Introduction

The Theurge is uniquely good at reading spell lists because it does not approach them through one source. It prepares from Arcane and Divine at the same time. That means Shield, Bless, Fireball, Spirit Guardians, Wall of Force, Heal, Wish, and Mass Heal can all belong to the same prepared-list ecosystem.

Player's Guide 2 widens that ecosystem with luck manipulation, distance tricks, psychic defenses, smites, Divine auras, and high-circle spells that look like a cosmic rules-lawyer wrote them during a thunderstorm.

The important boundary is source access. If a spell is Arcane or Divine in these books, it is treated here as a direct Theurge option. If it is Primordial-only or Wyrd-only, it goes in the Sacred Learning section unless another build feature grants it. That distinction matters because Sacred Learning is one spell per day, not a second full spell list.

Tales of the Valiant Best Theurge Spells

How to Use This Guide

Ratings are for the Theurge specifically, accounting for dual Arcane/Divine preparation, Dual Focus, and additions from Player's Guide 2, The Old Margeve, and Labyrinth Worldbook.

  • ● Red - Bad. Skip it.
  • ● Orange - Situational. Prepare it when the day calls for it.
  • ● Green - Good. Worth regular preparation.
  • ● Blue - Excellent. One of the best picks at its circle.

Cantrips

Guidance ● - The best noncombat cantrip. Adding 1d4 to ability checks all day is exactly the kind of quiet value a Theurge should provide.

Sacred Flame ● - Reliable Divine radiant damage on a DEX save. Keep this when radiant damage and save-based targeting matter.

Fire Bolt ● - The Arcane long-range damage default. Better when you need reach and attack-roll scaling.

Mage Hand ● - Universal exploration utility. If the party lacks an Arcane caster, the Theurge should usually cover this.

Minor Illusion ● - Distraction, cover stories, ambush setup, and social misdirection in one cantrip.

Thaumaturgy ● - Good table presence and social flavor, but less broadly useful than Guidance, Mage Hand, or Minor Illusion.

Luck Bait (Player's Guide 2) ● - Arcane and Divine access. A tiny +1 after an ally misses an attack or save by 1 is not glamorous, but it turns "almost" into "yes" at cantrip cost. The joke is that the smallest number at the table is sometimes the loudest one.

Invigorate (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine temporary HP for a wounded ally. It is not a replacement for real healing, but it is good triage when you want your action free for something meaner next round.

Measure (Player's Guide 2) ● - Arcane and Divine utility for dimensions and weight. Great for heists, engineering problems, and the kind of player who asks whether the statue can fit through the window.

Hobble (The Old Margeve) ● - A bonus-action Arcane cantrip that slows a target. Theurge likes this because it can interfere with enemy positioning while preserving the action for a leveled spell, weapon attack, or class feature.

Hamstring (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane ranged damage with reaction denial. Not a primary damage plan, but reaction denial is real tactical value when allies need to disengage, move through a threatened lane, or stop a counterpunch.

Word of Misfortune (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - The best Labyrinth cantrip for most Theurges. Psychic pressure plus disadvantage support gives you a cantrip that remains useful when a spell slot is not worth spending.

Crushing Curse (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Psychic damage plus deafening. This is weaker than Word of Misfortune in most fights, but deafening matters against sound-based monsters, verbal tactics, and some stealth setups.

Doorbind (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane and Divine access. It is not flashy, but sealing a door, hatch, lid, or gate can decide chases and retreats. Better in dungeon and heist campaigns than wilderness crawls.

Swift Stash (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane pocket-object utility. This is a campaign-style spell: excellent for intrigue, prison breaks, rituals, smuggling, and "hide the focus before the guards search us" scenes.

Crimson Forge (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Makes blood-forged weapons or tools. The image is strong, but most Theurges do not need emergency gear often enough to prioritize it over control or utility cantrips.

Corrosion (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Object sabotage. Useful on locks, bars, hinges, and bindings, but table-dependent and slow enough that it is usually a problem-solving cantrip, not a combat pick.

