Introduction
Orcs in Pathfinder 2e Remastered are what happens when the ancestry section looks at death saves, dark rooms, bad terrain, blood loss, hostile magic, and martial pride and says, "Fine, I will make my own safety rules."
Mechanically, Orcs are simple in the best possible way. They get 10 ancestry Hit Points, Medium size, 25-foot Speed, two free attribute boosts, darkvision, and access to a feat list built around survival, physical pressure, brutal weapons, anti-magic instincts, animal handling, and looking at the dying condition like it owes them money.
The best Orc builds are not just "big martial with tusks." They are characters whose ancestry changes how they take risks. A Hold-Scarred Champion can stand in awful places longer. A Battle-Ready Fighter can open combat with Intimidation pressure. A Superstition Barbarian can hate magic in a way the rules actually respect. A Beast Trainer Ranger can build toward Ferocious Beasts and turn the animal companion into the second most stubborn creature in the party.

Rating Key
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Bad. Avoid unless the story matters more than the mechanics. |
| ● | Situational. Strong in the right campaign, weak in the wrong one. |
| ● | Good. Reliable and easy to justify. |
| ● | Excellent. One of the best options for the ancestry, role, or level. |
Orc Snapshot
| Trait | Orc Details |
|---|---|
| Source | Player Core |
| Rarity | Common |
| Hit Points | 10 |
| Size | Medium |
| Speed | 25 feet |
| Attribute boosts | Two free boosts |
| Attribute flaw | None |
| Languages | Common, Orcish, plus Intelligence-based bonus languages |
| Traits | Humanoid, Orc |
| Sense | Darkvision |
| Core identity | Durable, physical, intimidating, anti-magic, survival-focused |
That snapshot is stronger than it looks. Two free boosts mean Orcs are no longer trapped in the "Strength only" box. Darkvision is always relevant. Ten ancestry HP makes low-level play less fragile. The feat list then gives you the choice between toughness, skill utility, weapons, unarmed attacks, animal training, and magical resistance.
The ancestry's defining rule, though, is not a base trait. It is Orc Ferocity. Staying at 1 HP instead of dropping changes encounters. It lets a healer buy one more round. It lets a defender keep a doorway sealed. It lets a martial finish a turn that should have ended on the floor.
Why Play An Orc
Play an Orc if you want:
- A durable ancestry that works for almost any martial class.
- Darkvision without spending a heritage on it.
- A survival feat chain that remains relevant across the campaign.
- Intimidation, Athletics, and battlefield presence.
- A character whose ancestry can visibly change combat outcomes.
Do not play an Orc if you want:
- Built-in spellcasting.
- Small-size stealth comedy.
- A delicate ancestry package that mostly lives in social scenes.
- A character who never takes risks.
Orcs are not subtle about their strengths. That is fine. PF2e has enough subtlety hiding in action economy, conditions, degrees of success, and "actually, the boss has Reactive Strike." The ancestry can afford to be direct.
Heritage Rankings
Hold-Scarred Orc ●
Hold-Scarred increases your ancestry Hit Points from 10 to 12 and grants Diehard. That is good on every class and excellent on frontliners. It stacks cleanly with the whole Orc fantasy: you survive damage, keep fighting, and make dying take extra paperwork.
Best on Barbarian, Fighter, Champion, Guardian, Monk, and any build planning the Ferocity chain.
Battle-Ready Orc ●
Battle-Ready trains Intimidation and gives Intimidating Glare. This is one of the easiest heritages to use because Demoralize is a real combat action and Intimidating Glare removes the language problem.
Best on Fighter, Barbarian, Champion, Commander, Thaumaturge, and any character who wants a one-action fear button.
Grave Orc ●
Grave Orc gives void resistance equal to half your level, with a minimum of 1, and a bonus against death and void effects. That is campaign-dependent, but when undead, void magic, necromancers, and death effects show up, it feels great.
Best on undead-heavy campaigns, Cleric, Champion, Oracle, Thaumaturge, and characters with a "survived something that should have ended me" backstory.
