Introduction
Guardian feats are at their best when the GM has to pause before choosing a target. That pause is the class working.

Level 1-4 Priorities
Early Guardian feats should make the class's promise function: an ally is threatened, you are in the right place, and the enemy's obvious target choice gets worse.
| Early priority | Why |
|---|---|
| ● Bodyguard-style protection | Gives the build a clear charge and makes the bodyguard fantasy mechanical. |
| ● Reactive Shield / Shielding Taunt direction | Makes shield timing and Taunt smoother. |
| ● Movement and interception | Protection fails if you cannot reach the threatened ally. |
| ● Athletics control | Trip, Shove, Grapple, and Reposition keep enemies where protection works. |
| ● Pure damage | Damage matters, but it is not the reason to choose Guardian. |
Early Trap Warning
Do not build an indestructible statue. A Guardian who survives while a vulnerable ally gets folded is not doing the job. Early feats should create a protection route, not just a nicer personal AC story.
Level 6-10 Priorities
Mid-level Guardian feats should widen coverage and reduce reaction pain. Enemies start pressuring multiple targets, using movement better, attacking from range, and testing whether your defender package reaches beyond one adjacent square.
| Mid-level direction | Notes |
|---|---|
| ● Hampering Stance and Lock Down | Makes the Guardian a lane-control problem instead of a passive target. |
| ● Energy Interceptor | Excellent when elemental blasts, breath weapons, traps, and spell damage show up often. |
| ● Shield from Arrows | Strong against ranged enemies and escort-style fights. |
| ● Group Taunt | Raises Taunt value when multiple enemies threaten multiple allies. |
| ● Mighty Bulwark | Great heavy-armor payoff for Reflex pressure. |
| ● Shield offense | Fun and playable, but only after the protection loop works. |
Level 12-20 Priorities
High-level Guardian feats should answer high-level threat patterns: area damage, ranged pressure, spell pressure, flight, reach, grabs, forced movement, and multi-enemy turns.
| High-level direction | Best use |
|---|---|
| ● Shield from Spells | Campaigns with dangerous casters and magical ranged pressure. |
| ● Blanket Defense | Shield Guardians protecting a clustered party during a deadly round. |
| ● Advanced Taunt upgrades | High-threat enemies that can delete allies if left unchecked. |
| ● Advanced armor mobility | Heavy armor builds that need to move, charge, and hold objectives. |
| ● Devastating Shield Wallop | Good for aggressive shield builds, but still secondary to protection. |
| ● Standing still | High-level enemies love defenders who refuse to adjust. |
Feat Lanes Ranked
Shield Bodyguard ●
This is the cleanest Guardian feat lane. Bodyguard, Reactive Shield, Shielding Taunt, shield protection, shield reaction, and ally-defense feats make the class understandable and effective.
Best users:
- Parties with fragile casters.
- Escort, defense, dungeon, and objective-heavy campaigns.
- Players who enjoy reaction timing.
- Groups that coordinate formation instead of scattering like kicked dice.
Key links: shields and Shield Block, Crafting, armor, and reactions.
Lane-Lock Defender ●
Hampering Stance, Lock Down, reach, Athletics, Reactive Strike-style punishment, Trip, Shove, and Reposition make the Guardian a map problem. This lane is strongest when combat has doors, bridges, wagons, ledges, stairs, civilians, chokepoints, or a back line worth defending.
Best party conditions:
- Tactics that make position matter.
- Allies that capitalize on accuracy and controlled movement.
- Allies that exploit off-guard and stuck enemies.
- Terrain control that makes lane defense nastier.
Taunt Punisher ●
Long-Distance Taunt, Taunting Strike, Proud Nail, Ring Their Bell, Group Taunt, and related options reward enemies for making the wrong target choice. This lane gets better when the GM runs monsters as creatures with goals, not perfect chess engines.
Taunt is not mind control. That matters. The best Taunt feats make both choices bad: attack the Guardian and waste effort, or ignore the Guardian and eat penalties, off-guard pressure, or punishment.
