Introduction
The Exemplar is the rare War of Immortals class for players who want to play a martial hero with a literal spark of divinity. You are not a Cleric, you are not a Champion, and you are not a Fighter wearing shinier boots. You are a mythic-shaped warrior whose sacred items, scars, weapons, crowns, belts, eyes, or sandals become ikons: personal vessels for divine power.
That makes Exemplar one of the most flavor-forward martial classes in Pathfinder 2e Remastered. Your spear might become a legend. Your shield might glow with the memory of a god's last war. Your sandals might carry your allies across the field. Your scar might be the part of the story where everyone learns you are extremely hard to kill.

Disclaimer
This is a ranking and play advice guide, not a replacement for War of Immortals. It summarizes Exemplar choices, compares build paths, and points to related PF2e guides without reproducing the full class text, feat text, ikon entries, or tables from the source book.
Ratings assume a normal Pathfinder 2e Remastered campaign with combat, exploration, social scenes, varied monster types, and standard treasure pacing. If your GM is running a heavy mythic campaign, public-legend campaign, or relic-focused campaign, Exemplar's stranger options get better. If your campaign is a dungeon crawl where nobody cares that your belt has a prophecy, the practical martial picks rise.
Rating Legend
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Avoid unless your campaign has a very specific reason. |
| ● | Situational. Good in the right build, weak as a blind default. |
| ● | Good. Reliable, useful, and worth recommending. |
| ● | Excellent. One of the strongest choices for most tables. |
Ratings assume a normal PF2e campaign with combat, exploration, social scenes, and varied monster types. Exemplar has unusually strong campaign-tone pressure, so some options move up if your GM uses mythic quests, divine fallout, public reputation, relic politics, or War of Immortals storylines.

What Exemplar Does
Exemplar is a martial class built around a one-at-a-time divine spark. Your spark can empower only one ikon at once. While it rests in an ikon, you gain that ikon's passive immanence benefit. When you use that ikon's active transcendence effect, the spark moves out and into another ikon.
That gives Exemplar a loop:
| Step | Table question |
|---|---|
| Choose immanence | Which passive effect matters right now? |
| Position | Can I actually use the transcendence action well? |
| Spark Transcendence | Is the active payoff worth moving the spark? |
| Rotate | Which ikon should hold my spark next? |
Hot Take: Exemplar rewards a planned spark rotation; reacting to whichever ikon looks exciting wastes its strongest turns.

Class Feature Rankings
Divine Spark And Ikons - Blue
This is the class. You start with three ikons, and each one gives a passive immanence effect plus an active transcendence effect. Body ikons are built into you, worn ikons are gear-like support objects, and weapon ikons are your combat workhorses.
Most builds should start with one weapon ikon, one defensive or support ikon, and one mobility, utility, or backup ikon. Three damage ikons can look exciting, but it often leaves you without a good answer when the enemy flies, controls you, or simply hits back.
Shift Immanence - Blue
Shift Immanence moves your divine spark into an ikon. You can also do it at initiative, which means your first turn starts with a plan instead of a warmup tax.
The practical advice: decide your default initiative ikon before the session. Victor's Wreath for party offense, Mirrored Aegis for defense, Thousand-League Sandals for positioning, or your weapon ikon when immediate pressure matters.
Spark Transcendence - Blue
Spark Transcendence is your signature active deed. It can be a strike sequence, a defensive burst, healing, movement, control, ally support, or a dramatic "everyone saw that, right?" moment.
The once-per-round limit matters. Use your transcendence action when the active effect changes the turn, not just because it is available.
Humble Strikes - Green
Simple weapons get a die-size boost in your hands. This makes simple-weapon ikon fantasies much more playable. It does not automatically beat the best martial weapon choices, but it opens flavorful builds without making your numbers look like a charity project.
Shield Block - Green/Blue
Free Shield Block is better than it looks because Exemplar often has a worn ikon or shield plan anyway. Mirrored Aegis makes this even more natural. If you are playing a front-line Exemplar and you ignore shields completely, have a clear reason.
