Introduction
The Oracle is the divine spontaneous caster that makes spell selection feel like a permanent life choice. A Cleric can prepare different answers tomorrow. An Oracle can swap slowly as levels change, but the day-to-day repertoire has to work right now.
That means the best Oracle spells are not just the best divine spells. They are the divine spells that survive spontaneous-caster pressure: broad use, good heightening, strong action economy, clear party role, and enough mystery support that the class does not feel like a Cleric who misplaced the font.
Use this with the divine spell guide, cantrip guide, combat spell guide, utility spell guide, heightening guide, Religion guide, and Medicine guide.

Oracle Spell Engine
| Engine Piece | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Divine spontaneous casting ● | Repeated staples, signature spells, and known answers that show up every adventuring day | Narrow spells are painful when learned permanently |
| Mystery spells ● | Patching divine gaps with fire, lightning, knowledge, mobility, healing, or martial tools | A granted spell is not automatically a good use of a slot |
| Revelation focus spells ● | Rechargeable mystery identity and routine encounter turns | Refocus windows and cursebound pressure matter |
| Cursebound abilities ● | Swing turns, mystery payoffs, and emergency pushes | Do not spend cursebound like it is a free snack bowl |
| Signature spells ● | Heightening heal, damage, and reliable staples without learning every rank | Bad signature choices make the repertoire stiff |
| Scrolls, wands, and staves ● | Rare cures, travel, detection, and situational divine answers | Forgetting items makes Oracle feel smaller than it is |
| Trying to learn every cool spell ● | Character-builder optimism | The repertoire is not a scrapbook |
Hot take: Oracle spell selection rewards boring competence. The dramatic curse engine is already dramatic. Your spells do not all need to arrive wearing a cape.

Mystery Spell Priorities
| Mystery | Spell Plan | Best Adds | Watch For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life ● | Healing, recovery, and party stability | Healing support, Life Link-style focus play, Medicine synergy | Your curse makes self-healing worse as pressure rises |
| Tempest ● | Divine caster with real storm offense | electric arc, thunderstrike, hydraulic torrent, chain lightning | Electricity resistance and ranged penalties can matter |
| Cosmos ● | Control, mobility, light/dark utility, and strange positioning | dizzying colors, darkness, moonlight bridge, void-themed focus pressure | Enfeebled and forced-movement penalties punish bad positioning |
| Flames ● | Fire blasting and area pressure | ignition, breathe fire, blazing bolt, fireball, fire focus tools | Fire resistance is common enough to require backup damage |
| Lore ● | Knowledge, investigation, and information advantage | read aura, mindlink, hypercognition, brain drain, Lore support | Perception, Will, and communication penalties are dangerous |
| Bones ● | Death magic, void/vitality themes, undead-facing campaigns | void warp, grim tendrils, false vitality, ghostly weapon | Vitality and void weakness can be rough in the wrong campaign |
| Ancestors ● | Society, spirit guidance, weakness reading, narrative play | guidance, ill omen, ghostly utility, Whispers of Weakness | Clumsy hurts AC, Reflex, and Dexterity skills |
| Battle ● | Defensive and martial-adjacent Oracle builds | shield, sure strike, weapon storm, weapon trance support | Spell weakness and save penalties make enemy casters scary |
The mystery spell question is simple: does the mystery add spells you would choose even if the mystery did not hand them to you? Tempest and Flames often say yes. Lore says yes at investigative tables. Battle says "please read the warning label."