Deep Orc ●
Deep Orc gives Terrain Expertise for underground terrain and Combat Climber. This is excellent when the campaign uses caverns, cliffs, ruined mines, tunnels, and vertical dungeon spaces.
Best on Ranger, Rogue, Monk, Investigator, Barbarian, and any campaign that treats the map like a problem rather than wallpaper.
Winter Orc ●
Winter Orc trains Survival and reduces environmental cold severity by one step. This is excellent in frozen campaigns and merely fine elsewhere.
Best on Ranger, Druid, wilderness Barbarian, travel-heavy parties, and campaigns using environment rules.
Badlands Orc ●
Badlands Orc doubles your Hustle duration before stopping and reduces environmental heat severity by one step. That can matter a lot in desert or volcanic travel. It can also do almost nothing in a city campaign.
Best on desert, wasteland, jungle-edge, volcanic, and long-distance exploration games.
Rainfall Orc ●
Rainfall Orc gives bonuses to Climb and Swim and a bonus against disease. This is good in jungle, swamp, river, coastal, or disease-heavy campaigns. It is not a universal pick.
Best on Athletics characters, wet terrain campaigns, Ranger, Druid, and anyone whose GM keeps describing rope bridges with suspicious enthusiasm.

Ancestry Feat Rankings
Level 1 Feats
| Feat | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Orc Ferocity ● | The iconic survival reaction. Best for anyone who expects to be hit. |
| Orc Superstition ● | A reaction bonus against spells and magical effects before rolling. Excellent in magic-heavy games. |
| Battle-Ready heritage plus Demoralize support ● | Not a feat, but it is the easiest level 1 Orc combat package. |
| Hold Mark ● | Skill training plus a status bonus against one spell tradition. Best when you know your theme. |
| Orc Lore ● | Athletics, Survival, and Orc Lore. Good practical breadth. |
| Beast Trainer ● | Nature plus Pet or Train Animal. Good if you plan companion, pet, or animal scenes. |
| Orc Weapon Familiarity ● | Good for greataxe, falchion, or orc weapon builds. Better if your class benefits from weapon breadth. |
| Tusks ● | A finesse 1d6 piercing unarmed attack. Stronger for unarmed or backup-weapon builds. |
| Iron Fists ● | Better fists, but most builds either use weapons or take Tusks. |
Level 5 Feats
| Feat | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Defy Death ● | Improves recovery checks and removes some resurrection drawbacks. Best if you already took Orc Ferocity. |
| Athletic Might ● | Turns successful Climb and Swim checks into critical successes. Excellent in physical terrain campaigns. |
| Scar-Thick Skin ● | Makes persistent bleed easier to end. Strong when enemies use bleed often. |
| Bloody Blows ● | Adds persistent bleed on critical unarmed hits. Good only if your unarmed attacks crit reliably. |
Level 9 Feats
| Feat | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Pervasive Superstition ● | A constant bonus against spells and magical effects. Excellent on anyone fighting casters. |
| Undying Ferocity ● | Orc Ferocity now gives temporary HP equal to your level. This is the Ferocity chain growing teeth. |
Level 13 Feats
| Feat | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Incredible Ferocity ● | Orc Ferocity becomes once per hour instead of once per day. That is a major campaign-level upgrade. |
| Spell Devourer ● | When you succeed against a spell or magical effect, you gain temporary HP. Excellent after Orc Superstition. |
| Ferocious Beasts ● | Gives Orc Ferocity to companions, pets, familiars, and bonded animals. Great if you actually built around them. |
Level 17 Feat
| Feat | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Rampaging Ferocity ● | Trigger Orc Ferocity, make a melee Strike, and potentially avoid spending the Ferocity use if you drop a foe. Very Orc. Very dramatic. |
Feat Path Recommendations
The Stubborn Frontliner
| Level | Pick |
|---|---|
| 1 | Orc Ferocity |
| 5 | Defy Death |
| 9 | Undying Ferocity |
| 13 | Incredible Ferocity |
| 17 | Rampaging Ferocity |
This is the classic path. It is strongest on Barbarian, Fighter, Champion, Guardian, and Monk. You are not invincible, but you are much better at turning "that should drop you" into "not yet."
