-per-arc answers here. Scrolls are Wizard class features with price tags. |
| Staves and wands ● | Carry daily utility, defense, and theme packages. Staff Nexus especially wants this planning to be intentional. |
| Grimoires and spell tools ● | Use magic items by level and treasure access to reinforce your best spells instead of only buying dramatic robes. |
| Defensive gear ● | Worn and invested items, mobility, AC support, and saves keep Wizard from becoming the encounter's easiest thesis statement. |
Monster and GM Matchups
Wizard rewards teams that use creature traits, conditions, detection and senses, and checks and DCs. The arcane list has answers, but only if the party identifies the problem before spending the wrong spell into the wrong defense.
GM Core also changes Wizard strength. Hazards, environment, subsystems, and treasure by level reward spellbook depth. If the campaign never gives clues, downtime, research, scroll access, or treasure variety, Wizard loses part of the class's intended play.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Preparing the same spells every day ● | Let scouting, rumors, terrain, and enemy traits change the list. That is the class feature. |
| Learning only damage spells ● | Damage is one layer. Add control, defense, utility, movement, dispelling, and campaign answers. |
| Ignoring Arcana ● | Identify Magic, Learn a Spell, Borrow an Arcane Spell, and magical Recall Knowledge are part of Wizard power. |
| Refusing item support ● | A Wizard who will not buy scrolls is like a Fighter refusing weapons because hands are traditional. |
Hot Takes
Hot Take: Gates is often better than a damage-heavy curriculum when the party keeps losing turns to bad positioning. A safe ally move or a reaction teleport can erase the mistake that would have forced the party to spend its next round recovering.
