The short answer

Genasi from the Elemental Evil Player's Companion get +2 Constitution and Primordial, plus one of four subraces: Air (+1 Dex, unlimited breath, levitate), Earth (+1 Str, Earth Walk, pass without trace), Fire (+1 Int, darkvision, fire resistance, produce flame, burning hands at 3rd) or Water (+1 Wis, acid resistance, water breathing and swimming, shape water, create or destroy water at 3rd). Their spells use Constitution.

Introduction

Genasi are the offspring of mortals and elemental beings (genies, mephits, and the raw stuff of the planes), and in D&D 5e 2014, they translate that heritage into one of the most mechanically diverse races in the game. Where most races give you a flat bonus and a utility trait, the Genasi give you four completely different mechanical identities packed inside one racial wrapper. The base chassis is already competitive: +2 Constitution, innate spellcasting, and elemental resistance or mobility. Only Fire Genasi get darkvision in the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. The subrace stacks on top.

The key tension with Genasi is that CON is universally valuable but rarely a primary stat. The +2 goes to work in the background: more hit points, better concentration saves, stronger Constitution checks. The subrace's +1 has to carry the offensive stat weight, which means your choice of element is really your choice of character concept.

D&D 5e Genasi Race

Disclaimer

Ratings use a four-color system reflecting mechanical value in a general 5e 2014 context:

  • ● Red - Poor or situational. Avoid unless your campaign specifically supports it.
  • ● Orange - Situationally useful. Decent in the right build or campaign.
  • ● Green - Good. Solid mechanical value across most builds.
  • ● Blue - Excellent. A meaningful advantage in most situations.

Racial Traits

All Genasi share these base traits before subrace selection.

● +2 Constitution

CON is the most universally useful ability score in the game. It affects hit point maximum, Constitution saving throws (the most contested save for concentration spells), and a handful of skill checks. Getting +2 for free means every Genasi starts with a tankier baseline than most races, and any caster who relies on concentration spells gets a quiet but consistent accuracy boost on those saves.

● Speed 30 ft., Size Medium

Standard. No penalty, no bonus. Clean baseline.

● Languages: Common + Primordial

Primordial covers all four elemental dialects (Aquan, Auran, Ignan, Terran), meaning a Genasi character can communicate with elemental creatures across all four planes with this single language proficiency. Underrated for roleplay and for Druids or Rangers who encounter elemental-adjacent creatures frequently.

Subraces

● Fire Genasi

Ability Score Increase: +1 Intelligence

Fire Genasi represent the most INT-friendly element, making them the natural fit for Intelligence-based spellcasters and skill monkeys.

● Darkvision 60 ft. Standard darkvision: solid, always welcome. Eliminates the need for a torch or light cantrip in most dungeon environments.

● Fire Resistance Resistance to fire damage. Fire is one of the most common damage types in the game: dragon breath, Fireball, Hell Hound attacks, and Magmin swarms all run on fire. This is passive mitigation that pays off in almost any campaign.

● Produce Flame (cantrip) A damage cantrip that also provides light. It uses Constitution for its attack roll here. For non-casters, it's a 30-foot ranged attack that scales with level. For casters, it may be redundant, but the light utility never hurts.

● Burning Hands 1/day from 3rd level (CON-based) A 15-foot cone that deals 3d6 fire damage. The CON-based save DC is the complication: a Wizard using this likely has CON +1, meaning a mediocre DC. Most useful at low levels as a burst option when you're out of spell slots.

● Water Genasi

Ability Score Increase: +1 Wisdom

Water Genasi are the WIS-friendly subrace, ideal for Clerics, Druids, and Rangers.

Note: Water Genasi have no Darkvision in the Elemental Evil Player's Companion.

● Acid Resistance Acid is less common than fire but still meaningful: Black Dragons, Ochre Jellies, and various aberrations use it. A rare resistance that pays off in the right campaigns.

● Amphibious You breathe both air and water. No suffocation risk underwater, ever. Combined with a swim speed, this is the complete aquatic package without any class investment.

● Swim Speed 30 ft. Matching your land speed in water is powerful in aquatic campaigns and passable anywhere water appears.

● Shape Water (cantrip) A utility cantrip with limited combat application. Moving small amounts of water, freezing pools, creating simple shapes: useful for creative problem-solving, weak in combat.

● Create or Destroy Water 1/day from 3rd level (CON-based) Cast as a 2nd-level spell, so it creates or destroys up to 20 gallons of water. Strong in desert survival scenarios, niche otherwise.

● Earth Genasi

Ability Score Increase: +1 Strength

Earth Genasi are built for martial characters (Fighters, Paladins, Barbarians) who want a tanky, movement-efficient front-liner.

Note: Earth Genasi do not have Darkvision; only Fire Genasi do. Plan for light sources accordingly.

● Earth Walk You can move across difficult terrain made of earth or stone without spending extra movement. This is a passive, always-on trait that matters more than it looks. Rocky dungeons, mountain passes, cave environments: in practice you keep full speed where the rest of the party moves at half.