The Anti-Magic Bruiser
| Level | Pick |
|---|---|
| 1 | Orc Superstition |
| 5 | Athletic Might, Scar-Thick Skin, or Defy Death if you also took Ferocity |
| 9 | Pervasive Superstition |
| 13 | Spell Devourer |
| 17 | Rampaging Ferocity only if you later added Ferocity |
This is for campaigns with enemy spellcasters, curses, magical hazards, occult weirdness, and boss monsters with magical effects. It pairs especially well with Barbarian, Champion, Thaumaturge, and Monk.
The Beast Hold Rider
| Level | Pick |
|---|---|
| 1 | Beast Trainer |
| 5 | Athletic Might or Defy Death |
| 9 | Undying Ferocity if you have Orc Ferocity |
| 13 | Ferocious Beasts |
| 17 | Rampaging Ferocity if melee-focused |
This path wants an animal companion, pet, bonded animal, or familiar. It is best on Ranger, Druid, Commander, and beast-themed Barbarian builds.
The Weapon Traditionalist
| Level | Pick |
|---|---|
| 1 | Orc Weapon Familiarity |
| 5 | Athletic Might or Defy Death |
| 9 | Undying Ferocity or Pervasive Superstition |
| 13 | Incredible Ferocity or Spell Devourer |
| 17 | Rampaging Ferocity |
This path is for players who want the greataxe, falchion, or orc weapon identity to matter. It is good, but be honest: if your class already has strong martial weapon access, this is more about flavor plus critical specialization than raw optimization.
Best Classes
Barbarian ●
Barbarian is the loudest Orc pairing and also one of the best. High HP, rage, physical pressure, Athletics, Intimidation, and Ferocity all point in the same direction.
Best picks: Hold-Scarred or Battle-Ready, Orc Ferocity, Defy Death, Undying Ferocity, Incredible Ferocity, Rampaging Ferocity, Athletics, and Intimidation.
Fighter ●
Fighter makes the Orc's martial package more reliable because Fighter accuracy makes every weapon, Demoralize follow-up, and Rampaging Ferocity Strike more frightening.
Best picks: Hold-Scarred, Battle-Ready, Orc Ferocity, Orc Weapon Familiarity, Orc Superstition, weapons, weapon traits, and flanking.
Champion ●
Champion likes ancestry durability because it spends so much time standing where the hits are. Orc Ferocity is also excellent for defenders because dropping can unravel the party's front line.
Best picks: Hold-Scarred, Grave Orc, Orc Ferocity, Defy Death, shields, armor, Religion, and shields and Shield Block.
Guardian And Commander ●
Guardian and Commander both fit Orc play well. Guardian likes not falling over. Commander likes Battle-Ready, Intimidation, and the Monster Core idea of Orc leaders using force of presence to improve allies.
Best picks: Battle-Ready, Hold-Scarred, Orc Ferocity, Hold Mark, Battlecry, skirmish warfare, and encounter building.
Ranger ●
Ranger can use Orc in several directions: beast trainer, wilderness survivor, two-weapon frontliner, thrown weapon skirmisher, or darkvision scout.
Best picks: Winter Orc, Deep Orc, Rainfall Orc, Beast Trainer, Orc Lore, Athletic Might, Ferocious Beasts, Survival, and Nature.
Monk ●
Monk likes free boosts, durability, and unarmed options. Tusks and Iron Fists are not mandatory, but they support a body-as-weapon concept.
Best picks: Hold-Scarred, Tusks, Iron Fists, Bloody Blows, Orc Ferocity, Defy Death, Acrobatics, and Athletics.
Thaumaturge ●
Thaumaturge works because Orc can supply durability and anti-magic instincts while Thaumaturge supplies knowledge, implements, and monster problem-solving. Battle-Ready also helps Charisma-based Intimidation.
