PF2e Battlecry Archetypes Guide

The short answer

The best PF2e Battlecry archetypes match a real battlefield job and the campaign's scope: Commander and Guardian work in ordinary adventures, while Captain, Guerrilla, Field Propagandist, War Mage, Munitions Master, and Necrologist need war, faction, siege, or battlefield play to pay off.

Introduction

Battlecry archetypes are not one big pile of "soldier feats." They are a toolkit for war stories: command, bodyguard duty, infiltration, battlefield magic, propaganda, followers, irregular warfare, munitions, formal duels, and death-soaked battlefields.

An orc commander signals a retreat through a city gate while a dwarf defender shields the route and a scout marks a safe path.

That makes them more campaign-sensitive than normal multiclass archetypes. A Commander dedication can matter in almost any tactical party. A Field Propagandist needs factions, public opinion, and consequences. A Guerrilla wants terrain, patrols, scouting, and ambushes. A Munitions Master wants the table to care about siege gear, spacing, and setup. If the campaign is just "kick open dungeon door, meet four monsters in a square room," some of these options become very dramatic hats.

Use this guide with the PF2e archetypes hub, Free Archetype guide, dedication feats ranked, archetype combinations, Battlecry book hub, skirmish warfare, war campaigns, battle magic, and siege rituals.

Rating Key

RatingMeaning
● ExcellentStrong in many parties or very high ceiling when the campaign supports it
● StrongGood, but asks for the right class, party, or adventure structure
● SituationalReal value, but narrow, costly, rare, or easy to misuse
● NicheUsually avoid unless the campaign is built for it

Quick Verdict

ArchetypeBest usersMain reason to take it
Commander multiclass ●Bard, Investigator, Wizard, Fighter, Rogue, ExemplarAdds tactics, a banner aura, Warfare Lore, and team positioning to classes with good personal turns
Guardian multiclass ●Fighter, Champion, Cleric, Monk, Ranger, bulky castersAdds armor access, Taunt, protection feats, and a real bodyguard lane
Captain ●Charisma leaders, social martials, support castersAdds a follower and campaign leadership tools, especially under Free Archetype
War Mage ●WizardTurns Wizard into a battlefield caster with armor, Shield Block, war magic, and formation pressure
Guerrilla ●Ranger, Rogue, Investigator, Druid, scout buildsExcellent in ambush, resistance, wilderness, and occupation campaigns
Field Propagandist ●Bard, Rogue, Swashbuckler, Commander, Charisma castersMakes faction pressure, morale, deception, and public messaging mechanically relevant
Aldori Duelist ●Fighter, Swashbuckler, Rogue, RangerStrong dueling identity with initiative, parry, riposte, and one-on-one tools
Crossbow Infiltrator ●Rogue, Ranger, Investigator, Gunslinger-style ranged buildsGives stealthy crossbow action smoothing, reload support, poison hooks, and ambush pressure
Iridian Choirmaster ●Coordinated duos, agile martials, support charactersPowerful when one ally is always your partner, awkward when party positioning is chaotic
Munitions Master ●Inventor onlyVery flavorful mortar/siege identity, but class archetype cost and setup are real
Necrologist ●Slot casters with summon undead accessRare, dramatic, and useful in undead war stories, but the horde asks for table buy-in

Hot Take: Commander and Guardian are the easiest Battlecry archetypes to recommend because they work in normal encounters. The stranger options need the GM to hand you missions instead of hallway cardio.

Battlecry Archetype Rules To Check First

Before choosing one of these, confirm the rule bucket.

Rule bucketWhat to verify
Multiclass archetypeCommander and Guardian follow multiclass dedication logic. You cannot take a multiclass dedication for your own class.
Class archetypeMunitions Master and War Mage change class assumptions and require early commitment. You cannot casually add them at level 8 because the vibe finally arrived.
Dedication lockAfter taking a dedication, you usually need two more feats from that archetype before taking another dedication. That tax is small in theory and very loud in practice.
Access and rarityAldori Duelist has setting access, Necrologist is rare, and several options assume GM permission or campaign fit.
Companion conflictsCaptain followers and Necrologist horde rules can conflict with other companion-style features. Read those prerequisites before promising the party your portable workforce.
Action economyCaptain, Commander, Guardian, Munitions Master, Necrologist, Guerrilla, and Crossbow Infiltrator all compete for actions or reactions. PF2e does not give refunds for optimism.

