What Makes the 2024 Sorcerer Different?
The Sorcerer is a prepared Charisma caster with a deliberately narrow resource engine. At level 1, Innate Sorcery lasts for 1 minute and raises the save DC of your Sorcerer spells by 1 while giving their attack rolls Advantage. You have two uses per Long Rest. That makes it a fight-defining switch, not a button to press for every minor encounter.
At level 2, Font of Magic supplies Sorcery Points and lets you exchange spell slots and points. Metamagic arrives at the same level, so the first build question is not which spell looks strongest in isolation. It is which spell will regularly reward a particular change to range, targeting, timing, or damage type.
The 2024 class prepares its level 1+ Sorcerer spells. You begin with two, prepare more as you gain levels, and can replace one whenever you gain a Sorcerer level. That flexibility makes a concise spell list more useful than a pile of situational picks you never expect to cast.

Sorcerer Class Chassis
| Trait | D&D 2024 Sorcerer |
|---|---|
| Primary ability | Charisma |
| Hit Point Die | d6 per Sorcerer level |
| Saving Throw Proficiencies | Constitution and Charisma |
| Weapon Proficiencies | Simple weapons |
| Armor Training | None |
| Skills | Choose two from Arcana, Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Persuasion, and Religion |
The d6 Hit Die and lack of armor make positioning part of the class's basic job. Constitution protects both your hit points and Concentration, while Charisma keeps your attacks, save DCs, and subclass features on track.
Preparing Your Spells
Sorcerers prepare level 1+ spells rather than maintaining a fixed list of spells known. You start with four cantrips and two level 1 Sorcerer spells, can replace one prepared spell whenever you gain a Sorcerer level, and gain additional cantrips at levels 4 and 10. Build around spells you expect to cast in ordinary encounters, then use your flexible replacement to adjust for a campaign that has changed direction. The D&D 2024 Sorcerer spell guide covers the list spell by spell.
Sorcerer Class Priorities
| Priority | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Charisma | It drives spell attacks, spell save DCs, and several subclass features. |
| Constitution | It improves durability and Concentration saves for the spells you need to keep running. |
| A clear role | Decide whether your regular turn is control, damage, party support, or a mix before selecting Metamagic. |
| Sorcery Point discipline | Points compete with each other. Preserve them for a casting change that affects the encounter. |
Sorcerer Features by Level
| Level | Feature | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Spellcasting and Innate Sorcery | Establish your regular spell plan, then save Innate Sorcery for a consequential fight. |
| 2 | Font of Magic and Metamagic | Sorcery Points can create slots or change the spell that matters now. |
| 3 | Sorcerer subclass | Your subclass adds its spell package and first distinct play-pattern feature. |
| 4, 8, 12, 16 | Ability Score Improvement or feat | Raise Charisma or take a feat that supports your actual spell plan. |
| 5 | Sorcerous Restoration | Recover a limited number of points after a Short Rest once per Long Rest. |
| 7 | Sorcery Incarnate | Spend 2 points to restart Innate Sorcery and combine two Metamagic options while it lasts. |
| 10 and 17 | More Metamagic options | Add tools once your spell list gives them a clear job. |
| 19 | Epic Boon | Pick a boon that reinforces your late-game casting role. |
| 20 | Arcane Apotheosis | Use one Metamagic option without spending points each turn while Innate Sorcery is active. |
Innate Sorcery, Font of Magic, and Metamagic
Innate Sorcery is strongest when enemies are likely to face your saving throws or when an important spell attack must land. At level 7, Sorcery Incarnate lets you activate Innate Sorcery for 2 Sorcery Points if both normal uses are spent and permits up to two Metamagic options on a spell while it is active. At level 20, Arcane Apotheosis gives one free Metamagic option each turn while Innate Sorcery is active.
Font of Magic lets you exchange spell slots and Sorcery Points, but the point pool has several competing jobs. Convert a slot only when you know which Metamagic option, emergency slot, or subclass feature needs the points. At level 2, choose two Metamagic options; you can replace one when you gain a Sorcerer level, then choose two more at levels 10 and 17. Sorcerous Restoration softens a long adventuring day without making routine point spending free.
Choosing Metamagic
| Metamagic | Cost | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Careful Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | Allies are trapped in a saving-throw area spell and need protection from its damage. |
| Distant Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | Range or a Touch spell's reach is the obstacle. |
| Empowered Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | Rerolling a disappointing damage roll will matter more than saving the point. |
| Extended Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | A long-duration spell or its Concentration needs to survive longer. |
| Heightened Spell | 2 Sorcery Points | One target's failed save would change the encounter. |
| Quickened Spell | 2 Sorcery Points | Moving an action spell to a Bonus Action creates a legal, useful turn under the same-turn casting limit. |
| Seeking Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | A missed spell attack is important enough to reroll. |
| Subtle Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | Speaking or gesturing would expose the casting, provided the spell's material component does not block the option. |
| Transmuted Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | Another listed energy type will bypass a resistance or match your subclass feature. |
| Twinned Spell | 1 Sorcery Point | An eligible spell can affect an additional creature through a higher-level slot. |

Hot Take: A Sorcerer does not need to spend points every round to feel effective. Holding them for the turn where Heightened Spell, Quickened Spell, or Innate Sorcery changes the outcome is usually better play.

