The short answer

Githzerai from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes get +2 Wisdom and +1 Intelligence, advantage on saves against being charmed or frightened (Mental Discipline), invisible mage hand, and once-per-long-rest castings of shield at 3rd level and detect thoughts at 5th, using Wisdom and needing no components. Monk is the best fit, followed by Cleric and Druid.

Introduction

Githzerai are the monastic, Limbo-dwelling faction of the gith race from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, ascetic philosophers who fled the tyranny of their kin's founder, Gith, and built fortress-monasteries that drift through the chaos of Limbo, held together by nothing but disciplined psionic will. Where their cousins the githyanki are a warrior caste built for Strength and martial weapons, githzerai are built for Wisdom: a straight +2 WIS increase, advantage on saves against being charmed or frightened, and a small, useful ladder of free psionic spells that scales with character level.

The trait list reads like a monastery's curriculum rather than a battlefield loadout: Mental Discipline protects the mind, Githzerai Psionics hands you mage hand at 1st level and then free castings of Shield and Detect Thoughts as you level, and the shared gith package tacks on +1 INT, 30 feet of speed, and both Common and Gith. There's no subrace choice within Githzerai itself; you're picking the githzerai half of the gith split, not further branching from there.

Ratings use a four-color system reflecting overall power in the context of the 2014 rules:

  • ● Red - Poor. Avoid or situational at best.
  • ● Orange - Situational. Useful in specific builds or campaigns.
  • ● Green - Good. Reliable value in most builds.
  • ● Blue - Excellent. Best-in-slot or near it for the right build.

Racial Traits

Githzerai is one of the two gith subraces (the other is the warrior-caste Githyanki). All Githzerai characters get the shared gith traits below plus the Githzerai-specific traits that follow.

● Ability Score Increase: +1 INT (shared gith), +2 WIS (Githzerai)

Every gith gets +1 Intelligence as part of the base race, and the Githzerai subrace layers on a full +2 Wisdom. That makes Githzerai one of the few 2014 races with a +2 in Wisdom (Kalashtar, Firbolg and the Wildhunt Shifter are others), which pays off for Cleric, Druid, and especially Monk, whose AC and Ki save DC both scale off WIS. The +1 INT is a minor bonus almost anywhere else, and a small nudge toward a skilled Wizard if you're willing to leave the WIS bump on the table.

● Mental Discipline

You have advantage on saving throws against the charmed and frightened conditions. These are two of the most common ways a spellcaster or a squishy melee character gets removed from a fight (dominate person, fear, a banshee's Horrifying Visage), and advantage on the save is a strong, always-on defensive layer that costs you nothing to use. It's especially valuable for a class without another reliable way to shore up mental saves.

● Githzerai Psionics

You know the mage hand cantrip, and the hand is invisible when you cast it with this trait: a small but useful upgrade over the standard version for scouting, disarming traps at range, or palming an item unseen. At 3rd level you can cast Shield once with this trait, regaining the ability on a long rest; at 5th level you also gain one casting of Detect Thoughts per long rest, so you keep both. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability, and neither spell requires components. Unlike the githyanki version of this trait, the spellcasting ability matters here: a creature whose mind you probe with detect thoughts makes a Wisdom save against your Wisdom-based DC. A free Shield at the level most characters first start facing dangerous threats is a once-per-day "no, you don't hit me" button against anything short of a critical hit, and Detect Thoughts is a strong social and investigative tool for any class, caster or not.

● Size and Speed

Gith are taller and leaner than humans, most standing a slender 6 feet, and your base walking speed is 30 feet: unremarkable but solid, with no penalty to make up for.

● Languages

Common and Gith. Gith is a niche pick outside of gith-focused or planar campaigns, but it's flavorful and occasionally useful for interacting with mind flayers' old victims, other gith, or lore tied to Limbo and the Astral Plane.

Ability Scores

Wisdom (+2): The full ability score increase, and it lands on one of the three most commonly called saving throws (with Dexterity and Constitution) as well as the casting stat for Cleric and Druid and the AC and Ki save DC stat for Monk. This is Githzerai's headline mechanical selling point.

Intelligence (+1): A minor secondary bump shared by all gith. It helps a Wizard's spell save DC modestly and boosts a handful of INT-based skills, but it won't carry a dedicated INT caster the way a race that puts +2 directly into Intelligence would.

