The short answer

Pathfinder 2e is approachable for D&D 5e players, but learn its three-action turns, degree-of-success math, tactical skills, gear expectations, and archetypes as their own system instead of translating 5e habits.

Introduction

If you are coming from D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e Remastered will look familiar for about five minutes. You still roll a d20, build fantasy adventurers, fight monsters, cast spells, track Hit Points, and argue about doors with the confidence of people who have never owned a door.

An instructor compares two rulebooks as parties demonstrate direct attacks and coordinated tactics against stone guardians.

Then the differences start showing up. PF2e uses three-action turns, tighter proficiency math, four degrees of success, more explicit skill actions, more regular character choices, more reliable encounter building, and stronger rules support for GM procedures.

Treat that as a warning label for your instincts. Playing PF2e like 5e with different class names misses what makes the game work.

Use this with the beginner guide, character creation guide, first-session guide, rules hub, combat hub, skills hub, classes hub, spell guides, archetypes, and GM guide.

Quick Comparison

TopicD&D 5e habitPF2e habit
Turn structureAction, bonus action, movement, reactionThree actions, reaction when triggered
MovementOften separate from the main actionStride, Step, Fly, Swim, Climb, and movement activities cost actions
Critical hitsUsually natural 20sUsually success by 10 or more, with natural 20 improving one step
Small bonusesUseful, but often less visibleExtremely important because they change degree of success
SkillsBroad ability checks with variable table useDefined actions and clearer tactical roles
MulticlassingClass levels can be mixed directlyArchetypes and dedication feats are the normal structure
Character identityClass and subclass carry much of the buildAncestry, heritage, background, class, feats, skills, spells, and gear all contribute
Encounter mathOften requires GM intuition and adjustmentStrong level-based encounter guidance
Magic itemsMore optional in baseline mathExpected treasure and item progression matter unless using variants
GM proceduresFlexible but often looseMore explicit tools for DCs, hazards, treasure, encounters, and variants

The emotional translation is simple: 5e is more tolerant of loose rulings; PF2e is more rewarding when everyone uses the engine.

What Transfers Cleanly From 5e

Some instincts still help.

5e skillStill useful in PF2e
Working as a partyPF2e rewards teamwork even more strongly
Knowing your character sheetEssential, especially for actions, reactions, feats, and spells
Caring about positioningEven more important because movement costs actions
Watching enemy behaviorHelps with Recall Knowledge, defenses, weaknesses, and tactics
Thinking in party rolesDefender, striker, controller, support, scout, face, and healer still matter
Respecting resource attritionSpells, focus points, consumables, shields, time, and recovery all matter

The key is to keep the table instincts and replace the mechanical shortcuts.

What Does Not Transfer

These 5e habits cause problems fast.

5e habitWhy it fails in PF2e
"I move for free, then do my thing"Movement costs actions and competes with attacks, spells, shields, and items
"A small +1 is not worth my turn"A +1 can create or prevent critical results
"I attack until I run out of attacks"Multiple attack penalty makes repeated Strikes worse
"The caster will solve it"Casters are powerful, but targeting, support, control, and enemy defenses matter
"Subclass is the build"PF2e spreads identity across many choice lanes
"The GM will fix the math"PF2e encounter difficulty is more precise, so reckless play has clearer consequences
"Skills are mostly for scenes between fights"Skills can be combat tools, exploration tools, recovery tools, and investigation tools

The Three-Action Economy

PF2e's biggest table difference is the three-action economy. On your turn, you usually get three actions. A Strike is one action. A Stride is one action. Raising a shield is one action. Drawing many items is an Interact action. Many spells take two actions. Some activities take one, two, or three actions.

That makes a turn feel less like "main action plus extras" and more like a small budget.

Turn exampleActions
Shield martialStride, Strike, Raise a Shield
ArcherHunt Prey or reload/setup, Strike, Strike or reposition
CasterRecall Knowledge, Cast a two-action spell
RogueStride into flank, Strike, Step away or Hide
ChampionStride, Strike, Raise a Shield while staying near allies
ClericCast a two-action heal, Stride or Raise a Shield

Start with three-action economy, movement actions, strike actions, and reactions.

Degrees Of Success

PF2e checks can produce critical success, success, failure, or critical failure. Beating a DC by 10 or more usually upgrades the result. Missing by 10 or more usually downgrades it. A natural 20 improves the result by one step, and a natural 1 worsens it by one step.

This changes the value of small bonuses.