Epithets - Blue/Green
Root, dominion, and sovereignty epithets are not just title cards. They add trained skills, post-transcendence effects, critical effects, support bursts, defensive pressure, knowledge, healing, control, and identity.
The best epithets support your action rhythm. The worst ones are the ones you picked because the name sounded cool and then forgot to trigger for six sessions.
Spirit Striking And Greater Spirit Striking - Blue
Extra spirit damage on weapons and unarmed attacks keeps your martial scaling relevant and makes your divine identity matter in routine turns. It also makes damage-type planning more interesting with Energized Spark and sanctified options.
Unassailable Soul Line - Blue
Exemplar's Will progression is excellent. Master Will at 7, upgraded results, later legendary Will, and reduced damage on failed Will saves against damaging effects are exactly the kind of defense a front-line divine martial wants.
Armor Progression - Green
Medium armor proficiency and later armor improvements give you practical martial defense. You are not a heavy-armor Champion by default, but you are not a delicate robe person either.
Class DC Progression - Green/Blue
Your class DC matters for many ikon, epithet, and feat effects. If your build leans into saves, forced movement, conditions, or aura control, this becomes more important than it first appears.
Build Paths Ranked
Party Banner Exemplar - Blue
This is the best general build. Use Victor's Wreath, Mirrored Aegis, a reliable weapon ikon, Diplomacy or Intimidation, and a support-minded epithet path. You still hit things, but your real value is making the party hit better, survive longer, and shake off effects.
Best for: balanced parties, new Exemplar players, groups without another strong support martial.
Strength Melee Legend - Blue/Green
Use a heavy melee weapon ikon such as Titan's Breaker, Noble Branch, Barrow's Edge, Mortal Harvest, or Gleaming Blade. Invest in Strength, Constitution, Athletics, armor, runes, and positioning.
Best for: front-line parties, reach tactics, Athletics, big single-target pressure.
Dexterity Ranged Hero - Green/Blue
Use Starshot or Unfailing Bow, Dexterity, mobility, Perception, Acrobatics, Stealth, and ranged-support feats. This is safer than melee but depends more on clear lines, reload/ammunition planning, and anti-flying or anti-cover tactics.
Best for: parties with enough front line already, mythic archer fantasy, mobile battle maps.
Thrown Weapon Trickster - Green
Shadow Sheath, Twin Stars, Hurl at the Horizon, and Mated Birds in Paired Flight can create a very stylish thrown build. It is real, but it requires tighter action and rune planning than a normal melee build.
Best for: players who love item logistics, off-guard setup, and mobile skirmishing.
Defensive Relic Bearer - Green
Mirrored Aegis, Scar of the Survivor, Skin Hard as Horn, Bands of Imprisonment, Pelt of the Beast, and shield play create a tough symbolic defender. You will not out-Champion the Champion, but you can bring strong defensive bursts while staying more offensively flexible.
Best for: parties that need a second frontliner or a defensive support martial.
Mythic Face And Leader - Green
Fetching Bangles, Victor's Wreath, Eye-Catching Spot, social epithets, Diplomacy, Intimidation, Performance, and faction play create a public legend. This shines when the GM actually uses reputation, factions, and social encounters.
Best for: War of Immortals campaigns, political games, divine fallout arcs.
Ikons Ranked
You choose three ikons at 1st level. This ranking assumes general adventuring and rates each ikon as a whole package: passive value, transcendence payoff, action cost, gear fit, and how often it solves a real problem.