● Pass Without Trace 1/day (CON-based) A 2nd-level concentration spell, available from 1st level, that adds +10 to Dexterity (Stealth) checks for you and every creature you choose within 30 feet, for up to an hour. It has no saving throw, so Constitution as the casting stat costs you nothing, and a Fighter or Barbarian can set up a party ambush as well as any Druid.

● Air Genasi

Ability Score Increase: +1 Dexterity

Air Genasi favor DEX-based martials (Rogues, Rangers, Monks) and any class that benefits from vertical mobility.

Note: Air Genasi do not have Darkvision either. Account for this in your equipment and cantrip choices.

● Unending Breath You can hold your breath indefinitely. This is a zero-cost trait that eliminates a specific lethal threat entirely: no suffocation on a failed check, no countdown timer in a fight.

● Levitate 1/day (CON-based) Levitate is one of the strongest 2nd-level spells in the game for combat control, and you get it from 1st level. Lifting a single target up to 20 feet in the air removes it from melee range for up to 10 minutes of concentration; an unwilling target resists with a CON save against your Constitution-based DC. Even with a modest CON modifier, the utility of locking down an enemy or elevating yourself above reach attacks is extraordinary for a non-caster.

Ability Scores

All Genasi get +2 CON as a base. The secondary stat depends on subrace:

SubraceSecondary StatPrimary Users
Fire+1 INTWizard, Arcane Trickster, Eldritch Knight
Water+1 WISCleric, Druid, Ranger
Earth+1 STRFighter, Paladin, Barbarian
Air+1 DEXRogue, Ranger, Monk

CON as the primary racial bonus is the defining characteristic of the Genasi chassis. It won't maximize your attack stat or spellcasting stat, but it makes every build more durable and every caster better at holding concentration. Treat the subrace's +1 as the complementary bonus, and the +2 CON as the chassis foundation.

Best Classes

● Wizard (Fire Genasi)

Fire Genasi Wizards get +2 CON and +1 INT, exactly the two stats a Wizard cares about most. CON improves concentration saves, which is the single biggest quality-of-life boost a Wizard can get. The fire resistance and Burning Hands round out a natural evoker build.

● Cleric (Water Genasi)

Water Genasi deliver +2 CON and +1 WIS to one of the best classes in the game. Clerics depend on WIS for spell DCs, and +2 CON extends concentration on staple spells like Spirit Guardians and Bless. Amphibious and the swim speed are icing on a strong core.

● Druid (Water Genasi)

The +1 WIS + CON combination is nearly as good for Druids as for Clerics. Water breathing and a swim speed keep a Water Genasi Druid mobile underwater in its own form before Wild Shape allows swimming beasts at 4th level, and Create or Destroy Water fits the nature-magic aesthetic.

● Fighter (Earth or Air Genasi)

Earth Genasi Fighters get +1 STR +2 CON, a clean martial stat block. Earth Walk removes difficult terrain penalties in dungeon environments, often the most valuable passive a front-liner can have. Air Genasi Fighters taking a DEX build get +1 DEX +2 CON and a combat Levitate for encounter control.

● Ranger (Water or Air Genasi)

Rangers benefit from WIS (Water) or DEX (Air), and CON aids concentration on spells like Hunter's Mark and Conjure Animals. The thematic fit is strong: elemental rangers tracking enemies through volcanic or coastal terrain are compelling concepts.

● Rogue (Air Genasi)

Air Genasi Rogues get +1 DEX +2 CON. DEX is the Rogue's primary stat, so the pairing works. The issue is that CON matters less for Rogues than for classes with concentration spells, and the racial traits (Levitate) are more useful for mobility than for Sneak Attack efficiency. Solid, not exceptional.

Start Building

Worst Classes

● Sorcerer

Sorcerers need CHA, which no Genasi subrace provides. CON is useful but doesn't fix the primary stat miss. A Fire Genasi Sorcerer has mismatched stats: the +1 INT is wasted and the +2 CON doesn't compensate for a mediocre CHA at character creation.

● Warlock

Same issue as Sorcerer. Warlocks are fully CHA-dependent, and no Genasi subrace offers CHA. The innate spells are CON-based and largely redundant with a Warlock's own Eldritch Invocations.

● Paladin

Paladins need STR and CHA. Earth Genasi provides the STR piece (+1 STR), making it the closest fit, but the missing CHA bonus hurts spell DCs and Aura scaling. Playable, not optimal.

Best Feats

● War Caster

The single best feat for any concentration caster, and Genasi's +2 CON already makes concentration checks more survivable. War Caster adds advantage on those saves, lets you cast spells as opportunity attacks, and allows somatic components with hands full. Stack this with CON for near-unbreakable concentration.

● Resilient (Constitution)

For Genasi who don't take War Caster, Resilient (CON) adds proficiency to Constitution saving throws, nearly guaranteeing concentration maintenance on most hits. Combined with an already-high CON, this is the concentration build's other pillar.