ModifierWhy it matters
+1 status bonusCan turn success into critical success or failure into success
-1 condition penaltyCan reduce enemy accuracy, saves, AC, or skill reliability
FlankingMakes many melee attacks better by lowering the target's AC through off-guard
FrightenedLowers multiple enemy statistics and can swing attacks, saves, and DCs
AidTurns teamwork into better odds at the exact moment it matters

Read checks and DCs, proficiency ranks, conditions, and flanking and positioning.

Proficiency And Level

PF2e proficiency ranks are untrained, trained, expert, master, and legendary. Many trained or better checks add your level. That means a level 10 trained character is not just slightly better than a level 1 trained character; the system expects level to matter.

This is one reason encounter math is more reliable. A monster that is several levels above the party is not just "a bit spicy." It is mathematically dangerous. A lower-level enemy may become a minion-style threat because the party's numbers outpace it.

For players, this means your best statistics should be supported by proficiency, attribute investment, item bonuses where relevant, and tactical help from the party. For GMs, it means you should respect encounter building and adjusting encounters.

Character Building

5e players often ask, "What subclass am I?" PF2e asks more questions.

PF2e choiceWhat it contributes
AncestryHit Points, Speed, senses, languages, ancestry feats, and identity
HeritageA specific expression of ancestry or a versatile heritage
BackgroundAttribute boosts, trained skill, Lore, and a skill feat
ClassCore chassis, key attribute, proficiencies, class features, class feats
Skill featsBetter use of trained skills in exploration, social scenes, combat, and downtime
General featsBroad upgrades such as durability, initiative, speed, and utility
Ancestry featsCulture, physiology, magic, senses, movement, and special tricks
Class featsMajor build decisions and class style
ArchetypesSecondary themes, multiclass-style packages, and campaign identity

That looks like a lot because it is a lot. The good news is that the lanes are separated. You are not usually choosing one giant list of everything.

Use character creation, backgrounds, starter ancestries, starter classes, ancestry guides, heritage guide, classes, and feat guides.

Classes For 5e Converts

The closest PF2e class is not always the best beginner choice. Choose by table job.

If you liked in 5e...Try in PF2eNotes
FighterFighterExcellent accuracy and clean martial fundamentals
BarbarianBarbarianRage is direct, but instincts and action choices matter
RogueRogueSkills and positioning are central, not side benefits
RangerRangerStrong single-target pressure and exploration identity
PaladinChampionThe divine defender role is here, with remastered causes and reactions
ClericClericDivine font and deity choices shape your support plan
BardBardExcellent party support and occult casting
WizardWizardPrepared casting rewards planning and spell knowledge
SorcererSorcererBloodline determines spell tradition and flavor
MonkMonkMobile, stance-driven, action-efficient martial play
Artificer-style item playAlchemist or InventorTechnical classes; read carefully before starting

Skills Are Combat Rules Too

In 5e, skills often depend heavily on GM style. PF2e gives skills more defined use.

SkillBeginner combat or adventure use
AthleticsTrip, Grapple, Shove, Climb, Swim, force movement
AcrobaticsBalance, Tumble Through, movement under pressure
IntimidationDemoralize enemies and apply frightened
DeceptionFeint, Create a Diversion, social misdirection
MedicineTreat Wounds, stabilize, support recovery
StealthAvoid Notice, Hide, Sneak, shape initiative
Arcana, Nature, Occultism, Religion, Society, LoreRecall Knowledge and identify relevant threats

A 5e martial who ignores skills in PF2e is leaving tools on the table. A 5e caster who ignores skills is also leaving tools on the table, just with fancier sleeves.

Spellcasting Feels Different

PF2e spellcasters are strong, but they are less about overwhelming every encounter with one perfect spell and more about choosing the right effect for the situation.

5e expectationPF2e adjustment
Damage spells should compete with martial single-target damageMany spells are better as area damage, control, buffs, debuffs, utility, or defense-targeting tools
Save-or-suck ends the fightDegrees of success make partial effects common and important
Cantrips are fillerCantrips are regular tools, especially at low levels
Spell list equals class identitySpell tradition, class features, focus spells, and spell access all matter
Concentration dominates buff planningPF2e uses different spell durations and sustained effects instead of 5e concentration as the main gate

Use spell guides, cantrips, heightening spells, focus spells, arcane spells, divine spells, occult spells, and primal spells.

Equipment Matters More

PF2e expects gear progression. Weapon runes, armor runes, shields, consumables, tools, staves, wands, worn items, alchemical items, and treasure pacing are part of the game.

Equipment areaWhy 5e players should care
WeaponsTraits, damage dice, hands, range, and class support affect tactics
ArmorAC depends on proficiency, item bonus, Dexterity cap, and armor category
ShieldsRaising a shield costs an action; Shield Block uses reaction support
RunesFundamental weapon and armor runes are expected power progression
ConsumablesScrolls, potions, talismans, ammunition, and similar items solve specific problems
Adventuring gear and toolsTools make skills and exploration work at the table
BulkCarrying capacity is simpler than pound-counting but still relevant

Magic items are not just prizes. They are part of how the system expects characters to keep pace. If the table wants less item dependency, read Automatic Bonus Progression before changing treasure assumptions.