Influence (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Temporary social advantage can be good, but a Theurge already has broad magic and skills for social pressure. Prepare around it only if your campaign makes cantrip-level social leverage matter.

Tree Heal (The Old Margeve) ● - Divine cantrip that heals plants. Great flavor for Margreve-specific play, but too narrow unless plant creatures, living forests, or botanical objectives are regular table business.

1st Circle Spells

Shield ● - The defensive reaction that keeps a concentration caster alive. Arbiter or Invoker, you want this prepared.

Mage Armor ● - If your build is unarmored, this is the daily AC foundation. Skip only when armor proficiency already solves AC.

Bless ● - One of the best 1st-circle concentration spells in the game. Dual Focus makes it even better once you can pair it with Arcane control.

Healing Word ● - Bonus-action ranged recovery. This is the spell that picks up a dying ally without spending your action.

Cure Wounds ● - Stronger single-target healing than Healing Word, but touch range and action cost keep it behind the bonus-action option.

Command ● - One-word control with no concentration. Drop, flee, grovel, and halt all create useful openings.

Guiding Bolt ● - Radiant damage plus advantage for the next attacker. Good when the party can focus fire.

Sleep ● - Excellent at low levels, weaker later. Prepare early, retire as enemy HP climbs.

Detect Magic / Comprehend Languages / Identify ● - Ritual and investigation staples. The exact value depends on your table's ritual rules, but the Theurge should not ignore them.

Agonizing Mark (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane mark-and-pain pressure. It is best in a party that can focus fire one target and exploit the mark repeatedly. If the fight is scattered, it drops to orange.

Feed the Forest (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane, Divine, Primordial, and Wyrd access, but its payoff is tied to the Margreve Forest's spell-siphoning environment. Essential there, nearly blank elsewhere.

Step Like Me (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane track deception. This is a great spy, fugitive, or bounty-hunter spell, but it does not belong in everyday combat prep unless the campaign is built around pursuit and misdirection.

Bleed (The Old Margeve) ● - Divine weapon-rider damage. Theurge can use it, but the class normally has better things to do than spend a prepared spell on modest weapon pressure.

Eclipse Sight (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Reaction-style defensive blindness is exactly the kind of small, sharp tool a Theurge wants. It protects you without asking you to spend a whole turn on defense.

Delay Passing (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Corpse-question utility. It is not a combat spell, but it is a strong investigation prep when the adventure involves murder scenes, battlefields, missing NPCs, or dead witnesses.

Fling (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Object-hurling Arcane utility and damage. The value scales with player creativity and terrain. It is a good prepared spell when the GM rewards physical problem solving.

Truth of the Void (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane and Divine fear control. Theurge likes it because fear can buy space for your concentration package, but it competes with strong 1st-circle defaults.

Ruminate (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Distraction and daydreaming. It is flavorful social and control utility, but too soft to be a default combat prep.

Pernicious Radiance (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine focus-fire setup. Better for parties with many attack rolls than for a caster-heavy party.

Sapping Smite (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine weapon rider. It is playable on an Arbiter or weapon-forward Theurge, but most full-caster Theurges should not spend many preps on smite spells.

Feed the Worms (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane and Divine corpse magic. It can create grim battlefield leverage, but it is too situational for a normal prepared list unless the campaign leans necromantic.

Distance Dilation (Player's Guide 2) ● - Arcane illusion that scrambles a creature's sense of distance. It is a low-circle control pick for fights built around movement, range, and "no, you do not quite reach the wizard."

Stumble (Player's Guide 2) ● - Arcane reaction control that slows a moving creature and can knock it prone on a bad save. Theurge likes cheap interruption because Dual Focus wants you alive and not currently being introduced to a greataxe.

Guiding Counsel (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine skill support that adds WIS to an ability check. This is excellent for investigation days, social pressure, and any plan where the rogue mutters "I have this" in a tone that means they might not.

Infernal Shield (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine protection with infernal flavor. Good when the expected damage pattern matches it; less important than Shield, Bless, or Healing Word as a default prep.