Best picks: Battle-Ready, Grave Orc, Orc Superstition, Pervasive Superstition, Spell Devourer, Occultism, and magic items.
Druid, Cleric, Oracle, And Sorcerer ●
Casters do not need Orc, but they can use it. Darkvision, 10 HP, Hold-Scarred, Grave Orc, and Orc Superstition make fragile casters less fragile. Divine and primal casters also fit the survival, death, beast, and hostile-environment themes.
Best picks: Grave Orc, Hold-Scarred, Beast Trainer, Orc Superstition, Spell Devourer, divine spells, primal spells, and the rules hub.
Attributes And Skills
Orcs get two free boosts, so your class decides the stat plan.
| Build | Attribute Priorities |
|---|---|
| Strength martial | Strength, Constitution, Wisdom |
| Dexterity martial | Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom |
| Intimidation martial | Strength or Dexterity, Constitution, Charisma |
| Companion build | Class key attribute, Constitution, Wisdom |
| Caster | Casting attribute, Constitution, Dexterity or Wisdom |
| Thaumaturge | Charisma, Constitution, Strength or Dexterity |
Best Skill Links
| Skill | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Athletics | Orc Lore, Athletic Might, climbing, swimming, grappling, shoving, and physical challenges. |
| Intimidation | Battle-Ready, Hold Mark, Demoralize, battlefield command, and Orc social pressure. |
| Survival | Orc Lore, Winter Orc, wilderness travel, tracking, and hold-scout concepts. |
| Nature | Beast Trainer, animal companions, pets, Train Animal, and Ferocious Beasts. |
| Religion | Grave Orc, death effects, undead campaigns, and divine themes. |
| Occultism | Superstition, anti-magic themes, and Thaumaturge builds. |
Equipment
| Equipment | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Armor ● | Most Orc frontliners should not rely on HP alone. Use armor, runes, and class proficiency. |
| Shields ● | Shields are excellent for Champions, Guardians, Fighters, and anyone trying to survive one more hit. |
| Greataxe and falchion ● | Orc Weapon Familiarity explicitly supports classic heavy weapon builds. |
| Orc weapons ● | Good for theme and access. Best if your class gets value from the proficiency shift. |
| Thrown weapons ● | Monster Core Orc examples lean on javelins. PCs should keep ranged backup too. |
| Athletics gear ● | Climbing kits, rope, and practical gear matter more when you invest in Athletic Might, Deep Orc, or Rainfall Orc. |
| Healing and consumables ● | Ferocity keeps you upright at 1 HP. It does not heal you. Bring potions, elixirs, and party Medicine. |
| Worn invested items ● | Use worn items to patch mobility, saves, skills, or senses. |
Example Builds
The Hold-Scarred Fighter
| Choice | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Heritage | Hold-Scarred Orc |
| Class | Fighter |
| Key feats | Orc Ferocity, Defy Death, Undying Ferocity, Incredible Ferocity, Rampaging Ferocity |
| Skills | Athletics, Intimidation |
| Equipment | Heavy armor if available, greataxe or sword-and-board, javelins, healing consumables |
This is the cleanest Orc build. You hit accurately, you survive ugly turns, and you have enough action options to be more than a sack of hit points with opinions.
The Battle-Ready Commander
| Choice | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Heritage | Battle-Ready Orc |
| Class | Commander or Champion |
| Key feats | Hold Mark, Orc Ferocity, Pervasive Superstition |
| Skills | Intimidation, Society, Athletics |
| Equipment | Armor, shield, reach or command-friendly weapon, javelins |
This build turns the Orc social stereotype into a combat tool. Demoralize, commands, defensive positioning, and battle presence all reinforce each other.
The Superstition Barbarian
| Choice | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Heritage | Hold-Scarred, Battle-Ready, or Grave Orc |
| Class | Barbarian |
| Key feats | Orc Superstition, Pervasive Superstition, Spell Devourer |
| Skills | Athletics, Intimidation, Survival |
| Equipment | Big weapon, armor, backup thrown weapon, healing consumables |
This is for campaigns where the enemy wizard keeps smiling. The point is not that magic stops being dangerous. The point is that you get better at making magical enemies work for it.