Society and Background

Githzerai society lives in fortress-monasteries that drift through the endless chaos of Limbo, held stable only by the psychic discipline of rare individuals called anarchs, who can shape matter, energy, and even gravity out of the plane's raw chaos-stuff through concentrated will. Without that constant mental effort, Limbo's turbulence would tear a community apart, which is why githzerai culture prizes meditation, education, and physical training above almost anything else: a githzerai who can't hold their own mind steady is a liability to everyone around them.

Menyar-Ag, the ancient leader who brought the githzerai into Limbo, can call every fortress to him when he needs them. Zerths, the closest thing githzerai have to priests, stand in for Zerthimon, the founder who challenged Gith and died in the civil war that followed; githzerai believe he will return and lead the zerths to a new paradise first.

This background matters at the table beyond flavor text. A githzerai character is, by default, a disciplined outsider on the Material Plane: someone who finds the "immutable" structure of a normal campaign setting sluggish and strange after a life spent counteracting Limbo's chaos with pure mental force. Hermit, Sage, and Soldier backgrounds all fit naturally, and a githzerai raised in a monastery makes a strong case for taking Monk, Cleric, or Druid even before the ability score increase enters the conversation. A character tied to the Sha'sal Khou, the secret movement of githzerai and githyanki working to reunite the two societies, gives a githzerai a reason to travel beside a githyanki instead of fighting one.

Best Classes

● Monk

The single best thematic and mechanical fit in the catalog. Monk's AC formula (10 + DEX + WIS) and Ki save DC both scale directly off Wisdom, and +2 WIS is exactly the stat Githzerai hands you in full. Mental Discipline's advantage against charm and frightened overlaps meaningfully with Stillness of Mind at 7th level, giving a githzerai Monk one of the sturdiest mental-save profiles in the game by mid-tier play. The free Shield spell at 3rd level patches Monk's squishy early-game AC, the stretch before you've stacked enough WIS and levels to make Unarmored Defense shine, and it costs you nothing else to have in your back pocket. On top of the mechanics, a githzerai Monk is barely even a stretch of flavor: ascetic monastery discipline and mind-over-matter psionics are what the subrace already is.

Hot Take: Every "best race for Monk" conversation in the 2014 ruleset defaults to Wood Elf or Variant Human, but Githzerai solves a problem neither touches. A 3rd-level Monk with 15 Dexterity and 17 Wisdom has AC 15. One racial shield makes that AC 20 until your next turn, and Patient Defense can give attackers disadvantage on top of it, which turns the round a boss focuses you into the round it misses. Wood Elf gives you speed you already have from Unarmored Movement. The trade-off: shield and Deflect Missiles both use your reaction, so pick one per round.

● Cleric

WIS is Cleric's entire spellcasting engine, so +2 WIS improves spell save DC and spell attack bonus directly from level 1. Mental Discipline protects the caster from being charmed or frightened out of a fight, and the free Shield spell is a legitimate emergency AC boost for a class that's frequently in melee range without heavy armor early on. A Knowledge or War Domain Cleric leans especially well into a githzerai's disciplined, mind-focused theme, though the mechanical fit holds for any domain.

● Druid

Same core logic as Cleric: +2 WIS scales spell save DC directly, and Mental Discipline shields a class that's vulnerable to being charmed (fey-adjacent enemies, dominate effects) while concentrating on a key spell. The free Shield spell doesn't work while Wild Shaped, but it's still useful in humanoid form before or after a shapeshift. Circle of the Land gets the most from the Wisdom bump because it spends more of its turns casting.

● Fighter

Not an obvious pairing on paper, since Fighter cares about STR or DEX rather than WIS, but a Wisdom save is one of the more commonly targeted saves against a front-line martial. Mental Discipline plus a free Shield spell patch two specific Fighter weaknesses (mental-save fragility and a moment of missing AC) without costing the class anything it actually wants. It's a serviceable pick when you want the free defensive utility more than a stat bump.

● Wizard

The shared gith +1 INT helps, and a free Shield spell is always welcome for a class with notoriously low starting AC and hit points. But the headline +2 WIS goes entirely to waste on a Wizard's core math, so a race that puts its full increase into Intelligence will out-build Githzerai for a dedicated arcane caster.

The Dungeons & Dragons (5e, 2014) character builder is live - build a Beastkin, a Kobold, or whatever your table is missing, free, right now.

Start Building

Worst Classes

● Barbarian

Barbarian wants Strength and Constitution above everything, and Githzerai offers neither. Mental Discipline is nice, and the Berserker's Mindless Rage covers some of the same ground at 6th level. The free Shield spell is worse: you can't cast spells while raging, so it is unusable in exactly the fights where a Barbarian needs AC. A Half-Orc or Mountain Dwarf, both of which push STR or CON directly, will build a stronger Barbarian than Githzerai in nearly every case.

