Best Feats for Rogue in D&D 5e - Ranked

  4. >Best Feats for Rogue in D&D 5e - Ranked

The short answer

Rogues make one meaningful attack per turn, so a 5e 2014 feat only earns its slot if it helps that Sneak Attack land or lands the Rogue somewhere better. Sharpshooter, Mobile, and Alert lead; Crossbow Expert, Fey Touched, Shadow Touched, and Lucky follow. Extra-attack feats add almost nothing.

Rogues are the ultimate precision class. They make one meaningful attack per turn: the Sneak Attack. Every feat choice must either ensure that attack hits, ensures it can be delivered consistently, or expands the Rogue's utility across the table. Feats that add extra attacks or weapon damage bonuses contribute minimally; feats that improve accuracy, positioning, and Sneak Attack delivery contribute maximally.

Disclaimer

This guide uses 2014 D&D Player's Handbook rules and TCoE. This is not a 2024 edition guide.

Rogue Feat Priorities

  1. Dexterity 20 - Every Sneak Attack attack roll and AC depends on it
  2. Alert or Mobile - Positioning and initiative for reliable Sneak Attack
  3. Sharpshooter or Crossbow Expert - Ranged Sneak Attack delivery
  4. Fey Touched / Lucky - Utility and reliability insurance

Top Feats for Rogue

● Sharpshooter

For ranged Rogues (the more common build), Sharpshooter's cover immunity and long-range precision ensure consistent Sneak Attack delivery from advantaged positions. The -5/+10 is best left off for Rogues in high-stakes situations where hitting is more important than bonus damage. Sharpshooter section

● Mobile

Hit a target with Sneak Attack, move freely without opportunity attacks from that target. Next turn, reposition and repeat from a new angle. Mobile enables the most flexible Sneak Attack delivery pattern: attack from any direction, leave without retaliation. Mobile guide

● Alert

Rogues who act first in combat can attack before any enemy takes a turn: before cover is established, before enemies group up, before the caster casts Blur. Alert's +5 initiative gives Assassin Rogues maximum Assassinate rounds and gives all Rogues first-strike positioning. Alert guide

● Crossbow Expert

Removes melee disadvantage for hand crossbows, enabling point-blank Sneak Attack without disadvantage disabling it. Also adds a bonus action hand crossbow attack (a second chance for Sneak Attack if the first misses). Crossbow Expert section

● Fey Touched

+1 Dexterity or Intelligence, free Misty Step (escape from surrounded positions and Cunning Action trade-off), and a 1st-level spell. Silvery Barbs as the enchantment choice is an extraordinarily powerful reaction ability that complements the Rogue's reactive combat style. Fey Touched guide

● Shadow Touched

+1 Dexterity or Intelligence, free Invisibility once per long rest (advantage on the next attack = guaranteed Sneak Attack), and a 1st-level illusion spell. Invisibility for free Sneak Attack advantage every long rest is consistently powerful. Shadow Touched guide

● Lucky

One Sneak Attack reroll per luck point. Three luck points per long rest means three insurance attempts on critical attack rolls. For a class whose entire damage output hinges on one hit per turn, Lucky is an extremely efficient investment. Lucky guide

● Skill Expert

+1 to any ability score, new skill proficiency, and expertise in one skill. For skill-focused Rogues, Skill Expert adds depth to the out-of-combat toolkit: expertise in Perception or Stealth compounds with the Rogue's existing Expertise feature. Skill Expert guide

Feats to Avoid

Great Weapon Master. Rogues do not use heavy weapons or multiple attacks. GWM's power comes from high-frequency melee attacks that Rogues cannot replicate.

Dual Wielder. The off-hand attack gives a second Sneak Attack delivery attempt, but the feat investment is inefficient. Mobile or Crossbow Expert provide better Sneak Attack setup. Dual Wielder section

Sentinel. Rogues are skirmishers, not tanks. Sentinel rewards staying in one place, which is the opposite of the Rogue's hit-and-run identity.

Example Feat Progression

Ranged Rogue (most common):

  • Level 4: Sharpshooter
  • Level 8: Alert (Assassin) or Mobile (other subclasses)
  • Level 12: Shadow Touched or Fey Touched

Melee/Skirmisher Rogue:

  • Level 4: Mobile
  • Level 8: ASI Dexterity or Crossbow Expert
  • Level 12: Alert or Lucky

FAQ

Why is Sneak Attack central to feat choices? Rogues deal damage once per turn: feats must ensure that one attack hits and delivers Sneak Attack.

Should a Rogue take Sharpshooter? Yes for ranged Rogues. Cover immunity and long-range precision enable consistent Sneak Attack delivery.

Is Crossbow Expert good? Yes. It removes melee disadvantage that would otherwise disable Sneak Attack at close range.

Is Skulker useful? Situational. Mobile and Alert are more consistently valuable.

Should a Rogue take Lucky? Yes, after primary feats. Lucky provides the best insurance for a single-attack class.