The Beast Hold Ranger
| Choice | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Heritage | Winter Orc, Deep Orc, or Rainfall Orc |
| Class | Ranger |
| Key feats | Beast Trainer, Orc Lore, Athletic Might, Ferocious Beasts |
| Skills | Nature, Survival, Athletics |
| Equipment | Bow or thrown weapon backup, melee weapon, survival gear, companion support items |
This build plays into the Monster Core note that Orcs often work with frightening beasts. It is also mechanically tidy: Ranger already cares about tracking, terrain, and companions.
GM Core And Monster Core Notes
GM Core matters for Orc PCs because many Orc heritages are only as relevant as the campaign environment. If no one uses heat, cold, disease, cliffs, caves, void damage, death effects, or magical enemies, several heritage and feat choices lose their shine.
Use environment, hazards, skill check DCs, subsystems, and encounter building to make those choices matter without punishing the player for taking them.
Monster Core gives a useful tactical mirror. Orc scrappers, veterans, and commanders emphasize darkvision, Athletics, Intimidation, Survival, Ferocity, thrown javelins, brutal melee weapons, and leadership through physical presence. For PC advice, that means:
- Carry a ranged option even if you are a melee character.
- Use Intimidation when it saves more damage than a third Strike would deal.
- Treat Ferocity as a tempo tool, not a replacement for healing.
- Let Orc leaders be tactical, not just loud.
- Use terrain, beasts, and group pressure when building Orc-heavy encounters.
Common Mistakes
Taking Orc Ferocity Then Ignoring Healing
Orc Ferocity leaves you at 1 HP and increases wounded. That is a warning label. Have a healer, Medicine, potions, or a defensive plan.
Picking An Environmental Heritage In The Wrong Campaign
Badlands, Rainfall, Winter, and Deep are good when the campaign supports them. Ask the GM before building your whole ancestry around frostbite in a ballroom intrigue campaign.
Thinking Tusks Are Automatically Better Than Weapons
Tusks are useful, but they are not a whole build by themselves. They shine as backup attacks, unarmed support, or flavor on classes that already care about unarmed combat.
Overvaluing Bloody Blows
Persistent bleed on unarmed critical hits sounds vicious, but it depends on landing critical unarmed Strikes. If you are not built for that, take something more reliable.
Treating Orcs As Dumb By Default
Player Core Orcs have two free boosts and no Intelligence flaw. Orc Investigator, Orc Wizard, Orc Commander, and Orc Thaumaturge are all legitimate. The "Orc must be stupid" take belongs in the same bin as unsharpened pencils and third-action MAP Strikes.
Hot Take
Hold-Scarred is the broad defensive default because extra ancestry Hit Points and Diehard are hard to beat. Battle-Ready adds Intimidating Glare at level 1, turning Demoralize into a language-independent combat tool.
Orc Superstition is a strong response to enemy casters. Pervasive Superstition and Spell Devourer give the ancestry a distinct anti-magic lane alongside Ferocity. Grave Orc is a campaign choice: it shines against undead, void magic, necromancers, and death effects, but offers little when those threats are absent.
Every Orc benefits from a second button after Ferocity: Demoralize, Trip, Shove, Raise a Shield, Command an Animal, Battle Medicine, a thrown weapon, or a spell. Survival is more useful when the character can act effectively afterward.
Final Verdict
Orcs are one of the strongest common ancestry choices for durable, physical, risk-friendly characters in PF2e Remastered. They are easy to build, easy to understand, and much more flexible than the old fantasy stereotype. The best Orcs are hard to remove, good under pressure, and built around a clear table role.
Choose Hold-Scarred if you want the safest all-purpose Orc. Choose Battle-Ready if you want combat Intimidation. Choose Grave, Deep, Winter, Badlands, or Rainfall when the campaign makes those environments and damage types matter. Then decide whether you are a Ferocity Orc, a Superstition Orc, a Beast Trainer Orc, or a weapon-tradition Orc.