For the core rules context, see how archetypes work, three-action economy, reactions, and action compression feats.

Commander Multiclass Archetype

Commander multiclass rating ●: Strong across many parties.

Commander multiclass is the cleanest Battlecry pickup for characters who want to lead without changing their whole class. The dedication asks for Intelligence, gives you Warfare Lore, a commander DC, a limited tactics engine, and a banner aura used for your tactics. Later feats add more commander training and stronger tactical access.

Best Classes

ClassWhy it works
Bard ●Already supports the party, likes tactical positioning, and has Charisma skills for command scenes
Investigator ●Intelligence is already high, and the class fantasy of battlefield analysis fits perfectly
Wizard ●Intelligence is easy, and tactics help a caster contribute when the spell slot is not the answer
Fighter ●Strong personal turns make team commands easier to afford
Rogue ●Skill-heavy scouts and tacticians can turn positioning into Sneak Attack opportunities
Exemplar ●A mythic battlefield presence can coordinate allies without losing the big heroic feel

What You Actually Get

Commander dedication is mostly about borrowing the class's tactical language: a limited tactics folio, a banner aura for those tactics, and Warfare Lore. The follow-up feats matter because the dedication by itself is not a full command suite. Under Free Archetype, this becomes much more attractive because you can keep buying tactical depth without cannibalizing core class feats.

Watchouts

Do not take Commander multiclass if nobody at the table wants to be positioned, moved, supported, or coordinated. This archetype is not a solo damage button. It is a party engine, and a party engine attached to a party that ignores it is just a decorative engine.

Guardian Multiclass Archetype

Guardian multiclass rating ●: Strong across many parties.

Guardian multiclass is the bodyguard archetype. The dedication asks for Strength and Constitution, gives Athletics, guardian DC, armor access, and Taunt. Later feats add defensive durability, intercept-style protection, armor resistance, and stronger Fortitude.

Best Classes

ClassWhy it works
Fighter ●Already accurate and sturdy, and can spend reactions on protecting key allies
Champion ●Leans into defense, armor, shields, and party protection
Cleric ●Warpriest-style Clerics can stand near allies and make protection plus healing miserable for enemies
Monk ●Durable mobile defenders can Taunt, reposition, and hold space
Ranger ●Strength-based or shield-oriented Rangers can protect a companion or backline ally

What You Actually Get

The early value is armor and Taunt. The later value is intercepting damage and becoming a more credible front line. This is one of the better Battlecry archetypes in ordinary adventuring because "enemy tries to hit the squishy person" is not a rare campaign premise.

Watchouts

Guardian asks you to be near the person you are protecting. If your party spreads across the map like spilled dice, your protection feats get sad. Pair this with movement actions, flanking and positioning, shields, and clear party tactics.

Captain Archetype

Captain rating ●: Stronger when the campaign supports followers.

Captain adds followers: NPC companions who support the character's command identity. It is not just "animal companion, but wearing boots." Followers have their own limitations, require direction, and are there to expand a leader's tactical and narrative footprint without stealing the table from the party.

Best Users

BuildWhy it works
Charisma martial ●Can lead in social scenes and still make use of a follower in combat
Bard or Commander-adjacent support ●Already wants to direct the party, so a follower extends the same job
Investigator face ●Can treat the follower as field support for scouting, medicine, or tactical errands
Any class with another companion ●Check conflicts first. Captain does not want to fight for oxygen with existing companion rules.

What You Actually Get

Captain dedication gives a follower and leadership skills. Follow-up feats can improve follower quality, add more followers, support downtime, and eventually make follower direction smoother. In campaigns with travel, war councils, military units, strongholds, scouting, or social logistics, Captain has a high ceiling.

Watchouts

Captain is table-sensitive. If the GM and party do not want an extra follower in scenes, it slows play. If they do, it can become one of the best war-story archetypes in the book. Use it with GM subsystems, war campaigns, and social encounters.

War Mage Class Archetype

War Mage rating ●: Strongest on the right battlefield.

War Mage is the Battlecry answer to "what if the Wizard attended officer school and came back with a shield?" It trades normal Wizard assumptions for battlefield casting: armor, Shield Block, war magic, and class feats that care about area spells, positioning, rituals, and martial spell support.

Best Users

This is for Wizard characters planning from level 1. Treat it as a build identity, not a late dip.

