How to Build a D&D 2024 Gnome
Gnomes bring a compact set of defensive and exploration tools to a character. Their standout trait, Gnomish Cunning, gives Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws. That does not make a Gnome immune to control effects, but it gives the character a better chance to resist many mental and personality-targeting threats without spending a resource.
Choose the lineage that creates opportunities your group will actually use. Forest Gnome offers an illusion cantrip and repeatable animal magic. Rock Gnome offers two practical cantrips plus a short-lived clockwork device with a chosen Prestidigitation effect. Neither choice changes a class's core role, so start with the class and campaign you want, then use lineage to add a useful side door into scenes.

Gnome Species Traits (2024)
Small Humanoid ●
A Gnome is a Small Humanoid, about 3 to 4 feet tall, with a Speed of 30 feet. Small size supplies a clear visual identity without changing the basic movement rate a typical adventurer relies on.
Darkvision ●
Gnomes have Darkvision out to 60 feet. It is valuable in tunnels, ruins, and night travel, but it does not replace a light source when the party needs to examine colors, writing, or fine details.
Gnomish Cunning ●
You have Advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws. The trait is not limited to spells or magical effects. Keep it visible on your sheet: it matters when a saving throw is called for, not just when a monster looks obviously arcane.
Hot Take: Gnomish Cunning matters most in campaigns that frequently call for Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma saving throws. It can prevent a failed mental save from removing a character from the scene.
Gnomish Lineage ●
Choose Forest Gnome or Rock Gnome. Each lineage adds supernatural abilities without replacing the base traits above.
Gnomish Lineages
Forest Gnome ●
Forest Gnomes know the Minor Illusion cantrip and always have Speak with Animals prepared. They can cast Speak with Animals without a spell slot a number of times equal to their Proficiency Bonus, regaining those uses after a Long Rest. If they have spell slots, they can also use those slots to cast it.
Minor Illusion rewards specific plans: obscure a small object, create a sound away from the party, or establish a false detail that buys a conversation or retreat. Speak with Animals is not a guarantee that an animal knows what the party needs, but it gives a GM a direct way to put local information, warnings, or personality into an exploration scene.
Rock Gnome ●
Rock Gnomes know Mending and Prestidigitation. They can also spend 10 minutes casting Prestidigitation to make a Tiny clockwork device with AC 5 and 1 Hit Point. Choose one Prestidigitation effect when making it; a creature can activate that effect by touching the device as a Bonus Action.
You can have up to three of these devices at once. Each falls apart after 8 hours, or you can dismantle it with a touch using the Utilize action. A deliberately chosen device can be a quiet prop for a distraction, a familiar signal for allies, or a piece of harmless field equipment. It is not a substitute for an unrestricted invention feature, so agree on the selected Prestidigitation effect before treating it as a solution.
Classes That Pair Well with Gnome
Wizard ●
Wizards value a species that adds defense without demanding a particular weapon or ability score. Either lineage works: Forest Gnome adds social and scouting magic, while Rock Gnome gives Mending and a small collection of physical tricks. Gnomish Cunning is especially welcome when a wizard is trying to stay available for the next round rather than lose control of the encounter.
Artificer ●
Rock Gnome is a good thematic fit for an Artificer from Eberron: Forge of the Artificer. At level 1, an Artificer gains Spellcasting and Tinker's Magic. At level 2, Replicate Magic Item supplies plans and created magic items. Rock Gnome's cantrips and clockwork props complement that play pattern without changing what the class features can create.
Rogue ●
Forest Gnome gives a Rogue two tools that reward careful scene reading. Minor Illusion can support a distraction or a false sound, while Speak with Animals can produce another lead when people are unwilling or unavailable. Use both as openings for a plan, not as automatic bypasses of a challenge.

Start BuildingBackground Directions
Scholar or Researcher ●
A knowledge-oriented background suits a Gnome Wizard or Artificer who is driven by a mystery, a workshop problem, or a field of magical research. Let the background explain why the character has contacts, a question to answer, or a practical reason to join an expedition.
Performer or Local Guide ●
A Forest Gnome can make Minor Illusion part of a performance, roadside trade, or local reputation. This direction works best when the character has a recognizable routine and a reason to meet strangers instead of simply using magic as flavor.
Craftsperson or Courier ●
A Rock Gnome can tie the clockwork-device feature to a useful former trade. Decide what the character built, repaired, or delivered before adventuring, then let that experience suggest allies and complications rather than granting extra mechanical benefits.
Build Example: Rock Gnome Artillerist Artificer (Levels 1-10)
Concept: A practical battlefield support character who prepares useful tools before the group needs them.
- Level 1: Start as a Rock Gnome Artificer. Tinker's Magic gives you Mending, and Rock Gnome adds Mending and Prestidigitation to your available cantrips. Choose prepared spells that solve the problems your party expects to face.
- Level 2: Replicate Magic Item grants four plans and allows the Artificer to create magic items after a Long Rest. Pick plans that fit the campaign rather than assuming every recommended item will be useful.
- Level 3: Choose Artillerist if you want a ranged battlefield specialist. The subclass grants Martial Ranged weapon proficiency, Woodcarver's Tools proficiency, and an Eldritch Cannon that lasts for 1 hour. Its always-prepared spells begin with Shield and Thunderwave.
- Level 5: The Artillerist gains Scorching Ray and Shatter as always-prepared spells. Revisit your prepared Artificer spells after each Long Rest so the list reflects the next expedition.
- Level 6: Magic Item Tinker expands what Replicate Magic Item can do, including options to recharge, drain, or transmute a created item under the feature's stated limits.
- Level 7: Flash of Genius lets you use a Reaction to add your Intelligence modifier to a creature's failed ability check or saving throw, subject to its uses and range. It gives the build a concrete way to support an ally when your own Gnomish Cunning does not apply.
- Level 9: The Artillerist's cannon becomes more destructive, including increased damage or temporary Hit Points from its listed options. This is a good point to decide whether the party needs force, area pressure, or protection most often.
- Level 10: Magic Item Adept improves the Artificer's item capacity and attunement limit. Review the plans you know and replace one when a different item would serve the party's current tier better.
Bottom Line
Gnome is a reliable choice for a player who wants a defensive saving-throw trait plus a concrete exploration tool. Forest Gnome is the pick for illusion and animal magic. Rock Gnome is the pick for cantrips and a temporary clockwork prop. Build from the class outward, then choose the lineage that gives that character one more useful way to participate in the campaign.
