The short answer

Surkis are a rare Medium PF2e Remastered ancestry from Howl of the Wild with 8 Hit Points, 25-foot Speed, a Constitution boost and free boost, no printed flaw, darkvision, and Magiphage. Magiphage ties the ancestry's spells and magical actions to an arcane, divine, occult, or primal tradition. Lantern and Hardshell are the broadest heritage choices, while Elytron and Breaker reward campaign-specific vertical or physical play.

Introduction

Surki are the rare ancestry for players who want their character sheet to feel like a biological field journal with spell nodes.

From Howl of the Wild, Surkis are subterranean insectile humanoids emerging from the Darklands through long generation digs. They absorb ambient magic from the world, develop through metamorphosis, and express identity through adaptation. Mechanically, that gives you a rare Medium ancestry with 8 Hit Points, Constitution plus a free boost, darkvision, magiphage, and a short but highly thematic list of heritages and feats.

The central build question is: "What kind of magic did the world feed you, and what are you becoming because of it?"

That question matters mechanically. Magiphage ties your Surki spells and magical actions to a chosen tradition. Heritages create different adaptation lines. Grand Metamorphosis turns heritage flavor into stronger powers. Secondary Adaptation and Unlimited Pluripotency let you keep changing over time. Surki reward builds that develop as the campaign reveals new problems.

Use this guide with the main ancestry hub, heritage guide, classes hub, Howl of the Wild guide, spell guides, archetypes, Survival, Arcana, Nature, Occultism, Religion, Crafting, environment rules, and session zero.

A Lantern Surki lights a Darklands cave collapse with its abdominal nodes while companions inspect a green magical fissure.

Surki are sturdy but not locked into one class shape. Constitution is universally useful, and the free boost lets you support Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as needed. That means Surki can be martial, caster, skill character, or defender.

The ancestry is rare, so the character's place in the campaign deserves a conversation. Decide whether Surkis are newly surfacing, studied, feared, unknown, tied to a local ecosystem, or part of a nearby settlement. The answer gives the ancestry a place in the party and the setting.

Why Play A Surki

Play a Surki if you want:

  • A rare ancestry with strong campaign hooks.
  • Constitution plus a free boost and no printed flaw.
  • Darkvision without spending heritage budget.
  • A magical biology tied to arcane, divine, occult, or primal tradition.
  • Heritages that evolve into bigger powers later.
  • A character about adaptation, exploration, environment, and metamorphosis.
  • Good fits for Druid, Ranger, Champion, Guardian, Sorcerer, Wizard, Witch, Cleric, Oracle, Alchemist, and Inventor.

Do not play a Surki if you want:

  • Common ancestry access with no GM conversation.
  • A huge ancestry feat catalog.
  • A simple "pick one heritage and forget it" ancestry.
  • A build where magical tradition choice never matters.

Surki are straightforward to play, but their best features need room at the table. Make magiphage, adaptation, environment, or metamorphosis matter in play.

Magiphage Tradition Choices

Magiphage does two major things. First, a Surki usually does not need to eat or drink unless the environment is especially magic-poor. Second, you choose a tradition of magic that shaped you as a larva, and that tradition governs Surki spells and magical actions.

That choice affects Sequestered Spell, Surki Lore, Consume Magic, and the flavor of your magical biology.

TraditionBest Fit
Primal ●Druids, Rangers, wilderness campaigns, elemental magic, ecosystems, travel, and Howl of the Wild themes.
Arcane ●Wizards, Inventors, Alchemists, magical research, item play, and knowledge-heavy campaigns.
Occult ●Witches, Psychics, Bards, strange senses, mind-adjacent stories, and mystery campaigns.
Divine ●Clerics, Champions, Oracles, natural faith, keystone species worship, and sacred ecology.

Primal Magiphage ●

Primal is the most obvious Surki choice because the ancestry's themes are environmental, adaptive, and tied to living systems. It fits Druid, Ranger, wilderness Sorcerer, and Nature builds.