Build directionWhy it works
Battlefield controller ●Area spells and positioning effects are exactly what the archetype wants
Siege ritualist ●Pairs naturally with siege rituals and war campaign prep
Defensive Wizard ●Armor and shield tools help if the table actually attacks the caster
Weapon Wizard ●Possible, but expensive. Do not pretend a few weapon perks replace Fighter math.

What You Actually Get

War Mage reshapes the Wizard into a battlefield specialist. It cares about arcane spells, damaging areas, shield use, battlefield medicine hooks, rituals, and spellcasting under pressure. It also gives up meaningful Wizard class features, so the question is not "is this cool?" It is. The question is whether your campaign will reward the trade.

Watchouts

If your GM rarely uses large battle maps, formations, troops, siege scenes, or enemies vulnerable to area control, War Mage becomes mostly a style choice. Still stylish. Just not free.

Guerrilla Archetype

Guerrilla rating ●: Exceptional in the right campaign.

Guerrilla is for irregular warfare: ambushes, sabotage, hidden movement, local support, snares, poisons, and terrain advantage. It wants Stealth, Survival, and a campaign where favored locations matter.

Best Classes

ClassWhy it works
Ranger ●Already cares about tracking, terrain, scouting, and ranged pressure
Rogue ●Stealth plus ambush pressure is the Rogue's native language
Investigator ●Great for intelligence work, sabotage, and scouting missions
Druid ●Wilderness campaigns give the archetype enough room to breathe

What You Actually Get

Guerrilla gives stealth movement in a chosen environment, hit-and-run tools, snare pressure, simple poison support, sabotage, local support, fear from attrition, and late-game terrain ghost nonsense. In a resistance campaign, that is great. In a ten-foot corridor, it is a long way to say "I wish we were outside."

Watchouts

Talk to the GM before taking this. Guerrilla is excellent when the game includes patrols, occupied settlements, wilderness supply lines, and hidden approaches. If the GM runs only straight fights, consider Crossbow Infiltrator or a simpler martial archetype.

Field Propagandist Archetype

Field Propagandist rating ●: Exceptional in political war.

Field Propagandist is for war by reputation, morale, and public messaging. It uses Deception, Diplomacy, and Society to shape how factions and settlements respond.

Best Classes

ClassWhy it works
Bard ●Performance, social pressure, support magic, and propaganda all point the same direction
Rogue ●Skill increases and social deception make the archetype easy to feed
Swashbuckler ●The class already rewards theatrical social pressure
Commander ●A public-facing officer can make morale part of the build
Charisma casters ●Good if they can spare the skill investment

What You Actually Get

The archetype starts with propaganda and truth-bending defenses, then adds options that can stupefy enemies, invent vulnerabilities, harden allies with morale, influence settlements, and counter mental pressure through force of narrative. That is mechanically useful, but only if social war is real at your table.

Watchouts

Do not take Field Propagandist because you want a generic face archetype. Take it because the campaign has factions, rumors, armies, settlements, morale, and consequences for what people believe. For ordinary talking, see the skills hub and social encounters.

Aldori Duelist Archetype

Aldori Duelist rating ●: Good for a focused dueling build.

Aldori Duelist is the formal sword school option. It is uncommon, tied to setting access, and built around the Aldori dueling sword, parries, initiative, ripostes, one-on-one pressure, and dueling identity.

Best Classes

ClassWhy it works
Fighter ●Best weapon math, best chance to make duel tools matter
Swashbuckler ●Style, one-on-one pressure, and mobility fit the archetype
Rogue ●Feints, initiative, and off-guard setups can matter
Ranger ●Works for single-target duel builds that want a regional weapon identity

What You Actually Get

You get dueling sword access and familiarity, Dueling Lore hooks, parry support, initiative tools, riposte pressure, Demoralize tricks, crit mitigation, and eventually high-level duelist finishers. It is a focused package, not a generic "I own a sword" sticker.

Watchouts

This archetype cares about a specific weapon and a specific style. If your campaign will never honor duels, schools, rival swordspeople, or one-on-one threats, Fighter feats may do more raw work. Pair with weapons, weapon traits, Acrobatics, Athletics, and Intimidation.

Crossbow Infiltrator Archetype

Crossbow Infiltrator rating ●: Good for a stealthy ranged build.