| Rank | Ikon | Type | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Victor's Wreath ● | Worn | Party attack aura and condition reroll support |
| 2 | Mirrored Aegis ● | Worn shield | Defensive aura, Shield Block synergy, ally protection |
| 3 | Gleaming Blade ● | Weapon | Reliable melee spirit damage and two-Strike burst |
| 4 | Noble Branch ● | Weapon | Reach-friendly spear, staff, and polearm play with simple reliable damage |
| 5 | Titan's Breaker ● | Weapon | Heavy melee damage, construct/object pressure, big transcendence hit |
| 6 | Scar of the Survivor ● | Body | Durability and repeatable self-healing |
| 7 | Thousand-League Sandals ● | Worn | Speed, repositioning, and ally movement turns |
| 8 | Shadow Sheath ● | Weapon | Thrown weapon engine with off-guard payoff |
| 9 | Starshot ● | Weapon | Ranged splash and burst-area shot |
| 10 | Barrow's Edge ● | Weapon | Slashing/piercing melee finisher and self-heal on successful hit |
| 11 | Pelt of the Beast ● | Worn | Damage resistance and elemental protection aura |
| 12 | Gaze Sharp as Steel ● | Body | Perception, ranged defense, and precision setup |
| 13 | Mortal Harvest ● | Weapon | Persistent spirit damage and multi-target movement Strike |
| 14 | Unfailing Bow ● | Weapon | Ranged consistency and repeat-shot payoff |
| 15 | Skybearer's Belt ● | Worn | Athletics control and ally repositioning |
| 16 | Hands of the Wildling ● | Weapon/body-like | Unarmed/free-hand cone pressure |
| 17 | Bands of Imprisonment ● | Worn | Mental defense and escape burst |
| 18 | Horn of Plenty ● | Worn | Consumable support, strong with crafting and potion planning |
| 19 | Fetching Bangles ● | Worn | Sticky social/control aura, table and enemy dependent |
| 20 | Skin Hard as Horn ● | Body | Physical resistance plan, best when damage types are predictable |
| 21 | Eye-Catching Spot ● | Body | Style-heavy defensive/social option with mental and visual limits |
Victor's Wreath - Blue
Victor's Wreath is the cleanest support ikon. Its immanence gives you and nearby allies an attack bonus aura, which is one of the easiest ways for a martial character to make the whole party better. Its transcendence lets allies in the aura attempt a new save against an ongoing negative effect with a bonus.
This is the "I brought a banner and everyone is now better at violence" ikon. It fits almost any Exemplar.
Mirrored Aegis - Blue
Mirrored Aegis is the best defensive ikon for most front-line builds. It uses a shield, supports Shield Block, provides an AC aura, can restore itself after resting with your spark in it, and its transcendence adds longer protective value for you and an ally.
Take this if you expect to stand near danger. That is most melee Exemplars. Yes, your legend can include responsible shield maintenance.
Gleaming Blade - Blue
Gleaming Blade is the straightforward melee striker ikon for sword, knife, or slashing unarmed builds. It adds strong spirit damage and has a two-Strike transcendence that compresses offense into one dramatic action sequence.
It is not subtle. It is good. Sometimes the sacred blade is sacred because it solves the encounter before the enemy gets a second monologue.
Noble Branch - Blue/Green
Noble Branch supports staffs, spears, and polearms. It is reliable, reach-friendly, and action-efficient after a successful Strike. If you want a spear-bearing mythic hero, this is the first place to look.
This is also one of the best ways to make the Exemplar feel ancient and grounded instead of flashy. Big green cloak, ash spear, calm voice, absolutely unacceptable damage.
Titan's Breaker - Blue/Green
Titan's Breaker is for clubs, hammers, axes, and bludgeoning unarmed builds. It adds spirit damage, pressures constructs and objects, and has a big two-action transcendence Strike. If the campaign includes constructs, siege scenes, doors with opinions, or huge monsters, move this up.
Pair it with Athletics, weapon traits, and good runes.
Scar of the Survivor - Blue/Green
Scar of the Survivor is a body ikon that improves Fortitude and gives you Diehard, then lets you heal yourself with its transcendence. It is not the highest DPR pick, but it solves the martial problem of staying upright when the fight turns ugly.
Take it if your party lacks a durable front line or if your character's legend is "I was supposed to die and made other arrangements."
Thousand-League Sandals - Blue/Green
Speed is power in PF2e. Thousand-League Sandals gives a Speed boost while empowered and a transcendence movement burst that can also let nearby allies move as reactions.
This is excellent on melee builds that need reach, ranged builds that need angles, and parties that understand positioning. It is less valuable on cramped maps, but still rarely bad.
