Introduction
Human is a flexible D&D 2024 species, not a blank default. Your Background supplies an Origin feat, and Versatile supplies another. That gives a Human two level-1 feats, but the important decision is not simply collecting the highest-rated pair. Choose feats that solve two distinct problems: initiative and durability, martial damage and luck, or spell access and skills.
Resourceful and Skillful make that flexibility easier to use at the table. One offers a reliable reroll after every Long Rest; the other can cover a party skill your class does not naturally take.

Human Species Traits
Humans are Humanoids. When you choose the species, choose Medium or Small size; either choice has 30-foot Speed.
Resourceful: ●
Finishing a Long Rest gives you Heroic Inspiration. You can spend Heroic Inspiration immediately after rolling any die to reroll it, and you must use the reroll. It is not Advantage, and it is not a before-the-roll decision. Save it for a failed save, a pivotal attack, or another roll where a second result is worth the risk.
Skillful: ●
You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice. Let the rest of the character sheet decide it: a Soldier Fighter may take Perception or Insight, while a Sage Wizard can use it for Persuasion, Stealth, or a campaign-specific knowledge skill. Avoid duplicating a proficiency from the Background or class.
Versatile: ●
Versatile grants an Origin feat of your choice. Because every 2024 Background already grants a specified Origin feat, a Human normally begins with two Origin feats. The Player's Handbook Origin feats are Alert, Crafter, Healer, Lucky, Magic Initiate, Musician, Savage Attacker, Skilled, Tavern Brawler, and Tough.
The restriction matters. Versatile does not grant a General feat such as War Caster, Ritual Caster, Inspiring Leader, or an Ability Score Improvement.
Hot Take: Human works well when its two Origin feats cover different jobs. Soldier plus Lucky adds a limited resource for important d20 tests, while Savage Attacker improves a weapon hit once per turn.
Best Classes for Human
Fighter: ●
Fighter makes excellent use of a two-feat start and later receives Ability Score Improvement or other feat choices at levels 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, 16, and 19. Soldier supplies Savage Attacker and ability-score choices that fit a Strength or Dexterity Fighter. Take Lucky from Versatile for clutch d20 tests, Alert for initiative and a tactical initiative swap, or Tough for a sturdier front line.
Practical pair: Soldier's Savage Attacker plus Lucky or Alert.
Build Your D&D 2024 Character
The D&D 2024 character builder is live - build a Beastkin, a Kobold, or whatever your table is missing, free, right now.
Start BuildingPaladin: ●
Paladins can use Skillful to cover a social or exploration proficiency while their two Origin feats handle different early needs. Acolyte supplies Magic Initiate (Cleric), which adds two Cleric cantrips and a prepared level-1 Cleric spell. Versatile can then take Alert, Lucky, Tough, or Skilled rather than duplicate that spell package.
Practical pair: Acolyte's Magic Initiate (Cleric) plus Alert or Tough.
Wizard: ●
Sage supplies Magic Initiate (Wizard), which can broaden a Wizard's cantrip selection and prepare one level-1 Wizard spell through the feat. Versatile is then useful for Alert's initiative proficiency, Lucky's limited d20 support, or Skilled's three skill or tool proficiencies. War Caster remains a level-4 General feat, so it is a later choice rather than a Human level-1 option.
Practical pair: Sage's Magic Initiate (Wizard) plus Alert or Lucky.
Best Backgrounds for Human
Soldier: ●
Soldier offers Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution as its ability-score options; Athletics and Intimidation; a gaming-set tool proficiency; and Savage Attacker. It is a clean martial starting package. Choose Lucky or Alert with Versatile to cover a separate tactical job instead of repeating weapon damage.
Sage: ●
Sage offers Constitution, Intelligence, and Wisdom; Arcana and History; calligrapher's supplies; and Magic Initiate (Wizard). It is a strong fit for a Wizard and a reasonable scholarly start for other Intelligence-based characters. Human's extra skill can address the social or scouting work Sage leaves open.
Acolyte: ●
Acolyte offers Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma; Insight and Religion; calligrapher's supplies; and Magic Initiate (Cleric). It supports a divine caster directly and gives a Paladin or Warlock a clerical utility package without using their Versatile choice.
Build Example: Human Battle Master Fighter (Levels 1-10)
Concept: A Strength-based frontliner with dependable initiative support, flexible maneuvers, and room to improve both offense and durability.
Species: Human
Background: Soldier (Savage Attacker)
Versatile feat: Lucky
Class: Fighter, choosing Battle Master at level 3
Ability scores: STR 17, CON 15, DEX 13, WIS 12, INT 10, CHA 8 (standard array, using Soldier's Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution choices)
- Level 1: Take Defense or another suitable Fighting Style, use Weapon Mastery with three chosen simple or martial weapons, and keep Lucky for a truly consequential d20 test. Savage Attacker can improve one weapon hit's damage roll each turn.
- Level 2: Action Surge adds one action on your turn, other than the Magic action. Tactical Mind can spend a Second Wind use after a failed ability check and preserves that use if the check still fails.
- Level 3: Battle Master grants three maneuvers and four d8 Superiority Dice, recovered on a Short or Long Rest. Trip Attack, Precision Attack, and Menacing Attack are useful choices when they fit the weapon and encounter.
- Level 4: Take Ability Score Improvement and raise Strength by 2, reaching 19. A feat is also legal here, but this plan values reliable attack and damage modifiers first.
- Level 6: Use Ability Score Improvement to raise Strength by 1 and Constitution by 1, reaching Strength 20 and Constitution 16.
- Level 7: Battle Master gains two maneuvers and a fifth Superiority Die; Fighter gains a second Fighting Style feat.
- Level 8: Take Tough. At this level, your Hit Point maximum increases by 16, then by 2 more for every later character level.
- Level 10: Battle Master gains two additional maneuvers, for seven known maneuvers total. The build has five Superiority Dice, not three, and Fighter's third attack arrives at level 11 rather than level 10.
This plan remains useful even if a campaign rarely takes short rests: Lucky and Resourceful are separate tools, while the Fighter's baseline attacks, Weapon Mastery, and ability scores do not depend on a maneuver die.
Bottom Line
Human offers a second Origin feat, a player-chosen skill proficiency, and Heroic Inspiration after every Long Rest. Those traits reward deliberate pairing rather than a universal "best" choice. Start from your Background's feat and ability-score options, then use Versatile to add a distinct capability your class, party, or campaign will actually use.