● Sorcerer

CHA-primary; neither +1 INT nor +2 WIS improves spell save DC or spell attack rolls. You get the saving-throw advantage and a free cantrip, but none of it touches the stat that actually drives the class. A Tiefling or Half-Elf, each of which boosts Charisma directly, is a far more efficient choice.

● Paladin

CHA-primary again. Aura of Courage makes you immune to being frightened at 10th level, which leaves Mental Discipline covering only charm from then on. Neither ability score increase supports the class's core numbers, and the free Shield spell is a minor consolation prize on a class that usually invests in heavy armor and a shield of its own.

● Rogue

DEX-primary, and while a Wisdom-based Rogue subclass or a Perception-heavy build exists, Rogue gets more mileage from a race that boosts DEX directly or grants Stealth-relevant traits. Githzerai's kit doesn't line up with Sneak Attack, Cunning Action, or Rogue's skill-monkey identity, though Mental Discipline still helps a scout who's frequently alone and exposed to fear effects.

Best Feats

● Resilient (WIS)

Shores up Wisdom saves on top of an already-high Wisdom score and Mental Discipline, pushing you toward near-immunity to the most common mental-save effects that don't already fall under charmed or frightened.

● War Caster

Useful on a githzerai Monk, Cleric, or Druid who wants to hold concentration on a spell while getting hit, a natural pairing with the free Detect Thoughts (which requires concentration) if you want to keep questioning a suspect while combat is a live possibility nearby.

● Mobile

A strong pick for a githzerai Monk specifically. It stacks with the class's already-elevated speed and reinforces the hit-and-retreat playstyle that a free Shield spell and high WIS-based AC both support.

● Alert

A solid general pick for a "hard to catch off guard" character: +5 initiative, and you can't be surprised while conscious. It does nothing against charm or fear; that part stays with Mental Discipline.

● Observant

A solid but not essential pickup for a WIS-based build: +1 Wisdom, +5 to passive Perception and passive Investigation, and lip reading: a small utility bump that fits a githzerai's watchful, disciplined theme.

● Lucky

A generically strong feat on any race, but especially useful alongside Mental Discipline: the two together give you two layers of protection against a single dangerous save (Mental Discipline's advantage, then a Luck point to reroll if it still fails). It's a good pick for a Monk or Cleric who wants to further minimize the odds of getting locked down by a charm or fear effect at a critical moment.

Multiclassing Considerations

Monk + Cleric: Both classes want Wisdom, so the +2 WIS increase serves either half equally. A Cleric dip adds domain features and spells. It also grants armor and shield proficiency, but a Monk who wears either loses Unarmored Defense and Martial Arts, so leave the armor behind and keep the racial Shield spell as your AC boost.

Monk + Druid: Another WIS/WIS pairing. A few levels of Druid open up Wild Shape as an emergency escape or scouting tool, while Monk martial arts and unarmored AC carry the front-line role. Mental Discipline covers both halves against charm effects that would otherwise ruin a Wild Shape or Ki-heavy turn.

Fighter + Monk: A STR/DEX Fighter chassis with a few levels of Monk grafted on for Martial Arts and a free Shield spell gets more mileage from the WIS bump than a pure Fighter would, without fully committing to Monk's slower weapon-damage scaling.

Cleric + Wizard: An unusual but workable pairing for a githzerai who wants both spell lists. The +2 WIS carries Cleric spellcasting while the shared gith +1 INT gives Wizard a small head start, and Mental Discipline keeps a charm or fear effect from ending your turn before you can cast. It's a slower build than committing to one class, but it fits the flavor of a githzerai zerth who studies arcane theory alongside psionic discipline.

Example Build: Githzerai Monk (Levels 1-10)

Race: Githzerai (+1 INT, +2 WIS) | Class: Monk (Way of the Open Hand) | Background: Hermit

Starting Stats (Point Buy, 27 points): STR 10, DEX 15, CON 14, INT 8 (+1=9), WIS 15 (+2=17), CHA 8

LevelKey ChoiceNotes
1Monk 1Martial Arts, Unarmored Defense (10 + DEX + WIS = 15)
2Monk 2Ki, Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, Step of the Wind
3Monk 3Way of the Open Hand, Deflect Missiles; racial Shield (both use your reaction)
4Monk 4Slow Fall; ASI: +1 DEX, +1 WIS (15 to 16, 17 to 18)
5Monk 5Extra Attack, Stunning Strike
6Monk 6Ki-Empowered Strikes, Wholeness of Body
7Monk 7Evasion, Stillness of Mind (pairs directly with Mental Discipline)
8Monk 8ASI: +2 DEX (16 to 18)
9Monk 9Unarmored Movement improvement
10Monk 10Purity of Body (immunity to disease and poison)

