Introduction
Talents are the main customization layer in Tales of the Valiant. They are divided into Martial Talents for combat ability, Magic Talents for spellcasting and magical defenses, and Technical Talents for social encounters, exploration, and object interactions.
Access is not universal. At character creation, every background gives one Talent from a short list of options, which can include more than one category. When an Improvement gives you a Talent, use only the list named in your class or subclass feature and meet its prerequisites. A Human's Ambitious trait is a separate exception that can grant a Talent from any list, subject to prerequisites.
Use the three linked guides to compare individual options. This hub covers the selection rules and routes you to the relevant list; it does not treat a Talent as automatically available just because it matches your build.

Magic Talents
Magic Talents improve spellcasting, rituals, concentration, cantrips, magical defenses, and supernatural flexibility. Check that your background, class, or subclass actually grants Magic Talent access before planning around one.
The Old Margreve adds Teleporting Harrier (The Old Margreve), a magic talent for characters who can teleport and then make a meaningful weapon or spell attack. It is strongest on gishes, teleporting Warlocks, melee Sorcerers, and attack-roll casters.
Labyrinth Worldbook adds Mystic Visions (Labyrinth Worldbook) and Voracious Arcana (Labyrinth Worldbook). Mystic Visions gives WIS-leaning characters stored d20 results after a long rest, while Voracious Arcana trades hit dice and HP safety for necrotic spell pressure and emergency slotless casting.

Martial Talents
Martial Talents support weapon users, armored characters, frontline defenders, skirmishers, and anyone trying to make attacks or positioning more reliable. Your specific class or subclass feature decides whether an Improvement can select from this list.
The Old Margreve adds Stunning Sniper (The Old Margreve), a ranged-weapon talent for archers who can generate frequent attacks or advantage. It expands crit fishing into control by letting a critical hit become a stun instead of only extra damage.
Labyrinth Worldbook adds Lacerating Slash (Labyrinth Worldbook), Rallying Call (Labyrinth Worldbook), and Void Strike (Labyrinth Worldbook). These support melee bleed pressure, party-wide weapon openers, and necrotic burst damage fueled by hit dice.

Technical Talents
Technical Talents cover skills, tools, languages, exploration, crafting, social play, and problem solving outside a pure damage loop. They are not an automatic Improvement choice for every class, but backgrounds can provide technical options at character creation.
The Old Margreve adds the largest talent batch here: Forest Denizen (The Old Margreve), Friend of the Fey (The Old Margreve), Friend of the Forest (The Old Margreve), and Relentless Hunter (The Old Margreve). These are campaign-shaped picks for forest survival, fey social scenes, Animal Handling, Beast-heavy play, and long pursuits.

Build Your Tales of the Valiant Character
The Tales of the Valiant character builder is live - build a Beastkin, a Kobold, or whatever your table is missing, free, right now.
Start BuildingHow to Choose a Talent
First, identify your access route. A background's choice is limited to that background's listed options. An Improvement is limited to the Talent list specified by your class or subclass. Do not start with a Talent's category and assume you can take it.
Second, check prerequisites early. Talents can require spellcasting, armor proficiency, weapon proficiency, a minimum character level, or an ability score. A Talent that looks right for the build is not available until each requirement is met.
Finally, compare the Talent to the ability-score choices your Improvement offers. A Talent is worth the trade when it supports a job you use repeatedly, protects a real weakness, or unlocks a tactic your group will see at the table.
The Old Margreve Talent Snapshot
| Talent | Category | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Stunning Sniper (The Old Margreve) | Martial | Advantage-based archers and ranged Fighters |
| Teleporting Harrier (The Old Margreve) | Magic | Teleporting gishes and attack-roll casters |
| Forest Denizen (The Old Margreve) | Technical | Forest survival, climbing, swimming, poison, and restraining hazards |
| Friend of the Fey (The Old Margreve) | Technical | Fey-heavy social campaigns and charm/frightened protection |
| Friend of the Forest (The Old Margreve) | Technical | Animal Handling, Beast encounters, and nature-flavored utility |
| Relentless Hunter (The Old Margreve) | Technical | Tracking named prey and keeping the party moving during a pursuit |
Hot Take: The Old Margreve package is strongest when the campaign supports it. Stunning Sniper and Teleporting Harrier reward a defined combat plan; its Technical Talents earn their place in forest, fey, animal, and pursuit play. A new option is not a reason to take it.
Labyrinth Worldbook Talent Snapshot
| Talent | Category | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lacerating Slash (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Martial | Piercing/slashing melee builds that want recurring bleed damage |
| Rallying Call (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Martial | Martial-heavy parties and first-round weapon pressure |
| Void Strike (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Martial | Void-themed martials and hit-die burst damage |
| Mystic Visions (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Magic | WIS casters, support builds, and clutch roll control |
| Voracious Arcana (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Magic | Risk-tolerant blasters and emergency overcasting |
| Locksmith (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Technical | Thieves' tools users and lock-heavy adventures |
| Perfect Memory (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Technical | Maze navigation, recall-heavy play, and information retention |
| Versatile Driver (Labyrinth Worldbook) | Technical | Vehicle-focused campaigns and Labyrinth travel |
Hot Take: Labyrinth Worldbook Talents are strongest when the campaign values attrition and exploration. Lacerating Slash, Void Strike, and Voracious Arcana create pressure through damage or resource conversion, while Mystic Visions, Perfect Memory, Locksmith, and Versatile Driver reward tables that make routes, barriers, and travel matter.
Final Notes
The best Talent is rarely the one with the flashiest text. It is the one that matches your class chassis, party role, campaign style, and action economy. Use the category guides above to narrow the list, then choose the Talent you will actually remember to use at the table.