2nd Circle Spells

Hold ● - Paralyzes a Medium creature and turns melee allies into critical-hit machines. One of the strongest early control spells.

Aid ● - Raises current and maximum HP for three allies for 8 hours. Excellent adventuring-day durability.

Spiritual Weapon ● - Bonus-action force pressure that does not require concentration. Good when your action is already spoken for.

Blindness/Deafness ● - No-concentration debuff. Blinded is the real mode; deafened is the niche mode.

Mirror Image ● - No-concentration self-defense. Strong for a Theurge who expects enemies to reach the back line.

Misty Step ● - Bonus-action escape and repositioning. The more your table pressures casters, the more mandatory this becomes.

Silence ● - Anti-caster control and stealth support. Best when paired with grapples, doors, or chokepoints.

Suggestion ● - Social and tactical control. Strong, but it asks for GM-facing judgment.

Mark Prey (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane tracking and attack-advantage magic. This is the best Old Margeve combat-pursuit spell for Theurge because it helps both the chase and the kill.

Spy My Shadow (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane and Wyrd shadow scouting. This is the standout Theurge utility pickup from The Old Margeve: infiltration, room checks, surveillance, and ambush planning without risking your body.

Nip at the Heels (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane illusion pressure from phantom hounds. Good when you need to tax movement or force awkward positioning, weaker against enemies that do not care about ground movement.

Bleating Call (The Old Margeve) ● - Lure and ambush setup. Stronger before initiative than during initiative.

Glitter Dust (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane anti-invisibility and blind pressure. This is a real prepared spell because it answers hidden enemies and creates advantage windows for the party.

Protection from the Void (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane protection against necrotic and psychic pressure. Excellent when the enemy theme is undead, void, aberrant, dream, or psychic horror.

Misdirect (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane movement disruption. Theurge can turn enemy movement into a liability, especially when your party is already using zones, hazards, or chokepoints.

Dream Lance (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane mental assault. Good single-target debilitation, especially if your table rewards non-damage riders over raw blasting.

Maddening Whispers (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane incapacitation pressure. It is worth preparing against low-WIS or low-mental-discipline foes, but watch immunity and condition resistance.

Destructive Resonance (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane psychic assault with tactical disruption. A good mid-circle control-damage hybrid.

Magnetize (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane metal manipulation. It can be amazing in armories, prisons, workshops, and construct-heavy adventures; it can also sit dead in your prep all day.

Corrupting Sheath (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane retaliation damage. Better on a melee Theurge than a backline support Theurge.

Baleful Injunction (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine damage reflection. Prepare when enemies are likely to hit hard and repeatedly; skip when the day is unclear.

Feather Guard (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine lift-out-of-danger defense. Useful in vertical fights and against melee swarms, but not a default prep.

Luminous Smite (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine smite that helps the party hit. Strong on weapon Theurge builds, mediocre on pure caster builds.

Vengeful Smite (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine psychic smite with fear pressure. Same warning: good if you actually attack with weapons, otherwise leave it to Paladin-style builds.

Psychic Block (Player's Guide 2) ● - Arcane and Divine defense that makes a target struggle to find or attack you. This is one of the best PG2 Theurge pickups because it protects concentration without asking you to abandon your control plan.

Orbital Spheres (Player's Guide 2) ● - Arcane and Divine force spheres that deal damage and block attacks. It is defense and offense in one spell, which is exactly how Theurge justifies crowded preparation slots.

Eldritch Smite (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine force smite that makes the target easier to hit. Weapon Theurges can use it; most full-caster Theurges should let the actual weapon people enjoy the weapon candy.

Shadow Guardians (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine shadow cover that hides you and imposes attack pressure on foes. Strong when you need protection and party positioning more than raw damage.

3rd Circle Spells

Counterspell ● - If enemy casters exist, prepare it. Theurge can heal, control, and still be the party's spell denial.