Key Tactics:

  • Use the free Shield spell in levels 3-7, while your AC is still 15 or 16. It's most valuable exactly when it unlocks.
  • Save Detect Thoughts at 5th level for social encounters and investigation rather than combat; it needs concentration and your action, which an Open Hand Monk would rather spend on attacks.
  • After 7th level, Mental Discipline gives you advantage to resist charm and fear, and Stillness of Mind ends one that lands, for the cost of your action.
  • At 8th level, Resilient (WIS) instead of +2 DEX raises Wisdom to 19 and adds Wisdom save proficiency. It's worth it in a campaign heavy on Wisdom saves, though Diamond Soul gives you every save proficiency at 14th.

FAQ

Is Githzerai a good race for Monk?

Yes. It's arguably the tightest thematic and mechanical fit in the 2014 race catalog. +2 WIS scales Monk AC and spell save DC, Mental Discipline overlaps with Stillness of Mind against charm and fear, and the free Shield spell shores up the class's early-game AC before ability score increases raise Unarmored Defense.

What spells does Githzerai get for free, and at what level?

Githzerai Psionics grants the mage hand cantrip (invisible when cast with this trait) at 1st level, one free casting of Shield at 3rd level, and one free casting of Detect Thoughts at 5th level. Each leveled spell recharges on a long rest and needs no components. Wisdom is the spellcasting ability for all three.

How does Githzerai compare to Githyanki?

Both subraces share the base gith package (+1 INT, 30-foot speed, Common and Gith), but they diverge hard from there. Githyanki gets +2 STR, proficiency with light and medium armor and several martial weapons, and a free jump then misty step: a warrior-caste kit built for a front-line martial. Githzerai gets +2 WIS, no armor or weapon proficiencies, Mental Discipline, and a free shield then detect thoughts: an ascetic, mind-focused kit built for a WIS caster or a Monk. Pick Githyanki for a STR-based martial and Githzerai for anything that wants Wisdom.

Does Mental Discipline stack with a Monk's Stillness of Mind?

They don't stack numerically, but they cover the same problem from two angles. Mental Discipline gives advantage on the saving throw when you're first targeted by a charm or fear effect. Stillness of Mind, gained at Monk 7th level, lets you spend an action to end an existing charmed or frightened condition on yourself outright. Together, a githzerai Monk is hard to charm or frighten in the first place and can shrug off the rare successful one.

Is Githzerai good for a Wizard?

It's playable but not optimal. Wizard wants Intelligence, and Githzerai's ability score increase goes to Wisdom, not Intelligence. The base gith package's +1 INT helps a little, but a race that puts +2 directly into Intelligence will out-build it for a dedicated Wizard. Githzerai shines far more on a WIS-based caster or a Monk.

What background fits a githzerai character?

Hermit, Sage, and Soldier all line up with githzerai monastic culture: a Hermit background fits a character raised in an isolated fortress-monastery on Limbo, Sage fits a scholar of psionic theory or gith history, and Soldier fits someone trained for the ongoing war against the githyanki and the mind flayers. Any of the three gives a githzerai character a believable reason to have left Limbo for the Material Plane.

Do githzerai and githyanki ever work together?

Rarely, and mostly by accident of shared enmity toward the mind flayers, but the sourcebook does describe the Sha'sal Khou, a secret movement of githyanki and githzerai radicals working to end the war between the two societies and reunify the gith people. It's a niche campaign hook rather than a common occurrence, and most githzerai and githyanki who meet in the field still treat each other as enemies on sight.

Final Notes

Githzerai rewards a build that wants to lean on Wisdom, whether that's a full-caster's spell save DC or a Monk's AC and Ki economy, and it backs that up with a narrow but concrete defensive kit: advantage against two of the game's most disruptive conditions and two free spells that arrive exactly when a low-level character can use them most. It falls off hard for anything built around Strength or Charisma, where the race's whole toolkit sits unused.

If you want a Wisdom-focused build with no-cost defensive utility baked into the race itself, and especially if that build is a Monk, Githzerai is one of the most mechanically coherent picks in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes.

Githzerai split from a shared ancestry with the githyanki, who raid the Astral Plane and Wildspace - see the Spelljammer guide's denizens section for that side of the family's setting role. Githzerai themselves are natives of Limbo, not Wildspace, and this race's mechanics remain sourced to Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes unchanged.
