Introduction
Pathfinder 1e veterans have a real advantage when starting Pathfinder 2e Remastered. You already know fantasy adventuring, tactical maps, class identity, spell lists, feats, monsters, treasure, and the quiet joy of reading rules text like it owes you money.

PF2e is a different engine. Its action economy, math, degrees of success, character building, skills, multiclassing, encounter building, and GM tools use different assumptions.
PF2e still rewards system mastery, with that mastery expressed through different choices.
Use this with the beginner guide, character creation, first-session guide, PF2e vs 5e, rules hub, combat hub, skills hub, classes hub, archetypes hub, and GM guide.
Quick Comparison
| Topic | Pathfinder 1e habit | Pathfinder 2e habit |
|---|---|---|
| Turn structure | Standard, move, swift, immediate, full-round, five-foot step | Three actions and a reaction when triggered |
| Attacking | Full-attack routines are central for many martials | Multiple Attack Penalty discourages mindless repeated Strikes |
| Critical results | Threat ranges, confirmation rolls, weapon multipliers | Degrees of success, usually crit by beating the DC by 10 |
| Bonus stacking | Many typed bonuses and build-driven stacking | Tighter bonus categories and more controlled math |
| Character builds | Long chains, dips, prestige classes, prerequisites | Class chassis plus regular feat lanes and archetypes |
| Skills | Rank investment and broad skill lists | Proficiency ranks, level scaling, defined skill actions |
| Multiclassing | Level-based class mixing and prestige classes | Archetypes and dedication feats |
| Monster math | More swingy challenge assumptions | Level-based encounter building with clearer threat bands |
| Magic items | Often part of optimization and expected progression | Still important, but progression is more structured |
| GM support | Heavy GM judgment and system mastery | GM Core gives stronger DC, encounter, treasure, hazard, and variant tools |
PF2e emphasizes transparent tactical decisions and is less tolerant of old exploit logic.

What PF1e Veterans Can Keep
You do not need to throw out everything.
| PF1e skill | Still useful in PF2e |
|---|---|
| Reading your character carefully | PF2e feats, traits, actions, and reactions reward precise reading |
| Thinking tactically | Positioning, timing, target selection, and party roles matter a lot |
| Building toward a concept | PF2e still supports detailed character identity |
| Party coordination | Buffs, debuffs, flanking, Recall Knowledge, healing, and control are central |
| Respecting monsters | Creature level, traits, resistances, weaknesses, and abilities matter |
| GM preparation | Encounter budgets, hazards, treasure, and session structure benefit from prep |
Keep the love of tactics. Replace the old mechanical shortcuts.
What You Need To Unlearn
| PF1e habit | Why it causes trouble in PF2e |
|---|---|
| Full attack as the martial default | Multiple Attack Penalty makes repeated attacks less efficient without support |
| Bonus-stacking arms races | PF2e's math is tighter and assumes smaller, meaningful modifiers |
| Prestige-class rescue plans | PF2e classes are expected to function from level 1 |
| Multiclass dips for core features | Archetypes are the standard way to branch |
| Treating skills as mostly out-of-combat ranks | Skills have defined exploration, downtime, social, and encounter uses |
| Assuming high optimization breaks encounter math | PF2e is harder to break and expects teamwork instead of math escape |
| Eyeballing challenge from PF1e instinct | GM Core encounter math communicates real danger |
The Action Economy Changed
PF1e's action categories are gone. In PF2e encounter mode, most characters get three actions on their turn and one reaction if something triggers it.
| PF1e concept | PF2e translation |
|---|---|
| Move action | Usually Stride, Step, or another movement action |
| Standard attack | Strike |
| Full attack | Multiple Strikes, each affected by Multiple Attack Penalty |
| Five-foot step | Step, usually one action |
| Swift or immediate action | Often replaced by specific actions, free actions, or reactions depending on feature |
| Drawing gear | Often Interact or a specific action activity |
| Casting | Many spells use two actions, with some one-action, three-action, reaction, or variable-action exceptions |
This makes turn planning clearer but less forgiving of autopilot. If you move twice, you have one action left. If you cast a two-action spell, you have one action left. If you Raise a Shield, you spent a real action.
Start with three-action economy, movement actions, strike actions, reactions, and actions and activities.
Multiple Attack Penalty Replaces Full-Attack Thinking
PF1e martials often cared about reaching full-attack routines. PF2e lets many characters Strike more than once, but Multiple Attack Penalty makes later attacks worse.
| Turn pattern | PF2e evaluation |
|---|---|
| Strike, Strike, Strike | Sometimes correct, but often wasteful without class support or weak enemies |
| Strike, skill action, defense | Often better against serious enemies |
| Move, Strike, Raise a Shield | Clean defensive martial turn |
| Recall Knowledge, Strike, reposition | Strong when enemy defenses or weaknesses matter |
| Trip or Grapple, Strike, move or defend | Good control turn when Athletics is supported |
Your third action is a tactical question. It is not automatically another attack. Read action compression feats, grapple and control actions, flanking and positioning, and conditions in combat.