Cantrips
| Cantrip | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Guidance ● | Turning important rolls into better odds | Timing limits mean it is not infinite bonus confetti |
| Detect Magic ● | Exploration, hazards, suspicious rooms, cursed loot | Detection is not identification |
| Shield ● | Caster defense and Battle Oracle turns | The block cooldown matters |
| Divine Lance ● | Sanctified ranged pressure | Spell attacks and sanctification context matter |
| Forbidding Ward ● | Protecting one ally against one dangerous enemy | Weak when enemy focus shifts constantly |
| Vitality Lash ● | Undead-heavy games | Much worse into ordinary enemies |
| Void Warp ● | Bones, harm-leaning, or void-themed Oracles | Not a universal damage button |
| Daze ● | Will-targeting mental pressure | Mental immunity and low impact hurt it |
| Light, Read Aura, Message, Know the Way, Prestidigitation ● | Utility and exploration | Useful, but do not overcrowd your cantrip suite |
Tempest and Flames change this section because their mystery spells can provide better offensive cantrips than the base divine list. If your mystery gives you a clean damage routine, your ordinary divine cantrips can lean harder into support and exploration.
1st-Rank Oracle Staples
| Spell | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Heal ● | Emergency recovery, signature spell scaling, undead punishment | Do not become a vending machine that only sells hit points |
| Bless ● | Party accuracy and crit math | Starts small and wants positioning |
| Fear ● | Boss debuffing and frightened pressure | Mental immunity and Will saves matter |
| Protection ● | Known enemy pressure and defensive setup | Weak when cast after the disaster |
| Sanctuary ● | Protecting yourself, a rescue target, or a fragile ally | The target needs to avoid breaking the spell's plan |
| Command ● | Action denial and enemy turn disruption | Language and Will saves can narrow use |
| Runic Weapon ● | Early martial damage support | Falls off once permanent weapon runes arrive |
| Harm ● | Bones, void offense, undead healing, harm-leaning concepts | Most Oracle parties prefer broader staples |
| Mystic Armor ● | Unarmored defense backup | Light armor and gear may solve the same problem |
| Air Bubble, Cleanse Cuisine, Create Water, Mending ● | Adventure-day utility | Better on scrolls unless the campaign demands them often |
For most Oracles, heal is the first signature spell conversation. If you do not make heal flexible, the party will eventually ask why the divine spontaneous caster brought philosophy to a bleeding problem.
2nd-Rank Oracle Staples
| Spell | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Dispel Magic ● | Magical hazards, enemy buffs, cursed effects, and hostile spell problems | Requires correct targeting and expectations |
| Resist Energy ● | Known energy damage | Poor when guessed blindly |
| Cleanse Affliction ● | Poison, disease, and similar pressure | Strong scroll candidate if rare |
| Clear Mind ● | Mental condition cleanup | Campaign-dependent but important |
| Sound Body ● | Physical condition cleanup | Better learned only if the table constantly needs it |
| Sure Footing ● | Terrain, trip, and movement-denial pressure | Less useful in flat-room combat |
| Silence ● | Anti-caster tactics and infiltration | Positioning matters; it is not automatic counter-magic |
| Revealing Light ● | Hidden, concealed, or darkness-based threats | Table-dependent |
| See the Unseen ● | Invisibility insurance | Often better on a wand or scroll |
| Status, Water Breathing, Water Walk, Translate, Augury ● | Travel, divination, and story utility | Usually wrong as permanent blind repertoire picks |
Oracle is where the "scroll versus known spell" argument gets real. cleanse affliction can save a campaign arc, but if the campaign never uses afflictions, you have learned a spell that sits there filing taxes.
3rd- and 4th-Rank Staples
| Spell | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Heroism ● | Buffing the ally whose rolls decide the fight | Choose the target who rolls most meaningfully |
| Fly ● | Verticality, hazards, reach problems, encounter bypass | Action timing and duration matter |
| Vital Beacon ● | Repeated recovery across a scene | Wants party coordination |
| Unfettered Movement ● | Movement denial, grapples, restraints, and rough terrain | Less urgent in simple damage fights |
| Blindness ● | Debilitating a dangerous target | Fortitude saves and boss reliability matter |
| Divine Wrath ● | Area sanctified pressure | Party and enemy sanctification choices matter |
| Holy Light ● | Anti-unholy and fiendish pressure | Trait-dependent |
| Crisis of Faith ● | Divine enemy punishment | Narrow target profile |
| Safe Passage ● | Hazard and travel problem solving | Usually an item spell |
| Talking Corpse ● | Investigation | Brilliant in mysteries, odd in pure dungeon crawls |
| Read Omens and other narrow divinations ● | Campaign guidance and religious investigation | Needs GM support and table appetite |
heroism is especially good on Oracle because it gives you a strong no-save turn. When your curse is already making life complicated, a spell that simply makes the party's best character better is a kindness.
