The short answer

Lizardfolk, also called iruxi, are an uncommon Medium PF2e Remastered ancestry from Player Core 2 with 8 Hit Points, 25-foot Speed, Strength, Wisdom, and free boosts, an Intelligence flaw, agile finesse claws, and Breath Control. Frilled Lizardfolk supports intimidation, Wetlander adds a swim Speed, Cliffscale improves climbing, and Woodstalker rewards forest or jungle maps. Pick a heritage that matches the campaign terrain, then build around Strength, Wisdom, natural weapons, terrain control, or wilderness skills.

Introduction

Lizardfolk, or iruxis, are Player Core 2's ancient, patient, terrain-adapted reptilian ancestry. They are communal, tradition-heavy, tied to oral history and ancestral bones, and very comfortable letting the map do half the fighting. Mechanically, they get Strength, Wisdom, claws, Breath Control, and heritages that care about cliffs, forests, wetlands, deserts, stealth, intimidation, and falling from terrible places without making it everyone else's problem.

Three Lizardfolk use a river route, a mossy ruin, and coordinated signals to move safely through mangrove wetlands.

Lizardfolk is a map ancestry. Water, cover, difficult terrain, climbing routes, heat, ambush positions, and forced movement all matter. Monster Core reinforces that with defenders, scouts, and stargazers who use swimming, Survival, Nature, terrain advantage, shields, stealth, primal magic, and patient defense of the community.

Iruxi Culture And Table Identity

Player Core 2 frames iruxis as patient, ancient, communal, and deeply tied to oral tradition, astrology, ancestor worship, and druidic rites. Their settlements are often partially submerged or overlooked, with ancestral bones built into community spaces as spiritual guardians. Their religion is practical and local, often focused on animism, ancestors, Gozreh, and reading the future through stars and signs.

That is excellent character fuel. A Lizardfolk Ranger can be a patrol hunter reporting threats to the enclave. A Druid or Animist can speak for land, water, and ancestors. A Fighter can be a settlement defender. A Cleric or Oracle can be an astrologer interpreting what the bones and stars refuse to say politely.

Monster Core adds a useful warning: iruxis can be misread as cold or aggressive because they do not emote the same way many other peoples do, but many are interested in stories, trade, equipment, and alliances. That is a better hook than "I am detached." The better version is "I am patient, observant, and very aware that your city was built yesterday by historical standards."

Heritage Rankings

HeritageBest forWhy it works
Frilled Lizardfolk ●Intimidation, melee, frontlinersVisual Demoralize, no language penalty, and Threatening Approach make fear part of your movement plan.
Wetlander Lizardfolk ●Water maps, scouts, Rangers, defendersA 15-foot swim Speed stacks perfectly with Breath Control and Terrain Advantage later.
Cliffscale Lizardfolk ●Climbers, vertical maps, ambushersHands-free climbing and success-to-critical-success Climb checks are excellent in the right terrain.
Woodstalker Lizardfolk ●Forest and jungle campaignsCover in forest/jungle plus Terrain Stalker for underbrush can make wilderness maps yours.
Unseen Lizardfolk ●Stealth, scouts, ambush buildsSkin-color blending is strong where terrain colors match and the campaign rewards Sneak play.
Sandstrider Lizardfolk ●Desert, heat, survival campaignsFire resistance, heat tolerance, and starvation/thirst endurance are excellent, but cold vulnerability matters.
Cloudleaper Lizardfolk ●Cliffs, aerial hazards, vertical campaignsFall protection is useful, but it needs room and GM agreement.

Heritage Notes

Frilled Lizardfolk

Frilled is the best general combat heritage because it makes Demoralize more reliable across languages and gives Threatening Approach. Striding adjacent and Demoralizing in the same two-action package is very practical. On a success, frightened 2 is real pressure.

Best classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Champion, Guardian, Ranger, and any martial investing in Intimidation.

Wetlander Lizardfolk

Wetlander is simple and strong whenever water matters. Breath Control already helps you hold your breath; adding a swim Speed turns that into real mobility. It also makes Terrain Advantage better at 9th level because enemies in water without swim Speeds can become off-guard to you.