Fireball ● - The benchmark Arcane area damage spell. Theurge does not stop being a healer by preparing a real blast.

Hypnotic Pattern ● - Encounter-winning crowd control. Dual Focus later lets this coexist with Divine concentration plans.

Spirit Guardians ● - The defining Divine damage aura. Best on Theurges who can survive near the fight.

Dispel Magic ● - Ends problems no weapon can solve. Prepare it in any magic-heavy adventure.

Revivify ● - The emergency resurrection spell. Someone should have it; Theurge is one of the best candidates.

Haste ● - Powerful martial ally buff. Competes with Hypnotic Pattern and Spirit Guardians for concentration, but the upside is real.

Beacon of Hope ● - WIS-save and healing amplifier. Prepare when survival, fear, and healing throughput matter more than damage.

Tracer (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane, Divine, Primordial, and Wyrd tracking beacon. This is one of the cleanest expansion spells for Theurge because it solves the "they got away" problem from either source list.

Blood Offering (The Old Margeve) ● - Divine and Wyrd corpse-based self-healing. Morally grim and scene-dependent, but strong in brutal campaigns where bodies are present and survival matters.

Cynophobia (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane anti-canid fear curse. Excellent in wolf, hound, or Pack Master parties; too specific otherwise.

Minor Maze (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane temporary removal. Theurge loves this because it buys the party time without needing to kill the target immediately.

Pocket Portal (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane short-range portal play. This is one of the most distinctive Labyrinth spells for tactical Theurge builds: reposition allies, bypass barriers, break grapples, and create strange lines of attack.

Star's Radiance (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane and Divine aura support for WIS saves. Prepare it when charm, fear, compulsion, dream, or psychic enemies are likely.

Golden Bull (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine defensive pressure against approaching enemies. Good if your Theurge stands near the front line or protects a backline cluster.

Forceful Courser (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine summon-style trampling pressure. A useful opener when you want impact without committing your whole turn plan to a long control spell.

Void Strike (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane darkness bolts. Solid direct offense, especially in void-themed campaigns, but not as unique as Minor Maze or Pocket Portal.

Virulent Nightmare (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane nightmare control that can turn a target's attacks sideways. Good against dangerous single attackers.

Conjure Ferryman (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane travel utility across water. Great when needed, dead when not.

Column of Cogs (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane mobility and positioning. Fun, but often less reliable than Pocket Portal.

Venomous Smite (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine poison smite. Poison is a rough damage type to build around, and Theurge usually has better 3rd-circle options.

Aura of Bane (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine aura that imposes a d4 penalty on enemy rolls. It is not subtle, but neither is carrying two spell traditions and asking enemies to fill out paperwork before succeeding.

Necrotic Pustules (Player's Guide 2) ● - Arcane disease pressure with contagious positioning implications. Best when enemies cluster or when the table enjoys consequences that move around the map.

Abjuring Smite (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine/Wyrd smite that punishes extraplanar creatures. This is a real Arbiter pick in fiend, fey, celestial, or planar campaigns; it is orange because not every Theurge should be swinging a weapon.

4th and 5th Circle Spells

Banishment ● - Clean single-target removal, and sometimes permanent removal against non-native creatures.

Greater Invisibility ● - Offense and defense in one concentration spell. Excellent on yourself or a high-damage ally.

Polymorph ● - Healing, control, mobility, and brute-force offense depending on the target and form.

Greater Hold ● - The upgraded Hold. No creature-type restriction means the critical-hit setup stays relevant.

Wall of Force ● - Encounter division at its cleanest. One of the best reasons to be an Arcane-access caster.

Mass Cure Wounds ● - Party recovery when multiple allies are hurt. Not as efficient as preventing damage, but sometimes the fight has already gone wrong.

Death Ward ● - Long-duration insurance against lethal spikes. Good on the frontliner or on yourself before a boss fight.

Flame Strike ● - Divine burst that splits fire and radiant. Useful when Fireball's fire profile is poor.