Shadow Sheath - Green/Blue
Shadow Sheath is the thrown-weapon engine. It creates copies of a hidden one-handed thrown weapon, lets you draw them efficiently while empowered, and rewards off-guard targets. Its transcendence gives a follow-up Strike after a miss with the weapon.
This is strong, but it asks more of your build than a normal weapon ikon. You need thrown support, returning/rune planning, off-guard setup, and clean action use.
Starshot - Green/Blue
Starshot is the ranged area ikon. It adds spirit splash damage and can turn a ranged Strike into a burst that is especially punishing to larger enemies. It is one of the better ways to make an Exemplar matter from range without pretending to be a spellcaster.
It depends on sight lines, ammunition, cover, and party positioning. Read the ranged weapons guide.
Barrow's Edge - Green
Barrow's Edge is a slashing or piercing melee finisher. It deals more spirit damage against wounded enemies and can heal you after a successful hit. It is good when you focus fire and fight in melee.
It is weaker when the party scatters damage across enemies or when you cannot safely stay in reach.
Pelt of the Beast - Green
Pelt of the Beast is a flexible resistance ikon. You choose a damage type during daily prep, get resistance while empowered, and can use the transcendence to protect nearby allies against the chosen type.
This jumps to Blue when you know the day's damage profile. It is only Green when you are guessing.
Gaze Sharp as Steel - Green
Gaze Sharp as Steel improves Perception and ranged defense, then sets up precision damage on your next successful Strike. It is good for archers, scouts, and players who value defense against ranged enemies.
It is not a complete combat plan by itself. It is a strong third ikon, not usually your main event.
Mortal Harvest - Green
Mortal Harvest supports sickles, axes, flails, and polearms with persistent spirit damage and a movement follow-up against another target after a successful Strike. It is best in multi-enemy fights.
Against a single boss, persistent damage is still fine, but the multi-target transcendence loses some shine.
Unfailing Bow - Green
Unfailing Bow is the single-target ranged consistency option. Repeating the d20 result of a prior Strike can be excellent after a good roll and sad after a bad setup. It is a thinking player's bow, not a "spam the button" bow.
Starshot is usually more broadly exciting. Unfailing Bow is cleaner for precise archer builds.
Skybearer's Belt - Green
Skybearer's Belt helps Athletics maneuvers against larger creatures and lets you reposition allies with a transcendence Stride. It is powerful when your table uses forced movement, rescue movement, and positioning tactics.
If your group rarely plays the battle map tightly, this may feel like wearing a very dramatic belt for no reason.
Hands of the Wildling - Green
Hands of the Wildling works for free-hand weapons and unarmed Strikes. It adds splash spirit damage and offers cone pressure. It supports unarmed Exemplar concepts and can pair nicely with Monk or martial archetype ideas.
The cone option can put you off-guard if you swing recklessly, so do not treat it as free damage.
Bands of Imprisonment - Orange/Green
Bands of Imprisonment improves Will and mental resistance, then lets you escape and surge forward into a melee Strike. That is excellent against grab, restraint, and mental-heavy enemies.
It is situational as a general pick because Exemplar already has strong Will scaling. Take it when the campaign promises control effects or imprisonment themes.
Horn of Plenty - Orange/Green
Horn of Plenty creates and stores temporary potion or elixir support and can transfer benefits to an ally. It is better if you have Crafting, formulas, Treasure Vault options, and party planning around consumables.
As a casual pick, it is a lot of accounting. As a prepared party support engine, it can be great.
Fetching Bangles - Orange/Green
Fetching Bangles makes enemies hesitate to leave your aura and can pull an enemy adjacent to you. It is strongest on defender or face builds that want to force attention.
The mental save dependence and close-range plan make it less universal than Mirrored Aegis or Victor's Wreath.
Skin Hard as Horn - Orange/Green
Skin Hard as Horn gives resistance against a chosen physical damage type, with a stronger defensive burst from transcendence. It is good when you know the enemy damage profile and less impressive when monsters mix damage types or crit through your plan.