Arcane Magiphage ●

Arcane is the best choice when your Surki is a magical researcher, artificer, inventor, or spell analyst. It pairs well with Wizard, Inventor, Alchemist, Arcana, Crafting, and magic items.

Occult Magiphage ●

Occult is strong when you want weird perception, uncanny adaptation, dreams, memory, minds, hidden traditions, and unsettling magic. It fits Witch, Psychic, Bard, and Occultism.

Divine Magiphage ●

Divine is best when the Surki's ecology becomes theology. Howl of the Wild frames Surki beliefs around ecosystems, natural deities, and keystone species, so divine Surki can feel excellent if the campaign cares about faith, duty, oaths, or sacred natural order. Use Cleric, Champion, Oracle, and Religion.

Heritage Rankings

Lantern Surki ●

Lantern Surki gives magical light from your abdominal nodes, with control over color and whether the light is active. That is useful from level 1 because light, darkness, visibility, and exploration are constant practical problems.

The evolutions are also strong. Lantern Beam gives a line of fire damage that scales with level. Lantern Strobe gives a cone that can dazzle or briefly blind opponents on bad saves. Both use the higher of class DC or spell DC, which keeps the heritage relevant across martial and caster builds.

Best on Druid, Ranger, Wizard, Witch, Sorcerer, Champion, and any party that spends time underground.

Hardshell Surki ●

Hardshell Surki gives built-in medium armor through your carapace. It has armor statistics and rune support, but you cannot remove it or wear other armor. That makes it excellent for characters who want a durable body plan and less good for builds that need flexible armor choices.

The evolutions are excellent: one can reduce a physical critical hit to a normal hit on a flat check, and the other creates resistance against magical damage tied to your magiphage tradition. That is real defensive identity.

Best on Champion, Guardian, Cleric, Oracle, Druid, and defensive casters who can live with the armor profile.

Elytron Surki ●

Elytron Surki prevents falling damage. That is campaign-dependent at level 1, but the evolution package is appealing: once-per-day self-only fly or Stridulating Song, a sustained sickened effect against one target.

This heritage is strongest when verticality matters. If the campaign has cliffs, shafts, towers, flying enemies, ship rigging, canyons, or high-magic exploration, Elytron gets much better.

Best on mobile Rangers, Druids, Swashbucklers, Monks, and casters who want future flight without making the whole character about it.

Breaker Surki ●

Breaker Surki gives a 1d4 claw unarmed attack with agile, finesse, and versatile bludgeoning. That is useful for unarmed backup, finesse skirmishers, and characters who want the physical digger identity.

The evolutions are the real reason to care: one improves the claw into a magical digging wedge with razing and force versatility, while the other helps resist forced movement and can carve difficult terrain along the path of forced movement.

Best on Monk, Rogue, Ranger, Barbarian, Fighter, and physical explorers.

Ancestry Feat Rankings

Level 1 Feats

FeatBest Use
Vestigial Magicsense ●Vague 30-foot magicsense and tradition identification. The most distinctive exploration feat.
Surki Lore ●Survival plus the skill tied to your magiphage tradition, with Surki Lore. Excellent skill compression.
Sequestered Spell ●One innate cantrip from your magiphage tradition. Strong if you pick a cantrip that solves a real problem.
Surki Weapon Familiarity ●Pick, light hammer, sickle, scythe, and an axe or hammer option. Good for weapon-themed builds, easy to skip otherwise.
Small Speak ●Talk to insects, arthropods, and terrestrial invertebrates. Great at the right table, decorative at the wrong one.

Vestigial Magicsense is the most Surki feat. It makes the character's magical biology matter during exploration instead of only in backstory. It is vague, not precise, so it does not replace Arcana, Nature, Occultism, Religion, or actual investigation. It tells you that magic is present and what tradition it tastes like. That is enough to change decisions.