Cliffscale Lizardfolk

Cliffscale is the best vertical-map heritage. Combat Climber, hands-free climbing without footwear, and success-to-critical-success Climb checks make walls, cliffs, ruins, trees, and ledges into usable battlefield lanes. Gecko's Grip later can improve this even further by giving a climb Speed if you already have the heritage.

Woodstalker Lizardfolk

Woodstalker is excellent in forest and jungle campaigns. Always being able to Take Cover in those terrains, plus Terrain Stalker for underbrush, makes you hard to pin down. Pair it with Stealth, Survival, and the stealth in combat guide.

Unseen Lizardfolk

Unseen is the stealth heritage. The bonus requires coloration roughly matching your surroundings, so it is not universal invisibility, but it is excellent in the right region. The single-action minor change is practical enough to use in play, which matters.

Sandstrider Lizardfolk

Sandstrider is a desert campaign all-star. Fire resistance, reduced heat severity, and much longer starvation/thirst tolerance are all valuable. The downside is explicit: environmental cold is worse for you unless you use gear or shelter. In the desert, that is a fair trade. In an arctic campaign, it is a comedy of poor decisions.

Cloudleaper Lizardfolk

Cloudleaper gives fall protection when you can act and have room to use your gliding skin. It is good in cliff, bridge, tower, airship, jungle canopy, or flying-enemy campaigns. It is less exciting in waist-high dungeon corridors.

Ancestry Feat Rankings

FeatLevelBest forWhy it matters
Terrain Advantage ●9Everyone using terrainEnemies in difficult terrain are off-guard to you, and water expands that if you have a swim Speed. This is the ancestry's tactical thesis.
Bone Magic ●1Casters, utility builds, ancestor conceptsAt-will primal or occult cantrip gives real utility and unlocks later bone-magic feats.
Iruxi Armaments ●1Natural weapon buildsBetter claws, fangs, or tail give you serious unarmed options and later feat paths.
Lizardfolk Lore ●1Scouts, stargazers, survivalistsSurvival plus Nature or Occultism, plus Astrology or Lizardfolk Lore, fits the culture and mechanics.
Reptile Speaker ●1Wilderness, scouts, diplomatsSpeaking with reptile animals can matter a lot in the right ecosystems.
Gecko's Grip ●5Climbers, Cliffscale buildsExcellent climbing improvement, and Cliffscale turns it into a climb Speed.
Swift Swimmer ●5Water buildsGives a swim Speed or improves Wetlander to 25 feet. Very good with Terrain Advantage.
Bone Investiture ●13Bone Magic buildsDaily dinosaur form as an innate spell is strong, loud, and hard to misinterpret.
Primal Rampage ●13Mobile defenders, terrain martialsDaily unfettered movement and mountain resilience, with a combined casting option, is strong utility.
Scion Transformation ●17High-level martialsPermanent enlarge and extra max HP equal to level is a major capstone identity shift.
Marsh Runner ●1Wetlander and swamp campaignsBetter Step and Balance in marshy conditions is excellent but terrain-specific.
Parthenogenic Hatchling ●1Survival campaigns, disease-heavy gamesDisease protection and starvation/thirst endurance are useful, but it is 1st-level-only and narrow.
Envenom Fangs ●5Fangs buildsPersistent poison once per hour is good if your fangs hit and poison works.
Flexible Tail ●5Utility charactersSimple Interact actions with your tail are convenient, but not full extra hands.
Shed Tail ●5Tail builds, anti-grab toolsEscaping grabbed and Striding away is excellent, but tail downtime is a real cost.
Dangle ●9Climbers, archers, weird tactical mapsHanging by your tail while using both hands is very map-dependent and very funny when it works.
Hone Claws ●9Claw buildsExtra bleed on the next claw hit is useful, but limited to claws and once per hour.
Iruxi Spirit Strike ●13Natural weapon usersGhost touch on ancestry unarmed attacks is good in undead and spirit-heavy games.
Fossil Rider ●17Bone Magic fear buildsDaily mask of terror is dramatic and useful, but the prerequisite path is specific.