Heart-Seeking Arrow (The Old Margeve) ● - Divine ranged-weapon burst. This is a real pickup for weapon Theurges or parties where the Theurge sometimes fights as a ranged finisher.

Harry (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane long-form terror and pursuit pressure. Better in an adventure arc than in a single room fight.

Harrying Hounds (The Old Margeve) ● - Arcane hunting pressure across multiple targets. Strong when fear, pursuit, and travel attrition matter.

Maim (The Old Margeve) ● - Divine and Wyrd necromantic injury. This is mean, campaign-defining magic; check table tone before making it part of your normal plan.

Spectral Wall (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane and Divine wall control with fear pressure. Theurge wants strong concentration pairs, and a wall that shapes the map while threatening enemy morale is a serious tool.

Wield Soul (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane and Divine corpse-power magic. It is dark, but very Theurge: turn death on the field into a temporary resource.

Empty Rain (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane cold and deathly area pressure. Strong in clustered fights and especially good when the party can keep enemies inside the weather.

Flash Freeze (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane freeze control. Good when the encounter is about locking enemies in place rather than deleting one target.

Starbright (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane star-shot offense. Good repeatable pressure, though not as broadly useful as a control spell at the same tier.

Detonate Metal (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane punishment for metal-heavy encounters. Prepare it in armories, battlefields, construct arcs, knightly courts, and dungeon foundries.

Nether Weapon (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane weapon buff with necrotic identity. Best on gish Theurges or when supporting a weapon ally.

Castigation Glyph (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Divine mark-and-punish magic. Solid if your table gives boss fights enough rounds for punishment effects to matter.

Bladed Wings (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane mobility and offense. Good for Theurges who need vertical access before stronger flight options take over.

Amorphous Form (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane transformation into ooze-like utility. Weird and useful in the right infiltration scene, but not a regular combat staple.

Personal Cannibal (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane self-alteration with tradeoffs. The drawback profile makes it a specialty spell, not default prep.

Conjure Minor Voidborn (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane summon option. Useful if your table likes summon management; otherwise it competes with cleaner control.

Create Construct (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane construct servant magic. Campaign-shaping if crafting and downtime matter, less useful in a fast-moving adventure.

Aura of Mercy (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine aura healing over time. This is good in attrition fights where the party can stay grouped and the enemy cannot simply delete one target at a time.

Aura of Order (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine resistance support against magic. Prepare it for caster-heavy arcs, magical duels, and any villain who looks like they own too many candles.

Feathered Flock (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine flight for multiple allies. Theurge already loves flexible answers, and team flight solves cliffs, lava, pits, melee lockdown, and approximately half of all bad ideas.

Lifeblind (Player's Guide 2) ● - Divine/Wyrd necromancy that stops a foe from seeing living creatures. It is narrow but vicious when the party is mostly alive, which is a bold assumption but usually accurate.

6th to 9th Circle Spells

Heal ● (6th) - Large, clean single-target restoration. This is the high-circle healing spell that actually stabilizes a disaster.

Mass Suggestion ● (6th) - Huge-scale influence and combat bypass. Strong when language and reason can apply.

Globe of Invulnerability ● (6th) - Anti-magic shelter against lower-circle spells. Prepare for caster wars.

Divine Word ● (7th) - Bonus-action Divine finisher and extraplanar banishment tool. Better when enemies are already softened.

Forcecage ● (7th) - No-concentration imprisonment. It stacks brutally with your other concentration effects.

Teleport ● (7th) - Campaign mobility. Prepare when location changes are the problem.

Holy Aura ● (8th) - Party-wide defensive power. One of the best Divine high-circle support spells.

Maze ● (8th) - Removes a creature into a demiplane and punishes low-INT enemies.

Power Word Stun ● (8th) - No initial save if the HP threshold is met. Use when you know the target is in range.

Wish ● (9th) - The Arcane ceiling. Replicating any lower-circle spell alone makes it absurd.

Mass Heal ● (9th) - Seven hundred HP of party recovery. This turns a losing endgame fight back on.

