The Warlock trades a deep spell-slot pool for powerful slots that return on a Short or Long Rest. That rhythm rewards a player who can decide when a spell changes the scene, then lets Eldritch Invocations carry the character through the rest of the adventuring day.

Warlock at a glance
- Primary ability: Charisma
- Hit Point Die: d8 per Warlock level
- Saving throws: Wisdom and Charisma
- Armor and weapons: Light armor and Simple weapons
- Skills: Choose two from Arcana, Deception, History, Intimidation, Investigation, Nature, and Religion
- Core choices: prepared spells, Eldritch Invocations, and a level-3 patron
Charisma drives Warlock spell attacks and saving throw DCs, so it is the class's first ability-score priority. Constitution helps a character maintain Concentration and stay standing. Dexterity is useful for initiative and Light armor, but the right score spread depends on whether the build expects to fight with a pact weapon or stay behind the front line.
Set ability scores for the job you intend to do
| Ability | What it supports | Build implication |
|---|---|---|
| Charisma | Warlock spell attacks, saving throw DCs, and several patron features | Improve it first. It supports the class whether you use a cantrip, a Pact Magic spell, or Pact of the Blade. |
| Constitution | Hit Points and Concentration saving throws | Prioritize it after Charisma when the character expects to maintain an important spell or fight near enemies. |
| Dexterity | Light armor, initiative, and Finesse or ranged weapon attacks | It matters more for an unarmored-looking or weapon-forward Warlock, but it does not replace Charisma as the class's core score. |
| Other abilities | Character skills, knowledge checks, and multiclass prerequisites | Let the campaign and character concept decide them. Do not add a secondary score unless a named feature actually needs it. |
Hot take: The most useful Warlock decision is not a damage ranking. It is deciding what the party needs you to do when you have no Pact Magic slots left.
Pact Magic and spell preparation
At level 1, a Warlock knows two Warlock cantrips and prepares two level-1 Warlock spells. The class table increases both as the character advances, and a Warlock can replace a cantrip, prepared spell, or Invocation when gaining a Warlock level as the relevant feature allows.
Pact Magic uses a small number of slots for Warlock spells of levels 1 through 5. Every Pact Magic slot has the same level, and all expended Pact Magic slots return after a Short or Long Rest. This is why an inexpensive utility spell and a high-impact encounter spell compete for the same resource: the right choice depends on how much adventuring remains before the next rest.
Magical Cunning and later milestones
At level 2, Magical Cunning lets the Warlock perform a one-minute rite to regain expended Pact Magic slots equal to up to half the character's maximum, rounded up. It returns after a Long Rest. Treat it as a recovery tool, not a reason to assume every encounter begins at full capacity.
The other milestones worth planning around are:
| Warlock level | Feature | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Warlock Subclass | Adds the patron's spell package and first defining feature. |
| 4, 8, 12, 16 | Ability Score Improvement | Provides an Ability Score Improvement feat or another feat for which you qualify. |
| 9 | Contact Patron | Lets you contact your patron with Contact Other Plane without a spell slot and automatically succeed on that spell's saving throw. |
| 11, 13, 15, 17 | Mystic Arcanum | Adds one level 6, 7, 8, and 9 Warlock spell respectively that can be cast once per Long Rest without a spell slot. |
| 19 | Epic Boon | Provides an Epic Boon feat or another qualifying feat. |
| 20 | Eldritch Master | Improves Magical Cunning so it restores all expended Pact Magic slots. |
Mystic Arcanum is not an extra flexible spell slot. Each Arcanum is one selected spell of the specified level. You can cast that spell once without expending a spell slot, regain its use on a Long Rest, and can replace it with a spell of the same level when you gain a Warlock level. Pick spells you would be happy to reserve for one decisive use each day.
Eldritch Invocations
Eldritch Invocations are the Warlock's modular class feature. You gain one at level 1 and more at the levels shown on the class table. Some have a Warlock-level or other prerequisite, and an Invocation cannot normally be chosen twice unless its text says it can.
Three early choices establish very different characters:
- Pact of the Blade creates or bonds a magical melee weapon. It can use Charisma for attack and damage rolls, and later Blade-only Invocations build on it. Choose it when the character wants to occupy melee spaces, not merely because it sounds martial.
- Pact of the Chain improves Find Familiar with special familiar forms and a combat command option. It is most valuable in a game where scouting, delivery, and positioning matter. See the D&D 2024 Familiars Guide for the base spell and familiar rules.
- Pact of the Tome grants cantrips from other class lists and level-1 ritual spells. It gives a spell-focused Warlock more answers outside combat without requiring every answer to consume a Pact Magic slot.
Other Invocations should solve a concrete job. Agonizing Blast improves a damaging Warlock cantrip with Charisma; Repelling Blast can reposition a target hit by an attack-roll cantrip; and Thirsting Blade gives a qualifying pact-weapon user an additional attack. Check prerequisites before reserving an Invocation slot for a later option.