Surki Lore is the safest mechanical pick because Survival plus your tradition skill gives you exactly the skills the ancestry wants. If you want the efficient option, start there.

Level 5 Feats

FeatBest Use
Secondary Adaptation ●Gain another Surki heritage and its benefits. The cleanest expression of Surki adaptability.
Chemical Trail ●Better Sense Direction and reorientation. Strong in exploration and travel.
Tunnel Roll ●Fast downhill movement in tunnels and inclines. Fun, but terrain-dependent and risky.

Secondary Adaptation is the level 5 headline. Getting another heritage can mean Hardshell plus Lantern, Breaker plus Elytron, or any other combination that supports the campaign you have actually been playing.

Chemical Trail is practical if the game uses travel, caves, mazes, wilderness navigation, or subsystems. Tunnel Roll is memorable, but it is not subtle. Once you roll down the tunnel, everyone knows the Surki had an idea. Whether it was a good idea is a separate hearing.

Level 9 Feats

FeatBest Use
Grand Metamorphosis ●Gain an evolution from a Surki heritage. Can be taken multiple times. This is the ancestry's power turn.
Nodal Healing ●Ten-minute self-healing based on Constitution and level, cumulative with Treat Wounds. Excellent sustain.
Consume Magic ●Once-per-hour reaction against area effects matching your magiphage tradition. Potentially protects allies, but it is narrow.

Grand Metamorphosis is the reason Surki heritage rankings matter. Lantern gains beam or strobe. Hardshell gains critical-hit mitigation or magical damage resistance. Elytron gains flight or Stridulating Song. Breaker gains a stronger claw package or forced-movement counterplay.

Nodal Healing is less flashy, but it is easy to use. Ten-minute recovery matters in PF2e because adventuring pace often revolves around Treat Wounds, refocusing, repairing, and searching between encounters.

Level 13 Feats

FeatBest Use
Generation Digger ●Gain a 15-foot burrow Speed. Excellent for exploration, positioning, and campaign texture.
Magitaxis ●Reaction movement toward a creature casting matching-tradition magic if you have Vestigial Magicsense. Strong but narrow.

Generation Digger is the standout because burrow Speeds are not normal movement toys. They change routes, escape plans, scouting, siege logic, and how the GM thinks about terrain. Talk with the GM before assuming every wall is now a suggestion.

Magitaxis is cool and strange. It is best when your magiphage tradition lines up with common enemy spellcasting, or when the GM builds encounters where magical signatures matter.

Level 17 Feat

FeatBest Use
Unlimited Pluripotency ●Swap a Surki heritage after deep sleep and daily preparations. If you had evolutions, you can choose new evolutions for the replacement heritage.

Unlimited Pluripotency is the ancestry's capstone idea: tomorrow, you can be adapted differently. It lets high-level Surki respond to the campaign's changing needs.

9Grand Metamorphosis for Lantern Beam or Lantern Strobe
13Generation Digger or Magitaxis
17Unlimited Pluripotency

This is the best path if you want the ancestry to create visible combat effects. Lantern Strobe is control. Lantern Beam is damage. Both make your ancestry show up in encounter mode instead of living only in exploration notes.

The Darklands Digger

LevelPick
1Surki Lore
5Chemical Trail or Secondary Adaptation
9Grand Metamorphosis with Breaker options
13Generation Digger
17Unlimited Pluripotency

This path is strongest in caves, ruins, underground travel, Darklands routes, and campaigns where environment, hazards, and map geometry matter.

Best Classes

Druid ●

Druid is the cleanest thematic fit. Primal magiphage, Nature, ecosystems, adaptation, environmental worship, and wilderness exploration all point in the same direction.

Lantern Surki gives light and later magical actions. Elytron Surki supports vertical exploration. Hardshell Surki can support a sturdier caster if armor compatibility works for your build. Breaker Surki fits earth, tunnels, and physical adaptation.

