Introduction
Orc is a martial-focused species with movement, durability, and scouting tools. Its defining trait, Adrenaline Rush, lets you Dash as a Bonus Action and gain temporary hit points each time you use it.
In the 2024 Player's Handbook, Orc replaces Half-Orc as the standalone species option. Along with Relentless Endurance, Orc has 120-foot Darkvision. It works best for a character that needs to reach a target, survive an attack that would otherwise drop it to 0 HP, or scout ahead in darkness.
Choose Orc when repeatable movement and defensive traits matter more than a damage bonus or a spell package.

Orc Species Traits
Darkvision 120ft: ● Best
Most species with Darkvision see 60 feet. Orcs see 120 feet. In a dungeon or at night, that range lets an Orc scout beyond the party's light source before the rest of the group can see a threat.
This does not replace careful scouting or let you see through every kind of darkness, but it gives the Orc more room to identify terrain, creatures, and obstacles before the party enters a lighted area.
Adrenaline Rush: ● Best
Adrenaline Rush lets you take the Dash action as a bonus action. You also gain temporary HP equal to your proficiency bonus when you do. You can use it a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and it refreshes on a short or long rest.
Use it when movement changes the turn: reaching a distant enemy, moving between allies, or getting behind cover. The temporary hit points do not stack, so a later use replaces any temporary hit points you still have.
At level 1, each use provides 2 temporary hit points. At level 9, each provides 4. The trait is most valuable when the Dash solves a positioning problem, not when the temporary hit points are the only benefit.
Hot Take: Adrenaline Rush can matter more than a small damage bonus when a Bonus Action Dash gets a melee character into range. Use it when a target is beyond normal movement or when cover preserves the Action for attacks.
Relentless Endurance: ● Good
When you are reduced to 0 Hit Points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 Hit Point instead. It requires no action and works once per Long Rest.
At low levels, staying at 1 Hit Point instead of falling unconscious can preserve your position and avoid immediate Death Saving Throws. At every level, it gives the party one chance to respond before you fall, but it does not prevent later damage from dropping you again.
Orc's base traits are exactly these three: Darkvision 120 ft, Adrenaline Rush, and Relentless Endurance. Powerful Build (advantage to end Grappled, count as one size larger for carrying capacity) is not an Orc trait in the 2024 PHB; it belongs to Goliath's Giant Ancestry choice list instead.
Best Classes for Orc
1. Barbarian: ● Best
Barbarians need to enter melee and stay there. Adrenaline Rush helps when the target is beyond normal movement or when the Barbarian has no more important Bonus Action that turn.
Rage reduces eligible damage, while Adrenaline Rush provides temporary hit points that absorb damage first. Relentless Endurance gives the build a once-per-Long-Rest fallback when both defenses fail.
The 2024 Player's Handbook supports Path of the Berserker, Path of the Wild Heart, Path of the World Tree, and Path of the Zealot. Choose the one whose Rage features give you something meaningful to do after you have reached the fight; Orc solves access, not subclass choice.
Build Your D&D 2024 Character

Start Building2. Fighter: ● Best
Fighters often have a free Bonus Action when they are not using Second Wind or a subclass feature. Adrenaline Rush lets a Fighter reach an enemy and still take the Attack action on the same turn.
The 120-foot Darkvision also makes a Fighter more useful during a night watch or a dungeon approach.
Choose a Fighter subclass for its own combat role. Orc's movement is most valuable in an encounter where getting to the right enemy matters more than spending that Bonus Action elsewhere.
3. Ranger: ● Good
Rangers can use Adrenaline Rush to close a gap or move to a better firing position on turns when their Bonus Action is free. The extended Darkvision supports a Ranger who scouts ahead of the party.
For a dual-wielding Ranger or a Ranger with Polearm Master, use Adrenaline Rush only when movement is worth more than the Bonus Action attack.
Choose a Ranger subclass for its own exploration or combat plan. The species adds mobility, rather than replacing the class's spell and weapon choices.
Best Backgrounds for Orc
Soldier: ● Best
Soldier provides Savage Attacker, Athletics, and Perception. Savage Attacker improves one weapon damage roll each turn. Athletics and Perception support a martial character who explores ahead of the party.
Guard: ● Good
Guard provides Perception and Athletics and offers Alert as an Origin Feat. Alert helps a front-line character act earlier, while Adrenaline Rush helps it reach the place it needs to be.
Build Example: Orc Barbarian (Levels 1-10)
Concept: A front-line Barbarian who uses Adrenaline Rush to reach enemies and Relentless Endurance as a last-resort defense.
Species: Orc
Background: Soldier (Origin Feat: Savage Attacker)
Class: Barbarian (Berserker at level 3)
Ability Scores: Put the Standard Array's highest values in Strength and Constitution, then use Soldier's listed Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution choices to support the build. The exact allocation depends on the Background adjustment you select.
Level 1: Savage Attacker rerolls one weapon damage die once per turn. Relentless Endurance is available from level 1.
Level 2: Reckless Attack grants Advantage on Strength-based attacks at the cost of granting Advantage to attacks against you. Danger Sense helps with certain Dexterity saving throws.
Level 3: Choose a Barbarian subclass. A Berserker adds extra damage to the first target hit with a Strength-based attack after using Reckless Attack while Rage is active.
Level 4: Increase Strength to 18.
Level 5: Extra Attack gives two attacks when you take the Attack action.
Level 6: Increase Strength to 20.
Level 7: Feral Instinct grants Advantage on Initiative rolls.
Level 8: Increase Constitution to 16 for more hit points.
Level 10: If you chose Berserker, Retaliation gives you a melee reaction after taking damage from a creature within 5 feet. Keep Adrenaline Rush for turns where movement still decides the fight.
At level 10, this Barbarian has 20 Strength, an Initiative advantage, a response to dropping to 0 HP, and repeated movement from Adrenaline Rush. The build works best in encounters where reaching the right target quickly matters.
Bottom Line
Orc combines extended Darkvision, repeatable Bonus Action movement, and a defense against dropping to 0 HP. It suits a Barbarian, Fighter, or Ranger when positioning, scouting, and durability matter in the campaign. Consider another species when a specific damage resistance, spell package, or Origin Feat matters more to the build.