Best Class Fits

ClassWhy it fits
Ranger ●Strength/Wisdom, Survival, terrain, swimming, scouting, and ambush play all align.
Druid ●Wisdom, Nature, Gozreh/druidic rites, primal magic, and water/wilderness themes are perfect.
Fighter ●Strength, shields, weapons, claws, fangs, tail, and terrain control make Fighter very reliable.
Barbarian ●Strength, intimidation, natural weapons, and ancient predator energy fit well.
Champion ●Durable protector themes fit settlement defenders and ancestor guardians.
Guardian ●Protecting the community, holding terrain, and refusing movement pressure are all on-theme.
Monk ●Wisdom plus natural-weapon flavor and mobility make a strong unarmed concept.
Cleric ●Wisdom, Gozreh, ancestors, and local religion fit, though Strength may be secondary.
Animist ●Ancestor spirits, animism, and Wisdom make this one of the best story fits.
Rogue ●Unseen, Woodstalker, Terrain Advantage, Stealth, and claws can support a patient ambusher.

Class Pairing Notes

Ranger

Ranger is the cleanest Lizardfolk class. Player Core 2 calls out iruxis as outstanding rangers, and the mechanics agree: Strength, Wisdom, Survival, Nature, Stealth, swim options, climbing options, and Terrain Advantage all support the class. Wetlander, Woodstalker, Unseen, and Cliffscale are especially good.

Druid And Animist

Druid is the obvious primal fit, especially with Gozreh, water, storms, wetlands, and druidic rites. Animist is the deeper ancestry-spirit fit, tying ancestral bones, local spirits, animism, and practical religion into the class chassis.

Use the primal spell guide, Druid spell guide, and focus spell guide if you go this route.

Fighter, Champion, And Guardian

Monster Core's defender material makes this easy: shields, javelins, jaws, tail, terrain, and patient defense of the settlement. Fighter gives the cleanest weapon math. Champion gives sacred protection. Guardian turns "protect the young and the walls" into a class role.

Barbarian And Monk

Barbarian likes Strength, Frilled intimidation, and natural weapon flavor. Monk likes Wisdom, mobility, and unarmed identity. Both work, but do not assume the claws alone carry the whole build. Invest in the class engine first.

Cleric And Oracle

Cleric and Oracle are strong for ancestor rites, astrology, Gozreh, water, stars, and prophecy. The Wisdom boost strongly supports Cleric. Oracle is more concept-driven, but iruxi stargazer flavor is right there waiting to be used.

Best Skills

SkillWhy
Athletics ●Strength, climbing, swimming, forced movement, and natural weapon builds all use it.
Survival ●Lizardfolk Lore, Ranger concepts, tracking, waterlands, and wilderness patrols all fit.
Nature ●Druidic rites, Gozreh, Reptile Speaker, and primal ecology make this core.
Intimidation ●Frilled Lizardfolk and Threatening Approach reward investment.
Stealth ●Unseen, Woodstalker, scouts, and ambush play all support stealth.
Acrobatics ●Marsh Runner, Balance, mobility, and difficult terrain make it useful.
Diplomacy ●Reptile Speaker and alliance-building support it, and Monster Core notes iruxis can trade stories and alliances.
Religion ●Ancestor worship, Gozreh, Desna, astrology, and settlement rites can matter.
Medicine ●Wisdom makes it practical for field support.
Occultism ●Bone Magic can be occult, but the Intelligence flaw means you need to build for it.