It is campaign prep armor, not universal armor.
Eye-Catching Spot - Orange
Eye-Catching Spot imposes a small melee attack penalty while empowered and can fascinate one creature. It is flavorful and can fit a social mythic character, but mental, visual, emotion, and hostile-action limitations keep it from being a default combat recommendation.
It wins the "most likely to start a fashion argument at the table" award. Mechanically, that award is not worth a feat slot.
Epithets Ranked
Epithets should support your build's real job. You get a root epithet at 3rd, a dominion epithet at 7th, and a sovereignty epithet at 15th.
Root Epithets
| Root epithet | Best use |
|---|---|
| The Brave ● | Free movement toward an enemy after transcendence, Athletics training |
| The Cunning ● | Free Feint or Create a Diversion after transcendence, Deception training |
| The Radiant ● | Ally HP support after transcendence, Diplomacy training |
| The Proud ● | Taunt-style pressure, Intimidation training |
| The Deft ● | Thrown/ranged handling, Thievery training |
| The Mournful ● | Dazzled rider against an enemy, Diplomacy training |
The Brave is the cleanest melee default. The Cunning is excellent if your build cares about off-guard, Shadow Sheath, or skill-action pressure. The Radiant is the best party-friendly root for support Exemplars.
Dominion Epithets
| Dominion epithet | Best use |
|---|---|
| Peerless under Heaven ● | Weapon specialists and fear pressure |
| Dancer in the Seasons ● | Mobility, temp HP, and flexible energy identity |
| Restless as the Tide ● | Forced movement, splash pressure, water/cold theme |
| Whose Cry is Thunder ● | Prone/deafened crit effects and retaliation pressure |
| Born of the Bones of the Earth ● | Earth/fire damage, difficult terrain, immobilizing crits on valid terrain |
| Of Verse Unbroken ● | Party sustain support, sonic/vitality, bardic hero flavor |
Peerless under Heaven is the clean martial default. Dancer and Tide are the most broadly useful non-defaults. Of Verse Unbroken becomes much better if your party has multiple sustained effects.
Sovereignty Epithets
| Sovereignty epithet | Best use |
|---|---|
| Teacher of Heroes ● | Free Recall Knowledge that shares immunities, resistances, weaknesses, or low saves |
| Healer of the World ● | Emergency party stabilization and temporary HP |
| The Last Ruler ● | Intimidation defender and punishment for missing you |
| Thief of Moonlight ● | High-level stealing, stealth, and trickster play |
Teacher of Heroes is absurdly practical because high-level fights are often won by knowing what not to do. Healer of the World is the emotional pick that also happens to be mechanically useful. The Last Ruler and Thief of Moonlight are more build- and campaign-specific.
Ability Scores
| Priority | Ability | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Strength or Dexterity | Your key attribute and main attack plan |
| 2 | Constitution | You are a 10-HP martial who expects danger |
| 3 | Wisdom | Perception, Will, Religion, and common save pressure |
| 4 | Charisma | Social legend, Diplomacy, Intimidation, Performance, and public myth |
| 5 | Intelligence | Extra skills and Recall Knowledge coverage |
| 6 | The unused attack stat | Do not split Strength and Dexterity unless the build has a real reason |
Strength Exemplar wants Athletics, armor, melee weapons, and Fortitude confidence. Dexterity Exemplar wants ranged or finesse weapons, Reflex help, Acrobatics, Stealth, and cleaner initiative.
Skills
You start trained in Religion and a few additional skills. Choose skills that match your epithet and combat style.
| Skill | Why |
|---|---|
| Athletics ● | Grapple, Trip, Shove, Climb, Swim, and mythic strong-person behavior. Best for Strength builds. |
| Acrobatics ● | Mobility, Tumble Through, balance, and ranged positioning. Best for Dexterity builds. |
| Religion ● | Class theme, divine threats, undead, holy/unholy questions. |
| Intimidation ● | Demoralize and public legend pressure. |
| Diplomacy ● | Leaders, faction play, social hero scenes. |
| Performance ● | Better with Of Verse Unbroken or public-legend builds. |
| Stealth ● | Dexterity, scouting, Thief of Moonlight, Shadow Sheath. |
| Society ● | Factions, courts, war history, public reputation. |
| Crafting ● | Repair shields, manage gear, identify items, support Treasure Vault play. |
Skill feat advice: Strength builds want Athletics support. Dexterity builds want Acrobatics and Stealth support. Face Exemplars want Diplomacy or Intimidation feats. Every Exemplar benefits from enough Religion to justify the divine legend on the sheet.