5th- and 6th-Rank Staples
| Spell | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Breath of Life ● | Reaction rescue from a lethal moment | You must have it available at exactly the right time |
| Truesight ● | Illusions, invisibility, and magical deception | Overkill in mundane fights |
| Field of Life ● | Area healing and attrition control | Battlefield splitting hurts it |
| Raise Dead ● | Campaign continuity after death | Cost, access, and story tone matter |
| Banishment ● | Extraplanar enemy removal | Bad against ordinary local threats |
| Spiritual Guardian ● | Sustained protected pressure | Sustaining competes with movement, focus spells, and healing |
| Spirit Blast and Spellwrack ● | Spirit pressure and anti-magic offense | Check traits, saves, and party follow-up |
| Sending and Truespeech ● | Social, travel, and campaign coordination | Some campaigns make them luxury picks |
| Summon Celestial, Summon Monitor, Summon Fiend, Summon Dragon ● | Utility bodies and trait-based problem solving | Summons should solve a specific problem, not compete with martials |
This rank is also where staves and wands start doing serious work. A staff can broaden the Oracle's daily options without forcing permanent repertoire choices.
7th- Through 10th-Rank Staples
| Spell | Best Use | Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Aegis ● | Broad energy protection | Less urgent in campaigns with predictable damage |
| Regenerate ● | Major physical recovery | Still needs timing and action planning |
| Moment of Renewal ● | Party-wide reset | Expensive if used casually |
| Foresight ● | Apex defense for the party's most important character | Choose the target carefully |
| Revival ● | Catastrophe recovery | If you need it, the table is already sweating |
| Sunburst ● | Anti-undead and light pressure | Not the same value against ordinary foes |
| Divine Inspiration ● | Restoring important class resources | Party composition decides value |
| Interplanar Teleport and Gate ● | Planar travel and story movement | Campaign permission and consequences matter |
| Divine Decree, Avatar, Manifestation ● | Divine capstone moments | Not every problem needs the biggest possible miracle |
| Overwhelming Presence and darker divine finishers ● | Aggressive or tone-specific divine plans | Target traits, campaign tone, and table consent matter |
At high levels, Oracle spell picks should protect the campaign from disaster. If your top-rank slots are only doing "some damage, probably," the spell list has lost the argument.
Signature Spells
| Signature Candidate | Why It Works |
|---|---|
| Heal ● | Flexible heightening keeps your rescue button relevant at every level |
| Harm ● | Strong for Bones or void plans, but not every Oracle needs it |
| Fear ● | Debuff scaling and strong boss pressure, limited by mental immunity |
| Mystery damage spell ● | Supports Flames, Tempest, and some Cosmos plans, but needs damage-type awareness |
| Dispel Magic ● | Broad magical answer that requires good judgment and table rules clarity |
| Condition removal ● | Great in the right campaign, though scrolls may be a better home |
The best signature spells are the ones you will cast at multiple ranks without apologizing. If a signature spell only sounds clever in one hypothetical scene, put that scene on a scroll.
What Goes on Scrolls, Wands, and Staves
| Item Plan | Best Oracle Uses | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Scrolls ● | water breathing, water walk, translate, talking corpse, safe passage, rare removals, unusual detection | Scrolls protect the repertoire from once-per-arc spells |
| Wands ● | resist energy, see the unseen, status, daily defenses, travel support | A daily utility spell does not need to be a known spell |
| Staves ● | Divine support packages, healing backup, condition tools, and mystery-adjacent utility | Staves give flexibility without bloating the repertoire |
| Consumables ● | Emergency healing, anti-affliction help, antidotes, antiplagues, and adventuring gear | Items let Oracle spend slots on encounter-winning magic |
Use consumables, staves and wands, magic items by level, and treasure by level when building the non-repertoire side of the character.