Choose Invocations as a package, not a tier list
| First job | Foundation | Useful follow-through | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee pressure | Pact of the Blade | Thirsting Blade and other Blade-only choices as you qualify | You need a reason to occupy melee spaces and a plan for the damage that follows. |
| Familiar scouting and delivery | Pact of the Chain | Invocations that improve the familiar or support its positioning | The familiar's useful commands compete for your Bonus Action. |
| Rituals and broad utility | Pact of the Tome | Borrowed cantrips and ritual choices that solve actual party gaps | Do not prepare redundant utility just because you can add it. |
| Ranged cantrip pressure | A damaging cantrip plus Agonizing Blast | Repelling Blast when movement changes the encounter | Forced movement is valuable when there is terrain, an ally, or a positioning problem to exploit. |
An Invocation can be replaced when the relevant class feature permits it. Revisit the package when the campaign changes or when a later prerequisite becomes available; do not treat a level-1 choice as a permanent ranking contest.

Start BuildingWarlock patrons
The four patrons in the 2024 Player's Handbook are core options. Vestige Patron appears in Arcana Unleashed, and Undead Patron appears in Ravenloft: The Horror Within. Ask the GM before bringing an expansion patron into a campaign that is using only the core book.
Archfey Patron
An Archfey Warlock is a mobile controller and social-magic specialist. At level 3, Steps of the Fey lets you cast Misty Step without a spell slot a number of times based on Charisma, with an added effect chosen when you teleport. The patron's value depends on positioning, charm, illusion, and encounters where teleporting or changing a creature's state matters; it does not supply a companion or a direct healing pool. Source: 2024 Player's Handbook.
At later levels, the patron reacts to danger with Misty Escape, protects against charm effects, and can add a teleport to a qualifying enchantment or illusion spell. It suits a player who wants their movement and spell choice to create openings for the party.
Celestial Patron
A Celestial Warlock is a support caster with radiant and fire follow-through. Level-3 Healing Light creates a d6 healing pool that can be spent as a Bonus Action on a creature within 60 feet. It helps a party recover without turning the Warlock into a replacement for every dedicated healer, and the pool is finite. Source: 2024 Player's Handbook.
Later features improve radiant or fire magic, create temporary hit points when the Warlock regains resources, and provide a powerful response when an ally is making death saves. Pick Celestial when quick, targeted support matters as much as the class's normal control and damage.
Fiend Patron
A Fiend Warlock is a durable aggressor who benefits when enemies fall. At level 3, Dark One's Blessing grants temporary hit points when you reduce an enemy to 0 hit points, or when another creature reduces an enemy within 10 feet of you to 0 hit points. Its durability is strongest in fights with several enemies and less reliable against a solitary adversary. Source: 2024 Player's Handbook.
The later package adds a d10 to an ability check or saving throw, a selectable damage resistance, and Hurl Through Hell for a hard-hitting attack. It is a good fit for a Warlock who expects to stay close enough to contested space to benefit from defeated enemies.
Great Old One Patron
A Great Old One Warlock applies psychic control and information pressure. At level 3, Awakened Mind opens a telepathic link, while the patron's spell package adds psychic-themed options. Its benefits ask the player to set up and exploit a particular target rather than simply adding a broad defensive resource. Source: 2024 Player's Handbook.
At level 6, Clairvoyant Combatant extends the tactical value of the telepathic connection. The level-10 features add protection from psychic harm and a hex-based debuff, while Create Thrall expands the patron's high-level aberrant control. It rewards a table that uses communication, investigation, and carefully chosen targets.
Vestige Patron
A Vestige Warlock manages a companion alongside a selected Cleric-domain spell package. At level 3, Vestige Companion manifests a Celestial, Fiend, or Undead companion that acts on your turn and generally needs a Bonus Action command for its useful actions. The companion consumes attention and often the Bonus Action, so it conflicts with a build that already spends that action every round. Source: Arcana Unleashed.
The same level lets you choose Life, Light, Trickery, or War domain spells as always-prepared Warlock spells at the stated character levels. Later features refresh the companion's power, share its resistance while nearby, save it from dropping to 0 hit points, and let it assume a stronger form for a limited time. Choose this patron for an active second body on the field, not for a passive bonus.
Undead Patron
An Undead Warlock is a resilient battlefield controller with shadow mobility. At level 3, Form of Dread grants temporary hit points, immunity to being Frightened, and a once-per-turn chance to Frighten a creature hit by an attack roll. The form has limited uses and asks the player to make attack rolls and operate close enough for fear effects to matter. Source: Ravenloft: The Horror Within.
The patron also provides exceptional darkvision, blindsight, and sight through its own Darkness spells. Grave Touched improves movement and necrotic magic, while the high-level package adds unusual endurance and a way to return from 0 hit points at a cost. Select it when horror themes and staying in the fight are part of the campaign, and confirm that the campaign includes the expansion.
Class Feats
The Warlock features table provides Ability Score Improvement feat choices at levels 4, 8, 12, and 16, plus an Epic Boon choice at level 19. Use the Best Feats for Warlock guide to weigh those decisions against your patron, Invocations, and usual role.
Class Spells
Use the Warlock spell guide when you are choosing prepared spells around Pact Magic's small slot count and shared slot level.
Build the role, then choose the details
Start with a party job. A Blade Warlock needs a reason to be in melee and a plan for the risks there. A Chain or Tome Warlock should identify what the familiar, rituals, or borrowed cantrips let the group do that it otherwise could not. Then choose a patron that reinforces that job rather than competing with it for actions and spell preparation. Return to the D&D 2024 class guide hub when you want to compare party roles without treating any class as a default winner.