Ancestries And Heritages
Exemplar works with almost any ancestry because Strength and Dexterity are both supported.
| Option | Why |
|---|---|
| Human ● | Flexible feats, easy heroic archetype, broad build support. |
| Orc ● | Durable mythic warrior, scarred survivor, divine defiance flavor. |
| Dwarf ● | Stone, relic, shield, endurance, and ancient-oath energy. |
| Elf ● | Dexterity, speed, elegant ikon identity, but protect HP. |
| Tengu ● | Weapon and travel myth flavor, strong for wanderer concepts. |
| Goblin ● | Chaotic folk-hero energy and Dexterity routes. |
| Minotaur ● | Big Strength myth, horns, ruins, labyrinth vibes. |
| Jotunborn ● | Giant-touched hero identity for Titan's Breaker or Skybearer builds. |
| Versatile heritages ● | Use for celestial, fiendish, spirit-touched, elemental, or mythic ancestry texture. |
Read the ancestry guide hub and heritage guide if you want the divine spark to feel rooted in the character's origin instead of stapled on after equipment shopping.
Backgrounds
Backgrounds should do three jobs for Exemplar: boost the attack attribute, give a skill you actually roll, and explain why this person is already on the road to legend. Read the PF2e backgrounds guide before picking a background only because the name sounds like a tavern song.
| Background lane | Best Exemplar use |
|---|---|
| Warrior, guard, gladiator, soldier, or similar martial backgrounds ● | Strength builds, shield builds, weapon ikon builds, and "I became famous by surviving violence" stories. |
| Noble, emissary, courtly, or herald-style backgrounds ● | Victor's Wreath, Radiant, Proud, Diplomacy, Society, and public reputation campaigns. |
| Acolyte, pilgrim, hermit, or divine-touched backgrounds ● | Religion, sanctified themes, godsrain fallout, and divine spark stories. |
| Scout, nomad, sailor, or wanderer backgrounds ● | Dexterity builds, Thousand-League Sandals, Starshot, Shadow Sheath, and travel-heavy campaigns. |
| Artisan, smith, relic hunter, or crafter backgrounds ● | Ikon identity, shield repair, rune literacy, Treasure Vault play, and gear-focused campaigns. |
| Entertainer or performer backgrounds ● | Of Verse Unbroken, public myths, social set pieces, and "the legend advertises itself" tables. |
Hot take: Exemplar is one of the few martials where a social background can be as correct as a combat background. If your character is carrying a divine spark and nobody in the setting reacts, you are playing with half the class's flavor turned off.
Best Feat Paths
Use the Exemplar feat guide for level-by-level picks. For the class guide, the important question is which feat lane supports your ikon plan.
Spark Damage Path - Blue/Green
Energized Spark, Sanctified Soul, Vow of Mortal Defiance, Exult in Violence, and high-level damage ikons let you tune your spirit damage and divine identity. This path is strongest when the campaign has holy, unholy, spirit, elemental, undead, fiend, celestial, or mythic targets.
Weapon Ikon Path - Blue
Twin Stars, Hurl at the Horizon, Through the Needle's Eye, Binding Serpents Celestial Arrow, Motionless Cutter, Mated Birds in Paired Flight, Compliant Gold, Infinite Blades Celestial Arrow, Branched Tree of Pain, Seven-Colored Cosmic Bridge, and Sunwrecker support weapon-focused builds.
This is the default for most Exemplars because weapons are how you remain relevant every round.
