The short answer

A D&D 2024 Goliath is a Medium Humanoid with 35-foot Speed and one Giant Ancestry benefit. Most benefits can be used a number of times equal to Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest, while Large Form begins at character level 5 and temporarily makes the Goliath Large, grants Advantage on Strength checks, and increases Speed by 10 feet.

How to Build a D&D 2024 Goliath

Goliaths are a strong choice for a player who wants a martial character with one clear supernatural trick. A Goliath is a Medium Humanoid, about 7 to 8 feet tall, with a Speed of 35 feet. Giant Ancestry lets you choose a single boon at character creation, and Large Form adds a later burst of size, speed, and Strength-check support.

The decision is less about finding a universally best boon and more about choosing the problem your character needs to solve. A melee combatant that struggles to reach enemies might value Cloud's Jaunt. A character who wants to hold enemies in place might value Frost's Chill or Hill's Tumble. A character that expects to take the hardest hits might prefer Stone's Endurance.

Goliath Species Traits (2024)

Giant Ancestry ●

Choose one supernatural benefit from your giant ancestry. With the exception of Powerful Build, you can use the selected benefit a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all uses when you finish a Long Rest. That limit matters: Fire's Burn, Frost's Chill, Hill's Tumble, Stone's Endurance, and Storm's Thunder are powerful moments, not effects added to every qualifying attack or hit.

BenefitWhat it doesBest use
Powerful Build ●Gives Advantage on saving throws to end Grappled and counts you as one size larger for carrying capacity.Carrying-heavy campaigns and characters who expect to be grappled.
Cloud's Jaunt ●Teleports you up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see as a Bonus Action.Closing distance, escaping a hazard, or reaching a better position.
Fire's Burn ●Adds 1d10 Fire damage when you hit a target with an attack roll and deal damage.A limited burst of extra damage on an important hit.
Frost's Chill ●Adds 1d6 Cold damage and reduces the target's Speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn.Keeping a foe near your front line or slowing a retreat.
Hill's Tumble ●Lets you give a Large or smaller target the Prone condition when you hit it with an attack roll and deal damage.Creating an opening for nearby melee allies.
Stone's Endurance ●Uses your Reaction after taking damage to reduce it by 1d12 plus your Constitution modifier.Reducing one consequential hit when your Reaction is available.
Storm's Thunder ●Uses your Reaction to deal 1d8 Thunder damage to a creature within 60 feet that damaged you.A retaliatory answer when damage reduction is less useful.

Hot Take: Stone's Endurance is easy to evaluate because it reduces a hit after you know the damage matters. It is not automatic: a Barbarian trying to pin down a fleeing enemy may get more from Frost's Chill.

Large Form ●

At character level 5, you can use a Bonus Action to become Large if there is enough space. The transformation lasts up to 10 minutes, ends early if you end it with no action, grants Advantage on Strength checks, and increases your Speed by 10 feet. Once used, it returns after a Long Rest.

Large Form does not grant extra reach, bonus damage, or an automatic grappling benefit. Its value is positional and situational: it can make a long chase, a difficult physical task, or a larger battlefield easier to cross.

Class Pairings for Goliath

Barbarian ●

Barbarian pairs well with Goliath because Rage supplies Resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage, while Giant Ancestry gives you a different choice for a key turn. Stone's Endurance can reduce a hit, Frost's Chill can make it harder for a target to leave, and Hill's Tumble can put a Large or smaller target Prone. Choose the boon for the table's actual encounters instead of stacking every defensive choice by default.

Fighter ●

Fighters can use any Giant Ancestry benefit effectively. A weapon-focused Fighter may save Fire's Burn for an important attack, while a melee controller may favor Hill's Tumble. Cloud's Jaunt is useful for a character that must cross a battlefield before the next target disappears behind allies or cover.

Paladin ●

A Paladin can use a Goliath boon to support the role the party needs in a particular round. Cloud's Jaunt can help reach an ally or hostile creature, Stone's Endurance can reduce a threatening hit, and Fire's Burn can add damage to a decisive attack. Watch your Bonus Action and Reaction economy before choosing a boon around a single ideal turn.

Background Directions

Mountain Guide ●

A mountain guide background can explain a Goliath's knowledge of travel, weather, dangerous routes, and the social rules of isolated communities. It gives the character a reason to lead an expedition without implying that every Goliath comes from the same culture.

Veteran or Guard ●

A military or civic-service background gives a martial Goliath a practical reason to work with a party. Decide who the character protected, what they learned from the job, and why that former duty no longer defines their entire life.

Laborer or Builder ●

Powerful Build can support a character whose pre-adventuring life involved hauling, construction, or rescue work. Treat it as a story connection and a way to notice physical problems in a scene, rather than a source of extra unlisted abilities.

Build Example: Frost Giant Goliath Barbarian (Levels 1-10)

Concept: A mobile frontliner who spends Frost's Chill when reducing an enemy's Speed will change the next round.

  • Level 1: Start as a Goliath Barbarian and choose Frost's Chill. Rage supplies Resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage, while Frost's Chill is a limited-use way to add Cold damage and reduce a target's Speed by 10 feet.
  • Level 2: Reckless Attack gives Advantage on Strength-based attack rolls until the start of your next turn, but attacks against you also have Advantage during that time. Use it when landing the hit matters more than avoiding the return attack.
  • Level 3: Choose a Barbarian subclass that matches the campaign. Berserker emphasizes added damage during Rage, while Wild Heart offers ritual animal magic and animal-themed Rage options.
  • Level 4: Take the Ability Score Improvement feat or another feat you qualify for. Great Weapon Master is an option for a Strength 13+ character using a Heavy weapon; it increases Strength by 1 and has benefits tied to Heavy weapons and melee critical hits or defeats.
  • Level 5: Extra Attack and Fast Movement arrive, and Large Form becomes available because your character level is 5. Use Large Form for a fight or physical task where its increased Speed and Strength-check Advantage can matter.
  • Level 7: Feral Instinct grants Advantage on Initiative rolls, while Instinctive Pounce lets you move up to half your Speed as part of the Bonus Action used to enter Rage.
  • Level 9: Brutal Strike lets a Barbarian using Reckless Attack trade Advantage on one Strength-based attack for extra damage and a selected effect if the attack hits. Hamstring Blow gives another speed-reduction option, so avoid spending Frost's Chill when one control tool already solves the problem.
  • Level 10: Your subclass grants another feature. Check the chosen subclass rather than assuming all Barbarian paths gain the same damage or movement benefit at this level.

Bottom Line

Goliath works best when Giant Ancestry is a planned tactical resource rather than an automatic damage rider. Choose a boon that gives your class a useful answer, track its Proficiency Bonus uses, and save Large Form for the moments where size, speed, and Strength checks change the scene. The species fits martial characters well, but its best choice depends on the campaign and party.
