Rangers are the ranged martial class in D&D 5e 2014, and their feat priorities split cleanly between two weapon archetypes: the longbow archer and the hand crossbow dual-shooter. Both archetypes want a damage amplifier (Sharpshooter) and a concentration protection feat (War Caster) as their first two picks. After that, the builds diverge: archers add Fighting Initiate for Archery style, and hand crossbow Rangers add Crossbow Expert.
Rangers receive three ASI/feat slots by level 12 and have Dexterity and Wisdom as their primary stats.

- War Caster - Protect Hunter's Mark concentration
- Crossbow Expert or Fighting Initiate - The weapon-specific support feat
- Alert or Fey Touched - Initiative or utility layer
Top Feats for Ranger
● Sharpshooter
The mandatory damage feat for ranged Rangers. -5/+10 on every attack, ignore half and three-quarter cover, no disadvantage at long range. Paired with the Archery fighting style (+2 to ranged attacks), the penalty is partially offset and the damage gain is enormous. Sharpshooter section
● War Caster
Rangers concentrate on Hunter's Mark, Zephyr Strike, and Ensnaring Strike constantly. War Caster protects these concentration spells from the hits Rangers take in melee range. Essential for any Ranger who relies on sustained concentration. War Caster guide
● Crossbow Expert
The hand crossbow combo feat. Removes loading, enables bonus action hand crossbow attacks, and removes melee disadvantage. Combined with Sharpshooter, every attack in the sequence (2 main + 1 bonus) deals +10 damage. Crossbow Expert section
● Alert
Gloom Stalker Rangers have Dread Ambusher, an extra attack on the first round in combat. Going first maximizes Dread Ambusher turns. Alert's +5 initiative ensures the Ranger acts before most enemies in the game. Alert guide
● Fighting Initiate
Rangers choose one fighting style at level 2 from a limited list. Fighting Initiate adds a second from the full Fighter list. A Ranger who took Dueling at level 2 can add Archery (the most important ranged style) via Fighting Initiate. Fighting Initiate section
● Fey Touched
+1 Wisdom (spellcasting reliability), free Misty Step (escape from surrounded positions), and Hunter's Mark via the divination spell slot (free daily cast). Outstanding efficiency for a half-feat. Fey Touched guide
● Resilient (Constitution)
Rangers lack Constitution save proficiency. Hunter's Mark lasting 1 hour requires maintaining concentration for extended periods. Resilient (Con) provides the proficiency bonus to every concentration check. Resilient guide
● Lucky
After primary feats are secured, Lucky provides insurance on attack rolls (Sharpshooter gambles), concentration saves, and other critical d20 rolls. Lucky guide
● Gift of the Gem Dragon (Fizban's)
A Wisdom half-feat improves Ranger spellcasting DC alongside Perception, and Telekinetic Reprisal punishes anything that closes to melee range. Weaker for a Ranger who stays at range, since the reaction only triggers within 10 feet. Gift of the Gem Dragon guide

Great Weapon Master. Rangers are primarily Dexterity-based ranged attackers. GWM requires Strength-based heavy weapons incompatible with the Ranger's primary weapon type.
Mage Slayer. Rangers do not primarily fight in melee range against enemy casters.
Mounted Combatant. Highly situational. Prioritize consistent contributions over campaign-dependent feats. Mounted Combatant section

FAQ
Sharpshooter or Crossbow Expert? Both. Take Sharpshooter first, then CBE for hand crossbow Rangers. Longbow Rangers take Sharpshooter and Fighting Initiate for Archery style.
Is War Caster necessary? Yes. Hunter's Mark is too valuable to lose to a failed concentration save.
Which subclass changes priorities most? Gloom Stalker wants Alert; all other subclasses are more flexible.
Is Fighting Initiate good? Yes. A second fighting style from the full Fighter list is efficient for Rangers who want both Archery and Dueling styles.
Does Fey Touched work well? Yes. Hunter's Mark as the free divination spell, Misty Step as the escape, and Wisdom bump for spellcasting.
