Bards are the most versatile class in D&D 5e 2014: healers, controllers, face characters, and occasionally melee combatants. Their feat choices reflect this flexibility: they want to protect concentration (War Caster or Resilient), maximize their spell save DC (Charisma ASI), and add unique utility layers that their class list doesn't already cover (Fey Touched for slot efficiency, Inspiring Leader for team support).
Bards receive four ASI/feat slots by level 12 (one more than most full casters) and have Charisma as their primary stat, making them excellent candidates for Charisma-dependent feats.

Bard Feat Priorities
- Charisma 20 - Spell save DC and Bardic Inspiration are primary
- War Caster or Resilient (Con) - Concentration protection
- Fey Touched or Inspiring Leader - Utility and support expansion
- Lucky - Universal reliability safety net
Bards concentrate on their best spells constantly: Hypnotic Pattern, Polymorph, Hold Person, Faerie Fire. Losing concentration is catastrophic. Protecting it is the primary feat objective.
Top Feats for Bard
● War Caster
Bards carry weapons for their Valor or Swords subclass, have full hands, and rely on concentration in melee range. War Caster covers somatic components, gives advantage on concentration saves, and enables spell-as-OA opportunities. Essential for combat Bards. War Caster guide
● Resilient (Constitution)
Bards lack Constitution save proficiency by default. Resilient (Con) adds their full proficiency bonus to every concentration check, scaling to +6 by high levels. For backline Lore Bards who want consistent concentration without melee complications, this is often better than War Caster. Resilient guide
● Fey Touched
Free Misty Step once per long rest saves a 2nd-level slot. The 1st-level enchantment or divination spell adds spells not naturally on the Bard list. Silvery Barbs (Strixhaven) as the chosen spell is exceptionally powerful: a reaction that forces a successful roll to be rerolled. Fey Touched guide
● Lucky
Three d20 rerolls per long rest. Useful for failed concentration saves, important social rolls, and death saves. Universally good and never wasted. Lucky guide
● Inspiring Leader
After Charisma is maxed, Inspiring Leader gives the entire party temp HP equal to your level + Cha modifier before combat. At level 10 with Charisma 20, that is 15 temp HP per person: six people receive 90 total HP buffer before the encounter starts. Inspiring Leader guide
● Shadow Touched
Free Invisibility once per long rest and a 1st-level illusion or necromancy spell. For Bards who want stealth-based utility alongside their social toolkit, Shadow Touched is the complement to Fey Touched. Shadow Touched guide
● Alert
Bards benefit from going first: casting Hypnotic Pattern or Faerie Fire before enemies act is extremely powerful. Alert's +5 initiative makes the Bard consistently act before most threats. Alert guide
● Metamagic Adept
Bards do not naturally have Metamagic. Metamagic Adept (TCoE, requires Spellcasting) gives two Metamagic options and 2 sorcery points. Subtle Spell for undetectable casting or Quickened Spell for action economy, both are useful. Best for Bards who multiclass Sorcerer or who want unique casting flexibility. Metamagic Adept guide

Start BuildingFeats to Avoid
Sharpshooter: Bards are not weapon-focused damage dealers. Attack rolls are not their primary combat contribution.
Great Weapon Master: Same reasoning. Bards deal damage through spells and Bardic Inspiration, not heavy melee attacks.
Spell Sniper: Most Bard offensive spells use saves. Spell Sniper benefits attack-roll spells only, an inefficient investment. Spell Sniper guide
Example Feat Progression
Assumes a College of Lore Bard starting with Charisma 16:
Level 4: ASI, Charisma 16 to 18. Spell save DC improvement is the highest priority before any feats.
Level 8: War Caster or Resilient (Con). Once Charisma reaches 18, concentration protection becomes the next priority. Valor/Swords Bards prefer War Caster (somatic in melee); Lore Bards prefer Resilient (Con) (pure caster).
Level 12: ASI, Charisma 18 to 20 (if not done yet), or Fey Touched. A Bard with Charisma 18 who took War Caster at 8 can take either the Charisma ASI or Fey Touched. If Charisma is already 20, Fey Touched or Inspiring Leader is the pick.
FAQ
War Caster vs Resilient (Con)? Both are good. War Caster is better for melee Bards; Resilient is better for backline pure casters.
When to prioritize Charisma 20? Before most feats. Charisma powers your DC, Bardic Inspiration, and social skills.
Is Inspiring Leader good on a Bard? Yes, excellent after Charisma is maxed, fitting the support role perfectly.
Does a Bard need Spell Sniper? Rarely. Most Bard damage spells use saving throws, not attack rolls.
Is Fey Touched worth it? Yes. Free Misty Step saves slots and Silvery Barbs is one of the best reaction abilities in the game.