Mobility Path - Blue/Green
Leap the Falls, Lightning Swap, Flow of War, Journey of the Sky Chariot, Thousand-League Sandals, Dancer in the Seasons, The Brave, and Seven-Colored Cosmic Bridge all improve positioning.
PF2e punishes martials who cannot reach the correct square. Mobility is not luxury. It is how your expensive heroic turn actually happens.
Defensive And Rescue Path - Green/Blue
Mirrored Aegis, Scar of the Survivor, Pelt of the Beast, Skin Hard as Horn, Fish from the Falls' Edge, Complete the Hero's Journey, Healer of the World, and Reach for Immortality support the durable hero plan.
This path is especially strong when the party has plenty of damage but not enough "please do not die right now."
Mythic Reality-Bending Path - Green
Strike Rivers, Seize Winds and Remake the World are late-game feats for high-level campaigns that want the Exemplar to start acting like a living myth. They are exciting, but they are not relevant to most low- and mid-level play.
Weapons And Combat Styles
Exemplar has full martial weapon access and likes weapons that make its ikon effects reliable.
| Style | Best ikons |
|---|---|
| Reach melee ● | Noble Branch, Mortal Harvest, Compliant Gold. |
| Heavy melee ● | Titan's Breaker, Gleaming Blade, Barrow's Edge. |
| Sword or knife ● | Gleaming Blade. |
| Shield melee ● | Mirrored Aegis plus a one-handed weapon ikon. |
| Ranged bow ● | Starshot, Unfailing Bow. |
| Thrown weapon ● | Shadow Sheath, Twin Stars, Hurl at the Horizon. |
| Unarmed/free-hand ● | Hands of the Wildling, Titan's Breaker unarmed option, Monk archetype ideas. |
Weapon advice: start with the combat role first and the name second. "The Emerald Spear That Pierced Dawn" is only cool if it has the reach, runes, and action economy to do something after the villain finishes laughing.
Equipment
Ikons are sacred, but they are still gear. Keep your math current.
Runes
Use the runes guide and magic items by level.
| Rune priority | Why |
|---|---|
| Fundamental weapon runes ● | Accuracy and damage scaling are mandatory. |
| Fundamental armor runes ● | AC and saves keep the legend alive. |
| Property runes that match your weapon plan ● | Add control, damage, or utility after fundamentals. |
| Returning support for thrown builds ● | Thrown Exemplars collapse without clean weapon return or Shadow Sheath planning. |
| Resilient armor runes ● | Saving throws decide high-level fights. |
Armor And Shields
Medium armor is the practical default for Strength builds. Dexterity builds may prefer light armor if their Dexterity is high enough. Mirrored Aegis builds should keep shield upgrades current and understand Shield Block.
Consumables
Use consumables, alchemical items, adventuring gear, and Treasure Vault Remaster to patch your non-spellcaster gaps.
Good Exemplar consumables include healing potions, elixirs, antitoxin or antiplague when relevant, mobility tools, talismans for weapon turns, scrolls only if an archetype or party member can use them, and specialty materials when Monster Core traits demand them.
Worn Items
Use worn invested items for mobility, saves, skill support, and defensive utility. Exemplar often feels item-hungry because ikons are part of the class fantasy. Do not let that distract you from the math items every martial needs.
Archetypes
Exemplar likes archetypes that reinforce the chosen martial identity without stealing too many actions.
| Archetype lane | Why |
|---|---|
| Martial archetypes ● | Improve combat style, weapon plan, reactions, or battlefield role. |
| Multiclass archetypes ● | Fighter, Champion, Monk, Rogue, Ranger, and Bard-adjacent ideas can work. |
| Free Archetype ● | Exemplar has strong class feats, so free archetype gives build texture without painful tradeoffs when allowed. |
| Caster archetypes ● | Utility is nice, but your action economy is already busy. |
| Lore archetypes ● | Good for public legends, relic hunters, and Teacher of Heroes builds. |
Strong comparisons:
- Fighter for accuracy and weapon discipline.
- Champion for divine defender concepts.
- Monk for unarmed and mobility routes.