Multiclassing And Archetypes

PF2e does not use 5e-style level-by-level multiclassing as the default. You do not take two levels of Fighter and one level of Wizard in the same way. Instead, archetypes use dedication feats and follow-up feats to add another theme.

GoalPF2e route
Add another class flavorMulticlass archetypes
Add spellcasting to a martialCaster archetypes for martials
Add a campaign profession or themeHow archetypes work
Give everyone a secondary themeFree Archetype as a variant
Rank dedication valueDedication feats ranked

Free Archetype is popular with 5e converts because it scratches the customization itch. It is also more reading. Use it on purpose, not as a reflex.

Encounter Expectations

PF2e encounter math is more trustworthy than many 5e players expect. Creature level matters. Party level matters. Encounter budgets matter. Conditions and teamwork matter.

Encounter labelPractical meaning
Trivial or lowGood for pacing, confidence, or resource-light scenes
ModerateReal encounter, usually fair if players use basic tactics
SevereSerious threat that can punish mistakes
ExtremePossible campaign-defining danger, not a casual tutorial fight

For GMs, use encounter building, adjusting encounters, hazards, treasure by level, and hero points.

For players, this means teamwork is not optional decoration. If the GM says a fight is severe, believe the math. The monster did not arrive for vibes.

GM Differences

A 5e GM moving to PF2e should resist the urge to improvise over every rule before learning why it exists. PF2e gives the GM strong procedures for DCs, encounter math, treasure, hazards, exploration, downtime, rarity, and variants.

GM questionPF2e support
How hard should this check be?Skill check DCs
How do I start encounters from exploration?Initiative and exploration
How do I make social scenes more structured?Social encounters
How do I add hazards?Hazards
How do I support bigger campaign systems?Subsystems
How do I set campaign expectations?Session zero

The GM still makes judgment calls. The difference is that PF2e gives more scaffolding, so the GM can spend less energy inventing basic structure and more energy making the situation interesting.

First Character Recommendations

If your group is switching from 5e, start with clear roles.

Player preferenceStrong first PF2e pick
Tactical weapon userFighter
Sneaky skill expertRogue
Wilderness strikerRanger
Durable holy defenderChampion
Direct rage martialBarbarian
Party support casterBard or Cleric
Flexible spontaneous casterSorcerer
Prepared spell plannerWizard

For a first session, avoid building the most complicated possible version of your concept. A clean character that teaches the rules beats a brilliant character that requires an apology before every turn.

Common Conversion Mistakes

MistakeBetter PF2e habit
Attacking three times every turnUse one or two attacks, then reposition, defend, Recall Knowledge, or use a skill action
Ignoring shields because they are passive in 5eRaise a Shield deliberately if your build supports it
Forgetting movement costs actionsPlan where you need to be before spending your first action
Hoarding consumables foreverUse scrolls, potions, alchemical items, and tools when they solve real problems
Building only for damageBuild for accuracy, defenses, action efficiency, skills, and party support
Ignoring MedicineOut-of-combat recovery is a major party resource
Assuming the GM will balance around weak tacticsPF2e's encounter math expects the party to play the game it is playing
Reading every option before session oneBuild one playable character and learn that character first

A Simple Learning Path

  1. Read the beginner guide.
  2. Build one character with character creation.
  3. Pick a clear class from starter classes.
  4. Choose an ancestry from starter ancestries.
  5. Learn your trained skills from the skills hub.
  6. Learn your default combat turn from the combat hub.
  7. Buy practical gear from the equipment hub.
  8. Run or play a focused first session.
  9. Add archetypes, spell guides, and optional variant rules after the table understands the baseline.

Final Advice

PF2e is a tactical fantasy RPG with a different promise: if players learn the system and the GM uses the tools, the table gets clearer choices, fairer challenge, and less rules fog.

Learn what your three actions can do this turn before optimizing a class, ancestry, archetype, and future feat chain.

Hot Take

PF2e conversion goes better when 5e muscle memory gives way to the system in front of you. A third Strike is rarely the whole turn: use skills, movement, defense, Aid, or Recall Knowledge when they change the situation. Fighter is a strong first class because accuracy, actions, reactions, positioning, weapons, shields, and teamwork all appear immediately. Cool ideas still work when you pay their action cost and follow their traits.

Return to the beginner hub or continue to PF2e vs Pathfinder 1e.