Power Word Recover ● (9th) - Full-heal one ally when one creature absolutely must stay standing.

Meteor Swarm / Storm of Vengeance ● (9th) - Massive endgame area pressure. Meteor Swarm is immediate; Storm of Vengeance is slower and more battlefield-shaped.

Life Drain (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane and Divine life-stealing. This is one of the cleanest high-circle direct Theurge expansion spells because it sits exactly between necromancy, survival, and punishment.

Event Horizon (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane gravity control. Big, encounter-warping magic. If the party can exploit forced positioning, this becomes a centerpiece spell.

Greater Maze (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane high-circle removal into a nightmare demiplane. It is exactly the kind of endgame control Theurge wants available.

Void Rift (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane void-area offense. Strong in campaigns using void creatures, planar horror, or clustered enemy formations.

Petrifying Chains (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane petrification pressure. Excellent against enemies with poor saves or limited condition protection.

Glimpse of the Void (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane terror at high circle. Better when fear and mental shock still work at your table's endgame tier.

Unfathomable Emptiness (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane endgame debilitation. Stun and incapacitation language makes it worth reviewing for boss control, but table immunity patterns matter.

Body of Ruin (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane void-body pressure. Stronger if the Theurge expects to stand near enemies; less appealing for pure backline support.

Delay Spell (Player's Guide 2) ● (6th) - Arcane reaction magic that makes an incoming spell take effect later. It is not as clean as "no," but turning "now" into "later" can save a fight when later means after the monster is already on the floor.

Energizing Aegis (Player's Guide 2) ● (6th) - Divine abjuration that turns energy into recovery. Prepare when the enemy's damage type is predictable; skip when the day is mystery soup.

Power Word Petrify (Player's Guide 2) ● (8th) - Arcane and Divine no-nonsense petrification against a wounded target. The spell is blunt, rude, and effective, which is a respectable resume.

Absorb Spell (Player's Guide 2) ● (9th) - Arcane reaction protection that absorbs a spell targeting you and can refill magical fuel. Amazing when enemy casters aim at you; awkward when they aim at literally anyone else.

Wraithblade (Player's Guide 2) ● (9th) - Arcane/Wyrd necrotic blade pressure that lowers maximum HP. This is for weapon-forward or aggressive Arbiters, not the backline Theurge reading the fight from behind three allies and a very judgmental shield.

King of Nothing (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane fading-control magic. Stylish and frightening, but more campaign-piece than default prep.

Prismatic Longbow (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane longbow conjuration. Great image, but only weapon-forward Theurges should spend high-circle prep here.

Conjure Voidborn (Labyrinth Worldbook) ● - Arcane summon option. Stronger at tables that support complex summons and planar ally tactics.

Rituals and Sacred Learning

Theurge normally cares about Arcane and Divine rituals first. If your build has ritual casting access, Portal Jaunt (Player's Guide 2), Read Object (Player's Guide 2), Binding Oath (Player's Guide 2), Hidden Path (Player's Guide 2), Soul Entanglement (Player's Guide 2), Going in Circles (The Old Margeve), Looping Trail (The Old Margeve), Dreamspan (Labyrinth Worldbook), Dreamward (Labyrinth Worldbook), Dream Step (Labyrinth Worldbook), Hidden Path (Labyrinth Worldbook), War Vessel (Labyrinth Worldbook), Sigil in Yellow (Labyrinth Worldbook), Discern Portals and Gates (Labyrinth Worldbook), and Vision Voyage (Labyrinth Worldbook) are the expansion rituals most relevant to review.