Start BuildingD&D 2024 Sorcerer Subclasses
The Player's Handbook provides four subclasses. The approved setting expansions add Spellfire Sorcery from Heroes of Faerun and Shadow Sorcery from Ravenloft: The Horror Within. Ask the DM before choosing an expansion subclass, especially when its setting assumptions matter to the campaign.
| Subclass | First level 3 decision | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Aberrant Sorcery | Psionic Spells and Telepathic Speech | Psychic utility, covert casting, and unusual control tools |
| Clockwork Sorcery | Clockwork Spells and Restore Balance | Defensive support and cancelling Advantage or Disadvantage |
| Draconic Sorcery | Draconic Resilience and damage affinity later | A durable elemental blaster |
| Wild Magic Sorcery | Wild Magic Surge and Tides of Chaos | Players who want the surge procedure at the table |
| Shadow Sorcery | Shadow Spells and Power of Shadow | Darkness, survival, and shadow movement |
| Spellfire Sorcery | Spellfire Burst and Spellfire Spells | Fire or Radiant pressure with emergency support |
Aberrant Sorcery
Aberrant Sorcery brings a psionic spell package and Telepathic Speech at level 3. The prepared spells add mind-focused control and information tools, while the telepathic connection gives the party a way to coordinate without speaking across a room.
Its first practical choice is how often the campaign gives you a reason to use subtle communication or the subclass spell list. At level 6, Psionic Sorcery can cast a spell from that list with Sorcery Points and strips most components; Psychic Defenses adds Psychic resistance and defensive saving throw help. The tradeoff is that the subclass is at its best when the adventure rewards its strange utility, not when every problem is simply a damage race.
Clockwork Sorcery
Clockwork Sorcery starts with an always-prepared utility and protection spell package plus Restore Balance. That Reaction removes Advantage or Disadvantage from a d20 roll a creature you can see is about to make, a reliable intervention when the party can identify an important roll.
At level 6, Bastion of Law turns Sorcery Points into a damage-reduction ward. This is the right path for a player who wants to protect allies while retaining full Sorcerer casting. Its tradeoff is timing: Restore Balance has limited uses, and a ward uses the same point pool that fuels Metamagic.
Draconic Sorcery
Draconic Sorcery has the cleanest defensive opening. Draconic Resilience raises your hit point maximum and gives an unarmored AC based on Dexterity and Charisma. Its prepared spells include familiar draconic magic such as Chromatic Orb and Dragon's Breath.
At level 6, Elemental Affinity asks you to choose Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Poison. It grants resistance to that type and adds Charisma to one damage roll of a spell that deals it. Pick a type that matches spells you will actually prepare; choosing a type for flavor alone can leave a major feature idle. The later wings and dragon companion make the subclass a natural fit for a mobile blaster.
Wild Magic Sorcery
Wild Magic Sorcery makes the surge procedure an active part of play. Once per turn after casting a Sorcerer spell with a spell slot, you can roll a d20; on a 20, you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table. Tides of Chaos gives yourself Advantage on one d20 Test, then requires either a spell-slot casting or a Long Rest before you use it again. Casting that spell before the rest automatically triggers a surge roll.
The first decision is social rather than mathematical: confirm that the whole table wants unpredictable surge results to be part of combat. Bend Luck later lets you alter another creature's roll, but it also costs Sorcery Points. This path is not a generic damage upgrade; it is for players who will enjoy managing volatility.
Shadow Sorcery
Shadow Sorcery from Ravenloft: The Horror Within adds a spell package built around darkness, fear, and difficult movement. At level 3, Power of Shadow grants long-range Darkvision, short-range Blindsight, the ability to see through darkness created by your spells, and Strength of the Grave as a chance to remain standing when you would drop to 0 Hit Points.
At level 6, Beasts of Ill Omen spends Sorcery Points to call a shadowy Summon Beast that can make nearby enemies worse at saving against your spells. Its practical tradeoff is campaign tone and terrain: it shines in dark, constrained adventures but should be cleared with the DM if Ravenloft material is not part of the campaign's premise.
Spellfire Sorcery
Spellfire Sorcery from Heroes of Faerun combines offense with a small support valve. Whenever you spend at least 1 Sorcery Point as part of a Magic action or Bonus Action, Spellfire Burst can once per turn grant temporary hit points to a nearby creature or deal Fire or Radiant damage to one.
Its level 3 prepared spells include Cure Wounds, Guiding Bolt, and Scorching Ray. At level 6, Absorb Spells always prepares Counterspell and returns 1d4 Sorcery Points when a target fails the saving throw against your Counterspell. The tradeoff is that its point recovery depends on a specific trigger, so do not treat it as a guaranteed source of points. This is expansion material and needs DM approval where Forgotten Realms options are not automatically available.
Building a Reliable Sorcerer
Start with Charisma, then protect Concentration with Constitution and sensible positioning. Your first Metamagic options should reflect spells you expect to prepare rather than a theoretical perfect combo. A control-focused Sorcerer may value Heightened Spell more than a blaster does; a party that often shares areas with enemies may value Careful Spell.
Do not convert spell slots to points without a target use in mind. The class already gets Sorcerous Restoration at level 5, which can recover a limited number of points after a Short Rest once per Long Rest. That feature helps a demanding adventuring day, but it does not make the resource pool unlimited.
Pick a Direction Before Picking a Combo
| Direction | Class and Metamagic focus | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Controller | Aberrant Sorcery or Shadow Sorcery with Heightened, Careful, or Subtle Spell | Save the points for the spell that removes an enemy's useful turn. |
| Durable elemental caster | Draconic Sorcery with a damage type you will repeatedly prepare | Elemental Affinity only helps when your spells use the chosen damage type. |
| Protective support caster | Clockwork Sorcery or Spellfire Sorcery with Distant or Careful Spell | Your Reaction and Sorcery Points are limited, so decide which ally or roll needs them most. |
| Volatile table wildcard | Wild Magic Sorcery with a clear surge procedure agreed with the group | The subclass asks the table to make unpredictability part of play. |
Multiclassing can add a different spell or weapon package, but it delays Sorcerer spells, subclass features, and class milestones. Start from a single-class plan and add another class only when the campaign role you gain is more valuable than those delays.