Party and Monster Matchups
| Table Pressure | Oracle Spell Response | Supporting Guides |
|---|---|---|
| No Cleric in the party ● | Learn reliable healing, carry condition scrolls, invest in Medicine, and plan signature heal | Medicine, Dying and death |
| Undead-heavy arc ● | Vitality tools, heal, vitality lash, infuse vitality, holy light, Religion checks | Monsters, Creature traits |
| Enemy casters ● | dispel magic, silence, spellwrack, truesight, and careful cursebound timing | Checks and DCs, Actions and activities |
| High-damage bosses ● | heroism, protection, resist energy, breath of life, foresight, focus rescue | Encounter building, Combat spells |
| Hazard-heavy exploration ● | detect magic, read aura, resist energy, fly, safe passage, scroll utility | Hazards, Environment |
| Social and investigation games ● | Lore mystery tools, status, translate, truespeech, sending, rituals, Charisma skills | Social encounters, Diplomacy, Society |
Monster traits matter more than spell vibes. An Oracle who uses Recall Knowledge before casting will look much smarter than an Oracle who learns the hard way that the beautiful spell targeted the monster's best save.
Common Oracle Spell Mistakes
| Mistake | Why It Hurts | Better Move |
|---|---|---|
| Learning too many narrow answers ● | Spontaneous repertoire slots are permanent pressure | Put rare cures, travel, and detection on scrolls or wands |
Ignoring heal because it is obvious ● | The obvious spell is obvious because people keep almost dying | Make healing flexible, then add personality elsewhere |
| Picking mystery spells without backup damage types ● | Flames and Tempest can run into resistances | Carry divine staples, debuffs, and non-damage tools |
| Treating cursebound as free value ● | Curse drawbacks can define the rest of the fight | Spend cursebound when the benefit changes the scene |
| Skipping items ● | The repertoire has to do too many jobs | Buy scrolls, wands, staves, and consumables intentionally |
| Forgetting skills ● | Spell slots become routine chores | Use Religion, Medicine, Diplomacy, Society, and mystery skills |
Quick Build Lists
| Oracle Plan | Best Spell Priorities | Item Priorities |
|---|---|---|
| Main healer ● | heal, bless, condition cleanup, heroism, breath of life, moment of renewal | Condition scrolls, healer's tools, recovery consumables |
| Blaster mystery ● | Mystery damage, fear, heroism, dispel magic, defenses, backup divine damage | Wands for utility, scrolls for rare answers |
| Knowledge Oracle ● | Detection, divination, truesight, sending, social utility, defensive staples | Scrolls for campaign clues and day-specific magic |
| Battle Oracle ● | shield, sure strike, buffs, no-save support, healing, defensive magic | Armor, shields, runes, worn defensive items |
| Undead campaign Oracle ● | Vitality tools, heal, holy light, sunburst, Religion support, condition answers | Vitality and anti-affliction scrolls |
Hot Takes
Oracle is harder than Cleric because spontaneous divine casting punishes optimism. "I might need this once" is not a repertoire plan. It is a shopping list for scrolls.
The best Oracle damage spells often come from the mystery, not the base divine list. If you want divine blasting, pick a mystery that actually wants that job instead of yelling at divine lance until morale improves.
Battle Oracle is not a beginner spell plan. It can work, but it wants gear, defenses, action discipline, and a party that understands you are still a caster. The sword is part of the story, not permission to ignore your spell DC.
Life Oracle should still learn non-healing spells. If every turn is recovery, the party is not being supported; it is being slowly refunded.