Ranger ●

Ranger fits Surki curiosity, travel, Survival, Darklands movement, and ecological observation. Constitution is welcome, the free boost handles Dexterity or Strength, and Surki Lore gives efficient exploration skills.

Use Survival, Nature, Stealth, movement actions, and environment rules to make the ancestry matter.

Champion ●

Champion works because Surki can be sturdy, principled, and tied to sacred ecology. Hardshell Surki is the obvious heritage, especially if you want the carapace to define the character's defense.

Divine magiphage makes sense for a Champion whose oath is connected to nature, travel, change, or protecting living systems. This is one of the better examples of "weird ancestry, coherent table role."

Guardian ●

Guardian likes Constitution, durability, defensive identity, and being hard to move out of the important square. Hardshell Surki is the best match, while Breaker Surki can add forced-movement and terrain flavor after Grand Metamorphosis.

This is a strong pick if your table supports Battlecry content and wants the Surki's adaptations to become a protection plan.

Sorcerer ●

Sorcerer can turn magiphage into a natural explanation for spellcasting. The Surki does not provide Charisma, so the free boost needs to go there, but Constitution and darkvision are useful.

This is best when your bloodline, magiphage tradition, and Sequestered Spell all point in the same direction.

Wizard ●

Wizard likes Arcane magiphage, Vestigial Magicsense, Surki Lore, and the "student of ambient magic" concept. The free boost can go to Intelligence, and Constitution helps keep the fragile scholar alive.

This pairing is less obvious than Druid, but it is mechanically clean.

Witch ●

Witch fits occult, primal, or arcane Surki extremely well. The ancestry's senses, odd biology, and metamorphosis all pair with patron magic without much effort.

Use Witch spells, occult spells, primal spells, or arcane spells, depending on the patron and tradition.

Cleric ●

Cleric works when the Surki's ecology becomes faith. Divine magiphage, natural deities, keystone species beliefs, and environmental stewardship can all support a Cleric who is more than "standard temple priest, but bug-shaped."

The free boost goes to Wisdom. Constitution helps. Lantern and Hardshell are both useful.

Oracle ●

Oracle fits if you want magical saturation to feel like a burden, revelation, or bodily transformation. Divine magiphage is obvious, but occult or primal themes can also work depending on the mystery.

This is more concept-dependent than Champion or Druid, but the concept can be excellent.

Alchemist ●

Alchemist works through biological curiosity, experimentation, and practical adaptation. Constitution is welcome, and the free boost goes to Intelligence.

The ancestry does not directly improve bombs or alchemical items, so do not oversell the mechanics. The fit is good because the theme and attribute spread cooperate.

Inventor ●

Inventor fits Surki innovation and environmental problem-solving. Arcane magiphage and Crafting make the character feel like a living interface between biology and machinery.

Hardshell can conflict with some armor plans, so check the innovation and equipment path before committing.

Attributes And Skills

Attribute Priorities

Build TypeKey Priorities
Druid, Cleric, Ranger supportWisdom first, Constitution next
Sorcerer, OracleCharisma first, Constitution next
Wizard, Witch, Inventor, AlchemistIntelligence first, Constitution next
Champion, Guardian, FighterStrength or Dexterity first, Constitution next
Rogue, Swashbuckler, ScoutDexterity first, Constitution next

Surki are flexible because Constitution plus a free boost does not dictate your class. The important part is not wasting the free boost. Put it in the class key attribute unless you have a very specific reason not to.

Best Skills

  • Survival - Core exploration skill and part of Surki Lore.
  • Nature - Excellent for primal magiphage, ecosystems, animals, plants, and Howl of the Wild themes.
  • Arcana - Best for arcane magiphage, magical research, and Wizard or Inventor concepts.
  • Occultism - Best for occult magiphage, Witch, Psychic, Bard, and mystery campaigns.
  • Religion - Best for divine magiphage, Cleric, Champion, Oracle, and sacred ecology.
  • Crafting - Good for tools, repairs, alchemical play, and adaptive technology.
  • Diplomacy - Useful if rare ancestry status creates first-contact scenes.