Degrees Of Success Replace Confirmation Logic
PF2e criticals are not built around PF1e-style confirmation rolls. Most checks use four degrees: critical success, success, failure, and critical failure. Beating a DC by 10 or more usually creates a critical success. Missing by 10 or more usually creates a critical failure. A natural 20 improves the result by one step, and a natural 1 worsens it by one step.
That means accuracy, debuffs, bonuses, penalties, and DC targeting are all damage math.
| Small swing | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Off-guard | Lowers AC and can turn hits into crits |
| Frightened | Lowers enemy checks and DCs |
| Sickened | Applies broad penalties and can cost enemy actions to remove |
| Cover | Changes attack results and survivability |
| Aid | Helps an ally reach the next degree of success |
| Item bonuses | Keep attacks, AC, and skills aligned with level expectations |
Use checks and DCs, conditions, proficiency ranks, and skill check DCs.
Proficiency And Level Matter
PF2e proficiency ranks are untrained, trained, expert, master, and legendary. Many trained or better checks add level. This is one of the biggest differences from PF1e's rank-by-rank skill and attack math.
| Rank | Beginner read |
|---|---|
| Untrained | You may be able to try, but you are outside serious scaling |
| Trained | You know what you are doing and usually add level |
| Expert | You are notably specialized |
| Master | You are exceptional |
| Legendary | You are operating at mythic-adjacent skill in that lane |
Level has a large effect on the numbers. A higher-level enemy is harder to affect. A lower-level enemy is easier to overpower. Encounter difficulty flows from that structure.
PF1e veterans should resist the urge to hunt for runaway math. Stay current with proficiency, attributes, equipment, class progression, and party tactics instead.
Character Building Uses Separate Lanes
PF2e still has a lot of build choices, but the game sorts them into lanes.
| Build lane | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ancestry | Identity, Hit Points, Speed, senses, languages, ancestry feats |
| Heritage | A specific expression of ancestry or a versatile heritage |
| Background | Attribute boosts, trained skill, Lore, and a skill feat |
| Class | Core chassis, key attribute, proficiencies, class features, class feats |
| Skill feats | Better uses for trained skills |
| General feats | Broad upgrades such as toughness, initiative, speed, and utility |
| Ancestry feats | Cultural, physical, magical, and lineage-specific options |
| Class feats | The main class customization lane |
| Archetypes | Secondary themes, multiclass-style options, professions, and campaign packages |
| Equipment | Weapons, armor, runes, shields, tools, consumables, and item progression |
This is still crunchy. PF2e separates choices into lanes, and most classes work at level 1.
Use character creation, starter classes, starter ancestries, classes, and feat guides.
Classes Work From Level 1
Across Player Core and Player Core 2, the core class roster is built to function without prestige-class rescue.
| PF2e class | Returning-player read |
|---|---|
| Fighter | Accuracy-focused martial with strong weapon and reaction play |
| Rogue | Skill-heavy striker that cares about positioning and off-guard |
| Ranger | Hunt Prey-driven martial with strong exploration identity |
| Barbarian | Rage martial that still needs smart action use |
| Champion | Divine defender built around cause, reaction, armor, and protection |
| Cleric | Divine caster with deity, doctrine, and font choices |
| Bard | Occult support caster with strong composition play |
| Wizard | Prepared arcane caster that rewards planning |
| Druid | Primal caster tied to order, nature, and flexible spell utility |
| Witch | Patron caster with familiar-forward identity |
| Sorcerer | Bloodline-based spontaneous caster |
| Monk | Mobile stance martial with strong action compression |
| Investigator | Clue and Devise a Stratagem class for analytical players |
| Alchemist | Item expert with higher rules load |
| Oracle | Divine caster shaped by mystery and curse |
| Swashbuckler | Panache-based duelist with skill-driven style |
Archetypes Replace A Lot Of PF1e Build Branching
PF1e veterans looking for dips, prestige classes, and specialty chains should read archetypes early.
| Goal | PF2e route |
|---|---|
| Borrow from another class | Multiclass archetypes |
| Add a professional or combat theme | How archetypes work |
| Give everyone extra archetype feats | Free Archetype |
| Add spellcasting to a martial | Caster archetypes for martials |
| Compare dedication value | Dedication feats ranked |
| Build broader combinations | Archetype combinations |
Free Archetype can feel excellent for PF1e veterans because it restores some of that broad-build feeling. It also adds complexity. Use it once the table knows what the base classes do.
Skills Have More Defined Uses
PF2e skills have defined actions instead of waiting for a GM prompt.
| Skill | PF2e use |
|---|---|
| Athletics | Trip, Grapple, Shove, Climb, Swim, Force Open |
| Acrobatics | Balance, Tumble Through, movement under pressure |
| Intimidation | Demoralize and social pressure |
| Deception | Feint, Create a Diversion, lies, disguises |
| Diplomacy | Make an Impression, Request, social influence |
| Medicine | Treat Wounds, stabilize, long-term recovery support |
| Stealth | Avoid Notice, Hide, Sneak, encounter starts |
| Crafting | Repair, Craft, identify items, support gear-heavy play |
| Knowledge skills and Lore | Recall Knowledge and campaign-specific expertise |
PF1e veterans should especially respect Medicine. Out-of-combat recovery shapes pacing and survivability.