Intercept And Damage-Type Expansion ●
Intercept Attack starts with physical damage protection. Feats such as Energy Interceptor, Area Armor, Shield from Arrows, Shield from Spells, and Blanket Defense expand when and how you can protect allies.
Move this lane up if the campaign includes:
- Dragons, elementals, breath weapons, and area blasts.
- Archers, siege weapons, firearm lines, or Guns & Gears threats.
- Dangerous spellcasters.
- Escort missions or war scenes.
- Allies who stay near you long enough to be protected.
Heavy Armor Juggernaut ●
Larger than Life, Mighty Bulwark, Sure-Footed, Juggernaut Charge, Scattering Charge, and armor-forward picks make the Guardian feel like the wall learned to sprint.
This lane is best when physical terrain and objective holding matter. It is weaker when enemies fly, teleport, target mental effects, or fight at range while you slowly explain how heavy your armor is.
Shield Offense ●
Shield Warfare, Shield Wallop, and Devastating Shield Wallop are fun, but they should not replace the defender role. Take them when you already have a working shield protection plan and want offense layered on top.
Shield offense comes after a working protection plan.
Reaction Budget
Guardian is reaction-hungry. Before taking a feat, ask which reaction wins when several triggers happen at once.
| Reaction pressure | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Ally takes a major physical hit | Intercept Attack usually wins. |
| You take a large hit and shield is raised | Shield Block may win if it prevents more damage. |
| Enemy tries to move past you | Lockdown or Reactive Strike-style control can be better than blocking later. |
| Enemy casts or attacks at range | Shield from Spells, Shield from Arrows, or movement pressure may matter. |
| Several allies are threatened | Group Taunt, positioning, and Blanket Defense-style turns rise. |
If a feat adds another reaction without clarifying when it beats your existing reactions, rate it lower.
Skill, General, And Equipment Support
| Support layer | Guardian use |
|---|---|
| ● Athletics | Trip, Shove, Grapple, Reposition, climb, swim, and lane control. |
| ● Medicine | You absorb damage intentionally. Recovery is not optional. |
| ● Crafting | Repair shields, maintain gear, and support armor-heavy play. |
| ● Intimidation | Fits Taunt and gives useful third-action pressure. |
| ● Survival | Strong in marches, watches, war campaigns, and wilderness defense. |
| ● General feats | Toughness, Fleet-style mobility, Shield Block access, save patches, and recovery support all matter. |
Equipment priorities: current armor runes, current shield plan, backup shield, weapon runes, Athletics boosters, healing consumables, resistance consumables, and mobility items. Use runes, magic items by level, consumables, and treasure by level.
GM And Monster Pressure
GM Core makes Guardian feats better when encounters include terrain, objectives, civilians, narrow lanes, hazards, ranged enemies, spellcasters, and consequences for letting the back line get hit. Empty-room slugfests still let Guardian work, but they remove many of the decisions that make the class interesting.
Monster Core changes feat value by enemy behavior:
| Enemy pressure | Better Guardian feats |
|---|---|
| Single melee brute | Taunt, Intercept Attack, shield defense, Athletics control. |
| Many attackers | Group Taunt, lane control, area protection, chokepoint play. |
| Archers and siege threats | Shield from Arrows, cover, movement, Long-Distance Taunt. |
| Spellcasters | Shield from Spells, Energy Interceptor, Will defense, movement pressure. |
| Flyers | Ranged backup, Long-Distance Taunt, mobility items, ally coordination. |
| Area damage | Area Armor, Blanket Defense, careful spacing, and not making the party a blast template. |
Common Mistakes
- Taking only personal defense and giving enemies no reason to care.
- Forgetting that Intercept Attack needs positioning.
- Taking too many reaction feats and not knowing which one wins.
- Ignoring shield repair and backup shields.
- Building for corridors in a campaign of open fields, or vice versa.
- Trying to out-damage a dedicated striker instead of protecting the party's good turn.
Hot Take: Guardian is not a tank in the video-game sense. Its best feats make an enemy's best target choice feel costly and inconvenient.
