Pick the Right Tool for the Moment
Running a D&D 2024 game means making clear rulings, presenting situations players can act on, and using the right chapter when the table needs help. The 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide covers exploration, social interaction, and combat, then supplies tools for NPCs, magic items, hazards, encounters, adventures, campaigns, treasure, cosmology, and Bastions.
This hub connects DM-facing rules and advice to the rest of the D&D 2024 library: class guides for what your players can do, species guides and backgrounds for what they're built from, feat guides for their build options, spell guides for what casters can throw at your encounters, and the Weapon Mastery guide for the martial-side rules your NPCs and monsters can use too.
For a sourcebook built around magical factions, evolving items, creatures, and high-magic campaign pressure, see the Arcana Unleashed overview.

What a DM Actually Does
The DM describes a situation, lets the players decide what their characters attempt, and resolves the result. The rules and prepared material carry much of that work. When they do not answer a question, the DMG gives you an adjudication process for making a ruling that fits the situation and keeps the game moving.
| Step | Question | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | What kind of encounter is this? | Exploration, social interaction, or combat - the DMG treats each differently. |
| 2 | What do the players need to know? | Give the significant features they can perceive so they can make an informed choice. |
| 3 | What are they trying to do? | Let players state an intent before you call for a roll. |
| 4 | Does this need a D20 Test? | Only if there's a real chance of both success and failure with a meaningful consequence either way. |
| 5 | What happens next? | Resolve the action, then describe the result and move to the next choice. |
Prepare the Next Session
The DMG recommends a campaign journal for notes that need to survive from one session to the next. Before play, use it to identify the immediate situation, the people and places the characters are likely to encounter, and the decisions that could change the campaign. After play, record new NPCs, discoveries, and consequences while they are fresh.
| Prep focus | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Immediate situation | What is happening when the session opens, and what can the characters act on? |
| Likely discoveries | Which clues, locations, NPCs, hazards, or monsters are most likely to matter? |
| Campaign continuity | What did the previous session change, and which consequence should appear next? |

Keep an Encounter Moving
The DMG's narration and outcome guidance supports a simple table rhythm. Use it for a published adventure or your own material, then adjust the pace to the scene.
- Describe the situation. Keep the description short and evocative. Include the significant details characters can perceive, then answer follow-up questions as needed.
- Let the players decide. Ask what their characters attempt. Combat uses Initiative; other scenes can move between players as the situation requires.
- Resolve and describe the result. Some actions simply work, others call for a D20 Test, and social scenes can turn on roleplay and an NPC's attitude.
Calling for a D20 Test
Not every action needs a roll. The DMG's rule of thumb is to call for a check only when there's a real chance of both success and failure, and a meaningful consequence either way. Crossing an empty room or drinking from a flask doesn't need a Dexterity check, and no roll lets an ordinary bow hit the moon.
| Question | How to answer it |
|---|---|
| Is a D20 Test warranted? | Only if failure is possible and matters. |
| What kind of test? | Ability check for an active attempt, attack roll to hit a target, or saving throw to resist an effect. |
| Which ability? | Whichever most influences the character's odds - check for an applicable skill or tool proficiency too. |
| What's the DC? | 10 for easy, 15 for moderately difficult, 20 for hard. |
Multiple DMs
Not every table has one permanent DM. The DMG covers several ways groups share the role: occasional breaks so one DM can recharge, "variety style" play where DMs rotate every session or two on self-contained adventures, concurrent campaigns that run on a schedule, and shared-world setups where two or more DMs divide a setting geographically or thematically and even collaborate as joint DMs on the same campaign.
