Introduction
The PF2e Remastered books have different jobs. New tables learn faster when they treat each book as a role-based reference instead of one giant required reading assignment.

Use this with the beginner guide, character creation, first-session guide, remaster explained, classes, rules, GM guide, monsters, and equipment.

If one player only wants to play a Fighter, they do not need to read every ritual, monster, variant rule, and mythic option before session one. That is not preparation. That is a hostage situation with page numbers.

Player Core
Player Core is the first book for nearly everyone. It teaches the basic rules and gives players enough options for a full campaign.
| Player Core area | Why beginners need it |
|---|---|
| Core rules | Checks, DCs, degrees of success, actions, reactions, activities, modes of play |
| Character creation | The sequence for ancestry, background, class, attributes, skills, feats, and gear |
| Ancestries and heritages | The starting identity layer for Player Core characters |
| Backgrounds | Old life, attribute boosts, trained skill, Lore, and skill feat |
| Classes | Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Witch, and Wizard |
| Skills and feats | Noncombat and combat tools, plus character customization |
| Equipment | Armor, weapons, shields, tools, adventuring gear, and item basics |
| Spells | Cantrips, spell ranks, traditions, focus spells, and spellcasting rules |
Player Core links to use after reading: character creation, starter classes, starter ancestries, backgrounds, skills, feat guides, equipment, and spell guides.
GM Core
GM Core is the operational book for running the game. It matters because PF2e is balanced around encounter math, treasure expectations, hazard design, DC guidance, and campaign structure.
| GM Core area | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Session zero | Sets allowed books, tone, rarity, party premise, and expectations |
| Encounter building | Keeps threat levels meaningful and predictable |
| Adjusting encounters | Helps tune difficulty without guessing wildly |
| Treasure by level | Keeps gear, wealth, runes, and consumables on track |
| Hazards | Adds traps, haunts, and environmental threats |
| Subsystems | Supports chases, influence, research, reputation, and other structured scenes |
| Variant rules | Covers campaign-changing options such as Free Archetype and other variants |
Players do not need to read GM Core cover to cover, but they should know that the GM is not inventing treasure, encounter difficulty, and variants out of thin air. The book gives the table a shared operating manual.
Monster Core
Monster Core is primarily for GMs. It gives creature stat blocks, traits, monster abilities, and encounter opposition. It also teaches the GM what creatures are likely to do and how their mechanics create battlefield pressure.
| Monster Core use | Who needs it |
|---|---|
| Building encounters | GM |
| Understanding creature traits | GM, and players who use Recall Knowledge |
| Running monster tactics | GM |
| Choosing summon or companion expectations | GM and some players |
| Reading every stat block before playing | Nobody at a beginner table |
Players should learn how Recall Knowledge, creature traits, weaknesses, resistances, and conditions affect play. They do not need to memorize monster entries before the first session. That way lies metagaming and also boredom, which is the less cinematic villain.
Use the monster guide hub when the table is ready for creature-facing rules.
Player Core 2
Player Core 2 expands the player side. It is not a replacement for Player Core. It assumes the basic rules, action economy, character creation, and spellcasting structure already exist.
| Player Core 2 addition | Beginner use |
|---|---|
| Alchemist | Item, bomb, elixir, and formula expert |
| Barbarian | Direct rage-driven martial threat |
| Champion | Defensive holy or cause-driven protector |
| Investigator | Clue-driven skill and precision character |
| Monk | Mobile martial artist |
| Oracle | Divine caster shaped by mystery and curse pressure |
| Sorcerer | Spontaneous bloodline caster |
| Swashbuckler | Panache-driven duelist |
| Ancestries | Catfolk, Hobgoblin, Kholo, Kobold, Lizardfolk, Ratfolk, Tengu, Tripkee, and more support |
| Backgrounds | More grounded jobs and rare story premises |
| Archetypes, feats, spells, equipment | More build paths and table options |
Use Player Core 2 when a player has a clear concept. Do not make every new player browse it as a second homework packet unless they ask for more options.
Later Remastered Books
Later books are useful, but they should enter the campaign with purpose.
| Book | Add it when... | Useful local guide |
|---|---|---|
| Howl of the Wild | The campaign wants animal, wilderness, beast, ecological, or unusual ancestry themes | Howl of the Wild |
| War of Immortals | The campaign wants divine upheaval, mythic rules, animist/exemplar themes, or god-scale consequences | War of Immortals, Mythic |
| Guns & Gears Remastered | The campaign allows firearms, steampunk tech, inventors, gunslingers, gadgets, and vehicles | Guns & Gears |
| Treasure Vault Remastered | Gear, treasure, alchemy, consumables, magic items, and shopping matter more | Treasure Vault |
| Battlecry! | The campaign focuses on war, battlefield leadership, Commander, Guardian, banners, and tactical formations | Battlecry! |
| Monster Core 2 | The GM needs more creature variety and encounter tools | Monster Core 2 |
| Dark Archive Remastered | The campaign wants occult mystery, paranormal cases, Psychic, Thaumaturge, mindscapes, and deviant abilities | Dark Archive |
The safe beginner policy: add themed books when the campaign theme asks for them. A dungeon crawl does not need every psychic case file, siege engine, mythic destiny, and alchemical shopping aisle on day one.
What Each Player Should Read
Different characters need different reading.
| Character type | Minimum useful reading |
|---|---|
| Martial character | Checks, actions, movement, Strikes, multiple attack penalty, weapons, armor, class features |
| Shield user | Raise a Shield, Shield Block if available, shields, armor, reactions |
| Spellcaster | Spellcasting rules, cantrips, spell ranks, tradition, spell slots or repertoire, focus spells if relevant |
| Skill expert | Skills, skill actions, exploration activities, Lore, class skill features |
| Healer | Medicine, Treat Wounds, Battle Medicine if used, healing spells, dying and recovery |
| Alchemist or item-heavy character | Alchemical items, formulas, consumables, Crafting, Bulk |
| Summon or companion character | Summoned creature rules, companion/familiar rules, action expectations |
Use combat, skills, equipment, spell guides, dying and death, companions and familiars, and summoned creatures as needed.
What The GM Should Read
A new GM should read wider than the players, but still in a useful order.
| GM priority | Why |
|---|---|
| Basic rules and actions | You need to adjudicate common checks and turns |
| Character creation | You need to help players finish legal sheets |
| Encounter building | PF2e difficulty labels are meaningful |
| Monster rules | You need to run stat blocks cleanly |
| Treasure and rewards | The math expects level-appropriate gear |
| Hazards and environments | Not every challenge should be a creature |
| Subsystems | Social, research, chase, influence, and other structured scenes add variety |
| Variants | Optional rules change campaign assumptions |
The GM does not need to memorize every option. The GM needs to know where rules live and which options are allowed.
Source Access And Rarity
PF2e uses rarity as a campaign control tool.
| Rarity | Beginner meaning |
|---|---|
| Common | Usually available by default |
| Uncommon | Ask the GM or meet access requirements |
| Rare | Requires explicit GM permission and often campaign support |
| Unique | Usually specific to one character, creature, item, event, or story |
Rarity is not a moral judgment. It is a setting and campaign dial. A Gunslinger may be normal in one campaign and out of place in another. A rare background might be perfect for a ghost story and absurd in a grounded village campaign.