Spellcasting Is More Structured
PF2e spellcasting still has traditions, prepared and spontaneous casters, spell ranks, heightened spells, focus spells, rituals, and big utility swings. The feel is different because degrees of success, tighter math, action costs, and enemy defenses matter more.
| PF1e expectation | PF2e adjustment |
|---|---|
| Spell can end the fight outright | Many spells have meaningful success and failure bands |
| Save DC stacking is the central caster plan | Target choice, tradition, spell rank, defense targeting, and party setup matter |
| Buff stacking drives huge math swings | Bonuses are more controlled and do not stack as wildly |
| Summons and companions can overwhelm action economy | Summoned creatures and companions have clearer action rules |
| Prepared casters dominate by perfect planning | Planning still matters, but the floor and ceiling are more controlled |
Use spell guides, arcane, divine, occult, primal, cantrips, heightening spells, focus spells, rituals, and summoned creatures.
Equipment And Treasure Are Part Of The Math
PF2e expects characters to keep up with gear. Weapons, armor, shields, runes, tools, consumables, staves, wands, worn items, alchemical items, and treasure by level all matter.
| Equipment area | Returning-player note |
|---|---|
| Weapons | Traits, hands, damage dice, range, and class support shape action choices |
| Armor | Armor proficiency, item bonus, Dexterity cap, and category matter |
| Runes | Fundamental runes keep weapon and armor math current |
| Shields | Shields require action investment and can interact with Shield Block |
| Consumables | Consumables are problem-solving tools, not museum exhibits |
| Alchemical items | Especially important for Alchemist and prepared parties |
| Staves and wands | Extend caster options and daily flexibility |
| Bulk | Simpler than pound math, still relevant |
GM Core's treasure by level matters. If the table does not want gear progression to carry as much math, read Automatic Bonus Progression before changing assumptions.
GM Core Changes The GM's Job
PF1e GMs should not port old challenge instincts straight across. GM Core gives clear tools for checks, encounters, hazards, treasure, social scenes, subsystems, environments, hero points, and variant rules.
| GM task | Read next |
|---|---|
| Build level-appropriate fights | Encounter building |
| Adjust a fight without breaking expectations | Adjusting encounters |
| Set table expectations and allowed books | Session zero |
| Use traps, haunts, and environmental threats | Hazards |
| Award expected wealth and items | Treasure by level |
| Resolve uncertain checks | Skill check DCs |
| Run social and structured scenes | Social encounters and subsystems |
| Decide on optional rules | Variant rules |
For a first Remastered campaign, start with the baseline. Add variants after the group understands the thing the variant changes.
Encounter Math Has Clearer Signals
PF2e encounter labels communicate expected danger. Severe encounters are severe. Extreme encounters are extreme. A monster several levels above the party is a serious problem with much stronger numbers.
| Encounter habit | Better PF2e practice |
|---|---|
| Eyeball from old CR instincts | Use encounter budgets and creature level |
| Assume optimization will overcome anything | Respect level, conditions, terrain, and party resources |
| Throw single high-level monsters casually | Understand how level difference affects accuracy, crits, saves, and DCs |
| Skip treasure progression | Track expected gear, runes, consumables, and rewards |
| Treat hazards as flavor | Use hazards as real encounter or exploration elements |
Players should read dying and recovery, hero points, and conditions in combat before assuming PF2e danger works like PF1e danger.
Common Returning-Player Mistakes
| Mistake | Better PF2e habit |
|---|---|
| Building for a late-game combo before learning level 1 turns | Learn your default turn and class engine first |
| Treating every third action as another Strike | Use positioning, defense, skills, Recall Knowledge, or item actions |
| Ignoring +1 bonuses | Small modifiers can change degrees of success |
| Assuming all old spell dominance patterns apply | Learn traditions, rank, action cost, saves, and partial effects |
| Assuming multiclass dips are required | Use archetypes when you need a second theme |
| Skipping Medicine | Recovery affects the whole adventuring day |
| Porting PF1e encounter instincts | Use GM Core encounter and treasure tools |
| Reading every option before playing | Build one character, play, then expand |
A Returning Player Learning Path
- Read the beginner guide.
- Read three-action economy.
- Read checks and DCs and proficiency ranks.
- Build one character with character creation.
- Pick a class from the classes hub.
- Choose skills from the skills hub.
- Buy gear from the equipment hub.
- Play a focused first session.
- Add archetypes, Free Archetype, and variant rules only after the baseline makes sense.
Final Advice
PF2e puts its crunch in different places. PF1e rewarded intense pre-build engineering. PF2e still rewards planning and also rewards teamwork, movement, condition setup, defensive action use, recovery planning, and target selection every round.
Start as a veteran willing to learn the new engine. Ask what PF2e rewards during your first sessions, then use that answer to build and play.
Hot Take
PF1e veterans already know how to read a character sheet, plan a build, and work a tactical map. PF2e asks them to use that attention during play: choose actions deliberately, treat small modifiers as meaningful, and start with a class that works at level 1. Its depth appears at the table instead of inside a six-level escape plan.