Crossbow Infiltrator is for stealthy ranged missions. It focuses on hand crossbows, gauntlet bows, repeating hand crossbows, reload support, stealth actions, poison hooks, and ambush tempo.

Best Classes

ClassWhy it works
Rogue ●Stealth, surprise, skills, and single-shot accuracy are a natural match
Ranger ●Hunt Prey and ranged feat support help the crossbow plan
Investigator ●Devise a Stratagem makes careful single shots less swingy
Gunslinger ●Similar reload brain, but compare against firearm-specific options before committing

What You Actually Get

The dedication gives weapon familiarity and a draw/strike action pattern. Later feats smooth reloads, add stealth actions during reload, support repeating hand crossbows, add poison preparation, and build toward assassination-style bursts from concealment.

Watchouts

Crossbows live or die on action economy. If you are spending too many turns loading, hiding, drawing, and repositioning without meaningful shots, the archetype is doing interpretive accounting instead of damage. Review ranged weapons, stealth in combat, alchemical items, and consumables.

Iridian Choirmaster Archetype

Iridian Choirmaster rating ●: Good only with a reliable partner.

Iridian Choirmaster is a partner archetype. You choose a student, then gain options that reward mutual positioning, repeated coordination, shared perception, setup attacks, and coordinated defenses.

Best Users

BuildWhy it works
Agile martial duo ●A Fighter, Rogue, Monk, or Swashbuckler pair can keep the student bond active
Support character with one reliable ally ●Works when you and one ally routinely move together
Random public table build ●If party composition changes, your chosen student plan can collapse

What You Actually Get

The dedication lets you communicate nonverbally with your student. Follow-up lessons cover movement, attack setup, shared observation, reactive Athletics help, Feint payoffs, defensive tricks, and coordinated strikes. When the duo is planned, it is elegant. When the student keeps sprinting to the other side of the map, it is a group project with one missing group member.

Watchouts

Iridian Choirmaster is only as good as the player sitting across from you. If the party wants to coordinate, good. If everyone wants to freestyle, take something less dependent on a buddy system.

Munitions Master Class Archetype

Munitions Master rating ●: Demanding, but rewarding on the right maps.

Munitions Master is the Inventor light mortar class archetype. It is not a generic alchemist or bomber archetype. It changes the Inventor around a deployed siege-style innovation, then gives feats for aiming, loading, launching, smoke, celerity, repositioning, and structure damage.

Best Users

BuildWhy it works
Inventor in a war campaign ●The mortar identity pays off when maps, siege objectives, and area pressure matter
Inventor in normal dungeon crawls ●Setup, lines, space, and targeting can be awkward indoors
Any non-Inventor ●This is not your archetype

What You Actually Get

You get a light mortar innovation with action requirements and follow-up feats that support siege-style combat. This is one of the coolest Battlecry options if the campaign uses siege weapons and battle vehicles, battlefield equipment, and large maps. It is less exciting if every fight happens in a pantry.

Watchouts

Munitions Master needs physical space and table patience. A mortar build that never gets to deploy is not a build; it is a backpack with opinions.

Necrologist Archetype

Necrologist rating ●: Better for an undead-war campaign.

Necrologist is rare, spellcaster-facing, and built around raising an undead horde. It requires spell slots and summon undead access. The horde can move, attack in area-like patterns, protect space, and later gain more frightening battlefield functions.

Best Users

ClassWhy it works
Wizard ●Arcane access and preparation support the plan
Witch ●Occult or other traditions can fit the death magic story
Cleric ●Divine casters can make undead war feel campaign-relevant when the deity and theme allow it
Oracle ●Strong theme when spell access lines up; verify the build requirements

What You Actually Get

The defining feature is the horde: a huge mass of undead tied to your actions and defenses. Later feats can add temp HP from casualties, off-guard pressure, movement, concealment, ghostly or void-flavored effects, fear, draining, grabbing, and other undead battlefield problems.

Watchouts

Necrologist is not a casual summon-flavor dip. It is rare, table-visible, and mechanically chunky. It also needs the GM to allow the tone. If the campaign has monster pressure, battlefields, mass graves, or necromantic villains, great. If the campaign is about polite baking contests, maybe save it.

Political warField Propagandist, Captain, Commander, Aldori DuelistPublic opinion, duels, officers, and faction identity matter
Small dungeon crawlGuardian, Commander, Crossbow InfiltratorAvoid the options that require army-scale context

Best Free Archetype Picks

With Free Archetype, Battlecry gets much better because many of these identities need multiple feats.