- Rogue for skills and off-guard pressure.
- Ranger for ranged or hunt-focused martial texture.
Monster Core Matchups
Use Monster Core, creature traits, and encounter use to choose the right ikon and damage plan.
| Threat | Best Exemplar response |
|---|---|
| High-AC bosses | Use flanking, ally debuffs, attack auras, Hero Point timing, and avoid bad third Strikes |
| Constructs and objects | Titan's Breaker moves up because of object and Hardness pressure |
| Flying enemies | Starshot, Unfailing Bow, thrown backups, Journey of the Sky Chariot, and ally magic matter |
| Swarms and troops | Starshot, Hands of the Wildling, Steel on Steel, Infinite Blades, and party area damage matter |
| Undead and fiends | Sanctified Soul, divine damage planning, Religion, and spirit damage become more valuable |
| Mental controllers | Exemplar's Will progression is excellent, but stunned, slowed, and confused still deserve respect |
| Big melee bruisers | Mirrored Aegis, Pelt of the Beast, Skin Hard as Horn, reach, Trip, and movement control |
GM Core note: Exemplar shines when encounters have clear terrain, visible stakes, and enemies worth becoming famous for defeating. Use encounter building, hazards, treasure by level, adventure hooks, and session zero to make the rare class premise fit the campaign.
Party Fit
| Party need | Exemplar answer |
|---|---|
| Primary striker | Good with weapon ikon focus |
| Defensive support | Good with Mirrored Aegis, Victor's Wreath, Scar, Pelt, and shield play |
| Main healer | No, except limited rescue and high-level support |
| Face | Good with Radiant, Proud, Mournful, Fetching Bangles, Diplomacy, or Intimidation |
| Scout | Possible with Dexterity, Gaze Sharp as Steel, Stealth, Acrobatics, and mobility |
| Knowledge support | Possible with Religion, Society, and Teacher of Heroes |
| Mythic campaign lead | Excellent |
Exemplar pairs well with casters who provide buffs and debuffs, a frontliner who can flank, and a party that values positioning. It pairs badly with groups that refuse to coordinate and then ask why the legendary hero spent two actions jogging.
Hot Takes
Victor's Wreath Is Probably Too Useful To Ignore
The attack aura is not subtle. It helps the whole party and requires no elaborate theorycraft. If your Exemplar has no party-support plan, make sure you are getting enough damage or control to justify passing it up.
Exemplar Is Not Fighter With Better Lore
Fighter wins on clean accuracy and weapon feat depth. Exemplar wins on spark rhythm, ikon utility, support bursts, and mythic identity. If you only want the best possible Strike math, go read the Fighter guide.
Three Weapon Ikons Is A Trap For Many Parties
It looks cool. It can work. But many encounters are lost because the martial had no defense, no movement, no support, and no way to help an ally recover. Bring at least one ikon that does not just say "I hit it with a different noun."
The Best Exemplar Players Pre-Plan Their First Turn
Your initiative Shift Immanence is a gift. Decide before combat whether you normally start in Victor's Wreath, Mirrored Aegis, a weapon ikon, or mobility. The table should not have to watch your divine spark browse a menu.
Rarity Is A Real Table Question
Exemplar is rare for a reason. The class says something about the setting. If every town guard shrugs at the glowing god-spark warrior with a named relic, the campaign is leaving money on the table.
Example Build: The Green Banner Legend
This is a reliable melee support Exemplar for a standard campaign.
| Choice | Pick |
|---|---|
| Key attribute | Strength |
| Secondary attributes | Constitution, Wisdom, Charisma |

How it plays: start many fights with Victor's Wreath if the party can use the aura immediately. Shift into Noble Branch when you need damage. Use Mirrored Aegis when the enemy pressure turns toward the party. Your job is not to be the highest DPR character every round. Your job is to make the party's best rounds happen while still hitting hard enough that enemies cannot ignore you.
The ideal table memory is not "the Exemplar did 4 more damage than the Fighter." It is "we all hit because the green banner was up, then the shield flashed, then the boss learned what a sacred spear does."