|---|---|
| Before character creation | Beginner guide, character creation, and allowed books list |
| During creation | Your ancestry, heritage, background, class, trained skills, equipment, and starting feats |
| Before session one | First-session guide, your class features, your common actions, and your gear |

| Before character creation | Character creation rules, class basics, background/ancestry access, and table concept |
| Before session one | Encounter building, hazards, treasure expectations, basic monster rules, and first adventure procedures |
| After session one | Subsystems, environments, advanced treasure, variant rules, and thematic sourcebooks |
Common Book Mistakes
| Mistake | Better habit |
|---|---|
| Buying everything first | Start with Player Core, then add based on role and campaign |
| Treating Player Core 2 as mandatory | Use it when it supports a concept |
| Letting players browse rare options silently | Decide rarity access before builds lock |
| Running without GM Core guidance | PF2e expects encounter, treasure, and hazard structure |
| Letting later books define a beginner campaign by accident | Add themed books because the campaign wants that theme |
| Asking players to read monster stat blocks | Teach creature traits and Recall Knowledge instead |
| Adding Free Archetype by default | Choose variants deliberately |
Recommended First Table Setup
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Player books | Player Core, plus Player Core 2 options by concept |
| GM books | GM Core and Monster Core |
| Later books | Add only if the campaign theme calls for them |
| Rarity | Common by default, uncommon by access or permission, rare by conversation |
| Variants | Baseline first, variants later unless the group already knows why |
| Character level | Level 1 for most new groups |
| Treasure | Use normal expectations unless using a deliberate variant |
This setup gives the table enough PF2e to be PF2e without turning the first campaign into a convention booth inventory list.
Hot Take
A first PF2e library should match the campaign's needs: give each person the book they need, when they need it. GMs keep a campaign focused by saying "not for this campaign" to options that do not suit it.