For Sacred Learning, look at Primordial-only or Wyrd-only spells only when the day rewards them:

  • Bloodhound, Hunter's Endurance, Illuminate Spoor, Scentless, and Tree Speak (The Old Margeve) - Use these for tracking, wilderness investigations, and forest campaigns.
  • Cure Beast, Instant Snare, Heart-Seeking Arrow, Storm of Wings, Conjure Fey Hound, and Primal Infusion (The Old Margeve) - Use these for companion support, ambushes, ranged martial play, or gish days.
  • Lesser Conjure Animals, Animal Aspect, Veil of Waves, Mutual Doom, and Wraithblade (Player's Guide 2) - Use these when Wyrd or Primordial access from your table, subclass, or daily feature is explicitly available. Do not quietly smuggle them onto the normal Theurge list; the spell police wear robes and take notes.
  • Blend, Seed Bolt, Healing Malediction, Spore Surge, Stir Fury, Structured Mind, Burrow Striker, Snapping Snare, and Yggdrasil Form (Labyrinth Worldbook) - Use these when the scenario calls for camouflage, anti-healing, martial support, mental defense, burrowing, vine lockdown, or plant-form durability.

Best Picks

Best Cantrip: Guidance for utility, Word of Misfortune (Labyrinth Worldbook) for save pressure.

Best Player's Guide 2 Cantrip: Luck Bait. It is tiny, annoying, and excellent.

Best 1st Circle: Shield, Bless, Healing Word, and Eclipse Sight (Labyrinth Worldbook).

Best Player's Guide 2 Low-Circle Spell: Psychic Block, with Distance Dilation and Stumble close behind for control days.

Best 2nd Circle: Hold, Aid, Misty Step, Glitter Dust (Labyrinth Worldbook), and Spy My Shadow (The Old Margeve).

Best 3rd Circle: Counterspell, Fireball, Hypnotic Pattern, Spirit Guardians, and Pocket Portal (Labyrinth Worldbook).

Best 4th or 5th Circle: Banishment, Greater Invisibility, Greater Hold, Wall of Force, and Spectral Wall (Labyrinth Worldbook).

Best High-Circle Spell: Wish, Mass Heal, Forcecage, Maze, Heal, and Greater Maze (Labyrinth Worldbook).

Best Player's Guide 2 High-Circle Spell: Power Word Petrify for closing a wounded boss, Delay Spell for anti-caster weirdness.

Best Sacred Learning Day Spell: Primal Infusion (The Old Margeve) for gish days, Structured Mind (Labyrinth Worldbook) for mental-defense days, or Scentless (The Old Margeve) for pursuit days.

Hot Takes

Hot Take: Theurge gets more from expansion books than any normal single-list caster. A Wizard reads Labyrinth Worldbook as Arcane. A Cleric reads it as Divine. Theurge reads both, then uses Sacred Learning to steal one more answer when the day demands it.

Hot Take: Spy My Shadow (The Old Margeve) is better for Theurge than another damage spell. The class already has damage from its default Arcane and Divine access. What it needs from expansions is weird leverage: scouting, information, movement, and ways to make the party's next room safer before initiative starts.

Hot Take: Pocket Portal (Labyrinth Worldbook) is the spell that separates a creative Theurge from a spreadsheet Theurge. If you only evaluate damage, it looks cute. If you evaluate action economy, line of sight, grapples, barriers, retreats, and ambush geometry, it becomes a real tactical engine.

Hot Take: Luck Bait (Player's Guide 2) is the cantrip version of a GM sighing and saying, "Fine, that hits." It will never look impressive on a character sheet, which is how you know it is about to steal a scene.

Hot Take: Power Word Petrify (Player's Guide 2) is the Theurge's funniest high-circle flex because both Arcane and Divine access can claim it. Your scholarship and your holy authority have reached the same conclusion: that creature should be furniture.

Hot Take: Sacred Learning should not be used as a shopping cart. Pick one expansion spell because you know the day needs it. If you choose a Primordial hunting spell just because it looks cool, you have spent the Theurge's most flexible feature on a vibe.

Final Notes

Theurge has the widest normal preparation range of any ToV caster here: Arcane and Divine are both direct prep, while Primordial-only and Wyrd-only spells remain Sacred Learning choices unless another feature says otherwise. Use the default list for your daily combat shell, then add Player's Guide 2, The Old Margeve, or Labyrinth Worldbook spells when they solve a specific adventure problem better than the staples.