● Elemental Adept (Fire, Fire Genasi)

Fire Genasi who invest in fire-damage spells (Fireball, Scorching Ray, Burning Hands) can take Elemental Adept (Fire) to treat 1s on damage dice as 2s and ignore fire resistance. Your racial fire resistance also halves the damage when you catch yourself in your own fire spell, and ignoring enemy resistance dramatically increases effective damage.

● Tough

Adds 2 hit points per level, stacking on top of an already-high CON modifier. For Genasi Fighters or Barbarians, this creates a wall-like hit point total. Less exciting than active feats but mechanically solid for front-liners who want pure survivability.

● Mobile (Air Genasi)

Air Genasi with Levitate already have vertical mobility; Mobile adds 10 feet of speed, keeps difficult terrain from slowing a Dash, and stops creatures you attacked in melee from making opportunity attacks against you that turn. For a DEX-based skirmisher (Rogue, Ranger, Monk), this creates exceptional hit-and-run potential.

Multiclassing Considerations

Fire Genasi: Wizard to Cleric or Druid The +2 CON supports concentration across different casting traditions. A 5 Wizard / 5 Cleric Fire Genasi has a 10th-level caster's slots but tops out at 3rd-level spells, and multiclassing into Cleric needs 13 Wisdom.

Water Genasi: Cleric to Druid Both use WIS, both benefit from CON. Water Genasi is one of the only subraces where a Cleric/Druid split doesn't immediately feel like a stat mismatch.

Earth Genasi: Fighter to Paladin +1 STR + 2 CON supports a Fighter/Paladin split, though you still need 13 Charisma to multiclass into Paladin. Earth Walk and Pass Without Trace support a stealthy Paladin concept.

Air Genasi: Rogue to Ranger Both use DEX, both benefit from CON for concentration (Ranger) and durability (Rogue). Levitate creates an escape and control option that neither class normally carries.

Example Build: Earth Genasi Battle Master Fighter (Levels 1-10)

Race: Earth Genasi | Class: Fighter (Battle Master) | Background: Outlander

Ability Scores (Point Buy, before racial): STR 15 (+1 racial = 16), CON 15 (+2 racial = 17), DEX 13, WIS 12, INT 8, CHA 8 (27 points)

LevelKey ChoiceNotes
1Fighter 1Defense Fighting Style. Chain mail, plate when you can afford it. STR 16, CON 17
3Battle MasterManeuvers: Trip Attack, Precision Attack, Disarming Strike
4ASI: STR 16 to 18Hitting at +6 with great weapons
6ASI to ToughHit point total becomes substantial with Fighter's short-rest hit dice + CON 16 + Tough
8ASI to War Caster or STR 20War Caster for flexibility; STR 20 for pure damage
10Improved Combat Superiority (d10)Pass Without Trace 1/day sets up ambushes; the third attack arrives at 11

Key Traits in Action: Earth Walk keeps you adjacent to targets in rocky terrain when they can't chase. Pass Without Trace lets the whole party approach stealthily before combat. CON 17 also keeps Pass without Trace running when an ambush turns into a fight.

FAQ

What book are Genasi from in D&D 5e 2014?

Genasi appear in the Elemental Evil Player's Companion, a free supplemental PDF released by Wizards of the Coast alongside the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure.

How many subraces does the Genasi have?

Four: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, each tied to one of the four classical elements and granting a different +1 ability score bonus and unique traits.

Can Genasi breathe underwater?

Only Water Genasi are Amphibious and can breathe both air and water. They also gain a swim speed of 30 feet. Air, Fire, and Earth Genasi cannot breathe underwater by default.

Is the Genasi good for caster classes?

It depends on the subrace. Fire Genasi (+1 INT) pair with Wizard and Arcane Trickster. Water Genasi (+1 WIS) pair with Cleric and Druid. Air and Earth Genasi lean martial, though CON still benefits any concentration caster.

Are Genasi innate spells cast using spell slots?

No. Genasi innate spells, like Burning Hands or Create or Destroy Water, are usable once per long rest without expending a spell slot, using CON as the spellcasting ability. This is separate from any class spellcasting.

Final Notes

Hot Take: Earth Genasi is the best stealth race in the 2014 books, and it has no Stealth trait. Merge with Stone gives you pass without trace at 1st level, a 2nd-level spell a Ranger or Druid can't cast until 5th or 3rd, and it adds +10 to every chosen ally's Stealth, not just yours. The spell has no saving throw, so casting it with Constitution costs nothing. A level 1 party in plate armor can sneak past a camp because the Fighter picked the right element.

Genasi are the race that rewards commitment to concept. The four subraces aren't interchangeable: picking the wrong element for your class costs mechanical value. But pick the right one, and the Genasi delivers a surprisingly complete package: a durable chassis via CON, a relevant subrace stat, innate spellcasting that supplements your class abilities, and elemental resistances or mobility that matter in the right campaign.

The Elemental Evil Player's Companion is a free download, making Genasi one of the most accessible non-PHB races in 2014 rules. From a Fire Genasi Wizard burning through dungeons to an Earth Genasi Fighter walking untouched through cavern terrain, the Genasi consistently earns its place at the table.