Free Archetype priorityPicks
Best overallCommander, Guardian
Best campaign identityCaptain, Field Propagandist, Guerrilla
Best class archetype payoffWar Mage, Munitions Master if the campaign supports it
Best narrow story pickNecrologist, Iridian Choirmaster
Best low-drama martial add-onAldori Duelist, Crossbow Infiltrator

Without Free Archetype, be ruthless. The dedication has to beat class feats. That is a high bar, because PF2e class feats are not decorative throw pillows.

Action Economy Audit

ArchetypeWhat it competes with
CommanderYour own attacks, spellcasting, skill actions, and movement
GuardianYour reaction budget, positioning, and durability
CaptainDirecting a follower instead of spending the action yourself
War MageSpell slots, spellshape timing, shield use, and battlefield medicine action flow
GuerrillaHide/Sneak/Strike loops, reloads, snares, and terrain setup
Field PropagandistDeception and Diplomacy actions instead of direct damage
Aldori DuelistParry/riposte sequencing and weapon commitment
Crossbow InfiltratorReloads, stealth actions, drawing/stowing, and poison setup
Iridian ChoirmasterStaying close enough to one ally for lessons to matter
Munitions MasterDeploying, aiming, loading, launching, and moving the mortar
NecrologistRaising, sustaining, positioning, and protecting the horde

The boring question is the important one: "What action am I no longer taking?" If you cannot answer that, the archetype is probably adding clutter.

Recommended Builds

Investigator Commander

High Intelligence, strong skill coverage, and tactical decision-making make this one of the cleanest pairings. You contribute battlefield knowledge even when Devise a Stratagem says the attack is cursed.

Core links: Investigator, Commander, Lore, initiative.

Fighter Guardian

Fighter gives the accuracy and weapon pressure. Guardian adds Taunt, armor identity, and ally protection. This build tells enemies, politely through violence, that the backline is closed.

Core links: Fighter, Guardian, shields, reactions.

Rogue Crossbow Infiltrator

Stealth skills, ambush pressure, poison support, and ranged setup make this the strongest Crossbow Infiltrator shell. The build wants careful positioning, not heroic jogging into the center of the room.

Core links: Rogue, Stealth, ranged weapons, alchemical items.

Bard Field Propagandist

Bard already makes performance, social pressure, and morale matter. Field Propagandist turns that into faction warfare. If the GM likes rumor tables, settlement reactions, and enemy morale, this build gets to cook.

Core links: Bard, Performance, Diplomacy, social encounters.

Wizard War Mage

This is the signature battlefield caster path: armor, shields, area pressure, war magic, rituals, and formation control. It works best when the campaign has open maps and fights larger than "two angry things near a bookshelf."

Core links: Wizard, arcane spells, battle magic, siege rituals.

Ranger Guerrilla

Ranger supplies the scout frame. Guerrilla adds occupation-war tools: stealthy movement, snares, ambushes, sabotage, and local support. This build wants maps with approach vectors, not a broom closet with initiative.

Core links: Ranger, Survival, Stealth, skirmish warfare.

Hot Takes

Hot Take: Commander multiclass is the safest Battlecry archetype because every party understands "please stand in the good square."

Hot Take: Guardian multiclass shines when your GM attacks vulnerable allies. If every monster only attacks the highest-AC character, the monster union should file a complaint.

Hot Take: Captain is the strongest story archetype here when the table enjoys followers. It is also the fastest way to discover whether your table enjoys followers.

Hot Take: War Mage gives a Wizard a different job: battlefield casting that supports a military campaign. That distinction matters.

Hot Take: Guerrilla needs terrain. Without it, the archetype is a stealth package asking the room for emotional support.

Hot Take: Necrologist is complicated by default. A table that wants a simple summon-flavor dip should look elsewhere.

Final Recommendation

Pick Battlecry archetypes for a job, not a label.

For normal adventuring, start with Commander, Guardian, Aldori Duelist, or Crossbow Infiltrator. For a real war campaign, add Captain, War Mage, Field Propagandist, Guerrilla, Munitions Master, and Necrologist to the conversation. Under Free Archetype, these become some of the best identity layers in PF2e Remastered. Without Free Archetype, take only the ones that make your normal turn better by level 4 or 6.