Best Equipment

GearBest usersNotes
WeaponsFighters, Rangers, BarbariansFlails, javelins, spears, staves, and natural-weapon backup all fit iruxi tactics.
Ranged weaponsScouts and defendersJavelins, blowguns, and thrown/ranged options fit Monster Core iruxi scouts and defenders.
ShieldsDefenders, Champions, GuardiansLizardfolk defenders use shields well, and shield play fits settlement protection.
ArmorFrontlinersUse armor that matches your class and environment. Flavor can be bone, stone, glass, or treated materials.
RunesWeapon and armor usersNatural weapons are fun, but item math still matters for carried weapons and armor.
Adventuring gearScouts, swimmers, climbersWaterproof storage, rope, climbing gear, healer's tools, and survival gear make the ancestry feel real.
Alchemical itemsScouts, poison conceptsBlowgun poison and wetland hunting concepts fit, but check access and class support.
Breath and water gearWetlanders and aquatic partiesBreath Control helps, but allies may still need support. Being fine underwater alone is how scouting becomes a rescue mission.

GM Core And Monster Core Notes

Lizardfolk needs terrain. Wetlands, rivers, coasts, jungles, cliffs, ruins, submerged settlements, difficult terrain, and heat all give iruxi decisions teeth. Use the GM environment guide, hazards guide, and movement actions guide to make those choices matter.

Monster Core gives strong NPC context. Lizardfolk defenders protect the young and settlements, often using shields and terrain. Scouts patrol, track intruders, report weaknesses, use stealth, and exploit Terrain Advantage. Stargazers are respected wise figures with primal magic, Survival, Nature, and astrological authority. Those are not player build requirements, but they show what the ancestry is built to care about: community, territory, patience, water, ancestors, and the long view.

For social play, remember that iruxis may be misunderstood because their emotional signals differ from those of other humanoids. That can create good social encounters, but do not reduce it to "emotionless reptile." The better angle is cross-cultural communication: they feel plenty, they just do not always broadcast it in ways impatient people understand.

Common Mistakes

MistakeBetter approach
Picking a terrain heritage for the wrong campaignMatch Cliffscale, Wetlander, Woodstalker, Sandstrider, Cloudleaper, or Unseen to maps that will appear.
Ignoring the Intelligence flawPlan skill-heavy, Occultism, Crafting, and lore builds carefully.
Treating claws as a full build by defaultUse Iruxi Armaments, class support, or weapons if you want natural attacks to carry combat.
Forgetting Breath ControlSmoke, water, gas, drowning, and suffocation scenes can all matter.
Taking Terrain Advantage without making terrain happenUse spells, positioning, water, hazards, chokepoints, and teamwork to create the off-guard condition.
Playing iruxi as cold because they are reptilesUse patience, tradition, duty, and unfamiliar expression instead.

Hot Take

Lizardfolk shines when the map is part of the rules. If every fight happens in a dry square room, the ancestry is still fine, but someone owes the iruxi an apology. Terrain Advantage is the ancestry's thesis statement: if your build cannot make difficult terrain or water matter, it leaves one of the best iruxi tools in the reeds.

Frilled is the best all-purpose heritage because fear does not care whether the dungeon has a conveniently placed cliff. Wetlander is better than it looks because a swim Speed changes encounter geometry. Enemies see water as a problem. You see a hallway.

Bone Magic can make ancestry, ancestor worship, astrology, and spellcasting feel like one tradition instead of separate character-sheet boxes. Lizardfolk gear should look practical, old, and weatherproof. If a swamp defender's whole kit rusts after one patrol, that is procurement failure.

Final Verdict

Lizardfolk is an A-tier ancestry for players who like terrain, patience, and practical strength. It supports martials, Rangers, Druids, defenders, scouts, swimmers, climbers, intimidation builds, natural weapon builds, and ancestor-magic concepts. The Strength and Wisdom boosts are excellent. The Intelligence flaw is real, but manageable.

Pick Frilled if you want the strongest broad combat heritage. Pick Wetlander if water matters. Pick Cliffscale if vertical maps matter. Pick Woodstalker if forests and jungles matter. Pick Unseen for stealth. Pick Sandstrider for heat and deserts. Pick Cloudleaper for fall-heavy, vertical, or aerial campaigns.

The best Lizardfolk characters do not rush. They read the map, read the stars, remember what happened last time, and then make the battlefield unpleasant for everyone who did not study history.