Equipment

Surki equipment should match heritage and class instead of chasing one universal kit.

Best Equipment Priorities

PriorityWhy It Matters
Armor runesHardshell Surki can etch armor runes onto the carapace. Do not forget this.
Adventuring gearDarklands travel, caves, and exploration need practical tools.
Skill toolsCrafting, Nature, Survival, and knowledge builds all benefit from proper kits and gear.
Worn invested itemsSurki often want hands free for weapons, shields, tools, or casting. Worn power is clean.
Staves and wandsGood for caster Surki who want their magiphage tradition to show up through magic use.
Ranged weaponsUseful for Lantern, Elytron, caster, and scout builds that avoid trading hits.
ShieldsGood for Hardshell defenders, Champions, Guardians, and durable casters if the action economy supports it.

Use armor, runes, adventuring gear and tools, worn invested items, staves and wands, ranged weapons, weapons, and shields for the broader equipment plan.

GM Core And Monster Core Notes

Surki need GM integration more than most common ancestries because the rare tag and Darklands emergence are part of the appeal. Use session zero to answer why the character is present, what the local region knows, and whether Surki settlements or generation digs matter to the campaign.

GM environment rules, hazards, skill DCs, subsystems, social encounters, and adventure hooks all help Surki feel like more than a stat block. Caves, magic-poor regions, strange ecosystems, first-contact settlements, and travel routes all give the ancestry texture.

Monster Core can support the campaign side by providing ecological mirrors: burrowers, insects, magical beasts, cave creatures, swarms, predators, and creatures shaped by environment. Use creature traits, creatures by level, monster families, and encounter use when building scenes around Surki themes.

Howl of the Wild also adds the Ostilli Host archetype, which has Surki access and strong symbiote flavor. The site has no dedicated Ostilli guide yet, so use the Howl of the Wild guide and archetype guide for now.

Common Mistakes

Ignoring The Rare Tag

Rare ancestry access calls for a conversation and a campaign connection. A Surki without either loses a useful part of the ancestry's premise.

Choosing Magiphage For Flavor Only

Magiphage affects Surki spells and magical actions. It also affects Surki Lore and Consume Magic. Pick a tradition that works with your class and expected enemies.

Taking Hardshell Without Reading The Armor Limits

Hardshell is strong, but it replaces normal armor flexibility. If your build depends on different armor choices, check that before locking it in.

Forgetting Grand Metamorphosis

Surki heritages are built with evolution in mind. If you never look at Grand Metamorphosis, you are judging the ancestry with half the page covered.

Treating Vestigial Magicsense As Precise Detection

Magicsense is vague. It tells you magic is present and helps identify tradition flavor, but it does not point to every invisible magical problem with courtroom certainty. Pair it with skills and cautious play.

Hot Take

Surki's Constitution boost and free boost make it unusually flexible across roles. Lantern Surki is the broad heritage choice because its abdominal light helps at level 1 and its evolutions become usable encounter tools. Hardshell is strong when its fixed armor profile fits the build, so review its armor limits before committing.

Vestigial Magicsense makes the ancestry's biology relevant at the table. Unlimited Pluripotency gives high-level Surki an adaptation that remains strange, powerful, and connected to the ancestry's central theme.

Final Verdict

Surki are a strong ancestry for campaigns that care about exploration, magic, ecology, rare peoples, and adaptation. They are especially good for Druids, Rangers, Champions, Guardians, Wizards, Witches, Sorcerers, Clerics, Oracles, Alchemists, and Inventors.

The strongest picks are Lantern Surki, Hardshell Surki, Vestigial Magicsense, Surki Lore, Secondary Adaptation, Grand Metamorphosis, Generation Digger, and Unlimited Pluripotency. Build around a magiphage tradition that actually supports your class, then let the ancestry evolve with the campaign.
